It is the new bill that give the FDA even more power to control our food supply. Include Homeland Security in that group as well.

Like most things (including legislation) the devil is in the details.

Small farmers may have to pay $500 fee to get signed up and keep so many records that basically they will be forced out of business. Same thing with small ranchers.

Some R's were trying to get some exemptions put in, but it doesn't say what did and didn't make it in the final bill. Besides, they say it will take 2 yrs to write the rules. Write the Rules?

Why are they voting on something without the Rules?

Recently, a small local farm that produces milk, cheese, and sells eggs had the FDA come to their place. Their chickens were free from disease but EVERY ONE of their chickens had to be destroyed because the farm from which they came was contaminated. Every chick they sold had to be destroyed. The farm is about an hour from my house I have been there and seen it myself.

The gentleman sells low pasteurized milk to a local healthfood store. They were selling eggs before their flock was destroyed. And now the FDA has the power to do more?

A friend from California said they are horrible about coming onto small farms in her area and destroying animals and products and basically the entire business.

What they say and what they are already doing are two totally different things. They just have more room now to do it legally.

What Food Safety Act is that? We have a taqueria up the street too that does the same thing. The little whole in the wall places are usually the best.

We've got a couple of those mass marketed taco places that you can't eat at.

I'm lucky though we have a taqueria down the street that makes everything fresh and whole. They will replace the flour tortillas with corn for me if I want a quesadilla. Their tostadas are wonderful!

Once a restaurant has to mass produce food cheaply they start cutting corners and putting junk fillers in their food.

It's not safe. I don't know how the new Food Safety Act they just passed is going to affect us, but I'm sure they'll find some way of screwing us up.

There's nothing at Taco Bell that's gluten free. They're website says the beans and rice are the only thing.

I wouldn't even trust the beans and rice at Taco Bell. When I was eating gluten I'd watch them slap the spoon of beans on the shell then back in the pan contaminating the whole pan.

Most Mexican restaurants around here usually just have to worry about the chips being fried with CC oil and Mole.

Yeah there are a lot of places that do just stare at you...or put a roll on your GF dinner!

I wish I was able to find a taco place around here other than Taco Bell! We can't have anything there except like a side of beans I think! There is one local Mexican restaurant I need to call and ask about their food just haven't gotten around to it.

On our way home at 12am we pulled into a fast food place called Taco Cabana. They have several of these around the Dallas metroplex. (I couldn't believe they were still open!)

I got 2 soft beef tacos. I don't know if they really tasted that good or if I was just that hungry but boy were they delish! AND Gluten free.

I can eat corn so soft corn tortillas work for me.

What a relief and a little bit of heaven...especially as I had taken a pain pill earlier and really needed something in my stomach.

emoticon that must of been frustrating. My brother is a caterer and thank goodness he is sensitive to the needs of people with celiac disease and other food allergies, in fact he has given me many recipes and products to purchase that are gluten-free.

I went to my husband's Christmas party last night and it was catered by a well known Italian restaurant. The ONLY thing in the building that I could eat was their too tough to chew green beans (suffering from TMJ and only eating soft foods) and the nuts on the table.

So, I agree with you about some people having no clue. I love it when you say I can't eat wheat, trying to make it simple, and they say: "oh, we have white."
My dilemma this time of year is potlucks. Unless I know the person who's made something, I just assume it has gluten and don't eat it. It's easier to host one, and have some control.
The other day I went to a luncheon. The woman in charge is a dool. I brought GF brownies to share, even though I knew they were having a cake. At first they wanted to refuse, but I explained. I also brought my own bread, but still got something. The pork was cooked without sauce. I thought the cole slaw was safe, but....
Ideas? Also, I found out the one brand of chili sauce here is GF and one is not.

That's cool Cindy that Wendy's would do that for you. That shows great customer service. Unfortunately unless the place has a gluten free menu like Jason's Deli or Pf Changs asking anyone around here if something like chili has wheat flour in it leads to blank stares.

