Hi Gang - I'm new to the group. So nice to find you here! Swam today for the first time in a while - a bit of a fair weather swimmer and a little slow, but I love it! Haven't competed before, but I'm planning to do a couple open-water miles this summer. :)

I swim in a "resistance" type of pool at our local hosptial aquatic center so I am not sure what distance I am swimming. Good luck to everyone is achieving their goals this week.

am still stuck with only getting to the pool twice a week instead of my goal of 3 times. So much going on and too many nights of short sleep keeping me from my projected 3 times. But at least that is 2 times and not nothing. Doing one mile plus one/33 of a mile each time.

Cheryl & All
Hope you are back to the pool more than 1x or 2x a week now, but it's still the beginning of Dec.

I was inspired by LBANI54 to swim a mile, so that's what I've been doing 2x a week in addition to the water aerobics. I am in the pool 5x a week for water aerobics (at least for now) but with classes ending next week I don't know where I will swim. I really really hate the indoor 20 yd pool at 24 Fitness. I may be stuck there if I don't figure something else. Sharon

ok, been back into the pool now for 4 weeks, still not been able to work back up to my normal distance and time, but that is coming. I have only been able to get to the pool once or twice a week so far, but that is definitely better than none like the past summer while my pool was shut down. I am hoping that middle of Dec. I will be able to up my pool days to 3 and then I really hope to start seeing my weight come down slowly. I am not sure how or where to log my swims so that teams will get credit for what I am doing, so if someone can enlighten me, I would really appreciate it. Hugs to you all, Cheryl

Since I started with a personal trainer I am trying for more vigorous cardio. I've moved back to swimming laps which of course hurts my shoulder, BUT I have changed my stroke (for the better) and voilà less pain!

I would really like to swim for the master's team at the college I attend so I began swimming 3-5 days a week at the beginning of October. Due to finals, I missed 9 days straight, but I am back in the water and averaging 4000 yards a workout. I am mostly going for the endurance right now, but have seen a 7 minute decrease in my mile since I began one month ago. I began at a 42 minute mile and am down to a 35 minute mile. I have a long way to go to get back into race shape, but this first month has been very rewarding!

45 minutes of mixed free/back/breast. I don't count distance-- I'm jamming out to my music.

Anyone have any suggestions on good, sealing waterproof headphones? I have a waterproof housing for my old ipod nano but the headphones that came with it don't fit well, allowing water to enter my ears. I tend to get swimmers ear from this and the drying ear drops hurt and don't really help.

YEAH!! Today was the first day back in the pool after it shut down for the past 3 1/2 months. I really took it easy for the first time back, doing only about 2/3 of what was my normal routine swim. I know that I will pay for the lack of exercise later today and tomorrow, but it still felt sooo good. Will slowly work back up to what I used to be doing. Yipee!!! I'm back in the water!!!! emoticon

after being out of commission for the past 3 1/2 months while my pool was shut down for cleaning, repairs and upgrades, I am looking forward to being about get get back to my lap swims. During the shut-down, I tried using my recumbent bike but just couldn't keep it up. Other than walking during our weekly grocery shopping, I haven't been able to get any real exercise. My pool opens back up this coming Monday and I plan to get back into my routine, showly at first of course, but definitely plan to get it back into my routine. I have barely maintained during this shut-down and look forward to losing weight again and getting back into shape.

Just wondering, Do you find swimming work-outs a way to lose weight? I'm not so sure.

Well I teach/coach a group 2x a week. One set of folks do 900, another 1500, and the more advanced 2000+yards or meters, depending on how the pool is when we arrive! (I dislike the surprise!)

Monday we alternate thru Back, Breast, Fly. Wed we do mostly free, with some strokes, but mostly free. Let me know what sounds good for you!

Welcome back!
I'm looking for some variety. Arms only, kickboard, different intervals.
I've run into a plateau in my weight loss, it seems to be moving again, but I think keeping my body guessing even in the pool will help that.
I've just been out of the swimming for competition or fitness for so long, I've forgotten what to do! I found that set on an Army training website!

