A few of my cats are on the heavy side but holy cow. My in laws have the fattest cat I've ever seen. I saw him today and yelled "Holy S**t!" and then felt bad for swearing in front of my in laws. Unfortunately, he's on special food for crystals and I guess its fattening? But man, you could put a saddle on that guy and ride him to work!

Offer them what they secretly want and they of course immediately become panic-stricken. ~ Jack Kerouac

Fortunately, my aging (11-year-old) kitties are still fairly active -- chasing each other around the house. Their weight doesn't seem to have varied much. I'll find out for sure next month when I take them to the vet for their annual checkups.

I think the fact that Stinky gets *no* exercise is the biggest problem. He truly spends almost his entire life in his basket. He does get out to eat and use the litter box, but that's about it. He used to socialize a bit more but he doesn't like the dog we got last June who's very hyper. Stinky is a peace and quiet type.

This is a riot! I just took my girls to the vet, and they seem to be about normal. They were very skinny, got fixed and got really fat. I don't like to let them go outside, but when I do, they get the exercise they need, running after birds. It's funny watching the consternation on their faces when the birds start to fly.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but thought I'd let you know that Stinky is now 14 pounds, down from 17 lbs in November. We were at the vet today, and he told me Stinky has 2 pounds to go. He already feels a lot less squishy.

Well, Frey just came back from the vet this weekend, and I'm told at almost twelve pounds he's about as big as he really should be. This is the new vet in the new city, and I didn't want to tell her that the cat has actually lost weight: he used to be 13.5lbs.

I'll have to see if the carrier will sit on our scale. It's worth a try! I agree it's hard to see around him. :-). I'll post another update in a month.

Ok, so if you can't 0 them, just note down how much the carrier weighs? much easier then trying to look past a cat to see the number on the scales lol

Hmmm .. I don't think I can 0 our scales. But that's the way we do it at the vet. So far I've just weighed him at home by holding him, then subtracting my weight.

Stinky's two month update.

He has definitely lost 1 pound. So down to 16 from 17. It's amazing, but he already feels better to me. I don't have to fish around as much to find his ribs :-). I guess percentage wise, that's like a 170 lb human losing 10 pounds over 2 months. So I think we'll just keep feeding him the weight loss diet from the vet.

How are the rest of your "round cats" doing?

My fat cat is Gracie Lu. (named after Miss Congeniality) I don't know how much she weighs right now, but she gained it all when she got fixed shortly before meeting the kids for the first time. And that was the 6 week visit in the summer, so she speant a lot of time hiding and sleeping. She gets used to them now when they visit and actually comes out to play. But she just hasn't lost the weight. I switched to Iams indoor, because she's not the only cat we have. Sierra Rae (it was suppose to be the name of our ranch if we ever won the lottery, yeah right) is thin and very social. I never thought about taking the food away after 10 minutes. I just scoop out 1/4 cup in each bowl and leave it all day and then it's gone and I scoop another 1/4 cup for the evening and leave it all night. Gracie needs to be a Sparkcat. They love the laser dot game and yarn tied to a stick and dragged along the floor game. Lately Gracie has taken to attacking the catnip Lionfish. (stuffed toy with catnip in the belly that can be replenished) Went to Petsmart this weekend and speant $50 on those two and the 4 Grandkitties in Nebraska. Ouch. I'll have to keep coming back here to get tips for miss spoiled crazy.

Sandi,
That's exactly what I did! But my scale isn't accurate, so if I try two times (which I did both with him and without him) I often get .5 pound difference. So with two half pound differences, that's how I got all the different possibilities for his weight loss. I guess I could just get a better scale, but really it's good enough for me whose weight varies by far more than that day to day anyway.

And Synn, Stinky didn't like it at first either, but he's pretty accepting now. He was getting just too gross to pick up, and I know it's bad for his health to be so squishy.

Jenny,

LMAO. Try this to weigh your kitty. Hold him and stand on the scale. Write that number down. Stand on the scale NOT holding him. Write that number down. Subtract 2nd number from 1st number.

I did Stinky's one month weigh in this weekend, but on our own scale, it's really hard to tell. After several tries, all I can say is that he's lost either 0, 0.5, or 1 pound! I need to take him to the vet.

It's tricky for a pet who doesn't weigh all that much. Even at 17 pounds, 1 pound would be a huge percentage of his weight. I may have to wait longer to know how he's doing.

Yes, it just took a few days before he seemed to accept that he was only getting access to food twice a day. Now he meows when I get up in the morning until I feed him, but seems happy the rest of the day.

I weighed Stinky today, and he was 16.5 pounds, down from 17 when I weighed him 2.5 weeks ago. I'm not sure how accurate that is, since I just weighed him on our home scale with me holding him, but I'm hopeful that he's headed in the right direction. Our vet had said to wait 4 weeks before weighing him, but I was wondering if I was still feeding him too much, and wanted to make sure he wasn't gaining. I'll weigh him again at the 4 week mark, and post a new picture (hopefully one that doesn't flatter his figure as much as the first one does!)

I just put a photo from today of Stinky on my web page. He doesn't look so fat in the picture, but he really is. I'll post a new one every 4 weeks.

