I'm here.....been on SP in the past and just recently started back up. I was up to 288 awhile back and got down to 249, but decided to start smoking again. I have since quit smoking and the weight went to 290...my highest ever. I hope to be in the 220's by the time bow hunting starts in August. I still have lots of critters to chase and hills to climb.

Sorry for horning in, but if you don't mind an old testosterone f_ _ _ (rhymes with art) joining every now and then, I would to chat. I have been on SP for a little over 2 months and have lost 35 pounds using a deficit calorie dashboard that requires eating a certain amount of calories and purposefully walking 4-6 miles a day. Of course, being old, I am afforded the time (about two hours) it takes to amass that kind of distance. I don't propose anyone follow in my footsteps but I know there are times when a chat can help one out of the doldrums and motivate enough to continue on.

Let me know if you ladies mind.

Thanks

Kat,

Your last pounds gained should come off faster than realized. Once they go on fast, they usually come off faster. So they say!!!

I'm sorry to hear of your surgery. I will say a prayer that you will be healthy and healed fast.

Thank you for letting me know of Ravelry. It is the Best. So interesting. Trying to knit a scarf with a cable stitch, the toughest one in the book. I'm such a beginner, its coming out like a doily. I need practice. A lot of it.
I'd like to meet when they have a get together on Sats.and Weds. Do you ever go?

Hi all, I've been on SP forever (well, a handful of years at least!) and I don't know how I didn't find this group until now! So hello! I live in west Salem and have a little boy who turns 6 soon. I'm a social worker for a nonprofit mental health agency that provides services for kids and teens. I'm 5'8", and in HS I was between 170-180lbs, technically overweight for my height but a size 12-13, healthy and vivacious. I'm now in the 250s, not thrilled at all, and determined to get back out of the 200s by my birthday next August!

LOL, no I'm pretty sure there are at least a handful of people in Salem who have heard of Sparkpeople. I know I've told a few :-) Although technically, I live in Stayton. Soooo, I don't know if you count me or not lol.
I love this site! A few years ago I lost 40 pounds. After my last pregnancy I gained some of the weight back. I am just a few pounds shy of where I used to be, but feeling very proud because I'm not stopping this time!

It seems like this group has been pretty quiet since forever... But there has to be quite a few of us because we are doing pretty well on the group leaderboard. Maybe you're like me and keep Salem near to your heart, but choose other teams with more active participants to be more actively involved with.

Hi Janet, I'm sorry you had a bad night! I work nights in the ED and I'm pretty sure I registered you guys that night, you look familiar to me. lol Glad to here your friend is doing better. I also have knee problems and once I get over the initial 'hurt' from starting exercise, then the more I do it the stronger my knee feels. It's the starting and stopping that's the killer. I just signed up for the 10/min of exercise a day challenge hoping that it will help me get into more of a consistent exercise mindset. Due to my schedule, I have such a hard time keeping a routine and sticking to a plan. So hopefully this challenge will be helpful. Everyone can do 10 min/day, right? ;) Good luck!

Hi, I spent last evening at the emergency room after my ex had a bad fall. He's okay, just a slight concussion. He's still dizzy today in spite of medication. I managed to walk around Cosco today and around my building tonight. The pain is decreasing, but my knee is still stiff. No excuses, just do it! emoticon Janet

Hi, all, This is just a quick note because I have to get ready to go to my son's house to babysit my 5-year old granddaughter. I like to spend time with her, but she is tiring!! This will be my first major challenge. Do I eat with them or eat what I have planned? I'm taking my food with me so I'm planning for the best. I may be gone several days. See you when I get back. Love and prayers for you all.

Hi, Back everybody.

I see it has been over 180 days since I have been to SparkPeople, and amost everybody I knew is gone. Bummer. Anyway, I basically reached my 30 pound goal, and in the process gotback normal blood pressure. My main goal now is to get to a healthy 218 pounds (According to the Courthouse bod pod measurements).

