I have four cats, all shelter babies. One is a black female, we adopted her from a shelter in southern California. My boys loved that she was so tiny and named her Annie Elf. The shelter said she was 7 years old. We got her home and she promptly doubled in size. I don't think it was 7 years but mane 7 months. LOL.

We are always careful to keep all are cats on on Halloween. I have heard of some cruel stunts and don't understand why anyone would hurt (or fear) a helpless animal

My partner and I have four rescue cats, one of which is all black with just a few white hairs on his chest. The other three cats are a big tuxedo male, a calico, and a little snow tiger siamese female. When I tell people that they are all from the same litter, they don't believe me because the cats all look so different. We found them one day at the local pet cemetery where they had been dumped.

It's impossible to be afraid of our black cat, Pickles, because he is just too cuddly! My favorite thing about him is that he has a sneaky walk - when he doesn't want to be seen, he'll start sneaking even if it's full daylight. He also prefers to nap on black things, like my backpack. He's like a ninja.

I have four cats, one of which, Twink, is black with white toes. He was a gentleman of the road who moved in with me in 1999. He wasn't a baby then either, as he'd been around for a number of years. He had a huge festering sore on his chest, caused by his constantly scratching his flea allergy. He was very nervous at first and lived in our dining room, huddled against the radiator, first he wouldn't come indoors, then he didn't want to go outside. Now he's my old boy, the only cat allowed to spend the night on my bed. The others stay in the kitchen on their cushions. The last few weeks I have had another black cat trying to move in with us. I'm calling him loopy Lou, as he has a tendency to stroll in as if he owns the place, then hisses and growls at me,whilst stuffing his face on the cat biscuits!

I adopted Izzi two days before Christmas from the SPCA. She is mostly black with some white on her stomach and paws. I heard the same thing, they are the most likely to be killed because of stupid people believing they are bad luck. She is the most lovable cat ever. She is a mix, she has oriental or siamese in her and she is very elegant.

I've really enjoyed reading about everyone's black kitties. My Muffin showed up on my doorstep when he was a tiny kitty. All black long hair and turned into a big boy. The name always caused a laugh. He lived to be 21 and slept every night of his life on my pillow wrapped around my head. Hobo came after him. He was abandoned in a laundry room nearly starved to death. He lived to be 18. I called him the Dick Clark of kitties since he was always so dapper and youthful looking. Now I have Cassie, an adult black kitty who showed up at my house. She came inside when she wouldn't quit eating my cardinals. lol Sammy is a beautiful black long hair and the sweetest disposition in the world. Black cats are my favorite. It's so sad that shelters must restrict adopting black cats around Halloween. I was stunned when no-kill shelter in the community I moved from told me this.

Our cats are all on special diets that we purchase from our Vet. These foods are made by Royal Canin and Hill's. Merlin is on Hill's Prescription Diet C/D formula wet mostly and some dry because of his Mega Colon and his bladder crystals; Winston is on Royal Canin Medi-Cal Preventive formula dry mostly and some wet (he is the only one who is really healthy and we hope to keep him that way); Laurel is on Royal Canin Medi-Cal Calorie Control dry mostly and some wet; and his brother, Hardy, is on Royal Canin Medi-Cal Reduced Protein wet mostly with Purina Forti Flora added to help his inflammatory bowel disease and the same dry food as Merlin for his kidney disease. The only reason that we feed them 4 -5 times daily is because Merlin has to have a medication added to his food to keep his bowel from backing up and if you feed one then all the other cats want to be fed too, so we divided their daily food intake into 4-5 meals and it works well for us because we are retired, which explains it all.
Feeding your kittys twice daily is perfect! That is all the feedings that healthy cats need. Oh and by the way you are not nuts to love your cats. I have found that men take a number of years, it seems, to really warm up to cats... of course there are exceptions. When your husband least expects it, he will fall for their cute antics! Two cats is a good number to have. We originally had to cats (Laurel and Hardy), but inherited Merlin and Winston with our youngest daughter's unexpected passing. It was very hard to integrate Merlin and Winston and it took a long time (1 year), but finally they are fine with one another and we love them all dearly, but it did take some time for my husband to really appreciate them and how smart they really are! Have a great day! I will try to remember to put some pics of my cats on my spark page. I will try to do it this week at some point.

