People like this drive me nuts! They are just compliment seekers. You have a few choices, you could say "it's clear you want me to tell you you look fabulous and I'm willing to do that. Just not forever. So, you look fabulous. You're skinny. You don't need to lose weight, happy now?". You could just say point blank "well clearly if you think you look fat you must think I am morbidly obese. How do you think that makes me feel"' or you could be REALLY naughty and say "well, why don't you do something about it? There is always gastric bypass surgery." or a classic " at least you have a pretty face".

I finally got myself in gear today and went walking. Brrr! It was cold, but I walked for almost 25 minutes. I've been finding excuses for not doing my cardio. Ugh! I'm on vacation until Friday so no excuses!

This is one of my Spark buddies that has an amazing story to tell. You might want to check with her for some advice. Also, have you read the book? You could check with some of the people who told their stories also. Good luck to you!

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone who has lost 75lbs or more would mind meeting somewhere for a walk or just to talk about how you did it, emotionally. What your journey has been. The ups and downs. Reason is I need to see that I can do this, others have and so can I. I need support! I'm getting off track and I don't want to backtrack. I know what to do to lose weight, but emotionally, I'm not dealing with it well and that is why I am off track and I have so far to go!!

Thanks!

You may certainly "buy" it. There has to be other lazy people. No? Just me? Well, that works too then. LOL

Personally, I think it depends on how you'll feel. Losing weight is for YOU! How would you feel if he wanted you to lose more than you wanted?

It's sort of the same when someone wants you to lose less than you want. They can want it, but it totally depends on what you want and how you'll feel, as it is your body!

Ok question...so I was originally planning to lose an additional 35 lbs before my wedding. My finace asked me to please NOT lose so much! Why? Cause curves are sexy!

So....opinions here? Should I keep the extra 10 I'm being asked not to shed? It doesn't put me into any risk health-wise it's just less than I originally intended.

I am a yoga instructor here in Portland and I would agree there are tons of studios to choose from. That being said, I would not recommend Bikram yoga for a beginner. You would probably be most comfortable in a hatha or gentle vinyasa style class. I know there are many studios around town that offer "yoga basics" or "beginner's yoga" classes as well. HTH

If you haven't gotten an answer bout weight limits, I'd call the Beaverton Sports Authority and talk to a bicycle technician named Terry. He's also a nationally certified cycling instructor, great guy. Of course, Schwinn's web site should have the info.

There are a lot of Cycle shops that could answer your question as well as the manufacture of the bike. The manufacture is on the website.

I'd kinda like to get back into bike-riding (FUN!), and my daughter does have a nice schwinn 10-speed here, but I'm worried with my weight I may ruin the frame/wheels/tires/etc....Anyone know the typical weight limits for bikes?

What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.

I am glad you found something works for you but I have found following SparkPeoples various steps, for free, has been better than any plan I have paid for. Have lost 30 lbs since Jan. 3rd and saved a lot of money in the process. All it really takes is to edcucate ourselves and learn to cook properly to acheive healthy goals.

Hi, All! Just wanted to let all you Portland, Oregon, area folks know that there is a Take Shape for Life Kickoff on Friday, January 8th, starting promptly at 7pm at the Embassy Suites Washington Square (lasts about an hour). It's a chance to hear about the program and meet some of us who have had success with it.

I can't believe how incredible this program is. I've already lost 45 pounds, and hubby has lost 52 (took us each about 3.5 months). We were getting asked about it all the time, so I became a health coach to share my success (and struggles) and help others with the program. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have individually, but wanted to make sure everyone knew about the kickoff event in case you want to check it out. Feel free to ask for me if you come. Of if you just want more info on Take Shape for Life, you can visit http://www.healthy4alifetime.tsfl.com.

I vote for Francis! I love that place!

Have you tried the Vita cafe, or Francis, both on Alberta? Both places have plenty of meat AND veg. options. Also, most Thai places can do any dish with chicken, beef, fish, or tofu. I like E-san (in N.PDX) and Thai noon, again on Alberta. All are moderately priced.

