Lemme see, what must I keep on hand....

Used to require Diet Cokes, but I haven't had one in 3 days!

Splenda
Coffee (hubby)
Cat & doggy food (or there will be a revolt in my house!)
Salad fixings: lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, green onions, celery, cucumber
Baby carrots
Chicken & Vegie Stock
Uncle Ben's Brown Rice (I just throw it in my rice cooker & it's terrific!)
Eggs (no substitutes - my hubby is a purist!)
Lean ground beef and/or ground turkey
Turkey cutlets (thin)
Frozen Chicken Breasts
Frozen "stir fry" vegie mixes
Microwave Popcorn (100 cal. bags)
100 calorie bags of snacks! Gotta love em!
Wheat Bread
Wheat English Muffins
Whole Wheat Pasta
Canned Tomatoes of any form
Any produce that looks good that day (esp. oranges & bananas!)

Sorry, I'm in the process of making my weekly list now, so I kinda went over the limit, lol,!

There are three things I *have* to have at home - these are the reasons I will make a trip to the grocery store:
1. skim milk
2. instant oatmeal
3. apples

The first two are my daily breakfast (0.5cup oatmeal, 1 cup milk, microwave for 2 minutes, add a little brown sugar and cinnamon) and the third is a snack I have at least once a day.

Other things I try to keep on hand:
- Uncle Ben's 10 minute whole grain brown rice (I know the longer-to-cook stuff is probably more nutritious, but I don't have the patience for rice that takes 45 minutes to cook!)
- fresh broccoli and/or snowpeas and/or spinach
- canned fat-free refried beans. (I like the Taco Bell brand - 100cals/0.5 cup, high in fiber & protein)
- new favorite: Thomas multigrain light English Muffins - 100cals each & high fiber & surprisingly yummy
- eggs - although I usually will make an omelet w/ 1 whole egg and 2-3 egg whites to make it healthier
- pre-shredded cheese...just gotta watch the portions.

...I'm sure I have other staples, but that's whats coming to me off the top of my head.

Ours are:

1) ground turkey
2) chicken breast
3) rice
4) whole grain pasta
5) canned tomatoes (diced & sauce)
6) skim milk
7) turkey bacon
8) eggs
9) cheerios
10) whole wheat bread

ok its not quite just 10

11) apples
12) peanut butter
13) salad makings (we like romaine lettuce, carrots, cucumbers and radishes)
14) frozen veggies

If you have spices on hand you can make so much out of these things.

I did a quick search... found two types:

GreenBags www.greenbags.com/?cid=371853

and

Evert Fresh Green Bags from Amazon:
www.amazon.com/Evert-Fresh-Green-Bag
s-
Small-vegetables/dp/B000ICKT4W

the price on Amazon is good, but you'd probably need a couple of other items or shipping might be as much as the product. If you try them, let me know how they work.

Oh, ps, the search I did was in Google and was green bags veggies

I've heard about these two and from folks who swear the work. I think they are available at places like Whole Foods or organic food markets, but I can't remember the name either. And, every time I'm in Whole Foods I forget to look.

I've seen a commercial a few times about "Green bags". They're for produce, and they keep things fresh longer. Supposedly, it's some gas(in the plastic produce bags?)that makes the stuff go bad faster. Of course,I don't remember the name of the woman who created them, but you do have to order them on-line or on the telephone. Sound familiar to anybody? I usually wait...these kinds of products eventually are available retail.

Wow... I've lived by myself for half my life and I don't know if I can come up with 10.

I liked Sandy's list.

Peanut Butter
Tuna (canned for tuna salad)
mini ears of corn on the cob (frozen)
beans (take your pick)
hamburger or ground turkey
rice (this is pretty recent, but it makes a tasty lunch mixed with beans)
eggs
some type of chicken breast
and, then, alas, I usually keep several frozen dinners on hand from Weight Watchers to Morningstar Farms and Alexia brand chicken nuggets)

Instead of the ground beef I use ground turkey. Also, on the tuna. Is that tuna fillets or canned tuna. Both are good for us. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hey Everyone!

Whether we are shopping/cooking for just ourselves or one other person, we have to carefully consider what we buy. Because I am on a limited budget and new to shopping and cooking for myself, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing the top 5-10 staple items you buy/have on hand that make for delivious, nutritious, and healthy meals for yourself/one other person. Thanks!
