Sun Flower market carries spelt flour and according to Trader Joe's website they also carry spelt flour.

NMgrl1, I totally agree with your statement regarding Albuquerque drivers...but that's a different thread! Anyway, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having issues with the drivers out here!

Like you, I hate to drive into Albuquerque. My best friend was in the hospital and I went to visit him every day for 10 days. I find that if you can make your trip between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. the traffic is a lot better. Or Sunday.

I haven't had time to go and look for. I am going to check whole foods, and sunflower. If I cant find it I guess I will look for it online. Driving in Alb. makes my anxiety issues come to a full head.

I have used spelt flour for years in my multigrain bread. I get it at La Montanita in Nob Hill. My favorite use for it alone is in "Plain Muffins", a recipe in my Mom's old Betty Crocker cookbook. They have a beautiful light brown color and rich grainy taste. I eat them with no butter and a little marmalade! Store the flour in your fridge or freezer, so it keeps its fresh taste.

I've never bought it but I'm pretty sure that I've seen it for sale at Whole Foods. I'd be interested in knowing about any experiences that anyone has had using it because I need to try to avoid gluten for a while.

I know I've bought some at the North Valley la Mantanita. I haven't checked at teh Nob Hill one lately. But they have every grain/flour imaginable there.

Look for La Montaņita in Nob Hill area, as well as Sunflower Market (I was just there and didn't see it, but then again, wasn't looking for it...) and Whole Foods should carry it as well. Good luck on your search, and let us know how the recipes turn out. I wouldn't mind trying something new and different as far as grains go.

They have it in the bulk food bin at La Montanita. Spelt is a non-gluten grain and I think it originated in teh Middle East.

I've never used it. I suspect any of the health food type stores would have it (Sunflower Farmers Market, Whole Foods, etc.)I googled it. Less gluten, makes it tricky to use in food that calls for 100% whole wheat. Lots of descriptions and some info on cooking with it. Nutty flavor it says. Who knows!

Hi y'all, my mom was telling me about something called spelt flour. I guess it is an ancient grain used in cooking that is making a big comeback. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it like, where to buy it, how is different as far as texture in bread and stuff. I am thinking about making my own stuff rather than buying it. Any info would be helpful. Thanks. emoticon
