New Orleans is this team quiet because we're all so busy living healthy lifestyles? Don't forget to remain healthy as festival season approaches. I know I enjoyed some not so healthy delicacies at the crawfish festival this past weekend

I'm here! The good food around here is HORRIBLE for reaching your goals. I say everything in moderation. I've tried to abstain completely from the unhealthy stuff and I eventually gave up my diet completely. Now I try to make more good choices than bad but if I go to a restaurant and want fried shrimp poboy, or dessert I'll have it. Not daily, not even weekly but I'll treat myself sometimes. On the other days, cook your own delicious healthy meals and exercise.

I am here. Looking for others to encourage and get encouragement from when I just want to eat something bad. And let's face it, a lot of the good food here is bad. LOL

Ive been doing Leslie Sansone walk the pounds away dvd. The dvd has 1-4 mile workouts. Ive also tried some of the SP videos. Try braking up your workouts. Instead of 1 hr at a time maybe 2- 30mins. might work. GOOD LUCK!

Hi team, I need HELP! I had my second child in September and Im working full time and Im finding it hard to find time to exercise and my body shows it. I really want to tone up but waking up at 530 and getting home at 530, homework, nursing, cooking etc leaves little time to exercise. I used to spend 2 hours in the gym 3X/week which was effective for me but I dont have that kind of time. Anyone know of effective 20-30 minute workouts. I find that longer workouts are most effective for me.

Anyone try Pure Barre? HELP!!!

Hello everyone ... I have recently moved to the Houma area. I would love to have a work out buddy to help keep me motivated with working out. I was working out at least 5x a week, but I injured my right knee and have been trying to keep up with light work outs, but its hard when the knee is so painful. I have a goal of losing at least 100 lbs. I have lost a total of 8lbs..only 92 more pounds to go. Lets GEAUX!

A Farewell to CAN'T
This goodbye does not make me sad. I will not miss you. I have discovered what it feels like to do the unthinkable. The hard. The long. The challenging. You have no business here anymore. From now on, difficult will seem doable. I will see the impossible as simply not-yet-conquered. Farewell, Can't. You will haunt me never again. Hello, Can. Welcome to my world.

Hi Team -- Sorry, I've kind of let you down lately. Haven't been doing much Spark/Fitness wise since the storm. We had more damage than showed at first -- one of our educational buildings turned into a Petri dish for mildew. Finding out what happened, moving the affected programs into new temporary quarters, arranging for remediation, figuring out how to pay for it all -- plus all my regular work at September speed. I've been working hard and coming home late and tired. I also was injured during the storm: I was bending over and reaching for my cat and felt a sharp pain near the bottom of my rib cage. I'm not sure if I cracked a rib or pulled a muscle, but it's been really sore and doesn't inspire me to go lift weights or get up early for that Pilates class. It's almost healed now but still kind of tender.
I'm leaving this week on a nice long business trip. You know something's wrong when you think of a conference as a chance to rest up! The schedule will be very relaxed, so there should be lots of good opportunities for nice long walks, which is my version of hiking. It's in a really nice area, NW New Mexico, very different from our swamps! I'm also taking a week of continuing ed to work on some of the stuff I'll be learning at the conference, plus some annual review, goals and objectives, planning for next year. I simply can't get that stuff done in the office -- I can't get perspective. Then I decided to take a week of vacation and drive instead of flying. Call me nuts, but I love really long car trips. I carry my own food and look for grocery stores so I can keep control over my eating, I listen to books on tape, I watch the scenery roll by, and I let my mind stop moving so fast and working so hard.
I'll be checking in as I can, but internet/cell phone coverage isn't real good out there (aww! too bad!). Y'all have fun without me. It's football season, so let's make sure we've got our priorities on straight: 1) Saints, 2) family, 3) food, 4) work, 5) everything else.

We stayed home for the Hurricane and today is my first day back @ work. We had minimal damage, compared to others. Electricity came back on Labor Day. I over indulged and it's time to get back on track.

Debbie I don't currently live in the area but my husbands job is suppose to be transferring us there next year. I joined this team so I'd know people when I got there. If I were there, I'd be thrilled to get together with some of you guys and we could all help each other out. But you are correct, the team isn't very active on here. Maybe we could change that. Suggestions?

