Today is my birthday and I'm on vacation for over a week. We will be heading for St. Simons
beach in Savannah for lots of rest, relaxation & lots of fun, fun, fun.

A Farewell to CAN'T
This goodbye does not make me sad. I will not miss you. I have discovered what it feels like to do the unthinkable. The hard. The long. The challenging. You have no business here anymore. From now on, difficult will seem doable. I will see the impossible as simply not-yet-conquered. Farewell, Can't. You will haunt me never again. Hello, Can. Welcome to my world.

I arrived back home this afternoon in the pouring rain, feeling relaxed and peaceful. It was a good experience for my mind. Weigh-in is tomorrow morning, I know I did pretty good on staying healthy, but I'm nervous anyway.

A couple of things I learned: the closest exercise studio was happy to sell me a one-week membership for $20, so I was able to do okay with my fitness routine. For most of my time I was staying in a place with a kitchen, so I was in control of my food. When I did go out, I explained to the server what my limitations are and what I was looking for. They were all very cooperative and concerned with helping me get what I needed. When the servers didn't know what the ingredients were, they went to ask the cook or, in one case, sent over the manager to be sure I got accurate information. Nobody acted like I was too much trouble, and I didn't feel at all like a nuisance -- I felt taken care of.

The easiest kinds of restaurants to get healthy food: seafood and Asian, just watch out for the fried stuff. Otherwise, lots of grilled options, lots of vegetables. I also made sure I had healthy food in the car so I could nibble, snack, and treat myself without going through the drive-thru or shopping at the convenience store.

Not so thrilled to be going back to work so soon, but my cat is happy to see me!

Having fun this summer? Traveling or staying in town? How do you manage keeping up with your activity and eating healthy while still enjoying the best that the place and season have to offer?

I will admit to a few moments of discouragement. The place I'm staying has a fitness center, but no recumbent bike, my favorite (other than swimming) for getting my cardio without setting off alarms in my knees. There are some weights, but the only machine is a bow-flex. The nice lady from the front desk said, "I think this goes like that," and I said I thought I'd look for more instruction. Don't want to play around with those machines! There are a couple of clubs near-by -- maybe I can get a day- or week-pass.
Then I headed for the nearby park to check out hiking trails. It was surprisingly hard to get info on line. The map by the parking lot was so faded that it was almost unreadable, but there were some info sheets about the different areas. Just as I was about to get back in my car I saw the Notice: "Due to drought and severe weather conditions ... hiking is prohibited ... No one may enter a forest trail ... until further notice." Well. I guess that's that. There are some pleasant roads around so I can still walk, but it's not the same. I've been doing museums, but it's not exactly aerobic. Not that the weather is exactly encouraging. Can you believe NO is one of the coolest spots in the country?
