Thanks NWCountryDancer for the group option. I signed up tonight joining the 3010 group. It sounds like you will have the packets mailed to you. We'll have to hook up on race day or sometime before.

Amy that's awesome! I've applied to volunteer for the event this year. Bill and I ran the 5K last year, and it was quite the experience.
emoticon

Has anyone found any local 5K events in the month of January? I don't have anything scheduled until February, but feel like I should DO something this month, even if I'm still 'getting ready to race' LOL
emoticon

I've looked at Race for the Roses, but I'll be back East at that time, meeting up with SparkPeoples at the Just a Short Run on March 30 for an 8-miler, hopefully with my sister.

Chas, there's a thread below this one about Turkey Trots, but I don't recall who said they were doing what.

I'm doing the Hot Buttered Run in Vancouver, the Sunday after Thanksgiving. And I signed up for the SparkPeople Trick-or-Treat 5K this week - I better get moving soon!

Anyone thinking of doing the Turkey Trot in Sherwood on Thanksgiving? They are doing a 5k walk/run and a 10k run.

I had a great run at the Girlfriends Half Marathon in Vancouver today. I PR'd - it was a lot less hilly than my previous HM. Beat my last time by about 4 minutes. How did the others do? I had so much fun hanging out at the 13 mile marker after the race and getting people to run uphill for one block to get to the finish. I would recommend it as one of the great all-women half marathons in our area. I didn't stay for the massages, (they had at least 15 LMT's working their behinds off), but the chocolates were great and the t-shirt and medal were super cute. It was a well-managed race. Still want to do the Hippie Chick next year, though!

Gaye, I'm not doing it this year but I've done the run like hell 10k before. It's nice and flat, and there is a nice dry place at the World Trade Center to hang out before/after the race. If it does rain, bring some dry shoes and socks to change into after the race. Walking around with wet socks is the worst! I was supposed to do the 5k, but my son decided he wasn't ready for his first 5k so we're postponing it til a November race. No worries for me since it's a week after my half marathon!

Speaking of which, anyone else doing the Girlfriends Half in Vancouver this Sunday? I know there was at least one person in this group. Let me know if you want to try to meet up. I'm carpooling with a friend and am going to try to be at the start by 8. And everyone else, please cross your fingers for a dry day! I'll probably pack a change of clothes and shoes anyway.

Zombie Apocalypse Run
nomadadventureseries.com
5K Trail Run, Saturday October 29
So you have ran a 5k before? That's nice. Maybe you've even qualified for the Boston Marathon. Cool story. But, how do you think you would fare with someone chasing you? What if that someone belongs to the partisan of the living undead? If you think you have what it takes to master your fear, control your adrenaline, and survive the horror- all while maintaining clean underwear, then come prove it at the Zombie Apocalypse 5k Trail Run.

You can elect to be a Survivor or a Zombie!

Ok, count me in for both the HBR and Jingle Bell. I'm traveling next week for work, but I'll get signed up when I get back.
Have a great week!

Christy, we'll have to coordinate a 'heya' for before or after the Girlfriends. There's quite a few other Sparkers running it as well.

I've promised the hubby that I'd ease off of running for November and December, but I don't suppose that has to mean I can't do any 5Ks. Hmm....
emoticon
I think I'm going to have to go with the Hot Buttered Run 5K! That 'no rushing home' clinched it for me! LOL It also starts at a reasonable time - 10 a.m. is good!

Thoppes, the Jingle Bell run was my very first ever 5K last year. I think I'll do it again to see how much (hopefully) I've improved over the year! I had a lot of fun dressing up as an Elf last year, think I still have my jingle bells even!

I'm in!

I thought about the Run Like Hell 5K but I've got so much going on between now and then that I'm going to pass (this year). I also thought about the Zoo Turkey Trot but now I'm thinking the Hot Buttered Run sounds better!

I'm doing the Girlfriends Half in Vancouver on 10/16, Run Like Hell 5k with my son on 10/23, then deciding between the Turkey Trot at the Zoo, the Tigard Turkeython, or the Hot Buttered Rum Run in Vancouver. The first 2 are on Thanksgiving morning, and the last is on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I've done the Turkey Trot at the Zoo for several years now, but last year the weather was not nice at all. Imaging running down a steep slope with hundreds of other people over BLACK ICE! I think I might be over running that darn hill. The Tigard race is closer to home (I'm in far SW), but the Hot Buttered Rum Run is later in the weekend, no rushing to get home, dressed, make stuff for a family dinner, etc. Decisions, decisions.

