Thank you for the advice! I can't wait to try it out. I have been dodging donating blood whenever I am in training mode but now at least I can help out still.

I have asked in the blood donation places and they seem to not really get it. I think they may believe I mean running a mile here or there. But for someone who runs 25-30 miles a week, it is really important to know how it will affect you.

Ah! A subject I know something about.

When you give blood, they take a full pint ... reds and all. Your reds are what carries your oxygen. That is why giving blood affects your running.

I give platelets. With platelet apheresis you get all your reds back. I have never had a problem running after platelet donation. I do wait at least 4 hours before I run ... actually more because I schedule on no-run days. The only reason I wait for the 4 hours is because they tell you to wait four hours before doing anything strenuous so your arms have a chance to heal.

I have never required a nap nor had a headache after platelet donation as I often did after whole blood.

And! You can give platelets every two weeks. I have heard tell some centers let you come in every week.

I would imagine that platelets would not affect you like that. They don't transport oxygen through your body.

Give your blood bank a call to find out how platelet donation may affect you.

When I give whole blood it severely affects my training for almost a week. Does anyone know if giving platelets would be easier on my system? I still want to donate but I have a half marathon coming up at the end of the month and I can't miss out on too many training days.

Any advice?

Thanks!
