I am tired of winter!!! And, truthfully, we didn't have much winter until now. I'm just not a fan of cold weather. I would not be able to live somewhere that got to -19 or -20 without the windchill.

This evening I'll be on the trainer for an easy 45 minutes. Practically a rest day!

Way to Go! We have the extreme temps. now. -19 without the wind chill. With wind chill it's -35 to -50.

Treadmill and trainer yesterday. Today I'm working all day so it will be my rest day.

Have a great day!

Yeah, Jeri, you have to grab those 53 days in January when they show up. I'm doing pretty well at 36 for my run this afternoon. It's just my 4.6 mile standard winter route, but that's okay. I ran long yesterday, but I got to run at a comfy 7 minute mile today instead of holding the pace slow for a long distance.

Right now we have tropical 53. It will drop 53 degrees by midnight, and will be at -7 sometime in the early morning hours. Brrrrr...

I went out for an 8 mile run, and was so pleased with it!! I was feeling lazy and didn't want to run today, especially after yesterday's speed work (6x800s). But I got my butt in gear and went to the cemetery. It's not flat in the cemetery, but it's peaceful. I like to run there. My last mile was over a minute faster than my first mile, and there was no walking. Yay!! This is the first time November 2012 that I've gone 8 miles with no walking. That's when I tore my hip flexor, and then later messed up my knee. I will be more than ready for an upcoming 10-miler in March.

It's a balmy 3 degrees outside this morning! Neg. teens for the wind chill. I've been challenged to get out and run this week by my niece. She told me if I ran and had proof, she'd get me one of the best donuts in town. (I can't turn that one down) So if the weather stays where it is right now, I will head out for just a couple of miles and then come back in and hit the trainer for the rest of my workout. I really do need to get outside and run even if it's just a mile. It does so much more for me than the treadmill does.

Monday will be an indoor activity for sure. Even I know it's crazy to get out in the -50 to -60 degree temps.!

Have a great Sunday and stay warm!

Yesterday evening I wimped out on a walk outdoors, came in and saw a temp of -7 F on my porch. Today was better; it was +7 when I hit the road to go to a group run, and they announced the temperature as 12 when we started. I think it warmed as we ran; it was 22 on my porch when I got back home. The run was mostly on packed snow, but by late afternoon the roads were mostly clear.

We need a team leader to change the forum to 2014. We can do it, but it won't stick (I don't think).

Today I did 6x800s on the treadmill. I was supposed to follow up with 4x400s, but I ran too hard on the 800s and wore myself out!! Tomorrow is 8+ miles.

I will take both of your weather. Our temps started out at 32 this morning and by tonight we're suppose to have teens below zero with windchills much colder. Our governor has closed all of the schools on Monday because our temps are suppose to be in the -25 range with windchills in the -60 to -70 range. I went to the grocery store last night and am prepared for the cold.

I managed to get out for a 6 mile run this morning. The temps were fine, but the wind was bitterly cold and there was a glaze of ice on parts of the path. I brought my yak traks just in case, but managed to stay on my feet without them.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Sat.

I missed my normal Thursday run yesterday. It snowed all day long. It was the first work day of the year, but even working at home the snow sucked up way too much of my time. That, and it's not safe to run on the roads during an active snow event; I might not have anywhere to get out of the way if I meet a snow plow in a bad location.

Today is a normal non-running day, and cold for here with temps in the single digits F. Hopefully there will be enough snow cleared from the roads so I can have my normal run on Saturday.

. . . and shouldn't this thread say "2014" by now?

We are supposed to get frigid temps on Monday. Today it was 4 degrees when I woke up. On Monday the high is predicted to be anywhere from -3 to +3, with lows of -7. I am really not a fan of winter. Kentucky is not supposed to be like this.

Way to go Jeri!

More extreme cold temps are on the way. My treadmill is going to get a workout this winter I'm afraid. We do have a quick warm up this weekend so I should be able to get out and enjoy at least 1 outside run. As long as I can get at least one outdoor run in a week, I'll be ok. Not great though.

Kevin, you will do well in that half!