Yes, my cats are definitely part Hobbit, as they always have second breakfast and elevensies, etc. They are all on special food and they are fed 5 times a day. My black cat, Merlin is the most persistent and vocal about when it is time to eat again, as he is always hungry, even though he weighs 20 pounds (he is a big boned beautiful cat). He will try and clean up anyone elses bowl, if I am not vigilant. Merlin is 6 years old now, but when he was 3, I almost lost him twice to Mega Colin. Merlin is a fighter with a strong will to live and he made it through, only to be hit with a whole bunch of crystals in his bladder. After his surgery for this, he has been doing great ever since, as long as he stays only on his special food. My husband and I call him the $4000 cat and we love him dearly! In my humble opinion, I don't think you can spoil your cats or dogs, for that matter! They give us back so much more than we could ever give them, so go ahead and spoil them and your cat definitely knows she is well loved. Have a good one!

My "little black cat" as I often refer to her, is being very demanding today. Plus she seems to be part Hobbit as she demanded second breakfast today. Apparently her first breakfast at 4:30 this morning didn't suit her so she got me up again at 7:00. Then as soon as I got home from running errands she wanted another can. I wonder if she knows she's spoiled.

Most adoption places here are extra extra CAUTIOUS careful who they adopt black cats to.as they are mistreated and yes there are also those who won't adopt black cats. Such a shame we have 2.

Ace a Rescue Cat =who wasn't adopted for a whole year of his life ( his Foster Mom really felt that maybe because he was black). I couldn't stand it as we have a black dog and there are stigmas against them also. Ace is so super loving and wonderful and also he is super beautiful and is the animal pack leader at our house over 5 other animals =3 other cats and 2 dogs. We have discovered since his adoption that Ace is a special breed, bred to look like a panther called Bombay. So poo to all those who passed him over for adoption.

Buzz our kitten adopted with his sister (Emmy a tortoise shell beauty) who is also a Rescue Cat. Buzz walks like a cowboy and lives to eat=we just love him too. He knows his name and comes when called like a dog and say, "Meerp" when you talk to him. Both kittens were found abandoned by their Mom or a mean owner.

My Ebony is not gentle when she wants her breakfast. She does a whole body headbutt, using her little body as a battering ram. She's also keen to swat my face and yell at me until I get up. She knows what she wants and when. Cleo is much more docile. She barely meows and it is very quiet when she does. You look at her and she purrs. Then she goes to the vet (or kitty jail) and her personality does a 180. Ebony will cower at the vet, but Cleo fights. Her first visit I had to laugh because they had to put her in a body bag with just her head sticking out.

My little black girl, Belle, wakes me up by rolling off my shoulder, not once but two or three times -- sometime onto my head. :-) Then she'll just sit and look at me waiting for an eye to open. Other than that, she is very still. She's never been a night prowler/yowler. She goes to bed when it's time. But if she's not ready, all I have to do is tell her "go to bed" and she does. She was given to me 7 years ago, and she instantly became my favorite. Sadly, she is now my only cat. I woud love to have another one, but I am just not ready yet after losing two within an 8 month period.

Yes, isn't it interesting how cats become your alarm clock. We have the same kind of thing. Our black cat, Merlin, wakes me up every morning st 6 AM. I think this is partly due to the fact that he is hungry, which he always is, and he wants his breakfast!
Your cats sound great and they definitely have and have had a wonderful life in your care!
Have a fabulous day!!!

I have a mostly black cat named Ebony. She is a rescue cat that my mom picked for me because she was very vocal in her cage. She still is after 12 years. I don't have to worry about setting an alarm clock with her around.

When I was younger a black kitten found her way to me on Halloween. We already had two cats at the time, but after I crossed a busy street in my pajamas to save her, Midnight became number three. She was a wonderful cat that always wanted attention and a lap to sleep on. Unfortunately she had leukemia and passed away after just a few years.