Hi!!
I was hoping Spark People would be more interactive than it is...........or I guess I am not who I should be to be here. I was looking forward to connecting to people in the area---maybe walk or work out with them, find different activities around town, but these New Orleans area boards are pretty much dead......
Disappointed....... but the New Orleans boards ARE pretty depressing........especially for someone who has no self-motivation left and doesn't feel like searching for any right now.
Oh, well, I'm being a Debbie Downer and didn't mean to be. Good luck to those of you who are on your way.

I've been struggling with my weight for years and frankly just very exhausted at the end of my days to even think about exercising. I started using these products and it helped me so much. I started with the 24 day challenge www.nolafitchallenge.com which is a cleanse and nutrition system to kick off any one making a lifestyle change or someone who hit a plateau and needs to get over it.
Now I take Spark drink https://www.advocare.com/120530193/Store/C
atalogView.aspx?id=E between meals on empty stomach and i have tons of energy and feel great. These are some of the best products out there, so much so that Drew Brees sponsors them and takes Spark drink himself.
Please feel free to reply with any questions.

You know, you have to watch out for those little short people. I spent a week helping with Vacation Bible School at my church, and two weeks recovering from the experience! It wasn't until yesterday that I finally felt my energy coming back. Wow, I'm getting old! At least it was a fun week, and it was great watching the kids and teenagers having so much fun.
Good to see you Kim, I was wondering where you went.
And welcome Jennifer. No, we're not the most active site, but there are some great people here. I hope you'll help get our boards going.
Have a great day everybody!

Sorry guys. I got a new phone and can now get on the internet with it. So I haven't been getting on the computer much. I need to get the sparkpeople app on my phone I guess.

The spanish word for wheat is trigo. pronounced tr (with the trill of your tongue) eego. I have a handy dandy mexican that's my son's best friend.

I love my job, but I am loving being off for a couple of weeks! I like getting away and taking life easy, in a place with no worries. I'm doing most of my own cooking (I enjoy it), and when I go out, I ask lots of questions and tell the server what I want. Doesn't work so well in Tex-Mex places though -- my Spanish is next to non-existent, and the servers don't know enough English to answer questions. I know that corn is "maize," but what's the word for "wheat"?

My internet access is kind of spotty, so I'll be in and out for a while.

Yeah, I try to just watch the amounts of what I take in. That's where I'm going wrong. I eat out of boredom, stress, etc. Even when I'm not hungry.

I was having a lovely vacation snooze-fest this morning when my fire alarms went off. That got my attention! By the time I was up and had my robe on, they quit. I checked things out and found no smoke, haze or unusual heat, and it hasn't happened since. Odd, and unsettling.

I decided to go the nutrition route on my own. I eat what I know to be healthy food when I am hungry, and I don't pay too much attention to the numbers and ratios on a daily basis, although I do keep an eye on my weekly averages. Going gluten-free brought my carbs way down, and my favorite form of sugar is fruit, so I'm not too worried.

Definitely enjoying being in vacation mode. I try to keep reasonably active so I don't just turn into a three-toed sloth, and there are just a few things I need to get done. But I'm off the clock and my mind is free.

Have a great day everyone!

Yes, just start with lighter weights and work on your form and breathing. Our group also used the big ball so I had to consentrate on balance as well. I was a little sore the next day but no biggie. I will def take it again.

Well, now I know what "group training" is about, and I am sore! Lots of different exercising using body parts I don't usually use, one after another. My trainer was good about suggesting modifications for me (and a few of the others) and supporting my decision to drop out when I needed to. For the most part I managed to keep up fairly well except that I do things more slowly than the rest of the group -- 15 reps while everyone else does 30. I'm not resting in between, I'm just moving more slowly, paying attention to breathing and form and taking my time. I think I read somewhere that slower can be better -- the muscle is engaged for as long and actually works harder because of the isometric effect. Or something like that. Yes, I'm sure I read that somewhere.
It was the knee stuff that got to me. Not just the obvious like squats but also the all-fours stuff like push-ups and arm-leg extensions. And, needless to say, the getting up and down from the floor to standing or vice versa. I can do up, or I can do down, it's this back-and-forth stuff that I don't like. Sometimes my mom tells me that it's a family thing -- our kneecaps are out of place -- and sometimes she says its a disposition to arthritis. Either way, strengthening the muscles around the knee is the best thing for me, and there's no way to do that without actually moving my knees. The water work and recumbent bike have been helping; I've noticed that stairs are getting easier. And, of course, reducing the load that my knees have to carry.
Glad to hear you liked the Body Pump, Kim. My gym has it too and it's on our "encouraged" list. I've been kind of scared of it because it sounded sort of jock-like, but you make it sound much more appealing. I'll give it a try, just not this week.
Have a great day, everyone.

