It is good to eat something light before a workout, l drink a protien drink or a few apple slices before (never something like pancakes though), and it always seems to help. I feel pretty icky and sluggish if I have nothing.
From most of my readings of various articles is is best to eat something about 2 yours before a workout and within 2 hours after a workout. If I do not eat before a workout I find it more difficult to push through a session.

It really depends on what works for you. I know some people's stomachs can't handle eating right away, so they work out first. Personally, I have zero energy and my stomach GROWLS if I don't eat something right away. You can experiment with not eating, eating a little, and eating a lot and see which one works best for your system and happiness!
