Yeah, I've looked into that and we don't have one near me that has the hours compatible with my schedule, which is why I joined my gym in the first place! But it is an excellent suggestion for those who can.

Okay, so I went to the Gym. I did feel conspicuous there but I worked on the recumbent bike and did some upper body weights. If it were warmer I'd consider swimming, I just hate to get cold! I'm a wuss! Sometimes I think I should go to a less glamorous Gym ( I go to LA fitness) but I'd hate to pay another initiation fee! ( Ok, so now you know I am a wuss AND a cheapskate!)
I joined Bally's out in Beaverton and they were super nice. They did a walk through when I first joined and showed the machines off. I would ask people about that.
Something else you may want to consider is that you are super self conscious right now. It feels like everyone is staring at you. I've noticed this but I also know that it is not all the way true. Yeah, some people will look at you, but most of the people there are super nice.
Another thing to do is as you see people on a machine that you don't know anything about, go ASK them about it. Just let them know that you don't know how to use the machine and that you were hoping they could show you. They respect the fact that you are trying to lose weight and for the most part are more then happy to help out. Plus, you may find yourself a workout buddy or two which could also help motivate you even more.
I have an hourglass figure, unfortunately it holds 8 hours instead of just 1.

Did you go?? When I started back at the gym, I took my time and read all the machines to figure out how to use them!!! I finally jsut didn't care what anyone else thought, because I am doing this for me, and I'll be the healthy one!! (maybe never skinny again, but healthy!!! besides I WAS skinny and NOT healthy!)
So who should I be talking to that you know who needs my skills? I know how you feel. The first couple times I went to the gym, I just walked passed all the machines and headed straight to my comfort area...the treadmills. Finally after a few months of just doing the treadmill, I got bored and set up an appointment with a trainer. I think our gym (Mt. Hood Athletic Club) offered a free one time consult with a trainer, so I really paid attention and now I feel so much more comfortable using the machines.
I also switched gyms. We were members of LA Fitness, but it seemed like most people in that gym were younger and already fit. I like my new gym much better. More family friendly too.
I know you can do this. No one knows the machines when they first go to the gym. You can always ask one of the trainers to see if they can show you how to work a couple of the machines. Usually they will help and not charge a fee. All you can do is ask and all they can say is no. Good luck.

I was really intimidated by LA Fitness when I went to one. It seemed like the "pretty people" gym. My husband and I settled on what was at the time Gold's Gym (they then became an Olympic gym)
So I can certainly understand your embarrassment. I still get looks at my gym, even though the people there are much more likely to look like me. I say it is more embarrassing to stay fat and not do anything about it then to just go and smile at anyone giving you funny looks! That's what I do =)
MUSCLE DOES NOT WEIGH MORE THAN FAT 5 lbs = 5 lbs
5 lbs of muscle simply takes up less space than 5 lbs of fat!
If nothing tasted as good as being thin felt, no one would ever get fat!
I have membership in LA Fitness Gym. I haven't gone in months but I keep paying that darn fee. Now that I have lost some significant pounds I want to incorporate excercise more. Here is my embarassment: I'd love to have someone demo stuff for me but I don't want to have to "buy" the time of a trainer. I'm not being cheap, I'm simply stretched too thin money-wise these days.
My other embarassment is while I am very proud of my weight loss, I still pretty darn fat. I can't get off the floor without help! I guess I just need to suck it up and go. Please encourage me anyway you can to help me get brave and go to that darn gym!
