Lisa,

Oh yes, my son is VERY healthy. He is actually my biggest cheerleader to get myself back in shape. We both are black belts in Tae Kwon Do, and when I was taking class I was in incredible shape. Then I started teaching and I didn't get the work outs that I got when taking class. I worked for a place out here in Lehigh and worked my little tail off teaching the kids and loving it until the owner of the place started acting like a jerk and I couldn't do it anymore...considering I never made any money for teaching class I did it because I love martial arts. We both took an Aikido class last year and then I started a program at the Alva Community Center and we couldn't do the Aikido classes. Now our program has ended and my son wanted to take Aikido again so I thought it was a perfect time for us both to join the gym and he could do Aikido if he wanted...I'm martial artsed out for the moment..maybe in a few months I'll join him...we'll see...plus I am trying to make him a bit more independent and trying to break those apron strings so him doing this on his own will be good for him. I did, however, put together a great women's self defense class, but have never been able to put it into action. Some day I will!

Anyway, yes, my son is my encouragement...he really pushes me to eat better and to exercise. He does it in such a way though that I know it is because he loves me. Since he lost his father 8 years ago he realizes that I am all he has and he takes his roll as man of the house very seriously. So he makes sure mom takes care of herself...and the fact that we will be able to run races together is something he just loves!! Our neighbor is a runner as well so we will hit those 5 k and 10 k races together...it will be fun!

Thanks for starting this team. This is just the kind of group I needed to help keep me motivated. You guys are fabulous!!

Hi Caroline,

Yes, Welcome, welcome, welcome : )

Slinkie has a great idea of having challenges. And motivation is definately something we want to have here for the team...after all it is created to offer support to the local sparkers here in the CCL counties.

I wanted to give it a couple of weeks to get the team up and running and get introductions for everyone so we can all meet each other. There are tons of runners and walkers here on the team...this is the place I can see you are going to gain the motivation you are looking for hopefully.

Your son sounds wonderful and kudos to him for being so healthy. That is awesome.

I will post in the discussion thread soon about challenges and what ideas the team may have for them.

Happy Sunday.

Hi, Caroline, and welcome to the team! There are so many places here at SP where you can read and gain motivation. Maybe once our team gets up to full power we can have some challenges for some of our goals.

I'll be leaving in a week for a vacation but the team is growing and I won't be missed. See you later.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. My name is Caroline and I am a single mother to one 14 year old young man. I am working my way up to running as well. I have been running for one minute and walking for two, but am going to be starting the c25k program as well next week. My young man is a runner and I would love to be able to run with him. I have walked a few 5k's so that he could be involved, but I would rather run. Plus many of the people who work at the school where I work also run in 5 and 10 k races and I would love to join them as well.

My dieting life has been a roller coaster. The ups and downs of my life have not helped. Right now things are good and getting better, now that I have a good stable job and my self worth is much better. I am feeling good and am ready to get into my work outs again. I did run for a period of time last year, but lost my motivation. I was actually running the track at our school and getting ready in the PE teacher's locker room. That worked well, except for the fact that my son made it very difficult because he gave me such a hard time about getting up so early. I thought I was going to be able to do this same thing this coming year since he will be going to high school but our Principal had other ideas and is putting me to work bright and early at 7 a.m. for our morning program. It will be good overtime, but I will have to figure out another work out time then. My son and I are starting to go to the gym in the afternoon when I get off of work. My son also takes Aikido at the community center which is where the gym is so we both try to go about 5 days a week. Hopefully we will just continue this after summer break and school gets started again.

Anyway, that is probably more than you wanted to know about me...lol. I look forward to meeting all of you and getting to know you all better here!

Thanks!
Caroline

Hi Cheryl (Spenser1)--

Maddi is six and is truly amazing. We are all so glad to have HER as she was a huge surprise since we were expecting little BENJAMIN. Yes, we were told she was a boy...LOL So imagine the surprsie and a real blessing as she was my last child and the nine months of carrying her were filled with experiences I will never forget.

I am interviewing at a counseling center in Ft. Myers. Cant wait.

Hi Lisa, how old is your daughter, Maddi? My dtr Erin is 13 - the baby of the family. I also have a 5 yr old granddaughter.

