I just registered for a marathon for next year. It's a brand new marathon in Lexington, KY. I was the 3rd person registered. Yay!

Good Morning!

Another Spring like day ahead. After that, more of winter temps. I really need to focus on other things besides running. I need to give my knee a break (after today that is) I have a 5 mile race in a couple of weeks and then nothing else until June. (unless I change my mind and do some 5k's in May.) I should be focusing on my swimming right now. Bike will be picked up tomorrow! No shopping instead this time!

Have a great day!

Swim sprints today. I've discovered good form actually is faster than flailing. Mwahaha. I need to apply that to my running.

Jean-I will try that and see if it helps.

It's snowing this morning. Not much in the way of accumulation, but it's still the white stuff and we're sick of the white stuff!

After an ok run yesterday, I think I'll just get out and walk this morning. So far it's not blustery as forecast so I'm good.

Sunshine tomorrow and mid 40's!

Thanks everyone! I will check all these out. When I went out to the Grmin site yesterday to pull up my workout, I had to download a newer version. Not sure if that will help yet. got a response from Garmin yesterday and there isn't any maintenance going on so it may not be their issue.

4 miles ran yesterday in January weather. Snow flurries and windy and cold. It was tough. I get frustrated cuz I feel like this distances should be nothing for me yet i get out there and struggle. I went thru this last year, but I had health issues then. Not sure what my problem is this year. Maybe it's just burnout from the crappy winter we've had! emoticon

40's today and rain this afternoon followed by snow tonight. I'm headed down to the lake today for a run and will do cross training this afternoon. I chose shopping over picking up my bike on Sat. so I really should get today so I've got it to use. Just so boring going on the trainer.

Complain, complain!

Have a nice Tues. everyone!

GARMIN EXPRESS: Somehow it is the new interface for Garmin Connect. I'm not sure how it is supposed to work.....'cause, well, it doesn't.

I had the system is down message for a week or so - several months ago. It wasn't Garmin at all, it was my computer. I had to delete all the cache and maybe do something with the browser. I wish I remembered all the steps. Maybe you can google the exact words and get a step by step repair. BTW: I use Google Chrome also.

****

Did some ST yesterday. I know what I am doing is working because after 15 or 20 minutes my muscles are shaking. Part of the workout is burpees. I think if I were videoed doing these - everyone would be in hysterics. I don't think of myself as weak, but when I do these or mountain climbers I realize how weak I really am.

BECKYANNE1 - I've noticed that maintenance message on the dashboard for Garmin connect. Played with it a bit just now. It looks like Firefox on the Win7 box caches the down for maintenance message, so I keep seeing it after the problem is fixed. Apparently I need to refresh or use the bookmark I have (bookmark is the same URL, plus ?cid=(my user number), so the browser actually loads that.

Seems to be a bit flaky as a web site, but I have a backup with the Garmin Connect app on the iPhone.

Checking in. Had my own personal spin session at the Y. My own bike is still at the bike guy getting tweaks done to it. I should have it back by this weekend. I worked hard on the spin bike tonight. I was pretty happy with it.

The weather is crazy. Snow/ice this morning, gave way to lovely afternoon in the mid-40s.

Jean-Garmin Express? I've been having problems with my Garmin too. Everytime I download my workout and try and look at the dashboard, it tells me it's down for maintenance. I sent Garmin an email about it but havent gotten a response. I know they're updating things but the 410 wasn't ready yet. Frustrating!

The weather man is very sneaky! The forecast changed overnight to snow today! emoticon This is the one thing I hate about Spring! The yo-yo forecasts! After a busy day yesterday, I got out for a walk last night. I'mhoping for a run today, but they are talking blowing and drifting snow. Not exactly something I like running in. The funny thing is, tomorrow it's suppose to be in the mid 40's and rain!

I can swim and it's not pretty either. I've yet to get in a pool and start swimming for my upcoming Tri. I'm targeting April for that. Plus I'm hoping that I'll be able to get out on my bike.

Happy St Patrick's Day everyone! emoticon

If I come over, will you teach me how to actually swim?

I can swim back and forth in a pool, but it is not pretty.

Jean, how exciting about your new baby! It doesn't really matter how the baby is delivered, as long as the delivery goes smoothly and everything turns out alright :-)

I took two of the grandkids swimming yesterday, trying to teach them how to actually swim. It went well for their first time being serious in a pool. I'll take them back again next Sunday.

emoticon Good Morning!

KEVIN: Hurray for stats. I am struggling with the new Garmin express upload on my computer for my 410. I just can't seem to get it to work.

