Passing on a message from one our SparkPeople coaches to you all.

Did you lose weight with a SparkFriend or a SparkTeam?

Then we want your story! If you lost weight with the help and support of a close-knit SparkFriend or small group within a SparkTeam, your story could be featured in a national women's magazine—and help Spread the Spark!

We're looking for interesting stories of women who met online at SparkPeople, became good friends and support buddies, and reach their goal weights together. The ideal story will involve SparkFriends who met online but have ALSO met up offline at least once. Supportive friendships through SparkTeams that meet this criteria will also be considered.

We're on a tight deadline to pitch these stories to magazine editors, so if you think you qualify, please reply to this post with the following brief information:

Hi Everyone!

Recently we've had a number of issues with members posting copyrighted information- primarily in their blogs. The original authors have been contacting us, asking that their work be removed, or properly cited, or in some instances they want to be paid for the fact that someone else is using it.

I'm asking that you pass along this reminder to your teams:

If you are going to post something on the boards or in your blog that someone else has written, you need to credit the source. Our policy is that you can post a few sentences and then you need to link to the source so that people can read the rest of it. You should not be posting an entire article, for instance, and if you are going to post something you always need to cite it.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and for spreading the word about this to your teams!!

I am posting this one because there have been some questions about tracking fitness. This is a pretty cool feature. This was posted originally in September on sparkguys blog.

Hi everyone!

Our programmers have been working hard to improve the SparkPeople Fitness Tracker. We launched several new updates to the Fitness Tracker today, which you can see and use by selecting the "my Fitness" tab under "My Tools" or by clicking here. Many of these new enhancements were ideas and requests from our members!

Here's a rundown of what's new (and how to use it):

Step Tracker. Many people who use pedometers wanted a quick and easy way to track their steps. This new, optional tracker has to be "turned on" if you want to use it. To add it to your Fitness Tracker, go to my Fitness (your Fitness Tracker). Click the "Change Fitness Goals" button near the top of the page. On that page, click the "Setup" next to the Step Tracker. Set your daily goal, make sure it's checked off (to show up on your tracker) and "Save Your Changes."

Mileage Tracker. Many walkers and runners have requested an easy way to track their mileage. This new tracker is also optional for those who want to use it. You can enter minutes and distance to calculate your pace and also keep track of how far you go over time. To add it to your Fitness Tracker, go to my Fitness (your Fitness Tracker). Click the "Change Fitness Goals" button near the top of the page. On that page, click the "Setup" next to the Mileage Tracker. Set a weekly goal, make sure it's checked off (to show up on your tracker) and "Save Your Changes."

More strength-training options. If you were following SparkPeople's workout plans before, your only option was a full-body workout. Now, you can customize your workouts by choosing from full body, upper body, lower body, or core workouts. To add it to your Fitness Tracker, go to my Fitness (your Fitness Tracker). Click the "Change Fitness Goals" button near the top of the page. On that page, scroll down to Strength Training Setup. Select the top button (that you want SparkPeople to design a workout plan for you), then create your own strength-training schedule using the options below. Be sure to "Save Your Changes" when finished.

"Swap" workouts AND exercises. If you're following SparkPeople's workout plans, you now have the ability to "swap" workouts—just like you can swap foods in your meal plans. When you're ready for a new strength-training workout, simply click the "Swap workout" button near the top/right of your workout that day. If you want to swap a single exercise for another, click on the exercise you don't want to choose another.

Customized Workout Names. If you're creating and following your own strength-training workouts, you can now set up your page with more customization. Now you have the ability to name exercise days to correspond to your fitness plan. To add it to your Fitness Tracker, go to my Fitness (your Fitness Tracker). Click the "Change Fitness Goals" button near the top of the page. On that page, scroll down to the Strength Training Setup. Select the second option (to create and track your own workouts). Next to each day of the week, you can "name" your workout as a reminder. Mondays could be “Back and Biceps Day,” Tuesdays might be “Lower Body" and so on. Click "Save Your Changes" and then your workout "names" will show up on the correct day of the week as a reminder—and for easy tracking.

