Jean - you really do have wildlife in the back yard.

My post today was about a little gray tree frog that has been living in one of my indoor plants which I put outside every spring and move back in before frost. This year I moved my plants in early as I don't have time to go cover them again and again, so I just moved them in and thought I was done with it. Several days later we saw the frog sitting on the deck railing. I told my husband that I had moved his home indoors and he was sad and homeless. The next day he was still out there on the rail so I moved that one plant back outside and a couple hours later he was back in his home. Now I can move it back in the house with the little guy back where he belongs.

We have lots of deer and Elk in our yard, eating whats left of some apples that they got to before we did. For the last two nights we have had bear in the yard. The first night he split our compost bin asunder. Then last night he climbed our plum tree. The ground was so wet the tree fell over with him in it. We figure he weighs around 400 lbs.

I was on the phone this morning at my desk upstairs when I saw several deer come out of the woods onto the road. I was telling the woman I probably should go scare them off when more I saw 4 more in the woods heading for the road. There were a total of 12 deer of various sizes and my husband had seen them and scared them off before me as they were in a blind spot in the road due to a hill. They all jumped the fence and went into the pasture across the road. Very cool.

That was a big raccoon if you thought it was a dog at first. My husband went out the basement door this afternoon and there was a small squirrel under the deck that seemed confused and cold possibly hungry. He had never seen that before. We were going to put him in a dog kennel and feed him and put him in the garage to warm up, but I just checked for him and he is not here anymore. Hopefully the neighbors cat didn't get him.

I was out filling my humming bird feeders this afternoon, and though these to are not wildlife, I have not seen either one of these beings all summer. One was a frog and the other was a nice plumb walking stick.

Yesterday I was cleaning the kitchen and my husband called me to the stairs and asked if I saw the baby deer. I was watching him, or her, and a car drove by and another one came out of the ditch that I could not see before. They both still had their spots, and they were not eating any of my plants, only lemon balm and weeds. Then their mother must have snorted and called them as they looked over to the woods and ran like the wind. A little later one was back in the backyard eating my cone flower plants.

My husband and I spend almost a half hour trying to chase a rabbit from the garden. we have 4 raised beds one at each corner of a plus sign walk way added to thethat are 3 large flat on the ground patches for tomatoes, pumpkins, peppers, and melons are growing in those. So the rabbit was having an easy time of it running throught and around the beds.

we found a small rabbit den with the mother and two babies in it and we have been trying to get rid of them so they don't eat everything

I haven't seen any bears lately thank goodness. Still seeing a doe and twin fawns that come to my garden a couple times a day as well as 3-8 raccoons. I think they brought their babies that night that there were 8 but I didn't see them that night. My daughter did. I did the baby raccoons another time though because I go to work at 3:30 a.m. and I saw them a few weeks ago.
Still seeing the turkeys and ground hogs on a regular basis too.
Nothing new in the bird or butterfly world to visit my yard or garden. But I did go to the Aviary a week ago and saw some amazing birds there. Some of the rooms were set up like habitats and the birds flew free in these big rooms. That was really amazing.
Each room had a different theme: grasslands, tropical rainforest, desert, forest, swamp etc. kim

we have some raised beds and have attached netting to the posts to keep the critters out
and that seems to work.

There have been several bear sitings near our house...I say near meaning 12 miles but still that is closer than I want them to be!

I like the battery operated one. We have both and I just hate it with the lead cord. You're right, its so inconvenient. The battery lasts about 20 minutes and it takes 8 hours to charge. So I can get a good arm workout for 20 minutes a day and then charge it overnight and wait until the next day for the next arm workout. Really easy to operate too. kim

Good sunny/partly cloudy morning everyone!
Scattered sun with chances of showers throughout the weekend but its ok. I don't have to water my garden.
Of course the critters apparently love zucchini, cuke blooms and baby sunflowers so I don't think I'll get any veggies out of those but the tomatoes, chives and lettuce are still doing ok. Oh yeah, they ate the baby peppers as soon as they appeared too. Eating the sunflower tops and they were only about 6 inches tall so I'll be surprised if I get any to grow. Oh well.I'm thinking of planting some of all of those closer to the house, maybe even in the front yard. I knew the backyard would not be a good idea with the deer, woodchucks, turkeys, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks using it for their buffet.
Saw the turkey this morning at the feeders and I've been seeing 8-9 in the upper yard on a regular basis. Hardly ever see rabbits but we've been seeing a few this week. And a family of groundhogs with 3 babies. So cute.
The birds have stiff competition for their cracked corn and suet.
Wow, 3 big black crows just arrived. They are so huge compared to the tiny finches and humming birds and even put the regular sized birds to shame. They are so big, they might even be ravens. Luckily they don't come often and don't stay long.
I'm off today They sent us home early from work yesterday 6:15 a.m. because they didn't have any work for us Temps. I'm doing some shopping this morning too and then I'm going to exercise and then relax.
Some plants might jump into my cart today since I need a few more to fill in some blank spots. Hubby gave me another small triangle shape flowerbed where the wheelchair ramp meets the deck so I want to fill that in today with something small growing. And fill in the rest with the seeds I have. I may do some weed whacking today. Boy is that a great arm workout. Luckily the weed whacker battery only lasts about 20 minutes. I can really feel it after I'm done with that. kim

