I think those are great examples of success for anyone. I don't think I really noticed how large I had become until I saw myself in pictures. I tossed the pictures in the trash and "that was that". Not that I changed anything or tried to "fix myself" because I was perfectly happy with myself. It really did take a major health scare to force me to really make the changes.
I don't think I really did a lot of "emotional" eating, but I did do a lot of unconscious, boredom, habitual eating and that was my downfall.

My very first victory was walking up the stairs without having to stop. I will never forget that!

I think for me my biggest success so far has been the ability to better control my emotional eating. I have had many days over the last few months that would have sent me into the sweets, chips and such. Even my husband made the comment of how well I was doing on this one. Thank you sparkpeople!

David, I know what you mean about not seeing that other person. Actually awhile back in one of my blogs I wrote about something similar. I never saw myself as obese or fat. I just saw me. Then I saw a picture that someone took without me knowing. I cried so hard, it couldn't have been me in that photo. Even today when I look in the mirror after losing 50 pounds, I still see the same person as before. I'm not sure if at any weight I will see anyone that looks different to me. I believe that I see me for who I am not what I look like. Even though I know my weight.

David,
Those are probably the best successes of all that you just listed because they are the ones that will make a difference in success at meeting your goals or not.
I wrestled with portion control and no one was going to tell me what to eat or how much and I took great offense if I thought someone was paying too much attention to what I saw as a personal choice.

I never paid attention to my weight until the doctor told me I had diabetes. I was happy and I didn't really care about my size or what other people thought about it. I don't think your statement is ridiculous at all because I can really relate to it.

I made lots of excuses about why I couldn't find the time to exercise. It was never "I don't want to". just "I am SO busy". Well, I discovered that I do have time and I have to make time and surprisingly, I now enjoy the time I spend exercising and I enjoy the rest of my day more too. It is because I feel good (love the endorphins from exercise) and I have enough energy to do what I want so I can do more in less time--if that makes sense.

I believe that success isn't measured by size or how much weight we lose or how fast, but in how we grow as a person and what changes we are making to ensure that we have a long, healthy life and that means for many of us, a lifestyle change.

WELL, I'M NOT TO MY GOAL WEIGHT, NOT EVEN CLOSE. BUT I DO FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN A NUMBER OF WAYS.

1'ST IS THAT I USED TO THINK PORTION SIZE AND AMOUNT OF SERVINGS WERE OF NO IMPORTANCE IN WEIGHT CONTROL, AND THAT I COULD EAT AS MUCH I PLEASED. AS I MATTER OF FACT, I BECAME QUITE BELLIGERENT WHEN LAUREN OR ANYONE ELSE WOULD TELL ME OTHERWISE. I DON'T DO THAT NOW. I KNOW AMOUNT HAS BEEN MOST OF MY PROBLEM.

2'ND IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE FIRST. IT'S THAT NOW I RECOGNIZE THAT I HAVE A WEIGHT PROBLEM. I KNOW, AT MY SIZE, THAT STATEMENT PROBABLY SOUNDS RIDICULOUS. BUT WHAT PEOPLE SEE REFLECTED BACK AT THEM WAS NOT WAS I SAW OR FELT. I PERCEIVED MYSELF IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT MANNER. DON'T ASK ME HOW, CAUSE I CAN'T TELL YOU. THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT WAS.

3'RD HAS BEEN THAT I'VE RECOGNIZED THE VALUE OF EXERCISING, AND HOW GOOD IT MAKES ME FEEL. I ALSO DON'T KNOW HOW I WENT SO MANY YEARS JUST TAKING UP SPACE, AND NOT MOVING FOR HOURS. I CAN'T TELL YOU THE AMOUNT OF PICTURES THAT FAMILY AND FRIENDS HAVE OF ME JUST SITTING, AND USUALLY, SLEEPING. I DO KNOW THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE IN MY LIFE MADE EXCUSES FOR ME, WHICH I LAPPED UP LIKE AN EAGER PUP, AND THAT FURTHER ALLOWED ME TO BLOCK OUT REALITY.

THE ONE AND ONLY PERSON IN MY LIFE THAT DIDN'T MAKE EXCUSES FOR MY BEHAVIOR WAS LAUREN. SHE'S TRIED UPTEEN MILLION TIMES AND WAYS TO GET ME TO SEE THE LIGHT, AND BECAUSE OF HER WEIGHT BATTLE, SHE USED HERSELF AS AN EXAMPLE, THINKING IT WOULD GET THROUGH TO ME EVENTUALLY.

THIS LAST TIME AROUND, AFTER I TRIPPED AND ACCIDENTLY "FOOTBALL STYLE" TACKLED HER KNEE AND THEN, TO BOOT, FELL ON IT, AND SHE WAS SO BADLY INJURED, SHE DIDN'T HAVE TO SAY ANYTHING ANYMORE. REALITY WAS IN THE DEGREE OF THE INJURY. IF I'D BEEN A SMALL PERSON, HER KNEE WOULD'VE BEEN BRUISED, SHE'D HAVE GOTTEN UP, LAUGHED, BRUSHED THE DIRT OF HER PANTS LEG, AND WE WOULD'VE CONTINUED OUR WALK.

I HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE ALL MY WEIGHT IS GONE, BUT THE WAY I'M GOING NOW, I'M LEARNING THINGS I WOULDN'T LET MYSELF LEARN BEFORE, SO I'M ALREADY SUCCESSFULL.

We are all working really hard to meet our goals and we all have different ideas about what our goals are and what a success is. Let's celebrate them by posting them here. It doesn't matter what it is, if you feel it is good and are proud, post it here so we can all celebrate it with you!