I'll offer suggestions for the holidays when we get close this year.

I hope everyone had a good October!

Does anyone have any good ideas or tactics for surviving the coming holiday season without weight gain or losing momentum?

I'm just going to try to stick to the plant-based diet, make SURE I get at least 10 minutes of vigorous activity a day, avoid crowds as much as possible. DH, Mom and I got our flu shots, but now I read that they're only about 58% effective. Sweet. I guess the other 42% depends on washing your hands like a fiend and being anti-social. emoticon

Hope you're enjoying the sunny afternoons. Gotta love 'em while we can.

Well, no hiking for me.......just slow walking in the mall since I have the oxygen to pack around. However, please let me know if you ever get the urge to meet up and have coffee/tea.
This last week I have been overwhelmed helping with the Friends of the Library book sale. Whew! It ended today and I am exhausted. We sold lots of books though and that gives us the means to help the library more and more.
Have a great Monday.

Sarah, Salem has never been a chatty group - I'm not sure why not. Still, keep posting and somebody will answer!

To be fair, I've checked other city teams, and they're not very chatty either as a rule. I guess that's why there are so many special interest teams, like knitters, gardeners, or people with special health concerns.

In this group, we may not stop in to chat, but I think a lot of us do read each other's blogs, and may comment there.

If anyone is interested in a group hike or other activity, try posting it in one of the activity forums on this page. I really want to give people as many chances to get together and do fun activities as possible.

Sandi, you just reminded me that I haven't been to Nichols this year! I need to go down and see what's new. I didn't get out to my greenhouse until late this evening, but I managed to put down some more bricks to line my beds. I thought about planting a leftover bergamot down there, but realized that it would probably grow up through the bottom wire shelf. I'll have to find a place outside for it.

The squirrels have been busy in my greenhouse. I'm finding filberts tucked into every pot of dirt and even one old jelly jar. At least, I think it's the squirrels. The blue jays have been busy too, so it might be them.

Have a good evening ~ and a good week!

Glad to see the gloomy weather hasn't gotten you down! I had my husband help me yesterday cutting back the overgrown lavender and hedges......He has to wield the hedge trimmer because I'm afraid I will accidentally cut my oxygen hose. LOL Happily we accomplished a lot with me being the art director.
On Friday I stopped at Nichols nursery in Albany and bought several plants - lavender sage, a type of Peruvian nasturtium, and some spearmint. The smells are wonderful.
Hope you all are having a good day.
love, Sandi

It's chilly and wet today, but it's still nice enough to get outside and do something. I plan to work in my backyard a little, maybe try digging the area in front of my greenhouse. I want to put down some pea gravel there, make a nice little "landing" instead of the mud that's there now. If it rains, I'll be inside the greenhouse, building a raised bed under the shelves. I want to try growing some herbs there this winter.

Have a great day ~

Thanks for the encouraging words on my weight loss.
Yes the weather is great, so get out if you can and enjoy it.
We will be longing for these warm summer days this winter when the rains come.
I sent you an e-mail about the smoothies.

Salem is a wonderful town to live in and I would love to chat more with some of our 3000 plus members.
As I stated earlier I am out and about a lot.
I am almost at my goal , but the journey will continue as long as I have a food addiction.
And that will be for the rest of my life.
We have some of the best weather for getting out and just walking.
We have been luck not to have the sever heat wave that has hit the rest of the country.
Of course we still have August and some hot weather could still hit us. But it's nothing like other places.
I have said I will never complain again of our rain or what heat we get, it's not bad.
I am drinking a lovely fruit/coconut nut milk/protein smoothie. Makes me think of the islands and feels like I am on vacation.
Hope you all have a great day.

Hi Salem Sparks

One of the greatest qualities of SparkPeople program is the sense of community that we are provided with. So, I am here to extend an invitation to all 3000 + members of the Salem Spark group to take a minute and participate in this "chat". It is such an easy and inviting way to join the community.

