I just recall years ago my old red tabby tom (now deceased) had fleas as a kitten and the wife ended up getting shampoo from the SPCA as he was from a litter there. They all died and he was OK except he got a cold (probably being all wet and flea bitten didn't help). Good luck with your kitties.

Just remembered something else my vet told me to do...vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. I had a bad infestation years ago and I bought a gallon jug of flea killer from PetSmart. You can spray it on furniture, bedding, carpet. I sprayed it, let it dry and then vacuumed. I made sure I vacuumed daily. With some perserverance I got rid of the fleas. I have a puppy now and we use Pet Armor on him. Even though he doesn't have fleas (that we can see or off the flea comb) we treat him monthly as a precaution. He is indoors with the cats so i don't want a flea problem. I have 8 cats so it would get pretty costly to treat them all.

The advantage is good and I believe the advantage plus also kills the eggs. (need to check on that one). If I remember correctly, the recommended dosage is once monthly. It lasts longer for me, and because of the expense, I don't put it on my inside-only cat. He is older, and I usually wait for a time when he isn't going through something else. Fleas are difficult sometimes, but keep at it, and eventually the environment will be flea-proof! emoticon

I had the same problem with my cat Earl Grey. After multiple trips to the vet a sub vet finally determined the problem with losing hair and scabbed areas was flea related, even though we didn't see fleas. He found flea dirt on the cat. He recommended Feline Advantage. I got it quickly from 1-800 Petmeds and it did the trick. I've noticed my cat is starting to get the scabbed areas again so I am restarting the flea medication. he was good for almost 10 months.

Hi not sure if someone has said this ..but you can use blue Dawn dishwashing liquid to wash your cat and get rid of the fleas. Leave the Dawn on for a few minutes then rinse and if they still have some alive..repeat. I used to be a dog groomer and this is what we used on dogs/cats who had allergies/sensitivities. Good luck getting rid of them, :)

Never use the Hartz or flea collars. If they ingest the chemicals from them they can get very sick or even die. I recommend Frontline or Revolution for both dogs and cats. If you have flea issues in your home I have had good luck with Adam's Home Spray. I was able to find it at Wal-Mart. Hope they get better soon!

They shouldn't be. However, I haven't seen (or looked for) that flea medicine in a long time.

These days I bite the bullet and buy the medicine from my vet. I almost killed my cat once by using Hartz. I had no idea, but later found out from my vet that it had been consistently disagreeing with, and was even deadly to some cats. Fortunately, mine survived. I suppose I am over-protective, but my cat has certain sensitivities and is elderly. I will make no changes for him without consultation. I must drive the vet crazy! emoticon emoticon

Yeah, I stay away from over the counter flea/tick treatments. I get that stuff from my vet.

What I DID used to do was get the Hartz spray, spray down any bedding and cat trees, and leave those items outside to dry. That took care of fleas and ticks on those items.

I would NEVER use those products on my animals, though.

I was surprised to hear about the Hartz. Does that include their vitamins? Yikes!

We use Petarmor from Walmart (Vet suggested it because it is the same medicine as Advantage, I think). Its a lot cheaper though. Hopefully, this one is not deadly, like Hartz.

Good luck with the fleas. Hate those things!

Angelbeliever is spot on! I actually KNOW people who had their cat AND dog die violent deaths because of that Hartz.

The vet needs to get them on K9 or Advantage and once they are on that, you need to vacumn and wash all their bedding and yours. The fleas will start to bother you when they can't bother them.

Thank you!! I never had a problem w/fleas since my cats are inside cats. I took my brother's dog in last year when he got a divorce, can't have one where he lives now.

Thank you for telling me about Hartz, I got it since it was over the counter & the spray I could use w/o giving them a bath.

Will call Vet tomorrow.

Stop the Hartz now. Many animals have died from it I have read. Please take them to the vet. They will use Revolution or Advantage to the neck area where they can't lick it off. The you can use this monthly You can put it on yourself after the show you how. Don't mean to scare you but Hartz has caused problems with cats and dogs.

My dog gave my 2 cats fleas. I've been trying to get rid of them for a couple weeks now from all three of them but now noticed tonight that 1 of my cats has a lot of scabs around her neck. She doesn't wear a collar so is it from the fleas & should I take her to the vet? What product is the best to get rid of fleas. I've put Hartz Ultra Guard on them & have been using the Hartz flea spray that you spray on them & leave on for 10 min then towel dry them & brush them but fleas are still present. Ugh...I hate fleas!!
