yes, my misty has always done this, I have gotten larger bowls with a larger bottom in the early years so she couldn't tip them, we now have a drinking fountain for them all (2 cats, 1 dog) that they share, it recirculates the water, and its too big for her to tip over and her lazy son doesn't even have to bend over to get the water, he drinks it out of the fountain part at the top.. silly boy...

I have recently noticed that Jellybean does this. He usually only paws at the water, but occasionally tips over the bowl.

He also likes to dip his paws in his canned food. Maybe I could teach him to use utensil's:)

Mine don't, but I've heard of many I do. One explanation I heard for it was that that's how they check where the water is -- breaking the tension allows them to see it more clearly.

Not sure if it's true or not.

Be thankful, I've also heard of people's cats who will only drink from glasses!

When we take the cats to the river with us..we will fill a bowl with water and put a couple minnows in it. They absolutely love that. They get water everywhere trying to capture their prize. One of the girls (Darlin) is the best at fishing the minnow out..then Friskie eats it.

Our Sophia loves to paddle in her water bowl fisrt, I will have to use the towel trick from now on, she also used to paddle in the sink all the way to her elbos. Prowler loves fresh running sink water. I am glad to see that so many others to also.

One of my cats would always stir and agitate the water bowl and end of having it all over the floor. had to keep a mop nearby but one good thing the floor was always clean. Moo-moo would even scoot the water bowls with reservoir and end up emptying that too. I ended up getting one of those fountain water bowls with reservoir and it doesn't scoot and she gets fresh circulated water. That was what she was wanting. I have another cat, Penny who drops her milk ring toy in it and they both are the only ones out of 10 inside kitty's that dip their paws into the bowl and clean themselves. They remind me of racoon's as they do this. Interesting to see waht all behaviors our cats have.

My female, Daisy, will paw at her water dish then put her face so far into it that she sneezes. She will also look like she is cleaning up around the food and water bowls.
She goes swimming in the toilet, what we call it. Her paws spread out as if she is ready to to the 'kitty' paddle. Lately, we have noticed litter on the seat and seen her use the box then 'wash' her paws. Smart girl but not so nice to sit on puddles in the middle of the night.

One of my 4 cats does this! He paws it then rubs his paw off on the placemat I have under the bowl and lots of times he takes his toys and drops them in the water too!! He loves when I put ice in the bowl and he can paw at it.

My skidaddlez drinks water from her paw. She will dip her paw in the water, and then lick it off her paw. She does this for a quite a while until she has had enough water. Sometimes she'll drink directly out of the water fountain we have for them.

She eats her food that way too, dips her paw into the wet food and then lick it off. It's cute.

Make it a good day,

I was told that pawing the water goes back to their wild days. Large cats supposedly paw the water before they drink to clear it. My Lily is now 16+ and still does that once in awhile.

My cat pumpkin likes to paw at the water in his bowl before he drinks from it. He has tipped the bowl over so many times. And when he doesn't tip it over, he splashes water everywhere. It has gotten to the point where I put a towel under the water dish and don't fill it all the way up.

Do any of you have this problem?