JERI: What a good mom you are!!! You will do great at your next HM!!

LBELLOS: emoticon

Hi BECKY!

Weather: I cannot believe how cold it continues to be in the north. Spring will surely be greatly appreciated this year. Don't throw anything at me...., but the weather here (in the flip flop wearing world) has been gorgeous.

*****

Had a good 10K run yesterday. Mostly an easy run, but I did run faster for awhile in the middle. I think the daily calf stretch and rolling is helping (at least I hope it is). Although I usually only do the stretch 2-3xs per day rather than 10.

Talked to my daughter yesterday.... she sounded very good. Her doctor said the baby is not ready to make an appearance for another 2-3 weeks. Because she is 41 and this is her first child he also said she may have to have the baby by Cesarean. They do an ultrasound nearly every week. I guess because she is an older mom.

Surprise, surprise.... DH and I came in 1st last night playing duplicate bridge. That has not happened in a long, long time.

Jeri - I'm happy for you being able to run with your daughter. That has to be a lot more satisfying that setting a PR in a race, and of course there will be other opportunities for PRs.

Today I set out to run an easy 5 miles. Targeted a pace of 8:00 per mile, and came close by watching the new Garmin. Average pace of 7:58, with mile splits ranging from 7:51 to 8:03, and a slower 8:29 pace for the extra 0.17 mile.

Had beautiful January weather, 17° F with 9 mph W wind and sunshine. Most importantly, the roads and shoulders were clear and I could run in road shoes.

So far in March, I've seen 2 gorgeous spring days, one okay spring day, one day of blizzard, and 12 days of good January weather. Spring is just around the corner, or so it is rumored.

Rest day yesterday.

Today some sort of run this afternoon. Sundays are usually my long run days, but I've put those on hold until knee issues are better.

Checking in. I just got home from my 10 miler. What a fun race!! I was going to actually race for speed, but instead I ran with my daughter. She's been having knee issues for about a year, and New Year's Day was her longest run lately (5 miles). She's run a total of about 15 miles since New Year's Day. She was afraid she would do awful today. I stayed with her, because I know she is an awesome runner and could pull off a 10 miler at a not-so-horrible pace, even with a sore knee and no training. Her pace wasn't bad. Mile 5 kinda stunk, and I'm not sure why. Then she got good again. Our pace was about a minute per mile slower than what I would have run if I were not running with her today. Finally at 8.83 she told me to go on. I dropped my pace and ran in, coming in about 3 minutes before she did. I was very proud of the way she pulled out a 10 mile run from nothing. Plus, I felt really, really strong, and I feel like I could run 10 more miles right now. I know I've got a really good 10K in me, and a really good HM in me. Today I felt as if I could have easily set a PR. Everything about the race was perfect. Since I used it as a training run, I know the Flying Pig HM is going to be awesome!

She woke up one morning and threw away all her excuses...

My new Garmin Forerunner 620 reported 10.91 miles for the nominal 11 miles with the 8:30 pace group this morning. It was cloudy and 39° F with SSW wind 17 mph, but that felt comfortable after running all winter in colder weather.

The route started and ended at the Blue Cross Arena, where Johnny's Runnin' of the Green was set to start at 9 AM. I did not run Johnny's because it did not seem wise to run 5 miles at race pace on a foot and ankle that are almost back to normal. Next race is in two weeks.

Even though I'm new to the interface, running the Garmin was much easier than running an iPhone app for the run. Afterwards, I synced to the GarminConnect app on the iPhone. Oh, my! I get a lot of stats that RunKeeper didn't give me. It's going to be Garmin all the way for tracking runs now. And I'll be able to time laps on Tempo Thursday, so I can start to get a baseline of where I am in speed work.

Hi team....

MOBYCARP: I missed it.... which Garmin did you get?

Hi Becky and Jeri!!!

*****

The capital a no longer works on my keyboard.... I think it is time for a new one. Many of the letters on the keyboard have worn away.

****

Supposed to run today..., but am skipping my 3rd run this week. Will start back on my cardio schedule on Monday.

****

Short trip....

I woke up at 2:30 and could not go back to sleep so only 4 1/2 hours of sleep before we left.

We packed and left early on Wednesday morning and drove to a place called Sanibel Island. Our MI RV friends were staying there and invited us down. We spent 2 nights with them in their RV. anyway.... Wednesday we packed all the beach stuff (chairs; umbrella; cabana; lunch) on our bikes and rode to the beach. We spent about 2 hours their; ate lunch; and rode back to their RV. Then we had a beer. after that we rode to the island's lighthouse; photos; etc. Rode back. More beer. ate dinner. Played cards.