I ran a 5 mile race yesterday. Looking back at 2013, I started the year with a bad hip flexor injury that started when I fell down during a 2012 16-mile mountain trail race. It had me down until about mid-March. Then I ran a 5K in May and totally screwed up my knee. I kept trying to run on it, and in early June I tried to run a marathon. At mile 8 I felt a pop in my screwed up knee. I hobbled to the half finish line, and then I went to the ER. My knee was so messed up -- torn meniscus and a fractured tibial plateau. I finally had surgery in late August. Six weeks later I hobbled through a HM, but it took me almost 3 hours. After that, I kept my mileage to very low, and I did no speed work. I started regular training finally in December (as regular as possible with holidays). So... my race yesterday was where I expected and wanted to be. I will only improve now in 2014. I was pleased with yesterday's race.

Happy New Year's Eve!

It's my last paid day off of the year, conveniently arriving on the last day of the year. Got out in 23 weather and very light snow (I'd say mist if it were liquid) and ran around the section to the west. It was a pleasant run, in seasonable weather, with traffic as light as would be expected on New Year's Eve day.

Looking forward, I'm aiming at a half marathon on April 27. I may or may not enter other organized races before then; I will be working 40 hours a week and doing 8 hours a week of volunteer work during tax season, so the administrative overhead of a race might not make it onto my priority list.

Distances . . . I've never run a half marathon. The furthest I've ever run at one time was about 10 miles, and my most recent long runs have been about 8 and a quarter miles. OTOH, a 5K feels too short for a race. My shorter recreational runs tend to be between 4 and 5 miles, taking me 30 to 35 minutes. The 10K I ran on Thanksgiving felt like a good distance.

Further out than tax season, I'm contemplating a 5K on May 17 because it's part of a 30K series (5K 5/17, 15K 10/18, 10K 11/27). Assuming someone at work organizes a company team, I'll run the 3.5 mile JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge in Rochester in late May. Depending on how the half marathon goes, I might want to try for either the Rochester Marathon or the associated half in September. At this point, that's more of a dream than a goal. And regardless of whether I do the full 30K series, I'll do the 10K on Thanksgiving that's part of that series.

2014 might be the year when I sort out just how much I want to do in the way of organized races, as opposed to just getting out and running 3 or 4 days a week.

Good Morning!

I noticed the diff. between the 10k I did this year and the 5k's I ran. The 10k felt so much easier. I like to do the 5k's because they seem to challenge me to push harder, but it's also time for me to step out of my comfort zone and start doing longer distances. My head will be clearer once I establish a good schedule again.

Have a wonderful New Year's Eve!

The 3K is more like a "How am I going to do this racing season?" sort of race. That's my gauge. Plus, it's super fun. Everything is green, and I wear a tutu. It's a very festive atmosphere. I chased the AG award 3 years, and always came in 4th. Then I took 1st place in AG, then a 3rd place in AG. It's just plain fun. However... I was talking to my daughter about how I really hate 5Ks because they are fast and hard. I don't really like all-out efforts for the 5K distance. 3K is okay, because by the time you feel like puking, you're done, and sometimes I feel the need to really, really push myself like that. I don't think I'll be doing a lot of short races this year. I really am having a difficult time with this decision, and I want to register today before the rates go up on either race.

I would think that for someone who can run a 10 miler, a 3K would hardly be long enough to be worth the administrative effort. You might run further than 3K in warmups. BWDIK? You just have to pick the race that you think will be more satisfying to you, regardless of what I think might make sense.

I love signing up for races early. Prices will go up the beginning of the year. I've been debating a 3K (very fast, and I know I can get an AG award) or a 10 miler on March 15th. I run the 3K every year. This past year was the first year for the 10 miler, and I missed it due to recovery from hip flexor. For some reason they scheduled this one for the same day as the 3K. Both are very popular races. I know I won't get an AG award at the 10 miler. Now I'm still recovering from all my knee issues and my August surgery. I'm so torn. I really love the 3K, but I really want to run the 10 miler. Decisions, decisions...

I would take the rain and milder temps now. It is -17 this morning. Colder if you include the wind chill. Most of the week is going to be like this unfortunately. I had so many things to get done yesterday that a workout got put on the bottom of the list and didn't get done. I was pretty grumpy. I usually put my workouts first, but I haven't mastered a good schedule yet since I started working. I got thrown off with the phone call wanting me to work on my only day off. I didn't work, but this seems to be a reg. thing that needs to end. I will be starting to look for a new job soon. This one just isn't going to work.