Where are you interviewing? Good luck with that.
I haven't exercised any more this week. Brutal work week with several meetings and my knee is still swollen from that fall I took Mon night. Klutz!

Hello to everyone else as well! Have a great weekend!

Hi Team!1 Hope everyone is having a fantastic and awesome Thursday. I love hearing all the running discussions. This year I did the 5K walk for Breast Cancer. How rewarding. I think when I get settled, I plan to do some more...sounds like there are lots to choose from down that way. : )

Hey guys! Quick post before bed...12 hour shifts at the pharmacy kill me...especially when my husband gets me up at 5:30 am to jog with him.

Has anyone checkout Jeff Galloway's website on running? He's a strong advocate of walking breaks rather than straight running.

I tried a 2min jog/1 min walk this morning and found much easier on my joints. I could push harder on the runs when I knew it was going to end in 2 minutes. Plus, interval training is a much more effective way to burn body fat. All in all it sounds like a win-win.

Welcome to all the newcomers!

~Linda

hey cheryl the good thing about getting back into running is you are in good company! most adult runners i know started out only being able to run so long for so far...lol.

slow is good. slow is our friend. slow can still get you from start to finish line at a race. i'm always happy just to finally reach the finish...who cares how fast i got there...lol

i downloaded a podcast for a C25K program -- http://www.podcasts.ullreys.net/ -- to confess i got mine from itunes, but thats the site of the fellow who created the podcast. funnily enuff i downloaded it a few years AFTER i started running in 5ks, but now i use it as part of my training.

one day i'll finish a 5k in less than my usual 36-40 minutes (12 min miles are respectible i suppose)

Hi Ma....so glad you joined...wow, you are so active....love that you lead water aerobics....that is great. I have good friends in MN...and they are sparkers also. Cant wait to get to know you more.

Spenser....I think I probably cant run more than a minute or two also. I love to walk though and love to dance...it gets rid of negative energy for me. And...it is a great bonding experience for my daughter (Maddi) and I.

Hi Everyone

A retiree from Minnesnowta here. I live in a 55 plus MHP in S Ft Myers.

I am very active during the seasonal months. Things have slowed down considerably so I am going to take 7 weeks this year and go back to MN to spend some quality time with family and friends. I have been in Florida for 7 years as a permanent resident.
I love being able to exercise 12 mo out of the year.

During season I direct a Weight Loss Group and lead a water aerobic class twice a week. I also have a private Spark Team called STOP (sensibly Take Off Pounds.

I alredy wrote an intro once, then my computer did something weird or was it my provider - I am not sure but I better post before it does it again.

Good to be here. MA

Hullo Ebby - I love the Penguin too! Trying to get back to running right now, I love how I feel after, although right now I can only run for a minute or two at a time and slowly. I'd like to run a 5K eventually!

Hi everyone-wow how this team keeps growing...how exciting!!!

Amy (BeachChic)...sounds like your dad loves doing what I do as well. I am also in the human services and social work field. Pat him on the back for me. : )

RBroski-So glad you made your intro..HI!!! : ) Man, are you ever busy....but think of how excited and how special that awesome house is gonna be when it is done. And that is a major workout...fixing up a house...wow!!! Pat yourself on the back too...whoo hoo!!!

Hi SHolloway---how awesome you are formerly from Michigan. That is where my mind is at these days...I sit here in Michigan and feel like my home is in FL and feel like I am waiting to get home. Soon...very soon. Whereabouts in MI were you from? I am from the Lansing area. Keep up the motivation in MI .....maybe your family will walk or workout with you.???

Dawn-you can do this...for starters go back and reread your posts and take a notepad and write down all the things that you want for yourself out of them. Then find in those posts all the positive things that can help and attribute to making you healthier...not "skinny", but a healthier, happier person that you want to be. Start there.....really sounds goofy, but it took me from Jan 06 to Labor Day to "get ready, get set....GO!! " so to speak. I meant it when I said I am your new supporter if ya want me to be. I am here for ya girlie...you can do this.

Ebby-I know.....look at how fast the team is growing....we can have picnics soon....and healthy ones at that...Yes!!! LOL

Hugs everyone.

I'm so happy to see all of you here. In reading all the intros and Spark Pages, I would gather that I'm the senior member here at 68 years. I'm sure you'll excuse me from the running events, although I am a serious walker, logging an average of 10,000 steps a day by my pedometer. I'm determined to shed the excess pounds this summer and then to keep them off. I look much better trim and have more energy to get around and enjoy life.

