MAINE

Maine is the only state in the United States whose name has one syllable.

Maine produces 99% of all the blueberries in the country making it the single largest producer of blueberries in the United States.

90% of the country’s toothpick supply is produced in Maine

In Wilton there’s a cannery that imports and cans only dandelion greens.

12 Days of Christmas

This is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me.
What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?
Today, I found out.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics.
It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The Partridge in a Pear tree was Jesus Christ.
Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.
The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol...
Merry (Twelve Days of) Christmas Everyone.....

By the time you are 70 you will have easily drunk over 12,000 gallons of water.

During your lifetime, you'll eat about 60,000 pounds of food, that's the weight of 6 elephants.

I tried to get the link to work, but I think it needed a plug-in that my computer either lacks or the plug in is broken. I read reviews on the link and I really wish I could see it. emoticon
The link is fine, it is my computer. I think it need flash or shockwave and I am missing one or both.

More about Snow--Same Source:
According to the Guinness World Records, the largest snowflake ever recorded was a 15-incher that besieged Fort Keogh, Montana in 1887.

Snow is a mineral, just like diamonds and salt.

Did you know,

Over 42,000 gallons of WATER is needed to GROW and Prepare the food for a typical Thanksgiving dinner for eight.
That is enough water to fill a 30'x50' swimming pool.

I have used the sticks of butter to help others see how much they have lost. Your right it does something when you think of fat and stick of butter to visualize.

On another team, I had everyone go to their cupboard and take out cans or items that would equal the weight they lost. Place those in a backpack and carry it around for few hours. Its amazing to feel the weight you used to carry everyday before.

LOL.....I just found this on another team post and copied it to put here and see that it was already here....isn't it funny?

I've lost an elephants *you know* since May.

On the same thread in the other team there was this post:

Weight Watchers has a similar, although not nearly so extensive list, and they remind you that 5 lbs is a sack of potatoes and 1 lbs is 4 sitcks of butter. I liked the butter comparison because there is something about equating "fat" with "fat..." if that makes sense

I've lost 240 sticks of butter....Kind of a weird but gross comparison if you think about it.

IDAHO

In Idaho, its against the law for anyone over the age of 88 to ride a motorcycle

A person may not be seen in public without a smile on their face in Pocatello, Idaho.

Nearly 85 percent of all the commercial trout sold in the United States is produced in the Hagerman Valley near Twin Falls.

One of the largest diamonds ever found in the United States, nearly 20 carats, was discovered near McCall, Idaho

In Idaho law forbids a citizen to give another citizen a box of candy that weighs more than 50 pounds.

We get ice storms in Massachusetts and the other England States do as well. I am in Southeast Massachusetts and most of the real ice and snow generally occurs either along the coast or to our north and west, but we do get them. As far as natural disasters--I think we are in one of the safer places. Earthquakes are so small that we never know they occur most of the time--or if they do, it does little if any damage and is more a curiousity than anything else. We get nor'easters--some worse than others and they can bring the area to a standstill until the snow and debris is cleaned up. Most hurricaines, if we get them, are relatively mild (Category ones) or tropical storms by the time they hit us. The coast tends to get hit worse with the nor'easters and hurricaines than inland areas. We get a few tornados--but most tend to be fairly small--f1's and maybe an f2. We don't usually get too hot or too cold. I think that covers most natural disasters.
The cape cod canal cuts across Cape Cod. Spring is a nice time to go for the bike hike. It's not to hot or too cold (usually) and there are a lot of places to stop on the way (7 miles) to rest, refresh, and visit. It's very pleasant.

Would you say that these states are pretty much safe as far as natural disasters? Do they have ice storms?

Do you remember the show "Mystery She Wrote" Jessica lived in a quaint New England Town. Where most people kinda new each other and looked out for each other. That is my idea of a home town.
I have had my share of making dings and dents in our trailer. Once I parked the trailer under a large tree that overhung into the street. I wanted to stop by and visit with my mother in law. When I came back out a large tree limb sat on top. It hung over the trailer into one of the lanes causing traffic to go around. I tried to pull of the limb, but it stuck at one point so I opened the trailer door to get out my hand clippers, and there coming through the roof was part of the limb! emoticon Keep in mind that I am by myself and just came from the RV center for maintenance.
The insurance came out and decided to put a new roof on and somehow they also added in a new side canopy that had been slightly torn but because of the roof that slopes down where we back our trailer in. I have certainly had my share. I also tore off a vent hatch pulling through Vons. Caution look up as well as around! emoticon