We used to have a black cat named Blacky (original name), named by our youngest daughter, because he was her cat. Blacky passed on a few years ago from cancer, but I must tell you all how smart this cat was. Blacky could open doors! We couldn't figure it out at first. Every morning we would leave the house with all bedroom doors closed and when we got home the master bedroom door was open and the cats were enjoying themselves lying on the bed. We were stymied until one Saturday when we actually watched Blacky open the door. He would launch himself at the bedroom door off of the coffee table in the living room, fly through the air front paws out and hit the door with his body and twist the door handle with his paws and the door would open and he would go lie down on the bed! What an amazing feat and such a smart cat!!! When he was a kitten he could get into any drawers or cupboards that he wanted. The other amazing thing this cat would do was "growl" like a dog when he was sitting in a window looking out and a strange dog went by. This prankster was loads of fun and understood most anything you said to him. He was the alpha to our other 3 cats and best buddies with our 3 dogs.
Anyway, now we have Merlin, who I told you about previously. He is also a very smart black cat. By the way, all our cats are indoor cats. Have a great day everyone! emoticon

I don't understand about the whole 'unlucky' thing, either. I wouldn't avoid adopting a cat because it was black. I would look at how it acted and whether it looked healthy or not. That being said, I do have to admit that I ended up with my two cats because the litter of tiny kittens at the Humane Society that they were a part of was just too cute to miss. There were five in the litter, two that were cream tabbies and three that were red tabbies. The group looked like a splotch of creamsicle! I always wondered what happened to the others in the litter (I couldn't handle but two). I just hope that they found good homes somewhere. I love my cream tabby (Maggie May) and my red tabby (Alice), but I would still love them if they were black (or striped, or fruitcake, etc.).

My mother used to work in a Humane Society and they always had trouble adopting out black cats. They also advised owners of black cats to keep them inside on and around Halloween. We ended up adopting two cats from them at the time she worked there, and one of them was all black. My sister named him Shadow. I remember one Halloween he got out somehow (they were both always indoor cats) and instead of trick or treating we spent the night looking for him. We found him unharmed, fortunately.

Also, my in-laws live in Turkey and there are huge numbers of stray/unowned dogs in the cities. There's an enormous shelter (that barely desrves that name, it's more like doggy hell) and the majority of dogs there are black. Muslims are apparently very superstitious of black animals. They are thought to be representatives of the devil or something - to the point where "Black Dog" can be used as a particularly heinous insult.

People's capacity for ignorance and intolerance never ceases to amaze me.

I don't own any black cats today but use to in the past. Sylvester was all black with white paws and became a family favorite.

Stimpy, another black cat of ours, was fluffer and a rounder cat, yet he could do something I've never seen any other cat do---- Stimpy would sit up likea little bear and just look around for the longest time. Stimpy died in my arms of liver failure when he was poisoned from walking on a newly sprayed yard.

Finally, Plato was my Christmas kitty. He was a rescue and very shy and small. But when I brought my other cat back from Colordao, Plato ran away and search as I might all over the neighborhood and further and at the animal shelter, Plato had disappeared. That's the only problem I have with lovely black cats--- they are almost impossible to tell apart. Plato was micro-chipped but never showed up. I'm still sad about it.

Yes, I have a black cat named Merlin who is too smart for his britches. He is a very big cat with a gorgeous personality and a meow that sounds like a kitten. This morning, when I was getting the cats' food ready, Merlin jumped up on the counter and grabbed the measuring spoon I was using, knocked it on the floor, jumped down and picked it up in his mouth and ran away with it. He is such a prankster! He keeps my husband and I laughing every day with his antics.
I also had another black cat named Blacky (original eh!) and he was also a prankster and very, very smart. Another time I will tell you about some of the things he did. Blacky passed away in 2006 from Cancer and he was 18, so he lived a great long life with us. We love all our pets very very much!

I'm English and it's true that in England black cats are considered lucky. It's particularly lucky if a black cat crosses your path. I always say that it's lucky for the cat if it crosses my path because it gets a cuddle.

However, people here are also superstitious about them. Animal shelters have difficulty rehoming both black cats and black/white mixes. It's nuts. Temperament is the important thing with cats. I chose my boys (both grey/brown) because the big one, Charlie, was out the front of the pen rubbing his face against the mesh and clearly was dying to get to know the first friendly human who would come along. This is typical of my boys. The other, Percy, is very very timid and he was asleep in the back.

I was furious one time I was on Yahoo Answers and some idiot man came along, wanting to know what 'a black cat crossing my path means'. I told him it meant the cat just happened to be there at the same time he was, and to grow up!

