If you want more exercise for your cat, get the Cat Dancer. Its just wire and cardboard rolls, but it bounces and even my non-playful cat loves it! I interact with them and I found a few places that it hangs to play alone.

2 of my 3 cats LOVE catnip. The other one just kind of stands back and watches the other two freak out over it. We only give it to them every once in a great while. I actually gave them some last night and we just have a ball watching them play and get posessive over it. I have one cat that I'm pretty sure has a complex b/c he's a big boy (not fat big, just BIG) and hardly ever plays but when we break out the catnip he's a playing fool!! I've gotten live catnip before and it didn't do much for them, they like the dried up stuff better. Oh, and there's some kind of catnip spray we found too that can be entertaining, but the effects don't last as long as the real deal!!

the bag of catnip i got said to give him a TABLESPOON! that sounded a little excessive. i got him a bag of "Greenies" and i figure i'll sprinkle a PINCH of catnip on top of that -- my parents' cat loves that combination. we'll see how it goes. i give him a tiny bit of tuna after i have to give him his eardrops. he LOVES the tuna!

I grow cat grass and cat nip. Spunky loves both, Storm prefers catnip, and Mocha prefers grass. Just watch how much you give them as too much is never good and it can upset their tummies (I know this too well). I grow both in my condo in hanging pots so they don't overeat the plants.

For women, catnip tea (its in the tea family) eases cramps and such.

I had a cat that would even look at treats or catnip. Now I am not sure I haven't tried it with my cats now. Maybe I will all I know is that if I do I may try to grow some w/ my grandma their great grandma. She likes to grow the cat grass for her cat Midnight who does not get out much anymore. She was attacked last fall by neighborhood dogs we believe, but are not able to prove. She stayed a week at our vets office and it took about 6 weeks for the bite holes to heal up. Maybe come spring we will grow some grass and nip in a basket for all our babies.

great question! I've always wondered this myself.

i guess the only pro i've ever found is that they're getting a treat, without any extra calories. hey, they gotta worry about their weight sometimes too!

we tend to give them treats almost every weekend. sometimes 2x/weekend. when i feel that they've gotten too used to getting treats, i like to mix it up on them and give them catnip. and boy do they love it!

My cats love to rub against their toys that have fresh catnip in it, except for one, Cassie. Cassie has a strange response. She becomes irritated and mad at the catnip. I've never seen a cat get so mad at something as getting the catnip close to her.

GROW YOUR OWN CATNIP ITS WONDERFUL AND EASY TO DO...

I HAD A HUGE PATCH THAT KEPT RETURNING EACH SUMMER THE CATS LOVED TO ROLL AROUND IT (IT REALLY WRECKED THE BUSHES AND THEY LOOKED LIKE A REAL MESS AFTERWARDS BUT SOON RECOVERED AND GREW AGAIN).

CATS REALLY LOVED IT.

IT WAS A GREAT SOCIALISER AS WELL BECAUSE ALL THE OTHER CATS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD USED TO COME OVER AND VISIT JUST TO ROLL IN THE BUSHES ALSO. IT WAS FUNNY TO SEE THEM ALL LINED UP PATIENTLY WAITING FOR THE CURRENT 'ROLLER' TO FINISH...EVEN THE AGGRESSIVE ONES THAT USED TO FIGHT EACH OTHER CALMED DOWN AS THEY INDULGED THEMSELVES....

these are all a great help -- thank you! i never through of growing my own catnip -- the kids would love that project!

re: addicted kitties, my Tough Guy was addicted to Pounce. i had him before i had my son, and i actually wrote in my journal back then that too much of a good thing is NOT a good thing! Guy used to make me CRAZY looking for his "Pounce" treats! so i learned (before i had kids) to keep a treat a TREAT and don't over-do it. i finally got Guy back on a once-a-day schedule with it. it was a good lesson for a soon-to-be mom!

I dunno about benefits but I've got a bunch of stoners here! All I have to do is bring out the baggie of bud and they rush me! (I buy the catnip flower buds..lol)Gracie does get the munchies soon after but the other two get so zoned they can only stare out the window cross-eyed! Kind of like me in my long long ago stoner days (daze)...lol :D Duuude..I relate emoticon emoticon

I always heard it was good if they ate it for their digestion, but have never read this anywhere. know it doesn't hurt them to eat it. it's all in the smell, how they get their reaction. Not by eating it. Each cat reacts differently. Some not at all. Some get relaxed and some get hyper and playful. young kitties may not react to it until they get older. I have several that can use the exercise and give it to them all to get 'em going and get in some exercise. Too bad it doesn't work on humans that way, i'd be an exercising fool!!! On the other side, If your cat gets relaxed then you know what to give them if you need him/her to calm down, such as a ride to vet. Most of mine like their own little pinch and space to eat, sniff and roll in, then after a while they all get to playing and romping around with each other. Sometimes a spat or two. Also said to be good for humans as in catnip tea and other recipes.

Some like it, some don't. I have found, however, my cats prefer the local catnip, not the regualr stuff at the store. It's fresher and, apparently, tastier.

There is a site online called "aboutcats.com" or something like that and I have learned a lot from them about cats. The message that I saw on there about catnip is that some cats love it and some do not care a thing about it. It didn't mention anything beneficial about catnip other than if your cat like it, the cat has a ball with it, and you get the enjoyment of watching you cat have a ball with it...LOL.

I have found catnip to help bring our pets closer to us.

If you can try fresh catnip if can find this. Mine love when I bring home fresh from my parents home.

One step at a time!

I am not sure, all I know is that they toys I have given her has catnip in it and she likes to play with them a lot. That would be good to know about the benefits and such. Thanks for asking this question.

hello ... we brought our new kitty home last week. Cricket is S.L.O..W..L...Y adapting to his new environment. we've practically had to check a for a pulse, he sleeps so much.

anyway, ten years ago, i used to give my persian Guy a treat ("Pounce") each night. my parents do something similiar with their cat -- they give her "Greenies", i think they're called, and sprinkle it with a bit of catnip every night.

is there a benefit to catnip?
are there pros and cons?