On a happier note, I signed up for The Color Run last night. It's not till Sept., but they had a early bird type deal going on till Jan.5. That's 2 I've commited to and I will be commiting to more soon. That should get my butt in gear!

Enjoy the last 2 days of the year everyone! I hope they are good ones!

I ran 5 miles today. It was nice. Leisurely. It was the aftermath of a rainy night, so the roads were wet. We saw a turkey.

Great running weather this morning, while I was in church. By the time I got out this afternoon it was raining, which does help melt the accumulated snow. I never want to go out in the rain, but once I get there it always seems to turn into a pleasant run.

I was able to take in the warmer temps yesterday morning and did a 5k run. It was a boring run because I basically ran back and forth on our road. It was all I could do. Tried the trail but the snow was too deep to be able to do a decent run. Today the temps are dropping alot so this afternoon I will get on the treadmill and then I'm hoping to get on the trainer tonight for a bit. Indoor exercise for most of this week I'm afraid. Neg. temps most of the week with even colder wind chills.

Today I'm looking forward to going to the grocery store and then cooking dinner tonight. Haven't done much of that lately. This week I should be able to get a better schedule down.

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Beautiful morning for a run - 41 F and cloudy, with W wind 12 mph. Grabbed the nice weather for my long run of the week, then we actually got some sunshine in the afternoon.

After realizing how lazy I really was and how it neagitly affects my weight I pushed myself today on my run. I ran 1.5km in 11 minutes, so around 8.2Km/hr. So I am happy with that time. Maybe later today I will do another run, tomorrow is a no running day. I forgot how happy I am after a run.

Today is a non-running day on my schedule. The weather was decent for running this morning, 28 F with negligible wind and only a few flakes of snow in the air; but I held to discipline and walked. Because I was walking, I could take the twisty route around the neighborhood and confirm that yes, trodden snow on the sidewalks makes that area unsuitable for running until the next thaw.

I managed a quick treadmill run yesterday morning. I ended up talking with someone longer than I expected. The next couple of days are going to be really mild so I need to try and get out. I got a light for Christmas so I can get out in the dark. I will only do it around my house by my self though. Trainer is up and running. I should take a short run tonight and hop on that thing afterwards.

Have a great day!

Hello Everyone.

Today I was able to get out again for a run. I thought I ran slow today but I found out that I was only about 7 seconds over my goal time for todays distance. We'll see what tomorrow brings :)

Good morning. We actually have very nice weather here today. I will head to the Y after work for run and bike. Tomorrow I'll get up early and swim. So glad the holiday is over. I'm sort of a Grinch. emoticon

I went out for a relatively early run on Boxing Day, and found snow in the air again. The shoulders were variable, some clear, some with snowy and slushy patches, some snow covered; but the Christmas traffic was gone, so it was liveable.

Today will be the fourth day in a row that I remove some snow from my driveway. It wasn't much on Christmas Day, but there's a streak here.

Good Morning!

I survived Christmas but unfortunately I over ate and my weight shot up. Today is the start of eating normal again and getting my exercise in. I don't work until 1 so I have plenty of time. I just hope that next weeks schedule is better and my hrs are where they should be. I'm tired of these 40 hr weeks. I didn't apply for full time especially for this kind of pay.

I hope you have a great day everyone!

Merry Christmas Everyone.

I have been so busy with family, shopping and everything I haven't had time to run. (Been in a slump since Friday though.... got laid off) This morning though after presents I finally got my but in gear and went for a run finally feeling better. I didn't go far, only 1Km. I don't think I'll make my goal of being able to run a full 5Km by March but I'll keep trying. I did hit my goal for time though. 1km under 6 min. For those of you who check here constantly I know I say the same thing over and over again about the 1Km and 6 minutes, but everytime I take a break I go back to a goal I know I can beat so then tomorrow I can push knowing I accomplished one goal.

Today is a non-running day, so I went out to walk yesterday's run route, in reverse direction. The shoulders were covered in perhaps an inch of crunchy snow, but traffic between 8 and 9 Christmas morning was so light that I rarely had to leave the traffic lane.

About halfway through, it occurred to me that if this had been a running day, the starting temperature of 4 F would have been a new low temperature for me to run in. (It's nowhere close to a record low for walking.) But I held to the schedule discipline, and it was a pleasant walk. Got home, and the temperature had risen to 12, a degree warmer than the coldest I've run in.

