I also count when things are rough. Every time my left foot hits the ground, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4...

I do the "to the next tree, the next crack in the sidewalk, to the next shadow" thing.

Annnndddd.... TBH I also yell at myself. I carry all my extra weight in my thighs. So, I will occasionally yell "Find the fuel in your thighs, Fatty!!!!"

Imperfection is important. If we were all perfect, then there would be no such thing as growth, and everyone would be extremely boring, which is, paradoxically, not that perfect.-- Dr. Matt

One...two...three...four...run for the Marine Corps...Semper Fi

I shouted this out to another runner on my 7 mile run Saturday. Going for 9 miles next Saturday in working toward an October half-marathon

One...two...three...four...run for the Marine Corps. Smell the freedom.

Going for the half-marathon...if there is a road, run it. If there is a hill, run up it. If there is a finish line, cross it. Train...run...finish.

Usually, mine is something like, "I can do anything for ___ minutes." Works well. Need it in the beginning and at the end of runs, especially the rough ones. Since it's hotter than the surface of the sun here with humidity factored in, a lot of the long runs have been a little rough lately.

Great topic, I really like some of yours and find it inspiring to read.

One of the things that I say to myself is "Power on. You can do this."

Also, I bounce around the "well I only have a 5k to go" or whatever the mileage is left that I know I have done this much before.

I hope to remember some of this when I run my big race.

Live your life as though you are obligated to make the world a better place. Make a difference today.

I ran a marathon a couple of weeks ago and I found that, spontaneously, around mile 22 when I thought I was going to die, I started repeating, "Every step, every mile; every step, every mile." It really helped to keep one foot in front of the other. I'm not much of a mantra person, but I totally got it in that moment.

For some reason I start counting when I am struggling. 1,2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. It helps me to find a pace I am comfortable with and before I know it I have covered quite a distance.

I am loving reading all of these responses! Little do all the people driving by know what us runners are thinking.

When I was a kid, I thought all the love songs that were directed to the unidentified "you" were actually meant for me. I was mightily embarrassed when I found out Peter Gabriel was not finding the light, the heat in my eyes. But now when I'm running, I once again imagine that all the love songs on my playlist are directed to me.

Not really a mantra, but it keeps me motivated. :)

During my long runs I say "you can do it" Or "you will get there faster if you keep running - stopping now will only make this take longer"

"your strong, and fit - you can do this"

Or "come-on you've done this before so you know you can do it again!"

I begin to recite my motto, my quote (below) from Francis of Assisi:

"Start by doing what is necessary ...."

If that doesn't do it, I got to the second part:

"... then do what is possible ..."

If I need a little more help I finish it off:

"... and suddenly you will be (doing the impossible) RUNNING A F---ING MARATHON!"

And if that doesn't fire me up, I go home.

Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible and suddenly you will be doing the impossible -- St Francis of Assisi

I use a true mantra, one I can pace to my foot falls.
"I can do this, yes I can".

This started on my very first 22 mile run in 2009. I was with 4 other women in my training group, and 2 were struggling to the point they wanted to quit and have the rest of us come get them with a car. The 5 of us started saying this out loud at mile 19, and it got them through the final 3 miles.

I don't know. I don't usually want to quit. If I'm not making my paces, I just do my best and think I will get it next time with better rest or better nutrition.

I did see a quote recently by Joan Benoit Samuelson that I liked, "My philosophy on running is, I don't dwell on it, I do it."

I just finished my 3 ultra, (34 miles) and I talked with God during this one. I know some might find that weird, but it was a very spiritual journey

I do the same as RunningVeganMom. Most exhaustion is all in our heads. I also try breaking it up - like OK, run to the end of this block, then to that tree, etc.

I sing showtunes. They start in mile 6, and again in mile 18. Also, my running slogan is, "Running is about fun and prettiness." If it's not fun, there's no point in doing it. Right? I will not do an ugly run. Dull and boring.

When I want to quit, I take inventory. I focus in on all aspects of my running. I check my form, if I'm having any true pain (body part by body part), then my breathing. By the time I do all that, I've passed my goal where I thought I was going to stop, and then I keep going because all checked out!

I tell myself that there is no physical reason why I can't keep going! I tell myself to push through it because the desire to stop is all in my head. That has seemed to do the trick for me so far!

Up until my last race, it was Find it and GO! I might need a new one to get back on track and train for my next race.

What do you tell yourself while you are running to get through a rough mile? (or a rough run altogether). Here are a couple of new ones for me:

"It hurts because you're doing it, the pain would stop if you stopped, but then you wouldn't be doing it. "- thought of this while holding goal pace during a recent half marathon

"Exhaustion is not a reason to stop. The only reason to stop is injury."