Hiya! I'm new to this team and this seemed to be the most active thread, so I thought I'd start with a daily check-in!

I was a competitive swimmer growing up through high school, but just recently started swimming again. Looking for some better interval workouts. 2-3x/week been doing about 1400-1600 meters, 400 warm-up, 4x 50 with 20 sec rest, 4x100 with 40 sec rest, with a cool down 400-600.

I'd love some ideas and support!

In a few minutes I'll be swimming laps, YAY!
The time for sunscreen is now. I do hate how people stand on the edge of the deck slathering sunscreen on and then they jump in just a min or two later. For most sunscreens the directions are to put in on 15-20 min BEFORE getting in the water.

Last week with temps in the 100's, I put sunscreen on my forehead. BIG mistake. When I was teaching my class, with the sweat pouring down my face, I thot my eyes were going to be chemically burned. So I will just have to wear my hat (which I do anyway) and no sunscreen on the forehead.

I normally use Solbar, recommended by my Kaiser dermatologist. Anyone have other sunscreens they recommend?

I'll be taking a water aerobics class in a few minutes and then teaching one this evening (16 students signed up already). Love the "double" workouts, except for the fact it isn't laps.

I'm thinking of switching to laps at lunch on M-W (instead of T-Th) since I'll now have a water aerobics class in the evening.

This week I swam 2,000 yards on my Tue & Thu lap swim days. Including a broken 200 fly, Woot! I think in July I try & add a third day of laps and only do 2 days of Aqua Aerobics... On my way to joining a Master's team again.
Since I am swimming at noon, I got a different water shirt to try out to avoid sunburn. Today was the first day, and it worked.

Got more than two miles in, for the two days I swam laps. Today was 1800 yards and it felt good (at least once I took off the water shirt). Shirt works for water aerobics but not swimming laps.

We were without the pool the entire first week of classes.

It seems the cheap plastic vents (like those found in a jacuzzi, not for a swimming pool) stuck out so far we would have sliced our feet open. Plus I have no idea how they determined where to put the vents. We have bright blue tiled (I call them crosses) at the end of each lane, that's normal. Some of the vents are in the tiled crosses, some vents are to the right and others to the left. Each lane they are in a different spot.

And to top off my disappointment with the "fix", there is still rusty re-bar showing on the deck.

So far I am back up at one mile and then joining the water aerobics class for the other half hour. I want to be back at two miles within my one hour of water time. I am SOOO happy to be back in the water!

I did get to swim laps on Saturday evening, but got out when the fourth man got in my lane. 2-3 ok, but 4 (in a 20 meter lane?). It didn't look like others had been online lately either. I really missed my internet access while in the States.

Hi-sorry awol for so long. I was in the States for 2 months most of which without internet access. I am back in Japan. I gained 6 lbs. while at my sister's in June, lost 2 of it while at my 98 year old aunt's in July, and the other 4 while at my daughter's in August. Upon returning to Japan, I have lost another 11. I have only made it to the pool once since I got back since my car that I loaned to a co-worker while I was gone, died. I bought another car today, but will not get it till Wednesday. Hope you all have a great Labor Day.

I hope to join a Masters team again. Don't know how to carve out the time.

Boy playing with kids was tiring, more so than I expected. But it was all the prep time I think, cuz the play time was short, prep time tookhours.

If life doesn't interfere, I'll be swimming laps all this week since I'm on vaca while playing with the kids at VBC. It should be loads of fun.

I haven't joined the team, my shoulder all of a sudden got much worse. I am unable to lift my arm to turn on the light, let alone swim (especially backstroke). Pain pain and more pain. It's past time to return to the Dr. I just hate taking the time out of my day to sit there and wait and wait, etc. plus pay minimum $20 bucks to do so! argh.

Well, good news here. I joined my district's Master's swimming group, paid the fees and got the card. Now I have to get off my tushie and join a club.