If you have the self disopline to not over-eat, I'd suggest a buffet-style place like North's, Hometown, or even Izzy's (nice salad bar). These places have varying daily menus, usually even a "prime-rib night". And the vegetarian options are pretty numerous as well. Dinners are around ten bucks. Hometown has really great service the times we've gone there, over in Mall 205.

I have a question for all of you out there in NE. My husband is a meat loving calorie fiend and I grew up vegetarian and am on a diet. Any restaurant suggestions on our side of the river for a place that will make us both happy without costing an arm and a leg?? I do eat meat on occasion now but I am not really a seafood fan.

One thing I've done lately is go take it to your nearest running track or hiking trail. It certainly gave me something else to do to break up the elliptical that I usually do, I was lucky there were bleachers and a huge hill that really got my heart pumping. Taking it outside showed me how my fitness has changed. I know I can do an hour on the elliptical but how does that translate in energy in my daily activities. I was able to keep up most the time with my 22 year old niece. That really gave me a pause and showed me I'm stronger and my fitness improved a great deal from 6 months ago!

Similar to Amber's suggestion, I have found that if I challenge myself to reach a certain number of strides/min on the elliptical for a song's length (my music is NECESSARY at the gym!) I can keep myself interested and focused. Same thing for the treadmill - just up the speed or incline (or both!) for a son'gs length. It works like Amber's interval idea.

I also make sure I keep my iPod loaded with new/different songs, so that I don't get bored with what I'm listening to.

I've certainly found that it can burn more calories. Especially because it helps me be able to work out for longer. Because I don't get burned out as quickly! Whatever you do, as long as it keeps you doing it, it's gonna work!

I get bored sometimes too. I either switch up machines (trying out one I've never done before, or just one I don't do often) Or I do intervals.

High intensity for a minute and then low intensity for a minute. repeating for as long as I want to work out. It keeps me aware of how my body is feeling, plus I get a rush of endorphins from keeping my heart pumping!

Hi all! I am new (okay, I started with SP in April for a whole 3 days, then quit, but I'm back) and ready to be healthy. I live in Gresham, and work part-time, and am worried that with the dreary weather and weird schedule (I do best when life is consistent, and part-time work doesn't lead to consistency) I will fall off the wagon quickly. Thanks for including me and thanks in advnace for your help!

you could try to have a face to face discussion with her without sounding like you're just telling her what to do. You can even put the ball in her court. Tell her your concerns, and she can decide if she would like to maintain the friendship or not. Either way, you'll know what kind of a friend she is and wants to be.

I am having a rough time with a friend that doesn't really act like a friend should. They are extremely skinny, eating disorder prone and always feels the need to talk about her weight and how much she needs to lose. This is discouraging to me because she doesn't see how she just fine. She could afford to putting on some weight. But its frustrating to weigh as much as I do and be so much overweight that I am and listen to her complain about weight. And not even in the "I need to get healthier" point of view. Its always about weighing less and looking better in her clothes. Help someone I need an objective point of view.

Do I end the friendship or discuss all of this face to face with her?

I also received the survey. I'm assuming they are going to try some new things out in a few cities and see what works!

Did you take the survey sent from SparkPeople about spreading the spark in Portland? I just sent mine off with a click of my mouse.

Anyone know anything about what SparkPeople has planned while focusing on Portland as a location to promote SparkPeople?

I'm kinda excited about turning more Portlanders/Oregonians on to SparkPeople and about doing it in the "real world", not just online.

Hi All,

I'm new, too. I live in Beaverton, near the Tualatin Hills Nature Park. I work in East Portland.

I love hiking, biking and I belong to 24-Hour Fitness in Beaverton. I'd like to be a buddy. It might be a challenge to meet-up given my monster commute to East Portland (?).

Isn't this a gorgeous day (Sunday, Sept. 7th? Walked in the Nature Park for 40 minutes and will be off to bike later. :}

Looking forward to reading the posts and providing support!

We use sugar water and than put food coloring in it so one it might help attract them and two we can see where it is going. We have a feeder up in front of our front window and one by our bathroom. Also if you have a fountain, especially one that has water coming up they like to use that to drink from. It will take them awhile to get used to having your feeder there, when they do especially if your the only one, you will be filling it sometimes once a week.
Hope this helps.

