I actually used to teach at Cascade a while back. I think their synergy is a precoreographed program that they pay to use in their clubs. Kinda of the same things as body Pump and body step. I have always liked work/video's done by karen Voigt and I like stott pilates too. Go on the website for the magazine Yoga journal and they might have some recommended videos that combine the two styles. Now if you decided that you really wanted to kick it into high gear and basically tell those knees to be happy or else, you could always try boot camp classes, they will really get the hips.... emoticon

Well, I've done something in a class called "Synergy" which is a combo of Yoga and Pilates. I really like it a lot but had to quit 'cuz of money considerations. I've tried to find a video that has something like that. The name "Synergy", I think, belongs to Cascade Athletic Clubs because I couldn't find anything under that name.

Thanks for the advice about Denise Austin videos. it's true, some workout videos aren't very well put together.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

Oh the hips....

Have you tried pilates?? It works that whole area and there are modifications to make it as hard or not hard as you like. If you do get a video-don't get Denise Austin for pilates, I haven't seen a good review yet

Any advice out there for hips (65 year old hips!). I know, complex body part and all that but I'm just wondering if anyone else has had problems and what they do about them. I am concerned that I am stretching too hard or maybe the wrong way. I've been doing Rodney Yee's older "Yoga for Flexibility" video and though I can do it pretty darn good for an old lady I still wonder if it's the right thing for me. It has several positions at the end that really stretch the hip area.

HA! I stretch like crazy before and after running/jogging. I do special knee strengthening exercises and all this DOES help for sure but doesn't take all the discomfort away. Maybe there's an age difference here--I'm 65, that's MY excuse. If you are 65 then you deserve a clobbering. If you are younger I'll let it go!

Ha! Guess I get a clobbering! There is one advantage and one advantage only to having legs like an elephant, knees and everything else up to the hips are strong as an ox! I'm very cautious when I jog, of course, and ALWAYS stretch, stretch, stretch and learn how to stretch right if nobody has ever actually show you HOW. I've never had the slightest excuse from my knees not to run. Happy knees indeed. emoticon I can find plenty of other excuses though.

Why is it we have knee problems. I remember my mother being embarrassed over what she called knobby knees (she was a tiny lady). Me, I have knees that are half again the size of my calves.

I'll clobber the first person that admits to it!

I used to love running, still kinda do except that my knee get's really angry sometimes. I found an eliptical at the gym that actually kinda feels like running, so I do that or I hop on the treadmill(usually when it's raining) and walk at a mod-fast pace and play with the incline a lot. Swimming is an awsome thing too.

So what is it with all the knee's, does anybody actually have a couple that are happy?

I've been thinking about swimming too. Gotta make a call to our local pool and find out what they disinfect it with and what the hours are for public laps. I hate chlorine--a lot of pools are switching over to salt which isn't so irritating...or toxic.

Know what you mean a about knees. I like to run but if I do it too many times my knees give me problems.

You people go ahead and run. I think that is good. I have a knee injury yrs ago and running just does it in. I am going to take up swimming. Although I walk 3 to 4 mi a day, it is on paved ground and very few hills.
