When I started SparkPeople 1 yr ago I thought the same thing. Spark started me out at 2800+ calories. But Spark give you a range mine currently is 1725-2800. I eat according to how I exercise. No exercise for the day I eat at the low end. A lot of exercise I eat at the top end of the scale. If a person eats at their BMR with a little exercise will lose weight.
Spark has a BMR Calculator Formula but I find this one very close and all you do is plug in a few number. www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculat
