Cute story about the cat purr!

That reminds me of an old joke I read once: A little girl and her mother were looking at a cat lying in the sunshine. The little girl ran her hand down the cat's fur and said, 'oh, feel how hot her fur is!'. Then the cat began to purr. The little girl became upset and said 'Oh no, Mommy! She's beginning to boil!'

My Siamese loves the heat, too. She will lay out until she's half cooked. This really is not good for her - or any other cat who has temperature sensing problems.

Last week I ended up taking her to the vet because she was walking like she was drunk. I'd been careful to keep her from lying out in the hottest part of the day, so I thought it might be thyroid or something. Turns out it was just the accumulated heat over days that dehydrated her. She'll be 19 in November, so she's just more fragile.

I'm glad she isn't interested in my water, but I leave at least three bowls of water around the house so she can drink any time she's thirsty, wherever she is.

I walked into the living room one day and caught Alice dipping her hairy paw into my water glass and drinking the drops from her toes. Now I don't leave a glass unattended (it's not only the drinking, she's tipped them over before). I don't know how long she had been drinking out of my glasses before I caught her in the act. I guess I've drunk some of her nasty kitty germs! emoticon

I like to make sure they have lots of water and I like to keep the east windows shut during the morning so the house stays a bit cooler. Then I will open them later on to get a cross-draft. I should hook up the AC but it hasn't been consistently hot yet- I could also let the guys go downstairs as I have a cooler basement. One advantage of living in Canada.

I have window A/C units in my house and it stays pretty cool. I find that my Siamese, loves the heat. The hotter the better. She sleeps on the hot back porch all day. I'll find her out there all day. Then in the late afternoon she comes into the kitchen and sprawls out on the cool kitchen floor. Several of my cats love the ice in the water bowl but they find it more of a toy and bat the cube around. They also have a bad habit of drinking my cold water from my glass!!!! I have learned to share.

My cats' food dishes are ceramic, but their electric water fountain is plastic.

My first cat Callie always used plastic dishes with no problems, but when I got the two I have now, I had read about plastic sometimes causing problems, so I resisted getting plastic just in case. Alice sometimes has a 'scabby' chin and jaw, but that's from her habit of rubbing her jaw/chin on doorways, lamps, chair legs, etc. (At least she doesn't eat plastic like my other cat, Maggie May, does. I have to keep any grocery bags and Ziploc-type bags I have locked up where she can't get to them.

Another note of wisdom if you will...Please don't use plastic dishes. It's not good for cats and sometimes they are allergic to plastic. One of mine broke out in a chin rash and it was the plastic dish.I use a ceramic one for Max's food and a metal one for his water.

I need to try putting an ice cube in their water. They need to drink more. I just bought a new fountain, but haven't put it together yet.

Max is smart. He'll only go on the screen porch early in the am and then back inside from 9 am on until 7 or so at night. It's like he can tell time...He's now curled up in his captain's chair asleep for the rest of the day. What a life. I just brought him so water before he settled down for his nap. He has food and water out a all the time. I put 1 ice cube in his water in the house and 2 on the one on the porch. He likes to lick the ice cube in his water. Smart cat. We found out by seeing him lick the ice in our tea glasses when I turned my head for a moment! Needless to say I dumped it all and washed out the glass. Oh well!

I think that hydration is a big must, of course. Make sure your cats have access to plenty of fresh water. Maybe a fan on 'low' could keep the air circulating and they won't be afraid of it so much. My cats are strictly indoor and I have A/C throughout the house. I had my entire A/C system replaced about 2 years ago come July and I had no A/C for about 2 days. You would think that they were dying! They would stretch out on the hardwood floor and look up at me like 'what happened?'. I guess they are just used to the cool air, since they've only been indoors (not that they're spoiled or anything!). I reminded them that we had no electricity for about a week and a half (which meant no fans, either) after Hurricane Katrina (which was during August), and they survived just fine, but they chose to ignore my lecture, LOL! My dad's cats are now strictly indoor, but they used to be indoor/outdoor. On the hottest days of the year, they wouldn't come inside until dark. They would just stretch out in the sun in the dirt and nap. It made me sweat just to look at them. But, it didn't seem to do them any harm.

On a related humorous note, I don't think my cats are afraid of fans. I use one now and then when I come in from working in the yard and need some 'extra' cooling for a little while (or during that time of year that I want to avoid turning on the air as long as possible). One time, I was sitting on the couch with the oscillating fan blowing on me. My cat Alice was sitting on the arm of the couch between me and the fan. Just as the fan came around to face me, she sneezed a mighty sneeze. I was immediately covered in cat spit! (What could I do? I just laughed and said 'bless you!')

As long as they have access to plenty of water, shade and a breeze (even if fan created), they should be fine and will seek cooler places if they feel hot (perhaps even jumping into the bathtub since it's surface is often cool). Keep an eye on them, however, in case they begin to show signs of heatstroke:

i have fans running all throughout the house. The cats dont seem to mind the heat and the rarely ever law anywhere near the fan. I try blowing the fan of them and they are scared of it. My husband told me Im crazy and that the cats are fine, so maybe it me worrying over nothing. Today its not too bad in the house...yet.

Do you at least have a fan or fans that can be on so they can have some breeze? I'd try to get a few window units in for your comfort as well as the cats. They don't have to be in all windows. They'll survive a little less view. Good luck. It does seem to be a very high temp inside.Max won't go out on the screen porch until evening and I live in Fl. We have the a/c and a ceiling fan. Max is quite cool.

It is about 95 degrees today and my house is atleast 90. I dont have air conditioners in, I do have them to put in, but my cats like laying in the windows. This is the first year i havent put air conditioners in the whole house, But Im worried about how hot it is for my cats. How hot is too hot for a cat? They dont seem to mind the heat too much, they lay around like they usually do, just maybe a little more than usual. I dont want my kitties to over heat and not sure how hot is too hot for my cats. Its hot in the house to me, so i imagine with all their fur, its even hotter to them. I know cats like the heat and sun, but i still worry.