Wow it was nice to hear from other Salem Sparkers.
The walks down town sound nice, but I have a water aerobics class on Tuesday and Thursday morning, . I go to class at 8:30 finish at 11:00.
On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I have all morning at the gym. From 8:30 to 12:00.
I also do Aqua Zumba on Monday and Wednesday nights. 5:00 to 7:00
I usually walk in the afternoons, if my allergies are not acting up. Right now the cottonwood trees are giving me so much misery. Even with the pills I take.
In the summer I am up and out walking very early, like 6:30. It's cool and the pollen isn't so bad.
We'll get together sometime.
Take care. Enjoy what summer weather we have.
This 4th weekend is supposed to be very hot and that will be nice for a change.
It's just good to hear from you.
Tisha

We are a small group, yes, but faithful. I have been home on vacation this week, busy busy busy, got in several walks, around visits with the new little one and a family outing to Wildlife Safari. I am busily tending my fledgling tomato and green pepper plants, I only have containers, so not alot of 'exercise' to tend. Back to work tomorrow. it has been a long week, TubLady,, i may check out your walk group soon, tying up projects at home then going to launch into a serious summer fitness routine, I am a slug so far. I have disappointed myself on my original weight loss goal, but am staying encouraged in that I am feeling some toning happening, and others are commenting, so I am chin up so far. Night all

Nice to hear from you Tisha. I live out in south Salem but don't go to the Court house. On Tues. and Thurs. I meet with a small group walking in the downtown mall. Normally we meet at 8:30am upstairs in front of Kohls.
I usually get there closer to 9am but then we all gather for coffee at 9:30. If you (or anyone) are up there at that time, please say something if you see me. I'll be the one packing oxygen.
Happy Friday,
Sandi

Hello fellow Salem Sparkers.
I don't always get to reply to the posts. I am working on getting better.
I know I schedule too much to do sometimes.
I am contributing as much as I can to the fitness , so Salem will fishes high on the boards.
But where is everyone else. I know we don't have a team leader, wish i could m but not possible. But it would still be nice to have more interaction with other 's from Salem.
I spend a lot of time at Battle Creek Courthouse Center. that's where I do most of my workouts.
Besides some bike riding and walking..
Sometimes the best way to reach me is a Spark e-mail.
Hope you are all having a great summer, (what summer we have had so far). But it will get better. It's been pretty good for bike riding. When it's not raining. Smile!!
Take care, Tisha

Hi Tublady,

I belong to the Battlecreek Courthouse also and walk often in that neighborhood. Just joined this website. Haven't been able to work out for a few weeks due to a sudden health issue. Can hardly wait to get back to it. Don't know if I will be up to going back to the Jazzercize class I was going to at first. Am hoping to be able to start walking soon!

Hi all

Does anyone else pay attention to the team leaderboards? This morning, Salem is at #70 on the cities board, behind Eugene and Portland. On the adjusted board, we're at #33, still behind Eugene and Portland. I admit to having a competitive streak in me. I would really like Salem to finish the month ahead of one or both of our biggest cities. :) I'm going to do my best to increase my activities to add points to OUR team. There's no other incentive than bragging rights, but that's fine with me.

would like that, really need to get motivated, have done ok so far but have noted that I feel a plateau hitting and really need to bump it up. not sure how to actually send an email from this site, but would like to see about some scheduling, I have a vacation coming mid June, Would like to start before then if possible, but at least by then. I check here most nights, so a note here will work too. Thanks Tisha, I feel more encouraged even now,

Hi, I'm Lorie, I actually live in Turner, just off Delaney, only 7 miles out of South Salem. I am interested in getting in on some of the outside walks also. I am not well motivated unless I can schedule events, I work full time in retail, and I live with my daughter and 3 young granddaughters.. I am an evening worker, so mornings would be great, maybe get me moving, I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis. but aside from waking up stiff in the lower back and legs most mornings, I try not to let it slow me down. Admittedly my excess weight does that to me, oh, and my years of ignoring the rise in pounds. I come from a family of comfort seekers, and an era of women who were not taught to care about themselves, so I am grasping health and wellness from a whole new space now. My spark page is titled 'My 50 for 50 challenge, and noone has to push me, I am pushing myself. I use a work provided pedometer to log daily steps and miles, and I have been checking out many varied menu and diet plans to discover my food weaknesses and face them. I will be 50 in July, really still hoping I can make it, but staying possitive even if I come up short. Wish me luck.