Karen,
I know what you mean about those mammoth RV's. It amazes me that people can get those into a campsite. We (my family) like to watch them as they are backing in to see how many tries it takes. Some of those RV'rs are pretty skilled but we've seen lots of them take out campsite markers, trees, etc. I've never tried golfing, but I've been considering trying it out. I've done mini-golf though (LOL)
You might find Provincetown, MA and Glouster, MA(badly spelled). They are quaint, artsy seaside communities and Salem, MA has the "witchcraft" museums and is also seaside. If you like biking, there is a municipal campground near the bourne bridge on CapeCod that has direct access to a biking trail along the capecod canal. It's quite lovely and an easy ride--you can ride down to a beach where you can spend some time or head back. There is also camping available near the beach but it is tough to get a reservation, at least it is if you leave in the State.

It is a beautiful country. We have not been to the Death Valley either. Just the name of it! But I hear it is quite interesting. I have been to Joshua Trees, but we are more likely to stay at one of the Outdoor RV resorts in Cathedral City. They have a 18 hole golf course that runs through the middle of the RV resort.
When we pull our little 25' trailer in next to these Mammoth RV's from Canada and all over, we get to see these retired folks all gather at 5:30 around someones RV for drinks and an appetizer. This resort has top of the line club houses, mini market, pool & spa, tennis courts, and all the activities that you can sign up for. The have so many events. Bingo, dancing, etc. I can't wait for my husband to retire in 9 more years, counting down.
Next time we go, will be when the Canadian's fly back and leave us a spot. Then I will take some pictures of this amazing rv resort.
Every time we show up, they think we have the wrong address. I don't know if it is because of our ages, or our lil trailer. LOL.
I think one of my favorite places that I visited in the New England States was Newport, Rhode Island and I Maine. I like small quaint communities. Tired of LA. I would like to go back and spend more time there then just a guided bus tour. I would probably not go back to Martha's Vineyard. Unless I could stay the night in the Vanderbuilts waterfront property. LOL.

Karen,
From my home I can get to an ocean in less than 1 hour and a small mountain range in under 2 hours. I love the foliage in NewEngland and the seasonal changes. One thing you have that I would love is the proximity of the desert. I've never been to Death Valley--not yet anyway, but I've been to the Mojave and sonoron desert, the painted desert, the 4 corners region with the desert landscapes, arches, all of it. I love deserts! They are one of my favorite places to visit. So full or life and the diversity of life there is incredible. Joshua tree! Some day, I hope to make it to Death Valley and I will. It's a beautiful country we have here!

Gemstone, those are very interesting facts. I will share those with DH. In looking at the geological landscape of CA., it is very diversified. Having one of our mountain ranges of Mt. Whitney at 12,000 ft. above sea level and Death Valley at the lowest of 100 ft below sea level.
From our house, the beach, the desert, and the mountains are all within 1 1/2 hour drive in opposite directions of course ! So it is nice to be able to get warmer or cooler. I do wish that we had the foliage change of the brilliant colors as does in the New England states. That is dramatic! Nature at her best.

This was quite the controversy for some time. Scienctist could not prove this theory of the plates moving that far away, but the Geo-scienctist were able to show the ocean floor had certain rocks that were originated from one side scattered along the trail of the movements of the plates.
So it is still a possibility that the fault line in CA is still active and moving and that in millions of years it should be broken off and moving its way to Alaska!

Ever notice on a map how the South American and African coasts, along the Atlantic, fit together like two pieces of a giant puzzle? That's because at one time, millions of years ago, they were one continent. Magma from deep in the Earth broke through thin places between these continents and pushed them apart. They are still slowly moving apart and the Atlantic ocean is growing wider.

Karen, thanks for the words of wisdom. I needed to hear them. And I'm sure you're right. You said what I've felt, shock. That's how I feel. Thanks for putting how I've been feeling into words for me. I have to make some calls Monday and get in to see the Gastro doctor. I think that's probably where I need to start.