Since it was extremely cold yesterday, I did a treadmill run. We got about 4-5 inches of sow overnight, but I'm hoping to still get out for a run sometime today. The temps rose overnight so it's not quite as cold as it was.

Crabby people yesterday. I don't know why they don't stay home. Why do they feel they need to spread their bad mood onto everyone else. I remained pleasant and with one cust. who swore every word in the book, I maintained a smile. I'm sure she didn't appreciate that but too bad!

Have a wonderful day everyone!

I have to get a Santa hat that's okay to run in. The one I have is warm enough, but not really washable.

Oh, well. At least I have the antlers I got for the Reindeer Run.

26 F with NE wind 8 mph and snow this morning. Went out and ran on snow-covered shoulders, because the weather forecast says it's supposed to accumulate an inch, get colder through the day, and have the winds pick up. Turned out to be a pleasant run on Christmas Eve morning.

Christmas Day will be a non-running day for me. I have the time, but I've gone the route of running too much on my time off at the end of the year before. This year I'll maintain discipline on the normal non-running days, and hopefully avoid injury so I can keep running through the winter.

Well below zero windchills this morning so it's the treadmill. 3-4 inches of snow overnight but i'm still going to try and get out for a Christmas Day run as long as we don't have blowing snow and cold windchills again.

Today is a planned non-running day, and a day off work. Walked 5.2 miles this morning at 39 F when the forecast was for falling temps all day long. As I write this, the driveway has a coating of snow.

Tomorrow will be a running day, and there will be that snow to deal with. That's okay, I have the clothing for temps in the teens, and I practiced the drill with snow on the ground earlier this month. The warm stretch didn't quite get rid of all the snow piles from the last batch, but it did well enough that I have somewhere to put the next batch of snow.

Yay for the trainer!!! I'll on mine 45 minutes tonight after work.

Today I'm sitting at my office, wearing a santa hat and santa shorts. I've got on black leggings and a white top, so I can easily take off my santa shorts and be office-ish emoticon

Tomorrow I'm going to get up and go to the Y for a swim, then I'll do my speed work that I missed Saturday. I think Christmas morning I'll run 10 miles or so. Christmas morning runs are pretty awesome :-)

Jeri-I hate when my schedule gets thrown off like that. I usually like Xmas. This year I wish it would just go away.

I finally got outside for a 6 mile run yesterday. Not a good pace by any means, but at least I was out there. My lungs were just having a tough time. I've been trying to get over this cold so between that and not running for over a week except for 1 time on the treadmill, my body struggled. I should be able to get runs in this week though. Not today, but the rest of the week, I should be able to either get outside or on the treadmill. Our trainer arrived so now we can start our cycling workouts.

Have a nice Monday everyone!

This weekend has NOT gone as planned. I really don't like Christmas. I know, all bah humbug and everything. But I just want to have a relaxing holiday, not a shopping holiday that runs on everyone's schedule but mine.I haven't run at all this weekend. Not at all. How horrible is that??? Oh well. I'm off Tuesday & Wednesday, so I will run those days.

Fog and drizzle today. I'll take it. This time of year, anything I don't have to shovel is good weather. Got out for my longest run since coming off the last foot injury, 8.25 miles.

Moby-at this point, I would take those temps any day.

Another snowy start this morning. Plus another ice glaze out there. I can run in the snow, but the glaze of ice is not good. It makes even walking a challenge. Running on the roadways is not really possible either because of the snow and slush and the fact that you can't get close enough to the curb. I hope it doesn't end up being another treadmill day. I may try the path across the highway if anything.

I hope everyone has a nice Sunday. I don't work until this evening and then I work everyday except Xmas day this week. This will make me a very cranky person if I can't get a workout in.

51 on my porch this morning, with falling temps through the day and rain. I ran the Reindeer Run 5K in Rochester NY at a temperature somewhere in the lower 40s, with north wind 12 mph, and turned in a PR. More details in my blog today.

Good morning!