Yesterday I watched a bunch of mocking birds chase a hawk they were all ganging up on it trying to nip it's tail

the small birds were quiet as could be and once the hawk was gone they were all chatty again

Luckily we haven't had any trouble with skunks.
The 2 turkeys have still been coming regularly, sometimes 3-4 times a day. And now we have 2-3 raccoons that come at night, all night long. I put out corn for them and grapes and any other over ripe fruit or veggies we have. They also eat the spilled birdseed from the feeders so its a little smorgasbord for them. They even come and eat while I'm sitting on the porch so I was able to see them fairly close.
I just have to bring the suet feeders in every night because they steal them.
Last week I saw a newborn fawn in our yard and he and his mom come quite frequently to the top of the yard by the woods. Tom said when he mowed up there, he saw places where they had bedded down along the edge of the woods. Well yesterday morning I saw the fawn walking across our top yard by the woods all by itself so I went up to investigate. By the time I got up there it had disappeared. Little known to me it had laid down in the tall grass by a tree So I actually walked past it into the woods a little way. Then on the way back I saw it again walking around, looking lost. And then I saw it lay down by the tree again so I went over to within 6 feet of it. It was all curled up by the tree in the tall grass. Even from that close I could hardly see it. But then it got nervous and jumped up and ran into the woods. So I left so it would come back and lay down again. Mom was no where around and I was a little worried.
Later that evening I saw them both in the top yard by the woods and he was nursing. So adorable.
Squirrels and chipmunks and groundhogs are also regulars in our yard. The squirrels and chipmunks at the feeders, the groundhogs farther up in the yard.I just saw a baby ground hog also. So cute when they're little like that!I should open an animal preserve. kim

Now that it looks for sure like we can not afford to go on vacation to Alaska, I will definitely be getting a pond this summer even if it is just a small one with a bubbler. I would prefer a waterfall but we'll see. We have streams that go on either side of our yard and I want to incorporate the one thru the pond but I don't want all of the debris. Guess I need to figure out a way to block the debris but just have the water. And I don't want it cloudy all the time either. Luckily the one stream only goes thru when it rains hard. Otherwise it is mostly dry. I'll figure something out because I love goldfish. I had such big ones too in my old pond. They were at least 5 years old. Hated having to find them a new home but I did with a fellow ponder who had a huge pond in her backyard. They were quite happy to move up to the bigger pond. kimemoticonemoticon emoticonemoticon emoticonemoticon

Silver, what are silkies?

Ginger, my goldfish chased each other all over the pond when spawning. The males chase the females trying to get them to release their eggs so they can fertilize them. They get quite wild with the chasing, knocking over plants and re-arranging the lily pads. But its nature's way. I guess if they didn't chase them, the eggs wouldn't get fertilized.??? And then they eat them. I always took some eggs out and put them in my aquarium so I could see the baby goldfish being born and even raised a few.
I've got to get another pond. I told hubby that's what I want for Mother's day. He doesn't want me to get one. Told me to be happy with my birdfeeders. I loved watching the goldfish. I will have a pond again someday soon. kim

I love to watch the fish spawn. My goldfish used to do it several times a year. It was neat to watch.
emoticon here and very cold. But I fed the birds and they are quite happily chirping around in the rain, eating. A female turkey dropped by my feeding area yesterday and had some corn and she stopped by again this morning right after I put the corn out. I wonder if she was watching me. She just appeared out of the brush both days. Pretty cool to see. Tracy took some pics of her so I will upload them later. kim

It was really interesting at the lake today as the fish were spawning. They were really big and there were lots of them near the edge where we could see them, all the way round the Lake. Our friend told us they only do it once a year, so we were really lucky to see them! I think they were Pike.

Good luck with the peacock and peahens laying eggs.
A friend of ours bought a pair and he had them for quite awhile until the female got hit by a car. Now the male is inconsolable. Well he was last year. I don't know if he's doing any better this year. I guess my friend should get him some pea hens. kim

Little bugger was digging under the cage Ginger.I really need to get a pole syringe if this is something I am going to run into a lot. It can be dangerous Her skunks are the #1 rabies carrier.I have worked in this area before and have been taught how to do it. I am not thinking any one should do it. I also have pre rabies exposure shots.

There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

The skunk was not smelly when I set the trap I covered it with a sheet. They are very calm little animals.I snuck up from behind and lifted the sheet and gave him a shot once he fell asleep we loaded him up and drove out to the BLM land and released him .The drug was already wearing off and he staggered away.
We have been getting hummingbirds at the feeders and there are butterflies out there as well

I haven't seen any moths or butterflies yet. Still seeing deer and wild turkeys and a few rabbits. kim

A skunk! Was it smelly?
The squirrel was in my garden today. Also lots of birds and heard a warbler, but didn't see it. There was a cabbage white butterfly flitting about and quite a few bees.
