I am not the biggest fan of Bally's, but Work Out World and Planet Fitness I have either been to or heard good things about.

As for bike/walking routes, there is a nice one along the Charles River I know it goes as far as Waltham since that is where I used to live, and I walked all the way to the other end of Watertown.

I don't know about Bally's but Planet Fitness is a pretty popular alternative. Their membership is just 10 a month.

Welcome to the area! You'd probably enjoy the Minuteman Bikeway (www.minutemanbikeway.org), a rail-trail from the Alewife T station in Cambridge, through Arlington and Lexington, out to Bedford. Also check out The Trustees of Reservations (www.thetrustees.org) for places to visit, hike, etc.

There's a pretty easy trail that runs through Wellesley that is right by my work. Other than that, there's this cool site that has a list of all of the trails and parks in different areas. Try googling for it. Or I can see if my husband or I have it book marked when I get home.

Well, you are not very far from Charles river. Depending on where in Newton you are. From Watertown square you can go all the way into Boston, museum of science and back. There are a couple of parking lots in the area I meet at teh marsh post with a running group This link has the parking info.www.clydesdale.org/marshpost/parking.html

This is the classic map for the charles river. bostonrunner.com/charles.htm
I don't know Newton as well, but can ask some folks. I will let you know if I get some info.
Here is a nice site with path information. www.newtonconservators.org/trips.htm
There is a bally in Watertown, which is right next door.
best of luck and welcome!

I Just moved to Newton MA. I am looking for bike trails in the area or some safe bike routes around. Also How are the Bally total fitness' in the area the one back in CT was really starting to get a little seedy but I have had the membership for so long I only pay 8 bucks a month and at that price I can't afford to go anywhere else.
