I'm a former Burlesque performer from Detroit; I had a troupe that was all BBW's for a while a couple years ago. My stage name was Vivienne Au Lait. Well, I live in Orlando now and I am desperately out of practice; I can't even walk in high heels anymore like I used to. Blah. But I am very much wanting to get back into it; I did find a venue that has BBW Burlesque and that works for me because I do not plan to get down below 170 pounds. I don't desire to be skinny; I only desire to be out of the "obese" range on the BMI chart. I don't want to lose my curves. :)

Those who say it can not be done should get the hell out of the way of the ones that are doing it.

Good Luck :) It's so much fun, i'm sure you will be asked back!!! Good kittens are a HUGE asset to a show and anyone willing to put their heart and time into something like burlesque should always be asked to come back. Do you hope to perform one day also?

Yeah i have heard that a lot from a few of my friends in the USA that "bigger" girls are having a hard time dealing in certain circles.. which sucks.. we are all awesome no matter what the size. I have had the best comments toward me since doing burlesque (and i admit the worst) but i chose to do this for myself.. afterall its me thats on stage and if they can't handle all the awesome that is me then thats there problem.
Hopefully things will get better for you down there. Keep up the great work

Welcome back :) I love that Canada is so forward with burlesque!!!! Down here in South Florida it has been quite the challenge since we are not quite on the map. The South Beach myth is true even in burlesque, only the skinny sexy may apply.

I don't do burlesque, per se. I am in a cabaret group. Our 'look' is very burlesque in style, but our focus is more on musical numbers and dance performances (i.e. we're not as 'sketch' oriented as real burlesque). A good friend of mine is in a burlesque performance troupe though and they do some amazing shows. Much love for the art of burlesque!

I've been obsessed with Burlesque dancing since I accidently saw a dancer at Mardi Gras...when I was 6!!! I have been trying out the moves only in the last two years, though.

I would love to do burlesque. It is such a beautiful art form that celebrates the human form in an amazing combination of dance, theater, and sensuality. I have done it at home (with all the blinds shut!) but maybe once I get to my goal weight (and feel more confident) I'd like to take a class. emoticon

I reply from three years in the future!

Rae Baby, I'm in a similar situation. I've actually loved Burlesque since I first saw Gypsy, but I was a teacher for 5 years and I'm now in training to be a school librarian and it just feels like trying to perform publicly would be asking for a whole lot of trouble in your day job. It makes me sad.

I try to go see my local group (Black Cherry Burlesque, in Tucson AZ) whenever I can. Once upon a time, they had invited me to join, but as my brothers really love their shows, I declined.
I perform at home for my husband. I don't have access to a bunch of costumes or anything (other than belly dance stuff) so I usually just start going with whatever I have on. lol!

Sadly, no. I don't know if its just that I don't know where or how to look but despite living in the Twin Cities I haven't found one class that offers it. I have some Burlesque DVDs on my Amazon wish list but with how close it is to Christmas I shouldn't buy them.

Does anyone have any tips on breaking into the circle? :P

I'll be taking classes soon, starting on the 13th of September. I'm really excited, but also nervous!
Does anyone have any experience with burlesque classes in general? I'm doing a 4-class format with the Boston Babydolls, but any info will do.

Now I photograph other folks doing their act when I get a chance.

Hi everyone!

I am a veteran burlesque performer from Chicago, having been active in the scene for over seven years. I produce and direct a local troupe here, the Belmont Burlesque Revue, as well as co-produce the Windy City Burlesque Fest.

Classes are an excellent way to get a peek into performing - I highly recommend them to anyone interested in burlesque. Michelle L'Amour and Princess Farhana both have excellent DVDs you can use at home as well.

The biggest component to successful burlesquing is self-confidence. There is honestly no wrong way to do it if you feel good in your own skin.

As to the member who is interested in Suicide Girls - you probably want to stay away from them. I'm not saying it's wrong for everyone, but on the business side of things in that particular organization, the performers get the short end of the stick. You're better off working with a local troupe or producer and building your acts and reputation up that way. I'm happy to suggest some folks to talk to if you're still interested.

How does one get into this sort of thing? I've always wanted to learn, but I've never seen any classes or performances near me. It seems so lucritive; like an ancient chinese secret that references the vintage and the beautiful.

I haven't done burlesque but I desperately want to do so. There is a local troupe that performs every month or so at a goth club I frequent and they're always asking for people who want to try it out. I guess I'm not sure how to go about practicing.

I never have but I am dying to! I think I should make that a goal. It's sad because I live so close to the city and there are classes going on all the time. I think it's always been a fantasy. So classy and a little trashy at the same time. I hope to be in burlesque shape by the summer!

I am in the midst of a class right now, and am quite enjoying it. I wasn't able to take the full performance package of classes this round, but plan to do the winter session with them, and when they offer a performance series again in the spring, I am definitely gonna do that!!!

I just took my first "in person"(not a dvd) burlesque class...it was awsome! I love learning new things from an actual real live person instead of a recorded one. You can take away so much more from the experience. She is having a student recital this upcoming spring. Maybe I will do it!

Hi There!!

I'm just getting into Burlesque and I love it. I've always been interested in it. I don't think I'd ever perform, as I'm a teacher and it just doesn't fit. But I love feeling confident and sexy in my living room as a show off what I've got.

I have the Goddess Life Cardio Burlesque DVD and It's slow after the first time but good fun.

I am a big admirer of burlesque and would love to be a member of a troupe at some point in the future. I love dance and have studied many different types. It would be so much fun to perform in a venue that was set up appropriately to really enjoy burlesque too. Definitely a goal in my future when I am feeling more comfortable on stage again.

I just wanted to know how many here actually do burlesque. In your home still counts! I do a little but I am still so shy about it that I only practice when alone.