I started my c25k again. I picked up where I left off. It was kinda tough but I made it through.

Yes you definately don't want to make too many chqnges too quickly. You will be setting yourself up for failure.

I went back to the gym this morning for the first time in a couple of weeks. I did a class called body pump and it was fun. It uses dumbell and bar weights, those band things, the big ball things you sit on, and sometimes a step. I have a feeling I will be super sore in the morning. But it felt good to do some real exericse again.

No, it's a meal delivery service called Fit Gourmet. They're affiliated with Oschner, and they work with a nutritionist on the staff of the fitness center. The food is fresh, and it's good.
I'm still struggling with the transition to gluten-free. It's not hard figuring out what to eat, but it's a different way of thinking about and planning food. And trying to switch to low-carb at the same time leaves me feeling resentful. I don't want my old food back, I just want it to be easy and automatic, like my meal-planning used to be. Tonight I went to Whole Foods to try to pick up some quick high-protein, low-carb, gluten-free meals. I used to do flavored baked tofu -- high protein, low-fat, easy to work with, and contains wheat. I like heat-and-eat Indian food -- lentils, chick-peas, spinach and paneer (cheese) in spicy sauces -- low fat, gluten-free, and the carbs are too high, especially if I add brown rice. Finally I asked the clerk if they had any gluten-free tuna.
I'm really thinking about ditching the nutritionist and the meal service. The food I was eating before wasn't unhealthy, it just didn't fit with their idea of what is "best." I was feeling good and losing weight, and there are only so many changes I can make at once. I want to give this program a fair try, listen to people who are trained and follow their advice. But today I'm just feeling frustrated. I'll probably feel better when I get more used to the program.
Aqua zumba was fun. A bunch of fat old ladies (like me) doing salsa, bumps and grinds, and rapid pelvic tilts. And loving it.
Tomorrow I'm going to Baton Rouge for my mom's birthday, and I'll be making a flourless cake. It will be a good week-end.

Luckily, I don't have food allergies. That has to be hard. Are you doing the biggest loser meals or another brand? I heard the biggest loser ones are good. My friend did the nutri system and said that stuff was gross.

Well, Biggest Loser is, interesting. After three days, I'm enjoying it.
I went to the Beginner Pilates class this morning -- I thought for sure I was going to die. And tomorrow I'm going to try Aqua Zumba. My first group work-out turned out to be an introduction to strength training; she says that next week we're going to really train, so I'm curious to find out what that means.
I decided to sign up for the meal delivery service, and my first few meals have been good. I'm just juggling so many things right now; I figured that getting some help on figuring out to eat might be a good thing. We had a group meeting with our nutritionist last night -- what a disappointment. Good info, but it was pretty much just the basics which I already knew. I didn't get much more than a review. The real downer was that every single slide talked about either milk or whole wheat, neither of which I can eat. I was wanting to learn about what kind of options I have, and there was not much of anything about soy or almond milk or grains other than wheat and corn. I'm starting to get pretty good at doing my own translations, but sometimes I get tired of feeling like an alien. Oh well.
And, need I say that with all this exercise, I am sleeping really great!

I'm still in west Ky. I'm just getting the house decluttered and deep cleaned.

I have those moments too. Recently, in fact, a lot. With all the cleaning, I have laxed in real exercise.

Are you in your new house, Kim, or is this in preparation for leaving the old one?

I had a bit of a melt-down at the gym yesterday. I'd been having an "I don' wanna!" week, with my excuse being that I was tired. Yesterday was one of those wonderful days when exactly one thing went right all day. I decided that the gym would be good for me, that the only thing that was keeping me from my workouts was me, and exercise gives energy, and some good stress-busting would be good for me. The workout went well, I was feeling great and enjoying myself. Then I got in the whirlpool, and within 8 minutes I came completely unglued. Exhausted, shaky, overheated. I sat down, then got dressed and went out into the air conditioning and got some cold water and then just sat there until I felt more normal. I keep energy bars in my car so I got something to eat right away, and by the time I got home I was feeling okay. Then I got an e-mail from the nutritionist with my new diet plan -- turns out I've been getting about half as much protein as I need. No wonder I was feeling tired! Eating more today, and this evening I looked at my exercise bike and thought it sounded like a good idea. Comfortable, easy exercise.