I have been so busy with my activities at the gym. My dog Titan has been getting short walks close to home. Once the weather gets better, we will go out an about. I'll stay in touch so maybe we can get together.
I exercise at the South Salem Courthouse.

Good for you Herbcat. I gained back the weight I had lost ---- I lost it before I gained it --- something like that.

No pets here winterphillips. I have to lose some weight before I can go out to walk because I am having an issue with my knees and legs. I don't know what the problem is, except being overweight. I hope you find a walking partner. Some here mall walk -- sounds like fun.

Well, I managed to gain "only" two lbs between Thanksgiving and New Years. That's real progress for me, compared to past years.

GERIART333, I lost the first bunch of weight by logging my food faithfully, and being as active as I could - not just walking, but gardening, putting extra effort into the housework, dancing as I vacuum, etc. At first, I logged what I ate every day. Then I ate what I logged every day, using the food diary as a planner. That worked best of all, when I stuck to it. I have to keep my sodium low, so I planned for that. I needed more fiber, and planned for that too. Likewise, keeping the saturated fat low - that helped get my LDL and triglycerides down.

And then I had hernia surgery and got out of the habit of meal planning... and gained back 8 lbs. So, here I go again. emoticon

Well, count me in as well. I came, I ate, I cringed!
So now on to more positive things!
I just watched the PBS show "Yoga for the Rest of Us - Back care basics" with Peggy Cappy. I do many of the moves already but this gave a clearer, gentler frame of reference. Sooooo, I went on half.com and ordered it. If I can't get to a yoga class often enough, this may just do the trick.
Anyhow, this is one positive start for the new year and the other is using daily the CDs I have for hypnosis.
Happy New Year to you all.

Hi Geriart -
You asked about walking tapes and I think Leslie Sansone has one on realage.com or maybe prevention.com. I believe she has several variations.

We meet in front of Kohls upstairs in the mall hallway on Tues. and Thurs. at 8:30am -ish. The general plan is to walk the mall - both sides - as a figure 8 and then do exercises for 5 minutes at 9am in the Macys (or is that maybe the Pennys one?) overpass and then walk some more and meet at 9:20 at the Macys walkway and do stretches before meeting for coffee in the food court at 9:30am. Jim usually leads us in the stretches and exercises. Some walk the whole time, some shorten it a bit. I usually walk a little but it depends on how my air/breath is doing that morning.

There don't seem to be any dedicated artists in the group but several do quilting, and take art classes and I do calligraphy. I hope this answers some of your concerns.

Yes, I collect inkwells and you never know where you will find them. Antique stores are good and sometimes estate/garage sales. I do calligraphy so it fits in as a special collectible for me. I also look for antique dip pens. Salem has the Salem Collectible Mart held once a month at the old armory near the fairgrounds. The next one is Jan. 9th and it opens at 9:30am. With all the dealers there someone is bound to have an inkwell hidden away!
Merry Christmas eve,
Sandi

Hi Inkywell,
What a cute name. How do you find inkwells?

What days do you meet at Kohls? I would like to join.
Walking and conversation makes the time fly by.
Wtrcolor is my previous name. Are there any Artists in the group?

Do you know of any walking tapes online?