Here are the links to the three Thanksgiving races I'm deciding between:
www.orrc.net/races/turkey_trot/turke
y_
tba.htm

www.uberthons.com/turkeythontigard
energyeventsllc.com/hotbutteredrun/

Anyone else doing a race that weekend? Anyone want to help me decide?

Hi Gals! I was so busy on Saturday that I didn't get your message until I was on the way to OSF to get on the shuttle. I knew I wouldn't be able to run the whole thing but wanted to finish in 1:15:00...I was finished in 1:19:40 in 2,167 place! Considering I walked way more than I ran...I feel pretty good about it! I had fun and will definitely keep running. The best part was having my husband tell me as soon as I crossed the finish line how proud he was of me.

I want to do the Jingle Bell 5K the first weekend of December. Any takers?

I am so totally sorry - I completely dropped the ball on organizing for the Pints to Pasta. Please forgive me, I've been so wrapped up with my family here (they leave this evening, whew!)

Gaye found me before the start, and then we filtered apart once the race started. I finished in 85 minutes, 2 min. slower than my 10K PR, but had a good time regardless. My mom and my daughter (along with Bill) were waiting for me at the finish line and that was a first - and very very nice.

Race for the Cure is coming up next weekend. If I promise to be better organized this time LOL shall we try again?

I didn't check here early enough! Had a great times at Pints to Pasta today. I beat last year's time by 3 minutes. Not as impressive as it sounds as I had a cold that year, but still very good. How'd everyone else do? Did you have fun? What's next for you?

I'm ready Thoppes. I think Candy might have the best idea (I'm not much of a party planner) but I've done the race before and I know we can meet before and take the bus over together and/or meet after, a little harder with everyone at different paces. But they do have a fun party at the end with food and beer which would be nice to sit and get to know each other for a bit. Don't forget early packet pick up is tomorrow.
So who all will be there?

Candy

Add your name to the list and let's see if we can all get together.

Gaye is right - I've signed up for Pints to Pasta as well. It would be fabulous to meet up with you, and anyone else who wants to join in! We can shoot for meeting at the starting line, or maybe at the shuttles.

I hear you about signing up for more events to keep yourself motivated! I've been very bad lately and need to get my rear moving soon to even be ready for PTP!

Hi Thoppes and welcome to Spark People and the Portland team. I'm a walker that does a little bit of running and I just signed up for Pints to Pasta also. I did it 2 years ago and it was a fun, downhill/flat easy and pretty course. I'd love to meet up with you before/after the race. I think Candy (cbailey) is also doing it. I also did the Run Like Hell 10K which was also fun.

You might also want to check out the Hood to Coast team. There were 2 Spark teams running this last weekend and it was great. About half were local runners/volunteers and the other half from around the country and Canada. Here's the link.

Hi - I'm a new Sparker and new to running. I signed up for the Pints to Pasta on 9/11 to get myself moving. Up until then it's been very hit or miss (mostly miss). I won't be able to run the entire thing, but I've already seen a big improvement since I signed up 1st of August. I'd love to meet some fellow SparkPeople that are participating in this event!

I'm also considering signing up for the Run Like Hell event to keep me motivated.

My second as well, my very first ever half was the Foot Traffic Flat on July 4. I got to see Gaye there! emoticon It was awesome! It would be just as neat to meet up with you for the PtP or the Girlfriends if you'd like!

I'll have to think about the Run like Hell - I promised Bill that I'd ease up on running/training after the Girlfriends because it really has become all-consuming.

Oh! Check out the thread down in the What's Happening Portland section about the Family Fun 10K walk at the Portland Marathon. Yet another opportunity to hopefully meet up with lots of other Sparkers!

Christy, I did the Run Like Hell 10K 2 years ago and had a blast. That's also where I met zmoney who is the team leader for Spark's Coasties and Ghosties. Spark has 2 teams this year, whoohoo!

I would love to try and meet up with you before a race. It's so great meeting other Sparkers!

I haven't done the Girlfriends Half before, but it comes highly recommended by a neighbor who has walked it & volunteered for it. It will be my second half this year.

Another race I'd recommend is Run Like Hell, which is a Halloween race where many people dress in costumes. They have a half marathon, a 10k, a 5k and a kids half mile run. I've done this race several times & it's always fun. It's the weekend after the Girlfriends Half, but I'm going to be running the 5k with my son. He's doing his first 5k race. Hopefully I can keep up with him! Here's the link-

Christy, thanks for the recommendation! I haven't done PtP before, so I'm looking forward to it. I believe Gaye is also signed up, and possibly a few friends from work as well. Should be a good time!