We had the orientation for the Biggest Loser program, and my first group meeting and work-out is Monday. There's lots of challenges and motivational game type things, so it will be a lot of activity. But no yelling. No voting off. And no super dramatic drops in weight. If I can lose 20-30 pounds over the 10 weeks, I'll be delighted.

Have a great Sunday!

Oh. it's been excellent exercise. I'm moving everything out of every room and deep cleaning. Windows, walls, woodwork. painting where needed, shampooing carpets and stripping and rewaxing the hard floors.

My focus no matter how busy I am, is still to live healthy and never give up.

Ooooooh, I hurt! Big day at work yesterday, lots and lots and lots of standing. I came home at 6 and got right in bed. First my legs were restless and jumpy, then they started cramping, then my ankles and knees started to ACHE! Took me a while to get to sleep, but once I did, I was out for the night and stayed that way for about 10 hours. Today I'm still achy, plus my back. I do NOT want to go in to the office today! But with an all-day meeting on Tuesday, plus people counting on me for stuff, I kind of have to.
Tonight is the kick-off reception for my Biggest Loser program. Oh, what fun, exercise. Actually if I can get over there early enough for my water aerobics class, it probably will make me feel better. Plus, they have a whirlpool.
Have a great day, New Orleans!

Up in Baton Rouge with my folks for the holidays. Mom asked if I'd cook, and I said sure, what have you got? Oh, so lamb chops and a few vegetables -- like portabello mushrooms, asparagus, and corn on the cob. I got out the grill pan and made a garlic aioli -- so good! A friend of mine told me once that the secret to making good meat is to get a good cut and then apply heat. Works every time!

I still prefer to exercise in loose T-shirts, thank you. I did get bold and go with shorts instead of my usual capris or ankle-length bottoms. Last week I was getting dressed and realized that I had forgotten my towel, so I went out to the front desk IN MY BATHING SUIT! No one gasped in horror and the ceiling didn't cave in, but I felt very conspicuous.
No, my new outfit is the wrong size. I read the big numbers on the tag and missed the small ones. But not so much too small that there is no hope.
I enjoyed meeting with the trainer and getting set up with my routine. And I decided to go ahead and do the special program. They may all call me granny, but I think it will be good for me.
Cell coverage -- I'm with AT&T and have no problems.

I have a question thats off topic. What cell service gets the best coverage in that area? Our cells are up for renewal in July and we were wondering if we needed to stay with AT&T or switch to another carrier.

When I joined the gym in Alabama, I had to be cleared by a doc. But this gym didn't require that.

Yes, those workout clothes are suppose to fit tight to keep you from jiggling so much while your exercising, lol.

I have been sick and haven't been to the gym in a couple of weeks. I have still been doing my c25k workout though, with the exception of one. And I am also deep cleaning my house one room at a time. That requires moving all furniture, stripping and rewaxing all hard floors and shamooping all carpets. It's exhausting work.

Good morning,
I've got an appointment with a trainer this morning -- the "fitness consultation" that comes with joining my gym. I imagine he'll have lots of questions and he'll take my blood pressure, and then he'll show me how to use some of the fancy machines. So far all I've been doing in swimming, and I'm ready to move into some of the strength training stuff. I'm excited about it, but a bit nervous too. Last night I went to Wal-Mart to buy some real exercise gear (I usually just throw on some old shorts) and picked up a cute purple outfit. Turns out the JMS sizes differently than the rest of the world and everything is a size too small. Oh well -- a goal to work towards.

I'm thinking about joining their "Biggest Loser" program for the summer. It's not the intense stuff you see on TV, but it is a supportive and somewhat competitive environment to help keep me motivated and an opportunity to try out some new kinds of exercise I might not have picked up on my own. I'm worried about being the only fat old lady in the group. I asked the guy that runs it for more information and if I'd fit in, and he sent me a physician's clearance form. One of my mottoes: beware of all activities that require a doctor's signature! I'll try to get some more perspective from the guy I'm meeting with this morning. It's $250, so I want to be sure it will be a good thing for me.

Have a great day y'all!

Yes, I'm not too overly worried about the weight number. I can see a difference in my body and how my clothed fit.

