My Gracie now 4 yrs old has Asthma - so I have to give her a 1/2 of a pill am and pm. I have learned not to say the word 'medicine' around her, because under the bed she goes. So, I just pick her up, put her on the counter, have her sit, open her mouth and shove the pill to the back of her throat! That is it - I give her wet food and she is happy! Same thing at night!!! LOL

CSCROSSETT, you are lucky to have your hubby help you. Before I knew about pill pockets and one of my cats needed medication, I knew that I couldn't give him pills by myself. So I just mashed the pill to a fine powder and mixed it really well with just a little bit of wet food. He licked it up and then I gave him the rest of the wet food. He took all his medicine that way AND got better so it worked (I had to do twice with him). If my female cat, Lucy, ever needs meds, that's the way I will have to do it since I live alone and she loves her wet food.

My Boris knows when there is a pill mixed in with food. I think liquid meds are the worst. I don't enjoy shoving a pill down his throat but it is slightly easier and I know he is getting all the medicine. My husband holds him down and I put it in the back of his mouth so he swallows it right away and we are done. When I have to do it myself I wait until he gets in his box and use the corner to keep him from going anywhere. Same technic just no one holding him down.
Very funny though. Until you get a process that works it seems like you do have to go through all of that to try to get the cat to take a darn pill. Of coarse it is the difficult cat that needs to take a pill and not the dog that will eat anything wrapped in cheese

My female doesn't like the pill pockets but my male cat LOVES them! It is a really soft meaty snack and the pill goes inside it. They have different flavors. Let me know if they work out. emoticon

I know that people have said it to you but I wanted to tell you about the miracle of "Greenies Pill Pockets." I was using the feline one but couldn't get it for a while so I got the dog one and the flavor and ingredients are the same. My cat things it is a treat and doesn't fight me.

Right now he is sick and without the pill pockets, he probably wouldn't be here right now. Good luck with your kitty.

My cats object strenuously to the pill pusher. And the person pushing the pusher.

Oh how true!! I have 8 cats so pills are always fun. I am giving one antibiotics right now. I use a handy dandy pill pusher. It works great!!! I can really relate to the description.

How creative! I (we) may need to try that. Fortunately, we are using liquids now, but that is just as difficult. Cats certainly have minds of their own! emoticon emoticon

I laughed till I cried! Just try doing this when you have TWO cats and you live on your own. My method is as follows:

1. Wrap self round cat like towel
2. Prize open cat's jaws
3. Insert pill into cat's mouth
4. Hold it SHUT for 10 minutes
5. Have quick look to make sure pill has gone
6. Pick soggy spat out pill up and as it's an antibiotic and cat has to take ALL of them, repeat process.
7. Continue to repeat point 6 till cat starts to foam at mouth. This means the pill has dissolved and cat cannot spit it out any longer.

You must have seen me with Max. He was something else to give a pill too. My husband had to hold him tightly, and I had to shove it down. I used those Pill Pockets, it worked one day, next day, he figured out there was a pill in it. Don't bother with wet food, Mr. Finicky. Thank goodness I don't have to do that anymore. Now with Tigger, it's just trying to catch him. Once I have him in my arms (like a baby) I pop the pill in and no problem. But then, there was a time, he actually spit it out at me! Now where's my glass of wine!

I believe my cat can sense when you are even thinking pills. I even had a vet that could not do it, and sent him home for me to do. emoticon He does not mind shots or even enemas(once he realizes the medicine isn't going into his throat when wrapped). When I have long-term medications, my mother, who is a nurse will give him shots if possible. No problem.
I am currently treating a bowel obstruction which requires daily medication. It is in liquid form and a challenge to get him to take. No matter what you put it in, it has to be mixed just right etc. Additionally, he may change food preferences on a whim and you never know what to try.
It is amazing the the things I will do just to get him to take his medications. emoticon

So true!!! My cat gets a half pill every evening, which makes it even worse, we all know how bad the inside of a pill tastes. I tried lots of different ways, most worked for a while...hold cat like baby (then wrap cat like a mummy and hold like baby), put pill in back of throat, massage pill down, but eventually she could throw it back up. Pill pockets, she started eating the treat and leaving the pill. In food, eventually ate all the food and left the pill. Crushed in food--just didn't eat for 2 days. Crushed and dissolved in water, than mixed with wet food with dry food sprinkled on top---this is my current winner. And I keep dinner light--which is the meal I give her her pill with--so I can be sure she'll eat it all.

LOL!!

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

How to Give a Cat a Pill

1. Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby.
Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cats mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth.
Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa.
Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process..

3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.

4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand.
Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.
5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe.
Call spouse in from the garden.

6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws..
Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail.
Get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.

8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit.
Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

9. Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans and drink one (low cal) beer to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

10. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed.
Get another pill. Open another beer. Place cat in cupboard, and close door onto neck, to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.

11. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges.
Drink beer. Fetch bottle of scotch. Pour shot, drink.
Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Apply whiskey compress to cheek to disinfect. Toss back another shot. Throw tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

12. Call fire department to retrieve the damn cat from the top of the tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat.
Take last pill from foil wrap.

13. Using heavy-duty pruning gloves from shed, tie the little *&#%^'s front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of filet steak. Be rough about it. Hold head vertically and pour two pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

14. Consume remainder of scotch. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room. Sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home to order new table.

15. Arrange for RSPCA to collect mutant cat from hell and call local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

How To Give A Dog A Pill

1. Wrap it in bacon.

2. Toss it in the air.