I will be joining the Master's division of my club that I was a member of from 1966-1977. Yes, they've made some changes, including changing the name of the pool to my coach from back then. Woo Hoo! George Haines. For any oldtimers who swam in AAU swimming before it became USS or is it USA swim?

I'm on my way!

Such a sad day yesterday. My DH's first and oldest friend (he doesn't remember not being his friend) died this weekend and we were at his funeral. We drove down Tuesday after work sliding into my DH's sisters just before 10:00PM. Up at the funeral home at 8:30AM, then all the activites and got back to his sisters around 2:30PM. Her DH took a half day so we visited, when to dinner and then drove back home getting in just before midnight. I got up at 5:00am anyway and swam today to work out the sitting in the car too long kinks...(it worked-I feel sooooo much better after swimming) My son was coaching this am and said that I looked tired this morning when I got there. duh...... Have a great day. CMY (Carol)

Hey, all levels of swimmers are welcome here! When I joined, it was just for competitive swimmers, but I thought that was too restricting. Keep up the good work and you'll be swimming like a fish before you know it!

Today as soon as I am done working, we are driving to New Jersey for a funeral tomorrow of my DH life-long friend. So sad and I'll miss a workout tonight--probably for the best since I am tired from the competition this weekend.

Take care and log those minutes and miles! CMY (Carol)

Not sure if I'm on the right swim site - I don't do laps or anything like that, in fact I'm not a very good swimmer, but I try to get to swim exercise class at least four times a week. I go an hour early and do bicycling in the water, kicking, etc; then spend the next hour in swim exercise class so I get a good 120 minutes usually of exercise in. Haven't really found a place to put down these minutes except under Other so that is what I do. emoticon

But I do get that recorded and I'm hoping to get comfortable enough to start swimming again, kind of float like a rock right now. emoticon

This past week has been a real bummer for me, lots of emotional eating, lots of extreme worry, just read my blog and you will know why. But I will try to get my minutes down every day that I go swimming - emoticon

emoticon Have a great week everyone-

Tuesday's swim was the most boring hour I ever did, but I lasted the hour which is great. The pool the hotel sent me to was teeny-tiny and meant as a therapy pool so the water was warm too. I did a lot of kicking drills and other drills. Yesterday I went on line to the USMS website and looked for places to swim and found a Masters Swim Team in Lakewood. I went this morning and swam in their 50 meter facility. They have a policy of the first week free, so I didn't even have to pay for my pleasure. Tomorrow am I will swim with them again at a 25 meter facility which should be easier for me to do. The elevation is playing a factor too that I hadn't considered. I feel good, though. Carol (CMY)

Leaving for the Denver area tomorrow at 6AM for work. I'm dreading this final visit to our headquarters. The early morning flight--3.5 days of grilling by co-workers--SaturdayAM flight home--uncertainty about swimming facilities. I'm feeling really good in the water now and looking forward to my competitions and don't want to lose that good feeling. I am assured the hotel has an agreement with a swimming facility, but I don't know what kind of pool and what size. My coach had me packing paddles in case it is a short pool so I can maximize the swim part of the experience. I am not packing any of my other toys because of space--I can't check a bag. Ugh! I'll be on-line while I am there, but don't know if it will be early AM or late PM. Have a good week! Carol (CMY)

Snowing here in Massachusetts--at least northeastern Mass. Cleaning up all the dirty snow and coming down quite fast. I swam a total of 5200yd yesterday between the two workouts. I felt good in the night swim--not totally exhausted--for the first time since I've been doing double workouts. Maybe this is going to work.

Hope you are all doing well and enjoying life!

I'm back in the water after vacation and being sick.it always feels so good to get back to work. I seem to sabotage myself with vacations and illness. How can I ever get to consistency if I continue this behavior. I have to travel to Colorado next week for work (last trip in last month of working). I have scoped out that the hotel has a pool I can use at a different location. I don't know the size, but I'll find a way to get some work in. Can't take any equipment other than suit, cap, and goggles, but I'll cope. I'll be missing 4 hrs and 20 minutes of workout during that time, so we'll see what I can come up with.

Glad to see Denmama1 on the board.