A bit more about me: I'm a retired medical transcriptionist, also a former serious cat breeder and exhibitor of Siamese and Oriental cats, with grand champions in both breeds. I retired from that hobby as well, and now that I live in a Florida condo I have only the outdoor wildlife to admire.

My four children are grown and two have children from 5 to 17 years old. My hubby has two children and two grandchildren. All of them live in NE Ohio, and we visit them a few times a year, besides the trips they make down here to visit us. We'll see them next in early July.

We love to cruise, and have taken several the past few years including one around the world in '05. Our next one comes in a couple of weeks, Boston to Nova Scotia and back to Boston. We'll spend another week driving to see our families in Vermont, New York and Ohio. My challenge will be to maintain my weight loss during that trip.

Happy Tuesday to all, and stay healthy!

Hi all:

Thanks for the invite to the team. I did not realize there was so many of us in the area. I live in Naples but I'm originally from Michigan. Now that it is warm, I am going back for 2 months or so to spend time with my family. I am married with two children that are the sunshine of my life. I work from home in a position that requires me to travel a lot.

I live in a community that has an awesome fitness center. However, it is closed on Mondays (until season). I will need a lot of motivation while in Michigan. I've recently started to play racquetball so I am going to try to find a facility to play while in Michigan.

I am very happy to see this new team. I need all the motivation I can get. Life always seems to busy wife work, being a mother to two very young girls and a wife. Plus we are totally remodeling the house that we bought last year. It is the house that I grew up in which is cool, but also means that it is old and needed a lot of updating. We are almost done and I look forward to getting refocused on fitness. I have lived in Lehigh almost all of my life. I have a treadmill and a big home gym so I think that I am going to try to start getting back into a normal routine.

Hello to everyone,
Lisa, thank you for inviting me to this team! It's a little difficult jumping into an existing team; starting out fresh is great.
I'm 45, single, have one daughter (24) and a 3-yr old grandson who is the most perfect boy in the world. Come October, I will also have a granddaughter. I live on my own with my 3 dogs. I live and work in Ft. Myers. I work as purchasing for a national company that specializes in radiation therapy, but is starting to branch out into other specialties.
I'm one of those professional dieters; been doing it on and off for most of my life; could tell you calorie, fat, carbs, etc. for food, the importance of exercise, done everything. The past 5 years (since hitting 40 - interesting!)I've really let myself go, lugging around over 150 lbs - now before you groan, I will tell you that I am only 5 ft tall, and a few pounds really make a difference. My problem has been accountability. Back in April, we got Weight Watchers at Work, and so far I am down almost 14 lbs. Getting active again is the next milestone; I have to remind myself how good I'll feel when I'm done. I'm counting on this team of athletes to motivate me! My goal is to lose 25 more pounds before October.
Good to meet all of you!

Go Jim!!! : ) As far as the thanks for setting up the team..."No, thank you" TEAM comes from all of us...we are going to make this Great!!!

Linda i usually run in the early morning, b4 the sun comes up. its cooler (sometimes) and its the only time i can consistently seem to stick with. roll out of bed, feed dogs & cat, sleepwalk into my running clothes, walk the dogs, come back grab ipod and hit the road for the run by 6am (during the fl winter i'd get out for my run by 5:45 or 5:30....don't ask why...my honey thought i was NUTZ) and i can't find one soul in my neighborhood to join me at that time of morning.

now i say i run, but some days its an interval run walk. or a run slow, run a tiny tiny bit faster interval. i'm no speed demon by any stretch. but i do like challenging myself when i have time.

i'm currently looking for a local 10k to test myself on...scary thought though that is...lol

and 9 miles in a little over 2 hours is about how long it would take me...IF i was having a pretty good day...lol you rock mz shuffler...lol

Dawn--Maybe you can find someone who belongs to your gym that has a similar schedule and can train with you? I agree it's tough motivating yourself. I've gone through several training partners. They can't seem to hang on to the 6:30am workouts...lol...my shift is 9-9 so that's the only time I can go if I'm working that day.

Jim--Thanks for the info! Maybe one year I'll see you there. The swim is the part I'd really need to train for. I'll check out the links.