I see you're also doing the Girlfriends Half in October. Me too! I'm very excited for it, and it'll be my first time running it as well. Have you been before?

I love Pints to Pasta. I've been doing that race for years - one of my favorite 10ks in the city. I'm signed up with a few of my friends for this year's race. If you've never done it before, it's a beautiful course. The first mile is downhill, then after you cross the Broadway Bridge it's mostly flat on paths along the river (Waterfront Park to the south waterfront). And the organizer always puts on a great, well-organized race.

Just received a notice about the Pints to Pasta 10K, on Sunday, September 11.

"Pints to Pasta 10K:

Sign up to run or walk this beautiful award winning downtown 10K. Pints to Pasta highlights our city like no other event in Portland and we want you to join us. Park at The Old Spaghetti Factory and ride the free shuttle to adidas Headquarters on N. Greeley for the start of the race. Enjoy this downhill start to the famous Widmer Brothers Brewery, across the Willamette River, along the river front pathway finishing at The Old Spaghetti Factory. After your hard work treat yourself to complimentary pasta, salad, and bread, but don't forget the delicious Widmer Beer. Enjoy live entertainment on the shores of the Willamette River with your fellow runners and walkers. Pints to Pasta donates a portion of it's proceeds to The Raphael House of Portland and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's TEAM IN TRAINING. A huge thanks to adidas, Widmer, The Old Spaghetti Factory and Portland Running Company for making this event happen."

I'm a roll here people! LOL

The Portland Marathon is taking place October 9. I've started a thread down in the 'What's happening, Portland?' forum of the board about organizing a group walk for the Family Fun 10K Walk and Spark meet-up.

For you speedsters out there, there's yet another new option!

This is for anyone who can complete a 10K in under an hour. The Dash is limited to just 250 people, so if you're interested, you should register soon!

OK, it's taking me awhile to get this posted, but there's still plenty of time to register. This is a great little race, nice course and very walker friendly. Several years ago this was my first race (I walked) and that what inspired me to keep it up. Also, it was my first meeting of Spark friends. There were quite a number of us (there's a pic on my photo page) and we had a great time meeting each other. Some of us are still buddies to this day.

The fee is pretty nominal and it's for a great cause. Several of us have signed up for it already and it would be nice to have another huge Spark turn out. Please think about joining us, and let us know if you are. Down the road we'll come up with a meeting place and time.

I'm running 5 with the Tribe this weekend, and hoping my leg holds up and responds well.

I'm running the Foot Traffic Flat Half Marathon (OMG!!!!) on July 4.

I have a Foot Traffic Flat 5K entry available if someone would like it. I signed up for the 5K initially, but then Aaron talked me into doing the Half!

Also, there's this in October!

I'm so sorry I missed Run for the Dove. Not paying enough attention to dates.

So I just signed up for Sweat It Up 5K on Saturday 6/25 starting at Irving Park. This is a non competitive event but I needed an reason to get up early.

I also signed up for the Foot Traffic Flat 5K at Sauvies Island on July 4th.

Anyone else attending either of these?

Great thread! I'll add in those things I hear about as I hear about them.

To that end...
I'm signed up for the Friar Trot 5K this Saturday in Sherwood. The Galloway tribe is running it as a group.

Of course, the Starlight Run, June 4.

Then June 12 there's the Run for the love of Dove, to benefit Dove Lewis.

I can't wait to go slogging through the mud with Chas and hopefully others!

Knowing me, I will probably join in on the September event. Candy got me stomping around in mud for 6 miles in June, so this should be a peice of cake in comparison.

So sorry this is a late entry but you can register at the race in the morning. I did this last year and it's a nice scenic short route.

Chaz, the Mayor's Walk is the last 6 miles of the Marathon. It starts over in north PDX and is flat along the river ridge (can't remember what that neighborhood is called) and then goes down hill along Interstate. It's a pretty easy course and as it's considered a walk, you could run/walk whatever. It's pretty amazing when you see the marathoners passing you at the walk start and they have already run 20 miles.

It seems like there are a number of us that participate in running/walking race events around town and like to meet up with other sparkers at these so I thought I would start a thread so we could all post in one place upcomming races and who will be where.

I just got the email that registration is open for this one. I did it last year and it was fun. Fast and downhill. I will be signing up.