Yesterday did not go as planned ! I got ready to run and drove to the lake, got out and found the path had a layer of ice on it. I couldn't even walk on it. So back into the car and home. Got on the treadmill. I couldn't do roads yesterday because of the snow and slush. I will try again tomorrow seeing as we had more freezing drizzle over night and we're suppose to get more snow later. I guess I'm going to have to get to the store and see if I can find some spikes for running. I've got the other things but I don't think I'd like running with those on. Otherwise I'm going to have to hit the trails which I know will have snow on them for traction. We'll see what happens tomorrow. It's the first day of Winter and I'm wishing Spring would hurry up and get here!

Have a great Saturday!

Jeri-I'm jealous of those temps.

Moby-Above freezing is a treat here!

It's snowing lightly this morning, but it's in the 20's and I am planning on getting outside sometime today for a run. I don't care if it's just a mile. The fresh air will do me good. My nose may run like a faucet, but I'll make sure I have lots of kleenex with me. There's just something refreshing about running in the snow. It's really beautiful and peaceful.

Enjoy your Friday everyone! I know I will!

Good morning. It's been beautiful weather here, too. Today will be in the 60s and rainy. I started the day with 1,000 yards in the pool, with speed work thrown in for good measure. I'll be riding an hour on the bike trainer tonight. It's supposed to rain all weekend. Tomorrow morning there's a holiday run sponsored by our local (35 miles away) run/walk shop. They always have lots of good giveaways. I'll be there, rain or shine.

It can be tough mentally, not being able to run. Been there, done that, don't want to do it again.

Today broke the snowfall streak at 15 days. No fresh snow today, temp climbed above freezing, and the shoulders were mostly clear for my lunch run. It felt like spring after the last couple of weeks.

Becky, sorry you don't feel well. I hope the days off help you.

It's 56 today, and I had a nice 3 mile tempo run during lunch. I've got some lunges to do, but I think I'll do that after work. emoticon

We've only gotten a few inches of snow, but the cold and wind have been brutal. I haven't run since Sat., but I also have had a cold and haven't felt that good. Hopefully having a couple days off will help. I'm trying to get runs in the rest of the week. My mind also needs the runs.

The Lake Effect Snow Machine is up and running this week. I shoveled the driveway last evening, this morning before running, and in lieu of a walking cool down after running. But I did get in my (relatively) long slow run of the week, 7 miles. The plan is another 5 miles tomorrow, as I work on consolidating a 20 mile per week base.

Hello again. I'm very happy atm. I finally got my but in gear and went for a run. I ran 1 Km in 6 minutes. That means I finally reached my goal for 1 Km. I'm very happy about this. Now when I run I will alternate distance and speed for my runs. With everything getting crazy for Christmas my running time has definately been shortened. I just have to keep trying to get out there and run.

We've got light snow this morning. The kind that makes it a bit slick, but I still have plans to get outside. Temps should be in the upper teens to low 20's. A bit of a breeze also. I bought a pair of gloves that have a mitten over them. Will try them out to see if they actually are any good. Thank goodness the holiday shopping season will be coming to an end soon. Maybe I'll be able to have more time to workout like I'm used to. I can't take these treadmill workouts.

Have a great weekend everyone!

This week has been really bad. I havent gone for a run once. Well besides at work but even then I'm not running much anymore. Everyday after work I come home and am busy so I have no time for it. I also don't have a treadmill so when the weather is bad I can't run inside. Today though I came home had no plans but I am so drained mentally and physically I just dont have the motivation to run. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to go for a run.

The forecast calls for a high of 19 F tomorrow, which is okay for running, and for an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow. I hope the snow is an over-forecast for my neighborhood. Bought some warmer running mittens today so I could do a long slow run tomorrow in the teens with wind; snow on the ground complicates the picture. I don't like snow on the ground at the same time as Christmas traffic at all.

Maybe I'll get lucky. Much of the time, more snow is forecast than I actually end up getting.

I had a good 4 mile run last night. 1/2 mile warm up, 3 miles hard, 1/2 mile cool down. I felt like a runner! This year has been so screwed up with injuries, I was glad to feel like a runner again. My daughter and I are supposed to run a 5K tomorrow. It will be cold and rainy. We may skip it.

She woke up one morning and threw away all her excuses...

