It's been a long time since I first heard of Zulu, a lab that saved his owner's life on a hike then ran away when rescuers tried to find him. I saw an article in this morning's paper about him. He is still missing, but a group in El Paso, where the hiker lives, organized a banquet to recognize this brave dog's acts. The owner was an older man who went hiking in sourthern NM near where I live on a day when weather was good but he got lost, weather turned bad, and he got caught in a blizzard. He just had a windbreaker for a jacket. He was missing for close to a week when he was found unconscious and seriously ill. Zulu was seen on his back, trying to keep him warm. The hiker was in intensive care for a while, then in rehab. He says he still has frostbitten toes and has struggled from pneumonia since this happened in mid-December. He is still missing his family member very much and there is still a $4000 reward for him. He was lost in the wilderness of the Gila National Forest. I don't know if he has survived all this time. There is also the hope that someone found him that hadn't read the papers and heard about him. Some people don't read the news. Maybe they have him, not realizing he's been searched for so hard. They even had a professional dog rescuer come in and try to help. The banquet was to honor Zulu and the countless other pets who do heroic things for their owners every day without recognition. I thought that was really nice. I'm so sorry for the family though that misses Zulu so much. I had a lot of response for a while, and just wanted to update anyone on what I saw today.

I did a search online this morning and there is nothing new so I'm assuming he hasn't been found yet. The last articles were from a couple of weeks ago. I usually put "Zulu Black Lab" in the search engine and it pulls up articles. If I just put Zulu I get a lot of other stuff!
If I hear anything new I'll let you guys know. I feel so sorry for the poor dog and also for his family that are missing him so much.

This is the first time I have heard this story about Zulu. I hope this dog is found soon!! Has it been about a month now?? I hope he or she is safe and has found someplace warm. It would be very traumatic for the dog. Please post any updates,as I know you will, makes me very sad.

I have been gone out of state for the past week. I did a search today to find out if there is anything new on Zulu. Apparently there is still hope, although he hasn't yet been found. A property owner that has a camera installed on his property he uses for hunting has captured images not too long ago of Zulu passing through the area. They still haven't been able to find him but still have experts in animal recovery working on trying to find him. The big problem they are having is that unauthorized persons are trespassing on private property to look for him (probably because of a reward) and are cutting gate locks and breaking into hunting cabins and not respecting the land owners in their search. The land owners have apparently been very cooperative with the professionals that are looking and have granted access but others they say will be arrested for trespassing if caught. Why can't people be respectful of others property? My personal feeling is that those who are being disrespectful are not doing it out of love for animals but because there is something like a $3500 reward that was set up at the very beginning of this search. I could be wrong but I just think people who are being sincere would go through proper channels to offer their help.
Will let everyone know if something new develops.

No new word on Zulu. I'm afraid that he's not going to be found but never know. The family has a blog page I found out on the web that I've been checking but there is nothing new since Dec 14th. He still hadn't been found then. The owner was leaving the hospital and going to a rehab and was recovering pretty well.
I'll be gone on next week to see my son and may not get to an internet connection.

I checked the internet resources again this morning. There was an update that said Zulu's owner has now come out a coma but has a trach in so still can't talk. He's slowly recovering. They still haven't found Zulu yet but are still looking and hopeful. Vets say that because he is a healthy 3 year old lab he stands a good chance of withstanding cold and predators. The trained animal rescue people are still working at trying to locate him. It is a wilderness area though so it is hard. Will let you know when I find anymore. Thanks for everyone thoughts and prayers. This story just really touched my heart because of all the hiking I do with my yellow lab Abigail. And I guess also just because I'm an animal lover.

I searched a couple of news websites from our area that have been carrying news of Zulu and there is no new information today. They say they've had inquiries from all over the US. When I find something new I will post it.

Thank you.

I'm so worried about the black lab named Zulu. I checked the elpasotimes.com website which has been following the story but the most recent post was still yesterday's story. The man is still in a coma but in stable condition. It's not known exactly how he got so lost. There was a heavy snowstorm during the 7 days he was lost. Apparently he left on a day that was nice and was wearing just a jeans and t-shirt and windbreaker. The stories I read also said that Zulu was not normally an outdoor dog, and preferred to stay indoors when the door to the house was opened. The Animal Rescue group is doing the search now, and using tapes of the man's wife's voice, live traps with cooked chicken in it, and a blanket that has his mother's scent on it, which the family also owns. They are really hoping these efforts will draw him out. I looked at my yellow lab Abigail sleeping with me on my bed and was so grateful she is safe and warm and worried about him out in the freezing cold. But I believe God has a soft spot for animals and hopefully will watch over him. I hike a lot with my lab, and so this story really hits home for me because any hiker never knows when a situation like that will happen, no matter how experienced. This gentleman was apparently very experienced and had hiked this particular area numerous times. Just keep Zulu and his family in your thoughts and prayers. If you want to read the whole series of stories, go to elpasotimes.com and there is a search bar at the top of the page. Just type in Zulu and hit search. There is an option for "this site" or the web and the default is "this site". Just leave it there. I think it turned up 12 results following the search for the missing hiker and then after his rescue for the dog.
I don't know any of these people but the story just touched my heart so deeply as an animal and lab lover.

I live in southern New Mexico. Recently a hiker from El Paso TX, which is about 3 hours from where I live, was hiking in the mountains near my home and got lost. He was lost for 7 days. He had a black lab named Zulu with him that is 3 years old. The news said it's only the second time he had taken Zulu hiking with him. The hiker is 67 years old. He was finally found after 7 days. Zulu apparently was lying across him and Zulu's heat kept him from freezing to death. The hiker is in a coma in the hospital but in stable condition. But Zulu got scared when the rescue workers showed off and Zulu took off. They are now trying to find him. He is truly a hero. There is a reward that is up to about $3500 and some people have tried to claim it with dogs that weren't Zulu. But please pray that Zulu is found safe and returned to his family that always loved him but in light of his heroic actions he is even more special to them.