Michelle,
Yes some vets really nickle and dime you. I know what they do is pretty sophisticated but ....

Danyell,
I think like your cats, Stinky eats for something to do. I'm hoping we get can him moving around the house and playing more. I'm sure that will help.

2 of my cats need to diet, Chloe is 15 lbs and Bella is 13. I think they eat just to be eating, not because they are hungry. Someone on this team mentioned the dry food having lots of carbs and that we should feed them more canned food than dry. My vet mentioned that at my last visit as well. So, I'm going to try to ween them off of having dry food out all the time. Oh...they are gonna be hating me!!

Chloe, thanks for the laugh, that was a good one!

We don't have to pay when we bring out pets into weigh. Yes I think weighing him at home would be enough to detect a big weight loss. I don't know why I didn't think about that.

Thought I would post this new diet for my fellow cat fanciers found it when looking for a joke for my own two teams enjoy

The Cat Miracle Diet
Most diets fail because we stubbornly continue to think and eat like humans. For those us who have never had any success dieting there is the new Miracle Cat Diet! Except for cats that eat like people -- such as getting lots of table scraps -- most cats are long and lean (or tiny and petite). The Cat Miracle Diet will help you achieve the same lean, svelte figure as a cat. Just follow this diet for one week and you'll find that you not only look and feel better, but you will have a whole new outlook on what constitutes food. Good Luck!

DAY ONE

Breakfast: Open can of expensive gourmet cat food. Any flavour as long as it cost more than seventy-five cents per can. Eat one bite of food then look around room disdainfully. Knock the rest on the floor. Stare at the wall for awhile before stalking off into the other room.

Lunch: Four blades of grass and one lizard tail. Throw it back up on the most expensive carpet in your house.

Dinner: Catch a moth and play with it until it is almost dead. Eat one wing. Leave the rest to die.

Bedtime snack: Steal one green bean from your spouse's or partner's plate. Bat it around the floor until it goes under the refrigerator. Steal one small piece of chicken and eat half of it. Leave the other half on the sofa. Throw out the remaining gourmet cat food from the can you opened this morning.

DAY TWO

Breakfast: Pick up the leftover chicken from the sofa. Knock it onto the carpet and bat it under the television set. Chew on the corner of the newspaper as your spouse/partner tries to read it.

Lunch: Break into the fresh French bread that you bought as your part of the dinner party on Saturday. Lick the top of it all over. Take one bite out of the middle of the loaf.

Afternoon snack: Catch a large beetle and bring it into the house. Play toss and catch with it until it is mushy and half dead. Allow it to escape under the bed.

Dinner: Open a fresh can of dark-coloured gourmet cat food -- tuna or beef works well. Eat it voraciously. Walk from your kitchen to the edge of the living room rug. Promptly throw up on the rug. Step into it as you leave. Track footprints across the entire room.

DAY THREE:

Breakfast: Drink part of the milk from your spouse's or partner's cereal bowl when no one is looking. Splatter part of it on the nearest polished aluminium appliance you can find.

Lunch: Catch a small bird and bring it into the house. Play with on top of your down filled comforter. Make sure the bird is seriously injured but not dead before you abandon it for someone else to have to deal with.

Dinner: Beg and cry until you are given some ice cream or milk in a bowl of your own. Take three licks/laps and then turn the bowl over on the floor.

FINAL DAY:

Breakfast: Eat six bugs, assorted varieties, being sure to leave a collection of legs, wings, and antennae on the bathroom floor. Drink lots of water. Throw the bugs and all of the water up on your spouse's or partner's pillow.

Lunch: Remove the chicken skin from last night's chicken-to-go leftovers your spouse or partner placed in the trash can. Drag the skin across the floor several times. Chew it in a corner and then abandon.

Dinner: Open another can of expensive gourmet cat food. Select a flavour that is especially runny, like Chicken and Giblets in Gravy. Lick off all the gravy and leave the actual meat to dry and get hard.

Jenny, can't you just weigh Stinky at home every 4 weeks rather than bring him in to the vet and have to pay for each visit? That is what I do anyway. I weigh myself, then weigh myself holding the cat. Works like a charm.

Chloe isnt really a cat in need of a diet but she does eat Hills Science Diet from day one. My vet turned me on to the stuff when I was dealing with Teagrae's urinary tract problems. She uses a hairball formula because she sheds like crazy and I worry about blockages.

Stinky started his diet today. He was already too fat, and just blew up when we started leaving food out all the time last February to help out Rocky who was losing weight. Right now he's over 17 pounds. He's a big cat, but probably should weigh about 10 or 11.

Our vet recommended Medi-cal weight reduction formula. Medi-cal is a canadian (i think) company that's kind of like Hill's prescription diet, only selling through vets. We'll tinker with the amount, as we're not sure if he really needs the recommended amount. He's pretty inactive, sleeping most of the day away. We'll feed him twice daily, and remove the food after 10 minutes.

My two boys have promised to each play with him at least once a day. Hopefully that will get him moving around a bit.

Our vet told us to bring him in to weight every 4 weeks so we know if we need to adjust the plan. I'll keep you posted.

Any other sparkcats out there?

Jenny
