Well teammates - I am on the road again. emoticon

I'm headed to Oklahoma over Labor Day weekend - leaving Saturday morning.

I'm headed to see family. That means double danger - healthy eating on the road, and then visiting family who LOVES to eat, especially the good hearty meals.

Well... I knew the food would be a huge obstacle for me. I love German food and with the places I visited the opportunity was there to have the real thing (or pretty close to it) every day I was there.

I did splurge and probably by all standards did overdo. However, I wound up also doing a LOT of walking to see the sites as well. I think that is what kept things in check so well and allowed for the additional weight loss.

I am finding it a bit more challenging getting back into the routine at home now - even splurged last night for a cup of Baskin Robbins ice cream. All proceeds went to the Relay for Life efforts which made it easy for me to justify.

However, I seem to still be paying for it today. I'm type 2 diabetic and things are running a bit high today and I'm awfully tired & a bit sluggish.

So... it's definitely my cue that I'm off track and need to get back to the routine.

My next challenge will be in about 2 weeks when I go visit family over Labor Day weekend. I come from a long line of family who LOVES to eat and eat heartily they do!

I just read through everything in this thread and all I can say is wow! That's really inspiring that you could go on a trip and lose 3 pounds! I'm going to have to remember that this next month. I've got a trip every weekend until the 2nd week of October. Thankfully, they're not too far, so I won't spend a ton of time in the car, but the food is going to be amazingly hard to resist.

well.... I'm hoping I don't get lax in the efforts and indulge more than I should. I've been known to do that before after making great strides. So... my pitfall to watch out for.

It must be nice to "have the pie and eat it too!

emoticon Actually,I think it's FANTASTIC! It gives you self-confidence for now and the future. So you don't have to be paranoid that every time you indulge, that you won't have to pay penance. I hope NOT! I honestly think there will be tirimisu sp? in heaven, and you won't even gain an ounce from it!

Yes, I was surprised to learn that this latest reading is what someone without diabetes should have. Admittedly, I would be tempted to believe this means I no longer have diabetes except that I splurged a bit on vacation and as a result seen my levels running a bit high when I would test. So... think I'll contine to keep after things.

Hope your hair appt went well. I've had the same stylist for several years myself, so know the hesitancy in trying someone new. Sometimes it's a good thing and sometimes not.

That A1c is like you don't even have diabetes at all!
My 2nd A1c was exactly the same as yours.Surprisinly, mine have all been 7 or below.

I have a hair appointment with a new stylist this afternoon at 1:00. I'm REALLY nervous.I've been going to the same cosmetologist for over 20 yr! I have high maintainence hair-it's thin and fine, and I have 3 "cowlicks?" right in the front,so I can't wear bangs of any kind.And...to make matters worse,my thyroid is completly off kilter,so my hair is like straw. Not a pretty picture, huh? I'll let you know how it turns out.I was just thinking it couldn't be any worse...but actually I guess it could!!! Oh well...it's only hair, and it'll grow,LOL!

So I'll talk to you when I get home!

Hi Sandy -

I'm having a difficult time getting my energy level back. I'm pretty tired. Guess that's good - indicates I had a really good time. LOL.

The trip was great will share about it all once I get myself rested and up to snuff again. I go back to work Thursday - ugh! Hopefully will have that energy level back y then.

I received some great news yesterday. My Dr's office called to give me the results of my a1c that was done before I left for vacation. It came in at 5.7. This is down from 8.1 in April when I found out I was type2 diabetic.

Yay emoticon

I'll be on later this afternoon or evening. Will catch you up on the trip then. emoticon

HI!
Glad you're back. Not much action around here while you were gone...just not the same :~( I've been peddling away on my bike. After I get off of it, I've noticed that I'm relaxed,so it must be helping my tensed muscles!

I want to hear ALL about your trip...that vicarious thing, you know. I haven't been doing well food-wise. I need FOOD,but my list is long and I know it would wear me and my back out.Even if I had them do my shopping I'd still have to pick it up,take it home, and put it away.

Talk to you more tomorrow. It's in the mood to storm here, too.

Blessings,Sandy

Hello all -

I am back from the road trip. I have not weighed in yet. However, using the clothing test, if I gained anything I don't think it was much. I did real well except for when I allowed myself a brat at Pella and then I had two hearty German meals at the colonies.

But... they sure were good! emoticon

An unexpected joy along the way was finding some sugar free Butter Pecan ice cream in Lucas Iowa. YUM! That (and Butter Brickle) is my fave!

So... I splurged some, but overall I think I did fairly well.

Thunder is rumbling here right now though and lightning is making itself known. So have to get logged back off, but I am back and hope to get caught up on the computer a bit more tomorrow.

Will be back in touch with the team the 20th as it will be late when I return on the 19th. Will see if I've gained weight, lost weight, or managed to stay the same. LOL.

Regardless, I'm sure it will be a fun & memorable trip.

Off I go.... emoticon

Yes - if you make it to England, definitely have the fish & chips. They're pretty yummy!!

One of the things I'm looking forward to most on my upcoming trip to Iowa is the German fare that is there. emoticon

Will have exercise some restraint though as will be doing some clothes shopping while there too and knowing I still have a ways to go yet, I don't want to buy new clothes that will be hanging off of me in a few weeks.

I'm looking forward to some of the cuisine, I'll have to admit. Now you know I'll have to eat fish and chips just once! (I'll forego the steak and kidney pie, I think.) Oh, yes, my son is single...otherwise he probably wouldn't be inviting me.
emoticon
He is interested in someone though. I almost said maybe you'd better save this trip for your honeymoon, but Mom's don't say stuff like that!lol

Way to go Roberta!! Boy - there are so many different cuisines over there. I don't have any suggestions. I lived there 20 years ago and one thing I continue to miss is the excellent food! My biggest weakness over there though was the German bakeries - and at that time, the beer was pretty tasty too. LOL. That wild streak has long since left though - not a lot of drinking anymore.

So.... is your son single?? LOL

PTL,Roberta!!!

I don't have any ideas, but I think it's absolutely FANTASTIC that you're going to Europe! I guess I'd allow myself 1 ethnic meal per day,and plan ahead for the rest of the time. I bet you never thought that you'd be going to Europe in your lifetime. What a son! Is he married. I wish my daughter were like that. She went to Europe when she was 24,I think.

I am so EXCITED for you!!! emoticon I'm doing the Happy Dance!

Still another challenge. My son surprised me with a trip to Europe the first week in November. Now how in the world (no pun intended) am I going to stay on plan? Hopefully, all the walking we plan to do will offset some of the eating choices I make. If anyone has some ideas, they are welcome here.

If I was vacationing,I would definitely PLAN AHEAD! Take a cooler and instead of use ice,use one of those blue things that you freeze. Not so messy.I'm sure you plan on taking veggies and fruit.I'd allow myself one meal in a restaurant per day...fairly healthy,of course.I'm sure you don't have time to make recipes. There are some great ones on SparkPeople like Applesauce Oatmeal Muffins...rave reviews! And there's also some Turkey Meatloaves that you make in muffin tins, and then freeze. One meatloaf is a serving.

Well... my biggest challenge is ahead of me. That being, remaining healthy while on vacation and especially while traveling.

I will either be cruising to the eastern caribbean (major food obstacles on cruise ships!) or making a road trip to Iowa.

Either one... this will be a definite challenge. I'd be interested in anyone's tips and/or finds while traveling that has helped you not completely blow the healthy eating routine.