My beloved Boo-Boo who was a maincoon mix was black. He adopted me one October maybe a week or two before Halloween and told me his name was Boo. He was a stray full of fleas. He has been gone now 6 years. I would adopt a black cat in a minute any day if I could. I can't believe people believe such nonsense. I get irritated when movies or shows portray any cats as evil or mean.

I rescued my black kitty (her name is Neesha) the end of last year. My ex's friend's cat had a litter of kittens and there was one black kitten out of about 7 others (who weren't black). They had adopted out all of the other kittens except mine within the first week. They had her for a month and were about to take her to a shelter (They already had 5 cats in their home and couldn't keep any more). No one wanted to adopt her :(

I found her sleeping in my closet when I got home from work one day (after my ex had told me they gave her away!).. he had brought her home.. it was an awesome surprise, I have loved her and spoiled her ever since. She was the runt of the litter too, she is so small! But she is the loviest kitty ever! No to mention sassy and the cutest little thing ever!

My local Humane Society has been running a campaign lately that encourages people to 'adopt your own panther'. They have lots of black cats and are trying to find homes for them. I haven't checked to see if the campaign is working, but I thought that it was a great idea.

It is sad but true. Some Humane Society (not sure where) had a large number of black animals and could not adopt them out. They ran a "Black is Beautiful" campaign to get them homes. They got a lot of adopters out of the campaign but had to stop it because some were offended by the name. Silly but true.

I've heard these tales about black cats for as long as I can remember. I've also heard and read about horrific things people have done to them! When Halloween would come around, black cats were always depicted with yellow slant eyes and their back hunched up, ready to strike! They were bad news!!

Not so! My first cat was a black female tuxedo and while she didn't take to strangers and was extremely independent, she was my heart. I had her for 11 joyful years and when she died, I didn't think I could love another cat as I did her......until BOO! came along.

An all black male cat, he wandered into our apartment building one rainy October night and found his way to our door on the 6th floor! After no one claimed him, my husband and I decided to keep him only because I couldn't stand the thought of turning him out. That was 4 years ago and he is now the love of my life! He's so friendly and loves everyone; no one is a stranger to him! He loves having his neck scratched and we have a ritual that every night for about 10 minutes he jumps into bed to have it done then jumps off and lets me sleep until 7:00 the next morning!

My husband and I adopted a stray because of this. A little black kitten was eating out of the garbage can across the street from us. We asked everyone in the neighborhood, and no one claimed her. We put her in our backyard because it was a week before Halloween, and we didn't want her to come to harm. People are weird; and often around Halloween, people hurt black cats.

Life is what you make it. Why not choose to be happy?

Yes, it is true black cats AND black dogs have trouble being adopted out of shelters and such. It is very sad people have such color blindness

My grandmother's brother was so superstitious, once they were going someplace and a black cat crossed the road in front of him. He stopped the car, turned around and went home. (Nuts, if you ask me.)

I have a Tuxedo cat and have had many black cats in the past. Love them all.

I had a black cat named "Beauty" for 17 yrs until she died. It never occurred to me once...the whole black cat thing....never even ran through my mind. I met Beauty and her brother Beast when my husband and I were walking down the street and found a box full of kitties up for adoption. We chose Beast, who was the alpha kitty of the litter....the most engaged, and Beauty, the runt of the litter, who looked so sweet, which is exactly what she turned out be...total sweetness for 17 blessed years. May she rest in peace and I look forward to seeing her some day on the Rainbow Bridge. emoticon

I have an all black kitty named Max as you can see. I adopted him from a private cat rescue. I have heard that people are afraid of black cats and that they are of witches and of the devil. Many are not adopted out because of their color. I think it's so sad. I was so excited when I found Max on the rescue web site. We are so happy to have him. He sleeps with me all night.

About a year and a half ago, my wife rescued a very sick all black cat responding to an ad from the SPCA. No one knew how sick she was, we thought she was pregnant but she had a serious infection in her uterus and when we took her in for spaying it was discovered and she had more serious surgery than we expected. She is fine now and a real joy to us as we had lost two dear kitty friends not too long before.

What I found interesting is that my wife told me that there is a lot superstitious prejudice against black cats and that she was told that they are many times never adopted and have to be put down. This seemed ridiculous to me and still does but apparently its true.

Are there others out there that have had the same experience?
