Thank you for the encouraging words and prayers. I am definitely ready to be done with the pain so I will take whatever they send me. - Also, thank you for the doctor's name. I am uncomfortable with the one I am seeing now so if he recommends surgery someone else will be doing it.

Wish the news was better, but praying for a good outcome for you. I've not had experience in this area, so I'll let those who have do the recommendations.

I am sad to hear the news. If fusion is your only option, recovery is not as bad as people think. I was back to work in office only 5 days after getting out of the hospital (worked 2 days from home). You just have to take it slow and be careful until the staples come out, then you can start doing physical therapy. I feel better than I have in years. My fusion was a little over a year ago now. My L5-S1 was fused by Dr. Stackniak of Brain and Spine center of Texas. She also did my husbands fusion, my father-in-laws fusion as well as fixing his ulnar nerve. Her track record is amazing. She's amazing.

If you have pain anything like I experienced (I'm sure you do). You actually wake up from fusion in less pain than when they put you under...and that is the truth. The stitches in my belly and staples in my back were nothing compared to what I lived with for a year.

The disks between L4 and L5 as well as between L5 and S1 are essentially disintegrated. Now they are ordering a CT scan because the actual bone at L5 is out of place and they are concerned the spine is slipping so I might have to have the bones fused. It was not the message I was looking for. I will know more after the CT scan. In the meantime I am getting that steroid injection into the spine to relieve some of the inflammation and pain. - I was hoping to share better news with everyone.

ouch, my spine doctor had me do mri and whatever else in same building hour before my appointment, and bring my disk from them up stairs with me. They went over it all right then and there, I didn't have to wait for another appointment.

Hope you guys find out more soon.

Yeah after hours clinic sent me to ER Monday night, not how I wanted to spend 6 hours.

I hate the waiting as well. My first appointment with the spine doctor was April 7th and I had to wait until today for my follow up. I find out today at 10 AM what is going on with my spine. I am eager to know what is going on but nervous to find out.

I really don't like it when a medical professional can't or won't answer basic questions. I realize they want the specialist to explain your symptoms/condition, but still I hate the waiting.

ER? I hope everything is okay. I saw the neurologist today and there is no damage to my nerves. She said my S1 and L5 were actually sensitive. I asked if that was a good thing or bad thing and she said she would need to let the spine doctor answer that question. Don't really know what to make of that answer.

Instead of spending my evening like I hoped to, I ended up spending it in the ER, not a fun evening.
I have to go to some mandatory thing at kid's school tonight, hopefully the weather doesn't get too crappy.

I have not been fishing in a long time.

I was at a kid gymnastics place yesterday for my nieces birthday party. She is turning 4.
We jumped and jumped on trampolines for most of the party.
I then went to her place after the party and just hungout with family for the rest of the day. She kept wanting me to play barbies with her.
I only got in 1 walk yesterday, but I also got in a workout with the jumping. For my goals, I am counting the walking at the gym for my afternoon walk

I am still exhausted from yesterday.

My little mini-vacation was wonderful and I didn't want to come back home to reality. But alas we must and I find myself at the office today working away... It's been a productive morning, but I sure do wish I were in a boat with my pole over the water. emoticon

I am trying to get into a better habit of bringing my lunches as well, and doing a better job of meal prep. I walk after work, and on my lunch break, I don't in the morning because I am up at 5, and out the door to work at 5:30.

I bring lunch almost every day but we have free snacks in the office and unfortunately I lack the self-control to keep from indulging. So it isn't a great diet tool but it definitely cuts down on food costs. - I love fishing. I am the only one in the house that likes fish so we usually just catch and release. I hope you have a great mini-vacation.

Well I'm on a mini vacation of sorts. DH surprised me for my birthday with a long weekend camping & fishing with 4 of our 7 kids. We had a great time fishing today and the guys are cooking up our catch as I type this. Life is good!

I need something like that during the weekends, not so much during the work day.

During the work day, I walk before work, and after work. I am then downing water and get up to go bathroom every 1-2 hours. I then go out for lunch.

I am trying to get where I bring lunch to work. When I get that habit set up, I plan on 30min eating while watching sitcom through netflix or something, and then 30min walking around parking lot. But I am first needing habit of bringing lunch to work with me.

12 times a day my Apple Watch reminds me to stand up and walk around. Otherwise I sit for hours without thinking about it. I find it to be very helpful unless I am on a plane and the seat belt sign is on.