The pups name is now Sassy. I'd originally named her Taffy, but had her home a week when I changed it. Guess that speaks for her personality, right?! emoticon

But that's okay, cause she's still a little doll. Just a fiesty one! Hope you're having a good day. emoticon

Dear Lauren, Please do not underestimate the major surgery that your body has just undergone. Your brain may register that you are in good condition and should be active, but the rest of your body is going through MAJOR changes. It takes longer for our brain to register the truth and sometimes we trick it into thinking a certain way.
I certainly think that the best thing you could possibly do for yourself would be to call or make any appointment and let him know exactly how you are doing.
As miraculous as our bodies are I do think that your body may still be in shock and adjusting. And the fact that you are feeling weak should be of concern to your physician as well.
Poor Lauren! Hang in there. Keep up your good eating habits and rest. I shall continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. At the top needless to say! Gentle emoticon to you.

Yep, I'm being careful, but it's getting on my nerves. I have this massive pile of undone work and can't do it. I've taken to doing little bits and pieces at a time, just so that I can feel useful.

I'm not doing well at all with my eating, though. I started it by eating pizza the other day, and it's just migrated from there. I've felt so weak, I think my body thought that it needed more, and maybe it did, but I'm worried now that I've started something I can't stop.

I plan to start fresh tomorrow but what eating plan, I'm not sure. I guess a modified carb one is probably the best one for me. And I guess that's what I'll do. I am concerned about why I'm so weak so much of the time. With them having taken out so much of my colon, and that's where the nutrients from our food is absorbed, I'm wondering if it has anything to do with it. I guess a visit with my Gastro doctor needs to be next.

Ahhh, I'm sorry, I don't mean to complain. I should be singing from the rooftop that the surgery is done and over with. I just didn't expect so many lingering problems. And I don't like feeling under the weather. And I'm impatient. And...well, you know me, I could go on forever...

So glad that you're alright! I had heard that they knew it was arson but not anything more past that. I'm glad that they have managed to find one of them. Terrible person to cause such devastation with the loss of lives and the massive destruction. The cancer treatment connection to other cancers is so unfair. Thank goodness it doesn't happen to every cancer survivor but it shouldn't happen to any of them!

Fine thank you. Just staying inside. I reduced my intake of calories to 1200, while I am not doing any cardio. Just drinking lots of water too. They arrested a native Guatemalin in connection with starting one of the fires. Hopefully others will be brought to justice.
I was watching a program that discussed the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, and the side effect is the possibility of other types of cancers?
Also watched CNN in regards to the progress of our partnership with Iraq.
It sounded like things are going quite possibly well, when you are able to get two opposing religions to sit at the same table and talk of truce and peace.
It sounded to ME, that we were there to help promote peace talks and resolution to their many problems. That was the best news I have heard in so long from the Middle East.
It is becoming more of peace talks. Things are looking better for our troops. They are already heroes in my eyes. emoticon
Hope that you guys are having a nice day.
And you guys are always in my thoughts.
And if I get to patriotic, let me know!!

Is Pluto the ninth planet or the eighth from the sun? The answer is both. For most of its 248 year orbit around the sun it is the ninth planet. But for 20 years of its long orbit, Pluto is actually closer than Neptune. From 1979 to early 1999, Pluto moved inside the orbit of Neptune and became the eighth planet!

Skunks have a very effective defense system. They "shoot" at whatever they perceive is threatening them a very stinky spray, one that's almost impossible to get rid of. They are only able to shoot this yukky spray roughly 2 yards, BUT, we can smell it for up to 2 and a half miles away!

I'd say those little buggers have cornered the market on isolation!

Thanks Lauren, it does sound good. And most of the ingredients look familiar, except the honey. And I LUV honey! Sounds easy and tasty. I'll give it a try this week. We are not picky, my family likes 98% of what I cook. They just do not like fish, and I DO!! Thanks

Karen, I don't know if you'd consider this a good recipe or not, but it sure is tasty, and even though I've only made it with beef, I'm sure it could be made with ground turkey, or even chicken, for that matter.

Fry 20 ounces of your meat with a chopped onion and a minced clove of garlic. For beef, I use ground sirloin. After it's cooked, mix in 1 drained 16 ounce can of Bush's Black Beans (the non-seasoned variety), 2 drained 15 ounce cans of any Organic Red Kidney Beans (I like Libby's the best), and 3 cups of plain tomato juice. Season to taste with salt and Cayenne pepper, a tablespoon of honey, and simmer on low until it thickens.

David and I love it. It has a unique flavor and is really good. It's become a staple for us.