You're probably building a lot of muscle. Muscle weighs more, but fat takes up more space. If you're feeling good and noticing a difference in the way your clothes fit, then weight ain't nothin' but a number.
I've been working really hard -- I mean, like at work -- so the temptations to skip my work-out have been multiplying. Food has still been pretty good and I'm still feeling good, although not quite as qood. It's a temporary thing, so I'll be back in the routine pretty soon.
I made an appointment with a trainer -- the "fitness consultation" that's part of joining the gym. I've been swimming, which I absolutely love, but there's a lot of collateral time and effort that goes with it. I'm ready to start adding some strength training, and I'm looking for exercise that is faster and easier to work on to busy days. The pool will still be there when my schedule relaxes a bit. And once it really starts steaming down here, oh, that water is going to feel SOOO GOOOD!
A lady in the locker room suggested I try the steam room after my work-out -- good for the skin, good for the sinuses, good for the hair, relaxing for the muscles, sounds like a winner. But all the time I was sitting there, I just kept thinking, Why am I paying for this when all I have to do is just wait for July and then walk outside? At least the whirlpool has bubbles!
Have a great day, New Orleans!

LOL, yeah, with my family, that's not gonna happen. I've babied them til they can't seem to do anything for themselves anymore.

I have just done the basics in the house and I was already off all week anyways. I did my running workout yesterday and actually did even more than the directions said too. I'm really starting to be able to tell a difference. it's amazing. I have so much more energy and motivation. Now if the weight would just start dropping.

Keep up the good work Kim but, maybe you should incorporate a little meditation or relaxation technique in your workouts. It sounds like you need some me time.

I am absolutely exhausted. I haven't slept very well for the past few nights and I had to do my running workout this morning. Then I had to clean the house and I have got to take my sister in law to the doctor and pull off my eight year olds birthday party. But hopefully tomorrow I can rest.

Yesterday, I did another day of my running workout. It's getting easier and easier. Then I went and cleaned a house and went to belly dance class last night.

I did have a sprite though. I had to take my sister in law to the ER and they didn't have water in the machine and I was dying for something to drink. I figured sprite was the better choice.

I knew I walked a lot @ work, but wearing the pedometer really shows it. Drinking a lot of water, but still trying to overcome those 3 pm munchies.

Testerday was my baby boy's eighth birthday. I worked part of the day. I clean houses, so I'm always on the move. Then I ran home and put some of the dinner on to cook, finished up the belly cance costume I was working on for another girl, took cupcakes and drinks to school for the kids, then I came home and finished the dinner, served it, and delivered the costume. Whew! I was glad to have it finished and delivered and she was thrilled with it. After I got back home, we had the cake. I will have his big party on saturday. This was just a little thing for his actual birthday.

I didn't get any real exercise yesterday but I was on the move all day long. I finally sat down last night and put my feet up and worked on the baby quilt I was working on before Jess brought me her costume to assemble.

I had a girl come over and we practiced our tribal fusion belly danc routine for about two hours. Then I went to my regular class last night and we practiced our fan dance for about 30 minutes then we talked the rest of the time.

Day four, this morning I upped the runnng time to 90 seconds and walked for 120. It actually only increased the running by one minute just at longer intervals.

Started to feel like myself again yesterday and pretty good today. I got back to the gym for a half-hour swim, and my food has been good. I've had digestive issues for years, and a few months ago I started getting serious about investigating my triggers. I knew wheat was one of the biggest, so my big goal for May is to avoid it. It does make meal-planning and eating out more challenging, but there's been a big improvement. Sugar is another big one, and by avoiding both of those, my carbs are way way down. Should make losing weight easier, too. I keep telling myself that it's about being healthy and feeling good, but I really want to lose this weight!
Have a good Sunday, everybody!

Today I took a class at the gym called sh'bam. It's a cardio dance type class. I didn't get much else done though. One of our air units is out and it's horribly hot in here. The guy is fixing it tomorrow though. We have air in half the house but not the other half.

I drank nothing but water today. I had waffles for breakfast, a sandwich and some chips for lunch, and for dinner Tom grilled steak, and I made some mixed veggies, kraut and weiners, and a dirt cake. I didn't eat but one plate which is better than normal.

Holy toledo, I just did the first c25k workout on my elliptical. I am dripping with sweat. Now I'm going out to clean up my nasty vehicle.

And today I have had a mug of coffee with cream and sugar, honestly just to try a new creamer I bought for my son, and a bowl of cereal with milk. I am now drinking on water.

Yesterday I went to the chiropractor, made it to the gym for zumba, then went in and out of a dozen fabric shops looking for a specific fabric, went to get my nails done, came back by the store and cooked dinner. Then i sat on my but the rest of the evening and worked on a craft project.

If I could get my eating under control, I'd be golden.