We obviously have very different dogs. As soon as it starts raining mine bolts out the dog door and stands in the rain. Then she comes in smelling like wet dog and tries to lean on me to get pet. - First goal of PT is to realign the hips. My physical therapist thinks that is where all my problems started. She is also a kinesiologist so I feel like I am in good hands.

woohoo for physical therapy, glad to hear it is helping. I'm back in PT right now for my neck and upper back. I've been getting tension migraines again. I love my PT guy, he's really awesome.

You puppy sounds so cute. It's funny how they are about grass and things, my dog refused to walk in grass when she was little. I wonder if it feels funny on their feet.

My dog is weird.
He loves to go for walks. He will go onto grass to do his business but he does not like to walk on grass. He will take the shortest path back to the sidewalk to walk on the side walk instead. Whenever there are other people walking, I have to almost drag him with leash to the edge of the sidewalk to allow other people room, he will not just walk on the grass to let other people by (unless there is a stroller, and then he tries to run into the street to get around them).
He will try to jump over puddles instead of walking through them.
He will also try to stay close to the building underneath the little bit of roof over the sidewalk when it rains.

I did make him walk in the rain today (it was only lightly sprinkling). The raincoat I got him is too big for the part that velcros together, but too small for everything else. Another raincoat I got him, fits his length but the velcro spots are way too large to even touch at all. If I can just find something to keep the longer raincoat on him we would be good.

Oh, I also bought little doggy shoes. I put them on him for our afternoon walk yesterday. They did not come off at all. He jumped a few times right at the beginning of the walk, I think trying to get them off, but after that he just walked normally.
We only did 1 walk and one of the shoes has a hole in it. I think it was because of his claws. We need to get them cut back, but I am so afraid of cutting his claws. We normally leave that to the groomers but they get so long between groomer visits.
I want to get him used to shoes for multiple reasons. Like when it is wet so he is not as afraid of puddles, and during the middle of texas summer so he doesn't burn his paws on the sidewalks.

I am glad to hear your exercises are helping your back HAPPYCPA1965. Keep it up!

On Friday I asked the radiologist for a copy of my MRI hoping to see how bad the bulge was only to find out I have 5 different things wrong. Then I was really depressed. Started physical therapy on Monday and the exercises I am doing are already starting to provide some relief. Now I am hopeful.

I am not walking to and from work today. I have puppy this week (share him with my mother).
So I am walking him in the morning before and after work, and then driving to work.

I am looking into things that will help with walking puppy. Like shoes for him to wear for either rain weather or hot weather (for him to not burn feet when walking in summer), and raincoat for him (or maybe a doggy umbrella, something to get him to not be afraid of going into rain).

A coworker of mine at the job I left in January lives in Prosper and loves it.

I've been starting to glance at what is coming on the market in the Irving/Farmers Branch area, we won't have enough for a down payment till next year, but I like to see what kind of things are coming up for sale. That area is kind of central between our two works. I work in downtown Fort Worth and hubby is in Allen.

A lot of rain yesterday kept me indoors most of the day, got a lot of things done around the house. Did get some early birthday presents though.

For some reason my dog went nuts from the thunderstorms last night and kept crying. It was a long night.

I worked in Plano for years. Great neighborhoods there. We ended up further north in Prosper and love it here.

Went and looked at a house this morning in Plano. Not exactly what we're looking for, but we're getting closer. Now we're at Twisted Root Burger Co. having lunch. I went with the lotz of 'shrooms burger, no bun. Not bad...

Working on my boss's IMDb page today. I bit tedious, but worth the effort. Hate working on Saturday when the weather is nice though.

I have been feeling a bit more tired these last few days, but I have also managed to walk to work for the last 3 days (as well as walking home).

I hope everyone is doing well, and I hope the weather stays nice this weekend.

Oh, I also managed to do some yoga the last few days. I am planning on doing more today.

I'm feeling a little better today thankfully. Still a bit tired, but not like the last few days.

It's supposed to be a pretty day. There is some kind of arts festival going on in downtown fort worth where I work, so I'll go walk around and explore on my lunch break.

Thank you. That sounds identical to what my doctor said the options were and I think they were even in that order. I already had my MRI and x-rays but I do not meet with him until April 27 so now it is just waiting around to see what I am dealing with. - They did give me some exercises to strengthen and loosen the area and they seem to be helping so I am hoping physical therapy is an option.

Happy - I did do other treatments before surgery. I went 7 years with off and on pain until I finally did surgery. Steroids helped a lot, cortisone shot in the booty. If it got really bad, a muscle relaxer and a mild pain killer. By the time I went to surgery I was in 24/hr pain, it wasn't a come an go thing any more. Surgery is always a final option. If it is a herniation, and it isn't a large one, they usually start by offering you the epideral shots. They put you under and insert a numbing and pain agent into your spinal column to numb the inflamed nerves and give you some relief. This works for some, but not all. I know people it didn't help at all, and others who went 3 years pain free. It's a hit and miss and not guaranteed. You always have the option of steroids and physical therapy, that is what I did for years and it helped a lot.

