I use the hanging kind as well for Suet. We get cats in our yard, so on the ground isn't a good idea. Here's a no melt recipe for Suet.
No Melt, All Season, Peanut Butter, Suet Recipe
by D'Anne Franks (Brookesmith, Texas, USA)
1 cup crunchy peanut butter 2 cups (quick cook) oats 2 cups cornmeal 1 cup lard (no substitutions) 1 cup white flour
Melt the lard and peanut butter, and then stir in the remaining ingredients. Pour the mixture into square freezer containers about 1-1/2 inches thick. Allow it to cool, then cut it into squares and store them in the freezer.

May I always be the kind of person that my dog thinks I am.

Does anyone provide suet for your ground feeding wild birds?
It just dawned on me this morning as I refilled the feeders and suet cage, that I only provide suet for the perching and climbing wild birds. I don't have any one the ground for the ground feeders/scratchers.
If you do, how do you do set it out for them without a dog, squirrel, or raccoon getting into it?
Proverbs 3: 5-8 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. "