These updates should make your fitness tracking (and workouts) easier to follow, but like any changes, sometimes it takes some time to get used to. If you have any questions about using this new Fitness Tracking page, please post a message on the Site/Technical Help message boards for help. We hope you enjoy these new upgrades to your free Fitness Tracker!

"You probably know already that you can delete multiple foods from your Nutrition Tracker. Earlier this week, we added the same functionality to the Fitness Tracker so you can delete multiple strength-training exercises from your plan/tracker. While you've always had the ability to remove a single exercise at a time, this new update will allow members to delete several exercises more easily. (Please note that the ability to delete multiple exercises, explained below, only works for members who are using the SparkPeople-generated workout plans.)

To delete multiple exercises from your workout tracker, go to your Fitness Tracker page. Scroll to the bottom of the page and locate the button that says "Remove Multiple Strength Exercises" (near the right side of the page). Click that button to open a pop-up. Select any/all of the exercises you want to remove today and then click the "Removed Checked Exercises" button. This will remove the exercises you do not want from you plan/tracker for that day.

THis is another enhancement. I cut and pasted the message from a sparkcoach for all to read. You can check out the blog and read it for yourself at the link at the bottom of this message. I tried to put it up here, but apparently I am "computer challenged".

Hi everyone!

We wanted to let you know that we've added 30 new demos to our expansive exercise library! Most of these feature an inflatable balance board, which is an inexpensive and versatile fitness product that we also sell in our SparkPeople Store. For those of you who purchased it already, and those who thought about it but weren't sure how to use it, you can refer to these demos for ideas. If you have a different balance board at home or at the gym, you can still follow the majority of these exercises!

You'll find most of these exercises in the core (abs) exercises section, but you can also use a balance board for lower body exercises (such as lunges) and upper body exercises (like several versions of pushups). We hope you like what you see—including our new male "model," Tim—a long-time SparkPeople employee!

To easily brose through all of the balance board exercises, just search at the top of the site for "balance board exercise" and you'll find the entire list!

We've also added a few demos using an ab wheel (here's an example), which you'll find in the Core Exercise Demos section, too. This is a common piece of equipment that many people have at home and at the gym.

Coming soon, our experts are going to create full workouts using these new balance board demos. We also have more exercise demos using other pieces of small equipment, such as medicine balls and foam rollers coming your way very soon!

We launched a few tweaks to SparkMail today:
1) You can now save "Drafts" of SparkMail messages. When composing or replying to a message you will now see a button to save your Draft, and you also have a Drafts folder in your list of folders.
2) An overall visual redesign, making the buttons and links easier to find and use.

We hope you like these enhancements, we know that many members find SparkMail a great way to support one another!

Reset SparkPoints on Articles You've Read

Some of our "super SparkPoints earners" (you know who you are!) have been running out of articles to earn SparkPoints for lately. We hear you! So, in an effort to let our loyal members continue to earn their daily allotment of SparkPoints for reading articles, you can now reset the articles you’ve read more than 6 months ago—so that you can earn Points by rereading them! To reset your article SparkPoints:

Click on the Account/Email Preferences link on your Start page (under the My Tools tab). Scroll down to the section titled "Reset Articles" and click the "Reset Articles" button and voila! You can now read the articles again and get more Points. Resetting your articles will keep the SparkPoints you earn for previously reading articles. You will lose the next to any articles in the Resource Center that have been reset.

PLEASE NOTE that this will only allow you to re-read articles you read more than 6 months ago; articles you have read less than six months ago will not be reset. Also noteworthy, you must be a member of SparkPeople for at least 6 months for the Reset Articles section to show up on your account preferences page.


New Stay On Track Calendar
We've also added a monthly Stay On Track Calendar to the site, which gives you an easy-to-read, monthly view of what's coming up in your program (scheduled workouts and appointments) and what you've tracked (food, workouts, notes and earned SparkPoints) each day. This calendar is interactive and printable, too!. To see your Stay on Track Calendar, go to the Reports section (under the "My Tools" tab). Scroll down to the "Weight and Other Reports" section to find your Stay on Track Calendar.