If you decide to try it, I hope you like it.

Lauren

I like the little trivia also.. never know when it might be used as a conversation starter. Or the winning question in a challenge/game.

I knew about the tomato, but not the banana. That's a very interesting piece of information. I love to toss little trivia like that around! Thanks.

And I am proud of you! You are a wonderful person. And you are a blessing to those around you. Life is so complexed and you chose to look at fate in an incredible giving way. I surely have underestimated the depth in which you have survived. emoticon

I manage okay I guess. I'm sure I will be facing changing hormones soon, lol. My girls already think they are grown. I actually have three daughters but the oldest technically is not mine. I was raped when I was 13 and had her. That is not the reason I allowed her to be adopted though. I tried my best til she was almost two to do all I could to take care of her, but lets face it, back then at that age there was not much I could do. Too young for most jobs- too young for assistance and at the time they would not even allow me to return to school. It broke my hear back then to sign those papers but I knew it was the best thing. On a bright note I see her all the time and where I am moving I will actually be able to see her daily. I've never told her about the rape because she does not deserve that kind of pain or any thoughts that is why I gave her away. She is a straight A student and in several honors classes as well as still having next year before graduating and already the scholarships are pouring in. I am sooo proud of her.

That's interesting about your town, Gemstone. After I had read your post earlier, I thought about Grandpa & Grandma Barnard coming from the Ohio and Pennsylvania area. If they had not moved, I wonder where I would have been? But, I am trying to visualize retiring in the Colorado or Montana area. Hopefully a small but friendly town like your own. We originally were citrus farmers out here, and grandpa enjoyed becoming a pastor in his church in Arcadia. Interesting how life has changed in our family since then. No more wash boards either right!

I live in a town which is listed as having the largest population of children under 18 in the state. We try, as a town, to do a lot for families. We have an arts center, roller park, lots of ball fields, downtown holiday events and parades. I've lived here for nearly 30 years and I've watched the town grow and evolve. I guess I lucked out. I feel safe here and most of the "crime" involves "protective custody" during big art (as in rock music) events. We just got a mall in town this past week. Stores are starting to open and it's kind of exciting. That should give you an idea of how small it is. In 2005 we were listed in the top 100 places to live in the US.

I'm Blessed to live in decent neighborhood at the moment. I have lived in worse where I would not have taken the kids out at all. The girls are wanting to dress Manuel up this year- who is just turning 15 months today. I'm still trying to decide on that one.

My 15yo likes to "stick around being creepy" as he states it. It means he enjoys dressing up and wandering the premises giving out candy to the trick or treaters. He usually goes out a bit to the nearby neighbors as well (5 or 6 homes) who he knows really well. We do our yard up pretty elaborately so I don't think he feels like he is losing anything on Halloween plus we have a camping weekend (with parades, dances, contests, etc.) that he can enjoy and a Halloween parade in Town that he marches in as part of the High School Band. The kids can dress up for that as well. I think he never feels deprived at Halloween.

We are doing the mini tootsie pops. I enjoy just looking at the spectrum of kids that come by. I think I am going to make a pot of chili with cornbread to eat that evening and maybe some warned up cider!

I usually take the girls out for about an hour- a lot of that to the local shops which seems a bit safer to me at least. Then we hand out candy the rest of the night. I'm trying to decide if I can find something healthier to hand out this year but still budget friendly.

I believe you have a young daughter? Are you going to take her out on Halloween? My 3 teens are 13, 13, and 15, the twins want to go out but I told them they could give out the candy instead this year. I think I devasted them with disapointment. I am such a meannie!
What to do?

How could you possibly do that is the month of October! I can not walk a store with out seeing many Halloween temptations! So I broke down and bought the lollipops. But still at 60 cals a piece! Maybe I should join you on this challenge after I have had my chocolate palate happy! emoticon

I buy it at WalMart--$1.68 for a 3.5 oz bar. There are 2.5 servings per bar and each serving is 210 cal., 18 gr. fat, 8 carbs, 3 fiber, 5 sugar, 4 protein.
It has a real chocolate taste. I never liked the sweetness of milk chocolate--the sugar masked the chocolate flavor so this stuff, to me is heaven when I want chocolate. I also like it because I am diabetic and the low carb, high fiber content of the product is favorable and it is not sugar free and has no artificial sugar in it.
