I agree with Beckanne1. I pushed it too much after my surgery in 2008 and it delayed my healing. But it'd be great if you could find something you're allowed to do, such as swimming. I can cut back on all the calories I want, but if I'm not moving, I'm gaining.
Also, many people feel you have to eat to lose (or maintain). Could you do some strength training on your core or upper body? Adding a little muscle mass can also burn more calories.

I know exactly what you're going thru. I've had multiple surgeries in the last couple of years. Swimming is most likely, but what about walking? I was able to walk after all of my surgeries. My last major surgery I walked too far tough and ended up hurting. Now is also a good time to log your food and make sure you are staying within your calorie range. Either way, after that month, it is going to take a bit of time for you to get back to where you were. Surgery does a number on your body and you may find that you tire sooner, etc. Just listen to your body and don't push it.
Weight loss is mostly from the kitchen, not the gym or the street. So be extra careful with your intake of calories. But eat enough for the healing process to work. Don't skimp because you are worried about weight. Get well first and if a weight gain occurs, take care of it later. Getting well is most important.

It's really all about diet. I took a week off recently due to illness. I had to watch what I ate like a hawk, because you just can't eat that much when you are not active. My BMR is 1250 so many days I was just eating that, and I didn't gain any and in fact lost a little.
I would find out what your BMR is and calculate how much you burn while being sedentary (if you can't exercise at all) and just make sure you stay under that limit. Typically it is your BMR * 1.2.
Can you bike or swim? I'm currently injured, and am not allowed to bike or run, but I can swim. This has been a sucky year for me. It started in December with a hip flexor injury that kept me from running until mid-March. But I swam and cycled, and when I got back to running I didn't miss a beat. Now I have a fractured tibial plateau and internal derangement of the right knee (probably ACL tear, will know Tuesday). I haven't been able to run a ride a bike for two weeks. I can finally now walk (with a robo-brace to avoid accidental pivoting). I have no idea how long I'll be out of commission with this injury, but I am swimming 5 days a week for now. Plus, lots of core and upper body.

Hello All: I am recovering from a non running related surgery. I can not run for a month! I would like to hear any tips of how any of you have managed your weight or weight loss when "grounded" from exercise. I want to be as lean as possible for my fall marathon especially since I will be missing 1 month of training. Any thoughts, comments, or encouragement appreciated!