Thanks for the invite Sandi. Maybe I'll try to join you sometime. Are the people in the group from this site? As you are most likely experiencing this next week is a bit rushed due to Christmas. My husband and I have been out of town this week so we did not get a tree yet. Would love to have people to walk with. I usually walk with my little dog. Sure hate the nasty weather though. Little Max doesn't like the rain much either.

I don't have any special exercise program - lol.
I do try to walk on Tues. and Thurs. at the downtown mall. There is a small group which has been meeting for several years and I go to meet them - even if it is just to have coffee. Anyone is welcome to join us. Most of the group meet at 8:30 or so upstairs in front of Kohls. The ages range from 50's to 80's. I usually come after about 9am. I am the only one carrying oxygen so if you see me there, please come up and introduce yourself to me. The more the merrier.
Isn't it great to see the sun this morning? I have a bit of SAD so any sunlight is welcome.
love, Sandi

Good morning Ladies. I am starting to find a good groove with food and exercise balance. Yesterday was a double workout so I will go lighter with one and a dog walk today. My little dog is starting to wander the house and get into trouble, he really needs a walk. The weather has been so cold, rainy, and windy this last week but I think I need to get him out no matter what today.

Inky, I really notice a difference when I log my food too. I am trying to log the days food early in the morning and then just stick to it. It is working for now. Thanks for the welcome. What kind of program are you following? Do you belong to a gym or workout on your own?
Thrilling Thursday all,
Lori

Hi. My name is Lori. I am trying to get back into healthy patterns once again. I have been logging food and exercise here at Sparkpeople for a year or two off and on. I lost 60 pounds over the last 3 years or so but about a year ago I just hit a wall and quit logging. As a result I have gained two-thirds of it back. I hate weighing, measuring, and counting but it is so effective so I am back to working at it and looking for a good support group to join. Great day all.

I am ashamed to say that I never exercise. I just don't like it, yet I know I need to. I am hoping that after I lose a few more pounds I will enjoy doing it a little bit more. My legs ache all of the time. This scared me into going on another diet. I have tried all of them. This time I am doing it myself, with the help of Sparkpeople. It is nice not to be paying someone else to tell me what I already know. emoticon
Sandi, it is nice to read your note and see your picture. I love knowing that others are striving for the same thing I am striving for. Best of luck. Karen

It is so nice to hear from the Salem ladies. Sometimes it is hard to realize that there are members/friends right here in Cherry City! I've been haphazard about logging all the food but that is about to change. After spending a month in AZ and gaining a bit, now is the time to begin again the tracking and following my hypnosis CDs. The exercise goes by the wayside, I'm afraid, due to my low energy and using oxygen 24/7.
Enough about me, I'd love to hear how the rest of you are doing.
All the best, Sandi

I have come to rely on Spark everyday. It has helped me keep track of what I eat, all my exercises and I love, when I have time to interact with others who are going through what I am, losing weight.
By entering my food plan for the day I can see just what my nutrition is for that day and if I am getting too much of say sodium, I can change what I plan to eat.
I have learned so much about what is good for me and what to or not eat in order to be healthy and fit.
I have always said this is not a diet that I start and stop, it's a life time change in how I approach food and exercise.
There's no going back. I don't plan on quitting Spark, or tracking my meals. That keeps me focused.
So far I have lost 125 lbs. I have about 60 to go.
Then it will be maintenance.
I have found that I really enjoy planning my meals and have come to like exercise. Who knew???

I see that you stay active outdoors. I seldom see it, as everything I like to do is inside; crocheting being #1. Reading, computer, TV, crafts, (beading.) I did I am using an "app" called LOSE IT. I really like the little program, as it counts calories for you, and records weight, and shows progress. I really like SPARKPEOPLE too. I am back for about the 10th time.

Is anyone interested in chatting with other Sparkers from Salem? I thought I'd float the idea and see if there are any takers. We seem to be such a silent team, and I'm not sure why that is.

What's new in your life? How are you doing with your weight loss /quest for health? What are you doing that's working - or not?

Please, step up to the mike and have your say!
