Come Walk With Me

If you are looking for a walk on Saturday the 4th, come walk with me. I have updated the Walking Route link on my site to include estimated times at each mile mark. I am going to try to walk 18-minute miles over the course of 30 miles which will take 9 hours. I will start at 7:30am at the State Capital and finish at approximately 4:30pm at George Green park in Anoka.

I will have a support crew who can transport 1-3 people at a time back to their parked cars if needed.

www.truthdrivenllc.com
Follow the Alexandra House link.
Click on the Walking Route link when you get to the site page about the walk.

I hope to meet a few of you Saturday.

Sarge - congratulations on your fantastic progress!! I'm very excited for you!

Will you have someone trailing you with a car, or have check-points on your walk so you can get fresh cool water (instead of having to carry it)?

For easy to eat snacks, I'm thinking
bananas & oranges (esp if someone peels it and hands it to you and takes care of the peel).
Luna (or other) energy bars
Apples - you can toss the core.
Celery or cucumber - lots of water in them.
String cheese or any other firm cheese.

Thanks for the support Marsha. The groups and boards have been a great source of encouragement for me as I push myself beyond my preconceived limitations and achieve goals I've only imagined. This Saturday has another milestone awaiting me. 24 miles is the final long walk before the 30 mile gig two weeks later. It's funny how things change. I'm not considering the 9 and 7 milers the past two nights as long anymore. Those are now the intermediate walks. A couple short months ago, that 10 mile walk I took was pretty intimidating as I started out. WOW! A step of faith and the whole perspective has changed.

I have been AWOL the past two weeks, but maybe it was noticed by only a few people. I explained it somewhat in my latest blog, for those who are interested, 9/14/2008: It Has All Caught Up To Me.

I have tried to put together a more comprehensive page to document my 30 mile walk for Alexandra House and domestic abuse. Again, for those who are interested, it can be found at http://firstgo.truthdrivenllc.com/

As the time demands lessen over the coming weeks, I hope to become more active here once again.

Have a good week everybody.

Hi Sarge, wondered where you were, hadn't seen any posts in quite a while on the 50+ site. I just want to wish you the best of luck on your walk, it sounds like you are gearing up for this and I am sure you'll accomplish this and for a very good cause.

Last night after I got home from work, I dropped everything, changed clothes, and headed out for a walk. I went nine miles and felt fairly fresh when I was done. Three months ago four miles would have brought me home huffing and puffing and looking for the couch to collapse on. That alone has made this adventure worth taking.

Today I believe I will do a load of strength training and take a more casual four mile walk.

Since my wife works tomorrow, I think I'll walk to and from church. That will be a pair of six mile walks sandwiched around a two hour break.

That brings me to Monday. I am thinking it's time to reach a new mark and go for twenty miles. Again, my wife will be at work, so walking from six to eleven won't take anything away from the holiday for us.

After last weekend's sixteen miles, I was thinking I may have to try the thirty mile walk at twenty minutes per mile the whole way to make it to the finish. But after the nine last night at fifteen per, I think I'll stick to the tapering plan I have right now. Of course everything on October fourth will dictate the pace I actually use.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend everyone.

What will it take?????

TRAINING, TRAINING , TRAINING!!!! Do not attempt that walk without training. Go on line and research how much you have to walk a day to be able to walk that far. Marathon runners train and train for their races.

Walkers must do so as well!!!

Hi! I'm Sarge.

For some time now I have wondered what it would take to walk from my house in Anoka, MN, to my parents' house in St. Paul. The trip is approximately 30 miles depending upon the route taken. I wondered if I had the stamina and was interested in the challenge. I have had many gout attacks and my feet have been screwed up enough that any dreams of running a marathon have long since died away.

Recently I was pondering this challenge and I began to think that it would be a good thing to have a purpose behind the walk. Alexandra House came to mind and I have not been able to shake it. I feel inspired to do the walk and raise awareness for Alexandra House in my local area.

Alexandra House is a domestic abuse shelter with programs for education on the subject that they take into the community. A noble cause I figure. You can learn more about them by following the links in my blogs.

So how does one go about a 30 mile walk?

I started by selecting a date which was far enough away to allow time for training but close enough to be a reality with a bit of urgency so I would actually get started. September was busy with Labor Day, a wedding and a few other things, so I settled on Saturday, October 4th. The interesting things I learned after setting the date was that October happens to be Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, and Alexandra House has their annual Walk For Hope the following Saturday, October 11th. How could that have worked out any better. I decided that I need to get in touch with someone over there to see if they can use my walk to promote their event. How cool would that be?

I found another site that has training programs for walks and runs of this length and got a lot of helpful information. If you know of applicable articles on this site, please let me know what they are so I can check them out.

I need to come up with easy to eat and easy to digest energy snacks for along the day which could be 8 to 10 hours of walking depending on the pace I can maintain. Please help me out with any ideas you may have in this area.

One other thing I ask, please follow up on me at my Spark Page. I blog about my training progress and can use all the support I can get. My latest update was this past Saturday after my 16 mile walk, the longest of my life. I have a long way to go and little time to get there.

Join me in this pursuit of personal accomplishment and community awareness. Hopefully you will be inspired to do something in your community as well. Please take this message to your groups as this issue is worthy of awareness being raised where ever you may be.

Blessings to you and yours,

Sarge emoticon