Then they do a discetomy, basically shave off the part of disk that is protruding. It's a couple hour surgery with a quick recovery time. The final option if required is what I had, where they cut you open from the front and back at the same time (scar from belly button down 4 inches and scar from tailbone up about the same), remove any remainder disk if any, put in a titanium cage and rods in place of the disk. The cage holds stem cells that eventually fill the hole where the disk was with bone, making your two vertebrae become one.

I had an MRI without contrast and an Xray done before seeing the spine specialist.
He said there was is no structural issue.

I have not had whatever it is activate since christmas eve so at least it is back to not happening often.
When I started seeing docs about it, I was hoping to get it figured out and fixed before I really started working out a lot again. During college, it almost became a weekly problem after taking a yoga class (for school yoga class). The more active I am, the more often it seems to activate. But maybe if I take it slow, and I keep paying attention to when it happens, and how long I am unable to move for then maybe I will not need a doctor to fix it.
I just hate the fact that I can get this pain that immobilizes me for 30min-1hr and no one knows what is causing it.

L5 huh? That must be a common one. That is where my doctor thinks mine is. I am getting an x-ray and MRI this afternoon at 4 PM. Unfortunately I will not get the results until April 27th. But the Prednisone they put me on is helping a lot. - Did you have to have surgery or did alternate treatments help? - Katrick, if I like my doctor I will share his name.

Katrick...have you ever had an MRI of your lower spine done? The only way to see if you have trapped nerves or a herniated disk of any sort is to have an MRI with contrast done on the are that is hurting. I went years with the kind of pain you describe, doctors telling me it's a back spasm, etc. I finally had a good doctor say my pain is not normal, ordered me an MRI and sent me straight to a spine doctor. I ended up using a different one that they sent me to, but ultimately it ended up I had a 11 mm herniated L5-S1 disk. By the time the pain got to be daily and where I could no longer do things like stretching or anything to help, it was 24 mm herniated, putting me straight to spinal fusion, no discetomy or anything.

Either way, both of you good luck and be careful. Trapped nerves are no joke, cause a lot of pain, and depending how long they have been trapped and how long they've been damaged, it can take years to heal, so even after surgery some pain will remain where nerves were damaged. A nerve only heals an inch every 6 weeks or something like that, I forget what the doc told me. Besides a little bit of nerve pain now and then, my back is sooooo much better than it was. Even though I have titanium in my lower spine, I woke up with less pain right after surgery than when I went under.

Happy work-from-home Thursday for me. Have been running around all day getting groceries and going to a couple of Estate/Rummage sales. Hit the jackpot at one Rumnage sale on LPs. Purchased 18 classic rock & country albums for $1 each.

I have kept up 2 walks daily!

I did not stretch or do any yoga yesterday. I had a headache and was too exhausted after spending 8 hours at a customer's office.

I did a walk this morning and it was a little chilly. Hopefully we will have beautiful weather for my walk this afternoon.

I have seen a chiropractor, back and spine specialist and pt doctor who all have no idea what my back problem is. Maybe if yall find good back doctors, I could try them out.
I just cannot lay on back on the floor, or lay on couch with legs off (making my legs be below back). It can make it where I cannot move because of very intense pain in my lower back/hip area.

Thanks for the recommend. I had originally found some highly rated guy near my work and his front office was so difficult to work with that I finally gave up and found a different doctor. But if they recommend surgery I will definitely want a second opinion.

Good luck with that, I hope it goes well. If you need or want a second opinion, I highly recommend the doctor who fixed my back. She is amazing!
Dr. Rebecca Stackniak of Brain and Spine Center of Texas. She is in Plano.

great job on the walking!
We never made it to park, but did a lot of sidewalk art outside. I will for sure get them to the park today though. I'll only have the three little ones on my own, my 15 year old goes to church with her grandma on Wednesday nights.

hope you are feeling better today. It's supposed to be a beautiful day. Of course I work inside all day, but I plan to get out for a walk on my lunch break. I also have all 3 of my nieces for the next couple of days, their mom had to go out of town for work. So after work today I will be picking 4 kids instead of 1. I'm going to take them to the park and hopefully wear them out.

Darn. Our office is empty today so I have no one to hug.

I was sick this weekend, and did not enjoy much of the outdoors.
I tried to go for a walk on Sat and Sun but only made it 1/2 way before heading home for more tissues.

I did manage a full walk this morning. Required a jacket, but otherwise was fairly nice.