Sanibel island is very, very busy. Lots and lots of traffic - but bike trails everywhere and a huge amount of touristy bikers.

Wednesday night.... slept terrible. I was on the couch. I must have woken up 10 times and never slept soundly at all.

Thursday early (about 10:30) we left and biked a total of maybe 16 miles or so. It took us 5 hours. We again packed a lunch and took it with us. We biked to the island's national wildlife refuge. It had a 4 mile paved road (one-way) through the refuge. We biked and stopped and biked and stopped. Took a lot of photos. I had a very small camera with me without a significant zoom at all. Saw some birds I did not see or post in my photo blog the other day. after leaving the refuge we biked to a picnic area and had lunch. Then biked home. We got cleaned up- more beer - then went out for dinner.

Thursday night I did sleep better but not well.

We left early Friday and drove home. We did stop at the island's shell museum though on the way off the island.

****

Got weighed this morning.... ho hum.....back to very healthy habits today. I am not running today - 'cause I've felt so exhausted recently.

****

Today's plan.....
Do one thing at a time on my long list of "to-do." Go to an art festival this afternoon.

I love my Garmin even if I'm just going out walking.

Today is a rest day for me. My bike is ready so I'll probably go and get it so I can get back to using the trainer. I've been trying to avoid indoor workouts lately because I'm getting burnt out. The fresh air perks me up!

Have a nice Sat.!

My legs felt heavy on the stairs at work today after running hard for yesterday's tempo workout. I was dithering between taking an extra rest day today, or just doing a very easy 5K. Got home, and my new Garmin FR 620 had arrived. The time I might have spent running got sucked up in the learning curve.

I did get an easy third of a mile in to test starting and stopping the watch in time with RunKeeper on the iPhone. They were consistent, but more details available from the Garmin. I've only figured out the most basic function so far, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to like the Garmin a lot.

Next test: looking at pace on tomorrow's 11 easy miles.

We have missed all of the snow so far. More is in the forecast for next week. Hopefully we'll miss most of that too! DH and I took a nice walk last night when I got home from work. The temps are really mild this morning so I'm planning a short run before the wind picks up and makes it feel colder than it is. Rec'd an email that my bike was ready so we will go and pick it up tomorrow.

Have a nice day!

A new Garmin is better than Christmas :-)

Speaking of new stuff, I ordered some Shamrock socks for tomorrow's 10 mile race, and they still have not arrived. I ordered on March 3rd. They sent an e-mail saying they were backordered, but I would still get them on time. Monday (the 10th) they sent an e-mail saying they had shipped with 2 day priority shipping. I e-mailed them yesterday because the tracking label said they were in New Jersey. I am not going to have my socks on time. The customer service people are trying to take care of it and treat me right, but I will be surprised if I get my socks before tomorrow's race.

She woke up one morning and threw away all her excuses...

17° F with 20 mph W wind for Tempo Thursday. They wanted us to do 4 x 800 m with 60 seconds recovery. That's beyond RunKeeper to time, so I treated a Boston Marathon trainee with a Garmin like a pace leader. He led us on a 6:30 pace for the tempo part, pretty steady. That helped me keep steady in spite of feeling like passing him part of the time and not feeling like running as hard as he was running part of the time.

My Garmin should arrive tomorrow or Monday. I might even learn how to use it before next Tempo Thursday.

Had a blizzard yesterday. Today it's too cold for the road salt to work, but sunny and otherwise a pretty nice day for mid-January. Tempo Thursday this evening, will see how it goes.

We're supposed to get some more spring weather tomorrow and Saturday, before returning to more seasonable January weather for Sunday and Monday.

It's a beautiful day, but cold again. It's hopefully winter's last blast. I'll be running this evening, maybe at my daughter's house. Nothing far or fast. This is an easy week.

Jeri-your social hotspot is kind of creepy! emoticon Our cemeteries though are great places to run especially for the hills.

We had upper 30's yesterday and 20's today, but no snow! emoticon

Knee still hurts so I will do more of a walk/jog today. Most likely it will be more walking. Not ready to go see a Dr. yet to get it properly diagnosed, but I'm afraid that time will come.

I had a nice 3 mile easy run in the cemetery this evening after work. It was 73°, and everyone was in the cemetery walking or running. My husband was there riding his bike. In our town, the cemetery is the social hotspot. Tomorrow it's going to snow, with windchills below zero. Aah, March in Kentucky. So fun to play the "What's the weather today" game.