2 treadmill runs is all I did this week. The last couple of days have been awful eating days too. I need my workout time back. 20's for the weekend and my goal is to get outside for a run each day. I don't care if it's just a mile. The fresh air will be good for my head! Sales aren't up where they want them to be at the store I work at so they've decided to add a few extra hrs. a day that they're open. Now it's 6 am to 12 midnight. They're gonna shoot themselves in the foot over this one for sure. We have no business from 10-11 at night so adding an additional hr is going to be tough. One more hr. of standing around doing nothing! Plus the 6 am? I and most of the employees can't wait till this is over. My holiday is pretty ruined anyway. Next yr. will be better cuz I won't be working retail if I can help it.

Had to use the treadmill this morning and last evening - too dark outside. I miss running outside and I am hoping that there won't be ice on the roads this weekend.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Becky, I worked retail once for about 3 months. It was not fun. Some people love it. I'm not a person who loved it.

I saw my coach yesterday, and today I did my official workout. 60 minutes on the bike trainer, keeping my cadence steady at 90 (slightly faster than comfortable). Throughout the day I will have to do a series of lunges and side planks. My first tri will be in April.

Good Morning!

Another treadmill day. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to get outside this weekend. I'd probably do an outdoor run later today if it wasn't for the fact that I really need to get my shopping done and since I only have 1 day off during the week, it makes it difficult to get my workouts in when I want them. This will be my only year of working retail. It really stinks especially when people are constantly calling in sick or are quitting because they don't like the hrs. I didn't expect to work so many hrs a week. I've only been doing 2 or 3 workouts a week which makes me crabby.

I hope everyone has a great week!

I don't think I would be brave enough to run on a trail designated for ATVs. I wouldn't expect the riders to be looking for me, and I wouldn't trust myself to have good enough reaction time to get out of the way of any possible stupidity on the part of an ATV rider.

But that's just me. I do run on public roads, and some people think I'm taking an unconscionable amount of risk doing that. There are roads I won't run on, due to narrow shoulders and the typical traffic conditions; but I'm fine on most of the roads near my home.

One of the scariest things I saw was last winter. I was running against traffic, and the oncoming traffic all stayed nicely in the traffic lane. But there was a driver in a driveway, pointed toward the road, waiting to turn right. Of course, he was watching the oncoming stream of traffic and I got a nice view of the back of his head. Sure enough, a hole in traffic appeared right about when I got to that driveway. I think he was more scared that I was, because I surprised him; but I was ready to avoid his turn because I saw the situation coming.

That situation motivated me to buy a SPI belt and start taking my wallet with me on all runs. The thought process is, if something freakish happens and I twist an ankle avoiding a life threatening accident, I have the means to pay a cab to get home. Or in the worst case, I have ID other than my cell phone in the event that I'm unconscious.

Back to your situation, yes, the ATV riders should slow down if they see you. But you can't count on them doing what they should, and you get hurt worse than they do if they make a mistake. My opinion of the typical ATV rider is similar to yours, which is why I wouldn't be brave enough to run on their trails.

I think that yes if they see you they should slow down as they go by, however if there are trails specific for running, then the motor vehicles cant be expected to go slow on there tracks all the time. Maybe explore the forest a bit there should be a clear/safe walk/run trail throughout the forest. If not talk to the city (or whoever is in charge of it) and ask that where both people and motor vehicles use a section of a road signs be put up. Yes I know that it is nature and forest and should be kept the same but if it is a safety thing then something should be in place. As for the tracks not being in good condition, its a forest it happens, especially if it is not a common road. However you can talk to whomever is in charge of it and mention where the trail is that is in need of repairs.

I don't think I would run on a 4-wheeler trail. The people fly through there and are dangerous. That's exactly what the paths are made for, and whoever they are maintained by (parks & rec?) should patrol them and repair damage to the trails/forest. I have no problem with the trails, but I wouldn't run on one.

I have to share something that happened on my long run yesterday that got me wondering what others think. It's a bit of a rant however ;-)

I run this 22k circuit using a combination of mountain bike paths, farm tracks and forestry roads. The mountain bike tracks and farm roads are off limits to motorised vehicles however the forestry tracks are designated 4x4 zones. When I get up to 15+K runs I need to use these tracks to get the distance and hill work for my marathon training. And there are about 50K of roads to follow within the forest with good quality hills/mountains. I think I've set the scene...