Runninggirl--You're a nut! :) You're just like my husband who doesn't mind runnning in this heat. I'm a wimp. I'm just starting to train for the Gasparilla 1/2 marathon in Tampa in February. We did the 15k last year, and it wasn't so bad (except for the chafing on my arms of all things!...I'll use the bodyglide for sure next year)

Ebby--I'm actually more of a "shuffler" rather than a runner. I completed a 15k (9.3 miles) in 2 hours last year without walking. Granted I wasn't moving very fast, but it was still fun. My husband got me hooked on races too. It definitely adds some spice to just running for the sake of running.

Well, today I managed to get some exercise in even though I was feeling exceptionally lazy. I did the Spark weight training program that was scheduled for today and then I did 30 minutes of a step video. Woohoo! One day at a time.

Linda,

Yes i know about the side effects :) i read up on all of it i figured like my Dr said it will teach you a valuable lesson if you cheat, i can cheat on this for a couple reasons, the "effects" for one, im a waitress and thats all i need!!!! and the cost is number 2 i will not pay 70.00 a month and cheat, yeah i said that about my 65.00 a month YMCA membership i dont use, i hate to work out alone, i even got an iPod but still like to have someone else with me yelling at me saying lay off the reese cup or stop eating that bowl of cereal at 10pm at night

thanx for inviting me lisa! i'm in Lehigh Acres and i'll be 44 august 22nd. i moved down here 11 years ago (wow!) from NYC. i didn't think i'd be here this long when i first arrived, but after my divorce in 2002 i decided to stay and really make a life for myself and by myself. i turned 40 in SW Fl and this isn't a bad place to do so....lol

i have awesome friends that are as maddening and loving as any family can be. (see you can make friends in this transient state) i learned how to swim (at the FGCU aquatics center), i now count kayacking, camping & swimming as newly acquired pasttimes of mine.

i quit smoking 5 years ago (may 12). i'm also a runner (this as a result of the smoke quit and the need to replace a bad habit with a good habit). i started running on treadmills at the university gym. i didn't like running but it helped keep me from gaining too much too fast after the smoke quit. a friend encouraged me to do the 5k at the edison festival in 2004. my first time ever doing something like that and what a rush! i've been hooked ever since. i didn't used to like running because i never thought of myself as a runner, but somehow a shift occured in my thinking and yep...i'm a runner...lol not a fast one, but i get out there and i do the do. (the penguin is my hero btw...lol)

the only kids i have are my fur kids. but i'm okay with that. i have a guy friend that i'm crazy about. he's a massage therapist (he makes house or work calls so let me know if anyone is interested) and i'm working my way very slowly towards finishing my BA in English.

hope i haven't bored ya.

maybe i'll see some of you on the road as we run towards the finish line

Hello! Thanks for the invitation! I am also a runner in Naples and I love getting outside, even when it is 90+ degrees outside. I ran the past half marathon and plan on running a few more races this month, including the July 4th at Bayfront, I think. Anyone else going to run it? Easy 5k, but nice to get out and compete occasionally.

Hi Josemooner:

Yes, the Naples Fitness Challenge Triathlon is an annual event held at the Naples Beach Club Hotel and Golf Course. The distance for the run is 5K (3.1 Miles), 15K for the bike (9 plus miles)and 1/4 mile for the swim.

These are not big distances and just about anyone can do it with a little training. Anyone interested can get complete details at the following URL:
bikeroutenaples.com

There is a link there to the Naples Daily News coverage along with a picture gallery and a short video. You should see the video to get an idea of what the high surf was like on June 3rd as a result of the freak storm.

Hi, Josemooner, and I'm happy to welcome you to the CCL team!

Yes, I was very happy to finally hit the 120 mark yesterday. I have had to work really hard, with miles of walking and a lot of tough exercises every day, along with a very healthy eating pattern that I've followed for many years.

You're right about the lifestyle causing most medical problems, and if you watch young people today you'll see what is in store for them in the decades to come.

Hello everyone! Thanks for the invitation. I've been slacking lately on the boards here. Funny how work gets in the way.

I've been in Cape Coral since 1990 and love it here in Florida. Lisa, you're going to love it. You've got a great attitude.