55° F at noon today, but not enough time on lunch to run 7 miles. When I went out at 5, it was 53°, and it was 51° when I got back 7.24 miles later.

I'll miss this tomorrow when I'm dealing with the classic white cross-training equipment. I'll miss it on Tempo Thursday, when the evening temperature may be down to single digits.

I did nothing yesterday. I brought my running clothes with me to work, and I was going to try to run at lunch. But I forgot the other office girl is at the dentist this morning, and it's a beautiful day. She said yesterday that she may end up "sick" all day today. And that's fine with me. I'll run after work.

emoticon Jeri!

Ran 6.2 miles yesterday. Temps. in the 50's! It was a bit windy and alot of little lakes to run around. Knee last night was sore and stiff.

Easier today. No running! Plus I will be standing for 6 hrs tonight anyway.

Have a great day!

Oh gosh. I have not been keeping up. Saturday was super busy, and ended with hosting a birthday part for my niece's 4 yr old son. That was tons of fun. She threw the party, but it was at our house. She had sack races. It was a great time, really. Hahaha And yesterday I did my first tri. It was an indoor tri, and basically just for training purposes. I found out I am NOT the world's slowest triathlete. I wrote a blog about it on my page.

This is a rest week (light exercise). Saturday is a 10 miler that I want to do well on. Very excited about it!

Low 40's yesterday, but it didn't feel that warm. Stronger cold wind to deal with. I managed 3.6 miles but it was tough. My fault. I started out way too fast. My knee felt pretty good. Not so much afterwards though. It bothers me when I rest. This morning it's a little stiff. Almost 50 today with sunshine so I plan on getting out for a run today too. I will take it slower this time. My plan is to run Sun., Mon., Wed., and Fri. this week. Tues and Thurs will be some sort of cross training and Sat. is my rest day.

Got 32° and sunny, with W wind 15 mph today. Sunny makes a big difference in how it feels.

The plan is to reshuffle the training days from the plan. Today I ran Tuesday's 5 miles, Tuesday I'll run Wednesday's 7, Wednesday will be rest day because of my schedule, and Friday I'll run today's 4 miles. The idea is to put the shortest run on Friday, which is the both the day before the long run and the day I'm most likely to miss running from Life Happening.

The plan calls for Monday and Friday as rest days. Coach's first choice if Wednesday has to be a rest day was to make it up on Monday, to keep the Friday rest before the long run. Running Mondays hasn't been working out lately, so I'm adjusting the best I can for a five day schedule.

The turned ankle is almost back to normal. The legacy foot injury on the same side is still there, but has a familiar rehab feeling to it. I'll only be doing easy runs 4 days a week, and I might not run hard on Tempo Thursday. Depends on how the foot is doing.

Kevin-those are some big feet! My youngest wears an 11 1/2-12 and I thought those were big!

Back to it today! My knee is feeling pretty good. I've had 2 nights of pain free sleep so now I will ruin that by starting my running again! (hopefully not) Temps should get into the 40's today and tomorrow followed by a day of rain/sleet and then warmer temps again thru the weekend. I have a very light work schedule this week which will not interfere with my running at all.

Have a great Sunday even though your minus 1 hr of sleep!

36° F for this morning's "long" run with the 8:30 pace group, and having clear roads after yesterday's thaw was a luxury. I was assigned 7 miles, but the rest of the group are training for a full marathon and were assigned 14 or 15 miles. We were going to split about 6.4 miles anyway, so I just ran solo after the water stop at 5.6 miles. Ended up running the last part of the route a little faster (8:14 pace on mile 7), but it was pleasant.

This puts the mileage on my road shoes up around 370, and they aren't feeling as comfy as they were; so I ordered new shoes. The joy of being a size 14 is that what's in stock doesn't usually include the best shoes for me.

No exercise yesterday meant a pain free evening and my knee if feeling so much better today. Have decided to wait till tomorrow and start my week off on my normal schedule. I'm taking my bikein to the shop today for a tune up and get the gears fixed. Hopefully we'll be able to get out and ride soon. Weather is looking nice for the upcoming week.

IRONSTRENGTH for runners....

www.runnersworld.com/workouts/ironst
re
ngth-workout

I did a portion of this workout the other day (modified nearly everything I did) and was still surprisingly sore after. It tells me that working on the machines at the Y twice a week for many months was not as hard on my muscles as this workout. I think I will try to do a portion of this workout several times a week. Hopefully there will come a time when this body is stronger.

I did run yesterday.... 5.5 miles at an easy pace. Will just continue to monitor any aches and pains and adjust. No arch pain, just some other leg issues. Will also stretch and roll all those calf muscles. (NOTE: My HR monitor is not working (this is the 3rd or 4th strap Garmin has sent to me).