CHANGES ON OUR SPARK PAGE

We wanted to let you know about a new and improved SparkPage design that we launched today. SparkPages hold so much information that we wanted to make it easier to navigate a person's SparkPage and find exactly what you're looking for. The overall design is the same, but we've cleaned up the look of SparkPages and added some great new functionality, too. Here are some of the highlights of this redesign:


Tabs across the top of each Page, which allow you to easily view a member's photos, friend feed, blog posts, and more. For example, if you're looking at someone's photos, you can quickly get to their SparkTeams, too.


NEW Photo Pagination. When viewing a photo in someone's gallery, you'll now see links below it that say "Previous Image" and "Next Image" that allow you to scroll through the photos as if viewing them in a slideshow.


NEW Comments on Photos. Members can now comment directly on each other's photos. When someone comments on your photo, you will receive an email letting you know.


NEW Awards Page. Everyone has a tab at the top of their page called "Awards." This is where you'll find a member's SparkGoodies, SparkStreaks and SparkPoints trophies. We plan to add more options for special icons and awards to this section soon.


More SparkFavorites. You'll find favorites under the "More" tab at the top of each Page. Now, your Favorites section includes SparkRecipes you're rated and saved as favorites in addition to your favorite articles, message boards and shared recipes.


NEW Alert on Updated Intros. To clean up the page, we've shortened the amount of introductory text that shows, but you can still type as much as you'd like. Visitors can click on the "Read More" link to see your entire introduction. If you have updated your introductory text within the past 30 days, a note will show up there, letting visitors to your page know that they should "Read More" to see what's new.


At first glance, SparkPages look pretty much the same as before, but there are lots of improvements that came with this new design. Good morning, SparkPeople!

We're excited to launch a fun new feature today called SparkPeople Trivia !

You'll find it in the Wellness section of the site, as well as the Healthy Lifestyle Home tab and your SparkPoints page . Basically, when you choose to play our trivia game each day, you'll receive a random assortment of multiple-choice health, fitness and nutrition questions. You can take as many tries as you need to correctly answer 3 questions each day. Once you answer 3 questions correctly, the game is over (until tomorrow) and you'll earn 3 SparkPoints!

Plus, you can choose to place yourself on our trivia Leaderboards to see how your overall score ranks with other members. It's a fun way to learn more about living a healthy lifestyle!

SparkPeople is kicking off summer with our Spread the Spark Summer Challenge and it all kicks off with the official "Show Your Spark" Weekend, Friday, June 26, 2009, to Sunday, June 28, 2009. During this weekend, SparkPeople members across the globe will wear their SparkPeople Gear and/or gather at SparkRallies . (Visit your local SparkTeam page to help plan or RSVP to attend a local SparkRally in your area!) Even if you don't attend a Rally, you can still wear your gear wherever you go--and be on the lookout for other SparkPeople members doing the same!



We want everyone wearing SparkPeople gear that weekend to take photos of themselves and their SparkFriends to share with us. By wearing your gear, taking photos, and sharing your pictures with us, you could win fun SparkPeople prizes and even an iPod touch in our Show Your Spark Giveaway. Here's how.



1. Wear your SparkPeople gear the weekend of June 26, 2009. (If you do not have SparkPeople gear, you can purchase it at our SparkPeople Store .)



2. Start or sign up to attend a SparkRally near you. Don't forget to remind other members to wear their SparkPeople gear to the Rally, too.



3. Join the Spread The Spark Summer Challenge SparkTeam. Here, members can post fun and healthy summer activities, share information about SparkRallies, and post their photos all summer long.



4. Take photos of yourself and your friends at SparkRallies and events that weekend!



5. Upload your photos to the Team page so others can see how much fun you had. To upload a photo to the Team page, click on the red "Photos" tab (above the Team message boards) and follow the instructions there. Or add your photo(s) to your SparkPage or SparkPeople blog to share with your friends! Our staff will look at all of your photos and may feature your photos or story in future articles, emails or dailySpark posts!



6. Win prizes in our giveaway! To show our appreciation, and to encourage everyone to participate in the official Show Your Spark Weekend, we'll be giving away SparkPeople prizes and even an iPod touch! We will periodically select winners at random, from all members who join the Team and share their photos. We will post the winners in the Spread the Spark Summer Challenge Team and announce the iPod touch winner on July 10, 2009
