Hamsa0908 this is great! I hope you get good responses. You may want to [re]post this in the What's Happening Portland?? - Events thread, or post it as a new fresh top post so the announcement for a new post will go out to team members.
CBAILEYC, I don't want to start a MeetUp group but would be happy to lead a "Walk There!" walk next Wednesday June 29th at 9AM. The "4T - Trail, Tram, Trolley & Train" - MODIFIED.
This walk/hike starts & ends at the Oregon Zoo MAX Station at 4001 SW Canyon Rd. in PDX. I live in the Pearl & will start from the Old Town/Chinatown MAX Station @ 8:38am & will arrive @ the Washington Park MAX Station @ 8:56am. I will not be returning to the Zoo/start point as I live downtown, once we get off the Tram we will catch the Streetcar to 10th & Alder, the group will take the MAX train back to the Zoo & I will stay downtown.
The book lists the total mileage at 3.95 miles, 8342 steps, 3 out of 5 difficulty. I am out of shape. We will be walking at a very moderate pace, 1.5-2 MPH. Figure 2-3 hours. We will leave no walker/hiker behind.
Starting at 9am... figure 2-3 hours for the walk/hike... you'll be ending at noon-ish. For those of you returning to the Zoo, perhaps you'd like to pack a lunch & have lunch together? Anybody else starting & ending w/ me at the Old Town/Chinatown MAX - we can head to the waterfront, sit in the grass, & eat whatever snacks/lunch we've packed.
As I am leading this Walk... I assume no liability for your safety getting to the trailhead or on the trail, NO walkers/hikers under the age of 18, NO dogs.
Weather forecast: high of 68, 40% chance of showers. Dress appropriately. I never hike without the Ten Essentials, you shouldn't either.

No, we don't have an active meet up thread on our discussion boards. As Gaye mentioned, we do try to keep the Events thread updated (although admittedly, it's been a while since I've contributed) and the events don't always have to do with training or competing. They're usually more about simply being active, together, and just happen to happen around a race - which is what it sounds like you're interested in as well.
More active people contributing to the boards would be GREAT! I'm glad to hear that you're interested in helping make that happen. I've been thinking lately that we need to do a Spark Portland meet up soon! Would you like to help organize a meet-up, that doesn't involve a race or competitive event?
GAYEMC Thanks for the info but it's not what I'm looking for. I have no desire to race/compete/train. I'm looking for a local buddy to walk/hike/bike with 2-3x/wk and was hoping that this group had some weekly events to join that weren't race/competition/training but I haven't found anything.
There's some sticky topics in the "What's Happening Portland" forum. Maybe you can find something there or maybe you can post something that is happening. I would join more meet-ups if I didn't live so far out of Portland. I have been to a couple of them and it was really fun. I live out on the East side clear out by Sandy and Mt. Hood area
Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when its a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, theyre terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

I've noticed a lot of posts directing SparkPeople members to MeetUp.com. Specifically, those looking for SparkBuddies to exercise with. I'm wondering why this group, SparkPortland, doesn't have a local activity forum where weekly walks/hikes/bike rides are posted. ???