We still have hummingbirds around our house. We feed them and they are there year round. There are some hummingbirds that migrate, but there are alot of hummingbirds that don't migrate. They just started hitting our Fuscia (sp?) this week.
Have an awesome day! :)

It's not very hard at all, you walk down a good size hill to get to the bottom and then it's pretty much flat and obvs you have to walk up it at the end but it's really not very hard.

It's a beautiful walk, I hope you enjoy!

There's an entrance to a trail on the north end of Sellwood Park's parking lot. This wooded trail leads you around the east side of the Oaks Bottom to a paved path that ends at another parking lot off Milwaukie Ave. The round trip is approximately three miles. It's a nice hike.

has anyone ever hiked/walked whatever you can do at Oaks Bottom??? I am not much of a hiker anymore but really wanted to go here if it's not too difficult.

Hello everyone! I posted some time ago a question about which gym to join since I was planning to move to Portland. Most of you said it would depend on where in Portland I was living. Well we have finally moved and we are living in NE Portland. On 66th. Where is the best place to workout?

Oh, I don't drive so I walk to the Max everyday twice a day which is about 10 mins away from my house and then from the max to work is about a 5 min walk. And I do take the stairs instead of the elevator. So I do get in a little bit of exercise in everyday. Thanks for the advice!!! emoticon

Also, don't be too hard on yourself if you can't make it out. Sometimes is better than never. You can also do small things like parking farther away from doors, taking the stairs instead of the elevator. I'm not sure what your job is, but if you happen to sit at a desk, you can also do things like pacing while on a phone call instead of just sitting there. Or doing squats or lunges next to your desk. I know that isn't always possible though. =)

Ugh ! That is hard to find the energy and motivation after a long day at work. My husband goes to the gym with me in the evenings after he works. We have a pretty good routine of him coming home, relaxing, eating a healthy snack. Then we go to the gym together, eating dinner a bit later than other people do.

Is there someone who you can work out with who can keep you motivated? If not, you might need to just kick yourself in the butt for awhile until working out after work becomes a habit.

I need help guys!!! I can't seem to stay motivated when I get home from work. I am extremely tired when I get home. Yesterday I got home around 7pm cooked dinner ate and I was in bed by 8:30pm. That is rare for me. I do walk from the max to home after work and that is about a mile, so I guess that is my evening work out. But I don't find the energy to do crunches or squats or anything like that when I get home. Any ideas???? emoticon

Mary S Young park in West Linn has beautiful, well maintained trails on varying terrain, there are a few ravines, and you can go along the river. Its in a forest setting and is really beautiful. Leashes are required for dogs on the trails, but there is also a large off-leash area for dogs, so best of both worlds :-)

Greenway Park (near Washington Square) has lots of walking trails. I walked 30 minutes tonight and didn't actually finish walking on the trail I was on.

They also have exercise equipment. However, the downside: because it's in a business park and behind a lot of homes and apartments, there are NO bathrooms. :(

My husband seems to think so. :) Just a warning, different discs do different things, and they get lost, so be prepared to buy more...and the accessories that go with it. :)

My husband just bought one of those disc things. I totally don't understand it, but he's excited. So I guess it's a good thing!

Orchards Park (near Tanasbourne) has a nice walking trail. I typically do it in 15-20 minutes, including doing three laps around the circle. Just watch out for the disc golfers.

And btw, that's a good form of exercise too. My husband's lost weight and has much fewer back problems since taking up the sport. :)

Hi! I just drove by that location last night to check it out. We (friend and I) have been going to the Hillsboro location but are looking at trying the Aloha location next week.

Dang, I just wish I could run at all LOL. I will get there though....It's mainly my tummy, my insides killing me, not so much not being able to actually run or jog. I'll get it figured out though :-)

Thanks from me too for the ideas...I never thought about jogging/walking near the zoo. I think my kids and husband would love that too!

Hoyt Arboretum is Zoo adjacent, and there are TONS of trails. If you stop at the Hoyt visitor center, you can get a trail map that has a 4-mile loop.

I run in Washington Park 2-3 days/week, and it's just beautiful - especially now with all the trees blooming.

Thanks, Angela! I've been wanting to visit the zoo anyway, so there's another great reason :D

And I agree with you ... I also find I workout longer when I'm outside.