On today's exercise agenda....
Some ST (part of Iron Strength workout)
Biking

On today's non-exercise agenda
I am almost done with a baby quilt and must still sew the binding around the edge. Will spend some time on this today.

Finally got some spring weather today. I ran into the sunset at 47° F, and got home in the dusk at 40°. In 20-20 hindsight, I should have worn my light gloves instead of having bare hands; but it was good to be able to run in shorts and a tee for the first time this year.

Did Tuesday's 5 easy miles, since I did Wednesday's 7 on Tuesday and took today's rest day on Wednesday. Tomorrow's "long" run is only 7 miles, so I think I'm okay rearranging the days like this.

Lots of good thoughts and experiences shared!!! Thanks....

The podiatrist I saw used to work with many different types of athletes in the service. He also has - sport's medicine for the foot listed as one of the many areas he can address. I think he understands running and sport's (both desires and injuries) to give a decent assessment of where I am.

My ego doesn't want to admit this body is aging, but, in reality, it is. Dog gone it. I want to run for as long as I can so lower volume and shorter long distances will be okay for now. Injury free is very important.

After the pain during/after my last long run, I thought for sure he would tell me I had a stress fracture. I am glad that was not it.

Good Morning!

It's finally Friday and the temp is 30 already! It looks like our extreme temps are gone for at least the next week. Could see 50 on Monday! Now I can't complain about it being too cold to go outside and although there will be many puddles (some deep) I can deal with that. I will just make sure to wear my old shoes when I go out.

I would love to do a long distance race, but right now my knee says don't even think of it. I'll plug along with the 5k and 10k distance and work up to a HM in the fall. We'll see how my first Triathlon goes to see if more of those are in my future. My wetsuit came in the mail yesterday. I haven't tried it on yet. Just trying to get used to the fact of wearing me wearing one.

Have a great Friday everyone!

My doctor has also told me to cut out the long distances. I generally don't listen to doctors because most of them don't understand running. And they don't understand rheumatoid arthritis. However... the doctor who told me to cut out the long distances is my rheumatologist, and she's also a professional triathlete (she's an Ironman, and a super speedy one). Her HM time is between 1:15-1:20. I have seen her run an extremely hilly HM pushing her toddlers in a double stroller and come in first woman! She totally understands my arthritis issues (lupus overlap), and she totally understands running. My arthritis issues are doing well right now, so I am back to distance running. I am only planning to do one more full marathon (this November, the Monumental), but I don't ever plan to give up HM distance if I can help it. My pain w/arthritis issues has forced me to branch out into swimming and cycling. It is the reason I am now doing triathlons (first one this Sunday). I have to run less in order to run the rest of my life.

She woke up one morning and threw away all her excuses...

SEABREEZE64: I wish I had a doctor give me advice that specific! So far, all the health professionals say I have to figure it out by listening to my body, i.e. I find out what's too much by making mistakes.

If a doctor I could trust told me the price of being able to run pain free was to only run 4 to 7 miles 3 to 4 days a week, and never try to run a half, I'd go for it. Not doing the distance would hurt my pride a bit at first, but sitting out injured is no fun at all.

As it happens, I don't face that particular choice right now. The sore foot/ankle is as good this morning after last night's half-fast intervals as it was yesterday morning after Wednesday's rest day. I think I'll be able to get through the half, if I adjust training properly. I'm beginning to think in terms of the Rochester Marathon in September, but before I commit I need to get through the Flower City Challenge half on April 27.

Good Morning......

****

Doctor's appt.

He said:

...There is nothing seriously wrong with my feet except that the muscles in my legs that attach to the tendons and thus the arches are very tight and should be stretched. He showed me 1 exercise to do for 30-60 seconds 10 times a day for the rest of my life (his words).
...I should stop running HMs and stick to 10Ks and 5Ks. My feet are just wearing out because I am older.
....My feet can wear neutral or stable shoes and so just pick out whatever is comfortable. And ALWAYS wear an insert in the shoe like Superfeet or Spenco (although the 2nd won't last as long because they are not made as well).

For the most part.... I will follow his suggestions... having no arch pain would be very nice!!! I am not sure I will "never" run a HM though.

Yesterday I did part of the Ironstrength workout. I can tell I have been very lax about ST cause today I am sore.

Will go out and run easy today....and stretch 10 times today.

DH and I are going to the $2.00 theatre today to see the second Hunger Games movie. Then I hope to stop at the small brewing store to see what they have to say.
