We had bluebirds in their houses and wrens in theirs again this year....Have you considered putting a harder wood on the front with the hole...say a piece of oak? That is what we are going to do because it is harder for the "varmits" to chew through!

At my local bird store I actualy bought a round plate that is placed over the hole so squirrels can't chew the hole and make it bigger.

I have a problem with the house sparrows using my houses. But since I can't seem to attract bluebirds, I'm happy with the sparrows using the houses.

I did put the metal plate on one of my bluebird houses but the sparrows can't get in it so we are thinking of removing the plate.

I miss having htem here this year, but we have had two families of Rose Breasted Grosbeaks here since early spring, so that sorta makes up for it.

You can actually put another piece on the front - over the old hole - with a smaller hole which is ok because the bluebirds do not mind and it helps keep other things out.

Thanks Ginger, I appreciate it, think my hubby may make another one this winter and just make the hole a bit smaller. We've had this one out here for 4 years and had bluebirds every year.

emoticon they left but maybe this will help for next year? The plans for the house look quite easy and all the dimensions are given. It looks like most other bluebird houses with just a few minor changes concerning size and of course the hole size. Our bluebirds I have seen but they are not in any of the houses yet so either they have not picked any or they have not started to nest yet? Hope you are having a nice week there ,its NOT snowing today woo hoo. emoticon

Thanks Ginger, I think the blackbirds have moved on, we actually taped up the hole so they couldn't get in. Too late for the bluebirds though, they moved to the neighbors, darn it

Hi Peggi I finally got some info for you!The book I have called (The Bird Garden) has this to say about the blackbirds, starlings and grackles They have plans for a blubird house in here which is supposed to discourage them it has a smaller hole which they do not like so its says to make the entrance hole 1 1/2 in .If you would like the plans I could maybe take a picture of it and send it via email?

I need help and hope someone here has some answers. We have had bluebirds in our bluebird house for the past 4 years, this year we have blackbirds. The bluebirds have moved over to the neighbors. I believe the blackbirds chased them off. We have been taking the blackbird nest out of the box daily but they keep coming back. I am thinking of taking the box completely down for a while. Any ideas here?
