Since I have been on water fasts for medical reasons I can say that they really seem to reduce your cravings. I did not even feel like eating after the last one in December before my surgery. 24 hours seems to have good benefits and have had to do it for 48 before but I would never do more then that. It is like it resits your metabolism.
I know someone who did a water fast for 23 days. He says he used some supplements and added cayenne and some other stuff to the water. He also said it only works if prayer is part of it. As for me, I don't want to do something like that. When the sugar gets out of hand, I resort to probiotics which seem to kill the cravings. It's time to do that. A sales manager of my husband's brought us some really, really good chocolate which is not at least %70, or preferably %85. I can usually ignore that sutff, but... So, probiotics, here I come. Kathy

I broke myself of the sugar following low carb diets and the initial 2 weeks you cant have any fruit or sugar or starches at all. Really it only took about 3 days for me to stop craving it. Once you just learn to like the taste of things that aren't sweet it doesn't taste as good anymore.
Never did a water fast to get rid of chocolate. I eat the dark chocolate and that has a little sugar and that satisfies me. It is a bitter chocolate and that may be what you need to do. I get either Black & Green Organic Chocolate with 70% cocoa or higher or the Lindt chocolate with the same percent cocoa in it.
If you tell God no because He won't explain the reason He wants you to do something, you are actually hindering His blessing. I have been gluten free now for almost a year. I am now trying to get rid of my next bad habit: Sugar. The acupuncturist thinks I should avoid all white refined sugar and only get sugar through fruit. He'd like me to also limit the amount of fruit I eat. I have been struggling with this. I really crave chocolate, I was going to try doing a one day water fast and get rid of the addiction to chocolate. I did this many years ago. One day and then I never really craved it again. I did without sugar this way for 3 years... How does everyone else feel about a one day water fast? I tried one last Tuesday but stopped and bought soup on my way home from work. I was going to try it again this week and see if I could succeed. Everything online talks about having nothing but water for weeks at a time. Sorry, I think that's a little radical.