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to share that although I almost never eat fast food anymore after watching "Supersize Me" I had a great experience at a Wendys. The clerk and manager were very knowledgeable and knew I was gluten intolerant before I said so by what I ordered. They assured me I would be OK, ensured the cook changed gloves and cleaned the area, they fessed up that the dedicated fryer may not be (they "cheat" when busy) and offerred me a fresh side salad that they made for me so I didn't have to risk the pre-prepped ones. It was way more than I would have expected for someplace like that! If I am caught unprepared again I will definitely choose Wendys!

When I want something fast I eat at Chipotle. We also have a local taqueria that makes tostadas (with corn tortillas) and all fresh ingredients.

Fortunately for me my hubby doesn't like to eat Fast food. When we stop we find someplace to go in and eat.

It made it easy for me once I developed food allergies.

I get the taco salad at Wendy's, and it doesn't bother me, but I don't eat the taco chips, or the salad dressing. A lot of fast food salad dressings contain modified food starch which I can't have.

The one time I had to eat at a fast food place, it was Wendy's. I had a salad, as the Asian noodles were in a separate packet, and I have trouble with beans sometimes.
My in-laws fave place is Panera and they told me that their meats weren't guaranteed GF. The only thing safe was a salad with no protein, and the apple and chips. What do you eat there?
Fries in peanut oil? I knew that many places coated their fries in wheat, but the peanut oil can be lethal to me and my son! The wheat would just make me miserable. Good thing I don't order them.
BTW, I had to insist at a restaurant that they look at the sweet potato fries. They assured me they were fine, and they weren't. The Trader Joe's brand has wheat, but I have seen some without.

I have found that the Panera near me keeps an ingredients book at the counter. They are willing to look up anything on their menu and make sure to avoid allergens. I have eaten there several times and have been ok (I am very sensitive to gluten and have to avoid dairy as well).

DON'T eat at taco Bell - everything has wheat in it or high chance of cross contamination which is rice and beans but I've seen them slap the beans or rice on a flour shell then put the spoon back in the pan contaminating the whole pan.

I'll eat at Wendy's and get chili and a potato. Some of their salads are OK but overpriced for me.

Love Chipotle - tell them you have "allergies" and they'll walk your order down the line.

Carl Jr will lettuce wrap any of their burgers just have to be specific about putting paper down and wash hands or will put the lettuce on the line where the buns have been. Some places fries are OK - have to check for dedicated or not.

5 Guys are OK, have to watch them make your sandwich, I've watched them make my order, see no bun, throw the bun away then serve it, plus it's hard for them to make it without a bun. They're fries are safe unless you have peanut allergies since they fry them in peanut oil.

McDonalds you can have the burger patty - but why(sorry worked there too long and didn't like it before working there).

BK burgers are gluten free? Is that true? Sometimes I really crave a hamburger patty. I'm sure I'm not getting enough protein.

Where I live there are lots of street taco venders selling real beef (as opposed to hamburger) tacos in corn tortillas, and that's my go-to for fast food. I haven't tried the regular hamburger meat tacos at Taco Bell and such - does anyone know if their meat has wheat in it?

The only restaurants I eat at are the ones that have a gluten free menu. I can't afford the possibility of cross contamination. I won't eat at any of the fast food restaurants ie. McDonald's, BK, Wendy's etc. I did have a salad at Panera the other day but I made sure they knew that I had celiac disease and was unable to tolerate gluten or cross contamination. I didn't get sick even though I knew it was a gamble. I probably won't do it again though just to be safe.

So, spark has been featuring lots of suggestions for healthier fast food. Most of them are totally not okay for us. So, what does one do when out and in a hurry?
Is there anything out there on a fast food menu for breakfast? Also, I always get salads, but know that some chicken is pumped full of wheat. Can't do corn. I know that BK's burgers are GF, but kind of messy when not on a bun, which I won't do, natch!
Now, I almost never am in such a position, but was last week. I ate a protein bar. Just wondering if anyone has found solutions for those rare situations. Thanks.