I have a natural dread of 4x4's. The loud whine of the engine way out in forest, the narrow roads, and my view that the men who use these vehicles (dirt bike, quad bike, truck) are redneck hoons, make me live in fear of one of them hitting me. Though mountain bikers use these roads I rarely see them or any other runners out here. I wear reflective gear, I stay to the side of the track, I listen out for the sound of an approaching vehicle, but my fear just creeps up and up as I traverse the track. I do meet them pretty regularly and most of the time they are going slow(ish), they see me and move over a bit, and sometimes even smile and wave (though pretty rare). But there is the 10% who don't slow down, act like I'm invisible, and crank there engines extra loud as they go past. This is terrifying to me. I have no protection against motorised vehicles, they spray rocks as they go past, they are so so loud, and they can kill me if we collided. I will never cause them much harm in an accident, will I?

Yesterday I hit my lowest point with my fear. I came around a corner on a long steep hill (1400ft peak) and there was all this muddy water and debris rushing down the hill. I wondered where it was coming from as I ran through it. Around the next curve I heard the motor and saw the water coursing out of a cut on the side of the road. The 4x4 guys don't just use the road, they like the challenge of going over the steep embankments on either side as well. This cut was quite over grown and probably hadn't been used for awhile based on the debris coming down the track. How they were producing muddy water still mystifies me (?), anyway, I could hear the engine revving loudly but couldn't see it. I panicked thinking it would come flying out the cut-through and bouncing onto the road, mud flying (think monster truck!). I ran back down the hill a few metres, waited a minute, nothing happened except the engine revving very loudly. I decided to try to sprint past the cut-through. My adrenaline was pumping as I sprinted up hill all the way to the top of the hill, another 150-200ft higher. The engine never really changed. It sounded like a helicopter hovering over the forest. I took 5min at the top to listen to hear if it was moving but it didn't change really. I'm guessing now that they were actually stuck up in there in a mud pit.

I ran way too fast across the ridge to get back to the farm track that is vehicle free. And I was a combination of angry and scared. The farm gate never looked so inviting!

I realise that my love of running and all things self propelled is not shared by everyone. But I just can't see these people's point of view. Motors destroy all that is lovely about the forest. You burn zero calories and build zero strength participating in this 'sport'. Though I don't enjoy speedway at least they aren't destroying the beauty of nature when doing laps.

Ok, rant finished. Not sure about next run in the forest however...May use a different route that is less traversed and further away from the access road. May also call the ranger and ask him what patrols are done. Any ideas?

Charity

It has been really cold here, and I've been super busy so today was the first day in about a week or so that I could go for a run. So I didnt push myself distance wise, I ran at what I thought was the same speed as normal but I was actually faster today.

Good job, Kevin!
I got outside for 5.4 miles today. Windchill was 12, real temp was 24. That is just about perfect running temps! Not too icy.

Snow flurries and 29 F when I started running this morning, but sunshine when I finished. The wind was a little stronger than I thought it would be, but it was still a nice 55 minute run. Beats the heck out of being on the dreadmill.

We've got the extremely cold temps right now and we're waiting for the snow to start on Sunday. I've already done treadmill workouts and will do one more today. I'm going to try and get out for a run tomorrow before the snow starts. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the wind which is driving the temps down in the teens below zero. Makes for a very cold run, but if I don't get out there before the snow, I don't know when I'll get out there again. Work has been taking up much of my time these days and I'm barely started on Xmas shopping. Today I'm going to make an attempt to bake. Not too sure how that will pan out. Just haven't been in the mood and that usually means that nothing will turn out.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Good morning. We are waiting on the snow, ice and sleet that is supposed to come today. I think it's probably 2 hours away.

Yesterday I met with my personal trainer. When I got injured back in May, I quit seeing him. Now he's setting me up with a plan for next year. Getting a trainer is the best investment I could ever make in my health/wellness. I'm ready to get back into racing shape :-)

Jeri-Sounds like a fun time!

It's been a little iffy with the weather here. About a half hr. before I was to get off of work, it started raining, then snowing and then a mix of rain, sleet and snow. Darn! I ended up on the treadmill. Oh well, a workout is better than no workout, but I still hate the treadmill!

Another long day of work tomorrow and then I'm off on Thurs and will be out looking for Christmas gifts. Hopefully, I can start and finish. Whatever doesn't get done will have to be bought online.

