They do sound like they're doing OK. Always good to hear a happy ending - but it will be happier when your A/C is fixed altogether right!?

Stay calm and carry on.

If they are just seeking cool places, and not panting, they are probably okay.

If they are panting and warm... soak them down with LUKEWARM (NOT COLD) water.

I had to do that one summer when my AC died, and my longhairs were feeling the heat.

They actually seem to be OK. We have tile floors and they have been stretched out on those and our granite countertops. I tried the cool water on their paws yesterday but they were having none of that. They are drinking and eating and seem to be relatively active.

The repair guy will be here this afternoon! Will keep you all posted. It was HOT HOT HOT in the apartment yesterday! But not 135 degrees!

According to a program I watched on Animal Planet, cats can tolerate heats up to 135 degrees (I don't even want to think how that was determined). When I didn't have air, I would cool Growltiger and I with a cool (not cold) bath. We were fine. Alternatively see if one of your friends can put both of you up for the day.

Ooh, sorry to hear about the A/C prob. I hope by the time you read this you'll have your A/C situation under control. If you can open your windows only an inch or so that might be better than nothing.

You can also try keeping any tile floors you may have as well as your bathtub/shower stall doors open so they can lay on the cool tile. Hot cats will lay on their bellies on cool surfaces to cool down. We have a cat that seems to be "hotter" than the other cats & he frequently lays on our brick fireplace hearth & stretches out to cool off.

Finally, try freezing a small sandwich baggie filled with water & putting that in a larger than usual dish for their water. This will keep the water cold longer, although I'd also keep out an extra bowl of water in case your kitties are afraid of the really cold water. GL & keep us updated.

Stay calm and carry on.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. We have ceiling fans, which are going full tilt right now. I'm actually still at work, but when I get home, I will wipe down their paws with cool water and try the frozen burrito trick (we shouldn't be eating them anyway!!)

Are they panting??? Do they feel hotter then usual??Feel their stomachs and compare them to each other. If really worried take their temps. Should be no higher then about 101.6 . If it's higher, take cool water and
cool pack their pads of their feet(thats where they sweat from) and their stomachs. I bet they are fine. Do you have a fan????

That happened to me too! But I live in Central Florida. I soaked sheets and then wrung them out, hung them from up from the ceiling (well my planter ledge technically) and put a fan behind it, cooled everything down considerably. And as others have said I was constantly give my cat ice and wrapped frozen burritos (she would lay down on top of them poor thing).

Hope this helps.

It's HORRIBLE!!!! Unfortunately, I'm in an apartment, so no basement option.

Will try the ice cube in the water bowl.... hopefully it will be fixed by tomorrow.

Make sure they have plenty of cool, shady places to relax - keep shades down or cover windows temporarily. Put an ice cube in their water bowls. If they are longhair, you may want to consider a trim, shorthairs a good brushing to remove extra hair.

Be careful with the open windows - they can still push out screens and get out.

I sympathize - I'm in So Fla as well and I can't imagine being w/out AC now!!

If you have a basement, I would move them down there; mine is usually cooler than the rest of the house. They can tolerate quite a bit, but when it's hot, I usually close up my house......usually cooler inside than o ut........good luck to you!

I live in South Florida and it's still quite hot here. Our AC has been broken since yesterday and I'm very worried about the cats. We have all of the ceiling fans on and the windows open for some breeze. They have access to plenty of water as well.

The AC repair guy is not coming till tomorrow.

Is there anything else I can do to make the cats more comfortable?