I'm 43 and work as a pharmacist. I also teach aerobics on the side...fitness is my true passion, but the money is in drugs ( I can't teach 8 hours a day)...lol...the true irony is that I would never take what I sell. About 90% of all the medication I dispense could be avoided/eliminated with lifestyle changes. How sad is that? It's nice to be connected to a group of people who are trying to improve their lifestyle.

I've been stuck at the same weight for years now, and it's time to take off the final 10 or so.

My husband just informed me that he would like us to run a 1/2 marathon in February. That should help!

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Cheryl--congrats on your soon to be BSN.

Amy--Nice to meet you!

Slinkie--Awesome job hitting your goal! I hope to join you soon.

Dawn--YOU CAN DO IT! I'm telling you...most of my customers could avoid all their diabetic complications with just a few lifestyle changes. You are on the right path. Keep it up. :) Alli can help, but ultimately lifestyle changes have to be made a permanent part. Not to be gross, but just be careful with "anal oily leakage" with the Alli. I've had several customers on the prescription version (xenical) tell me about that. If you have too much fat in the meal, the medication will stop your body from absorbing most of it, but unfortunately it has to go somewhere...so it sort of "leaks" out. I don't mean to be so blunt, but I'd hate for you to experience what happened to my customer (she was wearing white pants). OK...TMI...I know...sorry.

Jim--congrats on the triathlon! That's something I've always been interested in. Do they have it every year? What are the distances on the bike, run and swim?

That's all for now. Make it a great day!

~Linda

Good morning, Dawn. Such a cute little boy in your photo! Congratulations on quitting smoking! I did that myself and have never regretted it, even though it means strict control of my diet and exercise for the rest of my life. SP is helping a lot.

Welcome to this team, and I hope we can cheer each other on to success in meeting our goals.

Hi there everyone!

Im Dawn a 31yr old mother of a 3.5yr old. I am on the never ending road of trying to lose weight, i have given up so many times, i need to lose 80lbs at that point my Dr said my Pre-Diabetes would go away, high blood pressure and most likely the high cholesterol.
I have big all my life, i gained a whopping 25lbs in the last 8 months just from quitting smoking, i thought that would be hard, losing weight is harder.

Welcome, Cheryl! I've lived in Naples for four years, full time for two, since we sold our Ohio home to enjoy the tranquility of Florida summers. I'm a retired medical transcriptionist, mother of four, grandmother of five.

I look forward to seeing this group grow and include several more interesting people.

Hello Lisa and otherr team members!
I just got this invite today and joined - thanks!
I've lived in the Ft Myers area about 4 1/2 years and love it here! I'm an RN and I'm finishing my BSN so I've been very focused on school. Soon I will be finished and then I will be able to really get a routine and focus on my weight loss/fitness goals. Looking forward to that! I want to run and ultimately lose about 50 lbs.
Looking forward to talking more with you all!
Cheryl

Hi, Lisa and other team members. I got my invitation today and was pleased to join this group.

I joined SP late in April after my doctor told me to lose 13 pounds and increase my exercise to control my high cholesterol without resorting to drugs.

So far I've dropped all but 5 pounds of my excess, and I'm enjoying all the walking and exercises, getting stronger every day.

It's great knowing we have a team here in SW Florida.

Thanks for the invite. I am always glad to join fellow floridians or floridians to be....
I saw your workout and diet log and you are doing a GREAT job! I guess I can still "eat" and lose weight! When you get to Ft. Myers it will help you to know there are several places where you can do water aerobics. Some are during the day but there is one at the Cape Coral Marina that holds evening classes. Lee county recreation has the info on it's website! Later! Gater! Heartolove

Hi, I am Lisa. I love Florida...especially the Ft. Myers area. I have 3 children and we are planning to relocate their in the next couple of months. We cant wait to get there and start our new life there. We are all excited about this.

I joined Spark in Jan. of 2006 but did not make a true committment until Labor Day of 2006. Since then, I have lost a total of 34 pounds and 31 inches. I feel great. Mostly I have taken an entire hange in how I live my life in a total health/wellness lifestyle. I believe that attitude is everything and with a positive attitude one can accomplish anything they set out to do.

I cant wait to meet everyone. I look forward to becoming a support system to those in the Charlotte, Collier, and Lee Counties and building friendships along the way.