Have a great Wed. everyone! I'm praying it doesn't snow! emoticon

It's nice to have a running buddy :-) I ran for two years with a friend who is my daughter's age. Then in April she ran a marathon that she executed perfectly, and about a week later she said, "I'm done with running." And that was it for her! So weird. I run with my daughter all the time now. We have a lot of fun.

I'm excited. I will have a new pair of running shoes waiting for me on my porch when I get home. Yay!

Well I now feel better about a weekend of sitting and doing no exercise. I came home from my weekend away and went for a 1.6km which is .35Km more than the last run I did. I also was able to keep up my speed of around 8Km/hr. Atm that isnt the speed that will get me to 5km in under 30 minutes but the longer I can keep my speed the less speed training I will do later. Also I didnt sprint the last 2 blocks like I wanted to because I didnt want to leave my Japanese student behind, she joined me for my run. New running budy emoticon

Tomorrow we are doing my sibling Thanksgiving. It should be fun! Today my daughter and I ran 5.5 miles on trails. Hilly, muddy, snowy, icy. Slick. We climbed trees and did other crazy stuff, too. So fun!

Good Afternoon!

I've had a busy week at work. Yesterday it really stressed me out. DH and DS are in FL this week and I'm stuck at home taking caring of the dogs, del. papers, working and daily house work plus trying to get my runs in. I'm not used to this and I stress out easily. Good thing I have the weekend off.

When I used to run when I was younger, I would go out when it was starting to get dark. I didn't want anyone to see me because I thought they would laugh at the way I ran. Back then, running wasn't as popular. Now, I don't care. There are all types of people running. It makes me proud to be out there with them all. Be proud that you can run. Just remember, running isn't easy and there are a lot of thin people who could never do what you are doing. Be proud that you can do it. Also remember, that running on a treadmill is much different than running outside. You will find it a bit harder to run outside. Just make the move and stick with it. Eventually it will become no big deal to get outside and run and you won't care what people are thinking.

Jeri-Christmas is stressing me out this year also. I've had so many people tell me they are done shopping and people were doing a lot of shopping today. I haven't even made a list out yet. I have no clue what to get anyone. Plus I need to find the time to shop anyway.

I hope everyone is and has had a nice Thanksgiving. It doesn't really feel like it to me. Maybe next year.

Good job! You'll do great on the 5K!

I have been lazy all week. Christmas is stressing me out. I am not a fan of Christmas, not at all. I love Thanksgiving, and now Christmas is spilling over into it. Uggghhhh... Oh well. I will enjoy my day. We're going to my dad's house at 11:00, and then I'll run home afterward. It's a nice, hilly 6 mile run. It will be very, very cold. Our oldest daughter is coming into town this afternoon. She lives about 2 hours away.

She woke up one morning and threw away all her excuses...

So I have decided to sign up for a 5km run in March. Today I ran right after work for 1.25 km and got a time of 9 minutes and 15 seconds. So everyday is another step closer. :)

Thanks guys :) emoticon

I needed the boost. I didn't go for a run after work today though, I got to run at work... :( Not in my plan first thing in the morning after dealing with my foreman but it definatiley helped me clear my head. So I will work on the distance first then speed. Thanks for all the help :)

When you are comfortable in your own skin the number on the scale does not matter. Start your run slow speed comes with time. I have run many marathons and have watched all sizes cross the finish. Do not let weight hold you back!!! Being able to run and reach your goal is the reward in the end. You can do this!!!

What is wrong with people?? There is no reason for any comment on your weight. Everyone has some kind of struggle, some struggles are just more visible than others. When you reach a running goal, you will feel invincible! It is a very powerful feeling, and it will motivate you even more :-)

One of the reason I don't want to run outside, is almost every single person I know has made a comment about my weight. So I am really self conscious about it. I know I wont be able to hold the speed when I start adding distance. Idk this week I will focus on my time for the 1km, and if I reach that goal then add distance to it. Things will get harder as I return to the work week but I will try to run

If this is the way you do it, though, whatever works best for you is how you should do it. But really, try adding some time to the run while you're by yourself. The first time you go longer (2k, for instance), you will be so proud! But be prepared, when you are running for speed, if you add distance to it, you won't hold the speed. The further you go, the slower your pace will be. So don't be disappointed by that. Eventually the entire run will speed up.
