The last time that happened to me, I was 12 years old, wearing a basketball uniform and had short hair. The person who was confused only saw me from behind.

I'm very curvy, so it's pretty obvious that I am a woman even though I am tall. Most people are confused about my race/ethnicity and whether they should talk to me in Spanish or English, but apparently my gender is clear. :)

Dances: salsa (standard/LA), casino, rueda de casino, cumbia Colombiana, bachata, mambo, cha-cha-chá, merengue, reggaetón.

Currently learning: Mexican cumbia, danzón, Cuban rumba

Dances to Learn in the future: flamenco, tango Argentino, samba, belly dancing, bhangra, ballroom rumba

oh my, I hear sir quite often. I wear lots of skirts too so kind of funny. emoticon

I do have broad shoulders and a large bone frame and have short hair but I wear lots of bandanas and hats too.

I am a huge Chicago cubs fan so when I wear my jack and tee shirt is does not show my womanly curves.

I usually let it off my shoulder but if I'm having an off day watch out. emoticon

People are crazy! You looked awesome (and nothing like a man!). I always get asked the weirdest questions. One guy approached to ask if I was American. He was convinced that a female as tall as I am had to be from Europe! One person asked if I was German...when I told him that I have some German background he said, "Oh, that's why you're so big!"

Not sure why people think it's their place to let you know every little thought that crosses their mind, but it usually comes across as funny and not malicious. I don't think anyone is trying to hurt my feelings although sometimes it does seem so ignorant! We know how awesome tall ladies are and that's what matters emoticon

Well as a guy I would say "NO!" but people as a whole do generalize. They generalize me at the pool when I swim laps in a speedo. Also I have a big chest so if i go running without a shirt I laugh if people do a double take and just think "Guys have pecks." It is all that knee jerk reaction and generalization that happens all the time.

This happens less when I wear shorts, but I get more annoyed by people who can't say my name, like the lady who works at the eye doctor. My name is Georgia. She always calls me (Jor-gee-uh) when she reads it off the list. Last time I just said "You mean Georgia, LIKE THE STATE?" with flat eyes and a "are you stupid" look. Seriously though, 3 times is enough.
Being tall comes with being called Sir when people aren't paying attention. Meh.

Wow! I thought I was the only one. I think I might have been hurt at first, along time ago. But then I realized that maybe people are tired, their eyesight is bad, or whatever. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt I guess. And yes, I do go out looking like a slob sometimes LOL. Doesn't really matter anyhow....

I, too, have gotten the "can I help you, sir" at the checkout--that's hilarious that so many of us have experienced the same thing. I also caught it at a restaurant once. That's actually when my hair was long and I had it up in a clip. The waitress wheeled around the corner to our table and said, "How are you guys this evening?" I wouldn't have thought a thing about it, because in my world "guys" is pretty gender neutral in that context, but she started stuttering and stammering all over the place:"I mean, not guys, but sir and ma'am...uh like I didn't mean to say guys like "guys" but like you know...I uh just didn't look uh I'm like uh so sorry." Really? People for real have noooo social skills. How unfair we are that we actually require people to oh, think, BEFORE they speak. Tall chicks unite!

You only go around once, but if you do it right, once is enough.

I have been called sir at 7-11 a couple of times like yall said when the person does not even bother to look up. I am a PE teacher so my hair is pulled back and i have windpants and a tshirt on. Since so many are shorter than me though, if they bothered to look up they would see my boobs....HELLO! Yes i am most definintely a girl.

Every once in a while when someone in public sees me but isn't really paying attention I'll get sir. Like if I'm turned around in a winter coat and hat. Or a cashier not paying attention. I only had once person that regularly called me Mr. and knew I was a girl. There was a teacher in high school that regularly called people by Mr. or Miss and their last name. He was constantly calling me Mr. Not sure if it was the height or because some people look at my full name quickly and see the male form of the same name, not the feminine form. But there was something a little off with him anyways and the other kids made fun of him for getting it wrong so many times.

I get the sir thing occasionally, too. Usually it's from cashiers who don't bother to look at me as they do the sale. I think it's my height. I deal with it by just standing there and not responding. That forces them to look at me to see why I did not respond. Then they get all flustered! :)

I don't get "sir" - but, like PANBOOKS I get dirty looks from short guys.

Because I live in Hawaii (majority of the population is Asian), I'm taller than the average man and MUCH taller than the average woman. A lot of people look like they're afraid of me!

It just makes me want to laugh! It makes me want to bark or growl at them to really make them afraid!!

I've told this to my mom. I get called 'sir' A LOT. But, she says and many other women that I know do as well, that I don't look like a man at all. (So, obviously it isn't that I'm just manly or something) She thinks it's because I'm so tall. People really just don't pay attention. They assume that because your tall you must be male. (I don't really get it...are males statistically taller or something. Honestly most of the guys I know are average height as well). Either way, it isn't you, trust me. I get it a ton. What's funny is that I'll be wearing a totally fitted top and my boobs are all right there and they're like 'thank you, sir' It made me mad at first, and now I'm just like ...whatever. If you want to have fun with them just don't respond until they get it right.

Sometimes when cashiers don't actually look at you and say "can I help you sir" I"m not sure who is more embarrassed, me or them. But I use it as a wake up call sometimes when I go out the house looking kind of rough...LOL...

This has happened to me a couple times and I used to be sooo self-conscious about it, but now that I'm realizing it's likely I height thing I'm feeling a little better.

I used to think - ok I'm a little overweight but these aren't manboobs, hello? I've never had a super-short haircut either so I just didn't get it.

Cashiers seem to be the worst at that. I just like to stand there and look at them like they're idiots until they finally glance up and turn bright red and stumble over words trying to apologize. It's a small piece of gratification for me...what can I say? I'm twisted!

It's happened to me occasionally as well. I'm 6-1 in my bare feet. It's usually a cashier judging from the corner of their eye, as someone else mentioned.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one!

And yes, high school was not pleasant (but is it for anyone?)

I've been called "sir" a few times by cashiers that judge my height out of the corner of their eye before they look directly at me. It's always fun to watch them try and pretend it didn't happen. They look so flustered!

One time it happened at Starbucks and the girl pretended that she was talking to the guy in line behind me. It was a poor attempt -- she hadn't even taken my order yet, so why would she be taking one from the next person? Nice try.

OMG, I am so glad it's not just me...

When I was 16 I was taller than I am now (6'-2") and I worked as a clerk in a store. A woman customer loudly and "knowledgably" told her friend how I was a transsexual. Right in front of me. I was so mortified, I have never forgotten that.

If that happened recently, I would have given that woman such a piece of my mind that SHE never would have forgotten it!!

We still have a long way to go, but when I was young I heard unkind comments daily about my height. Today, nobody ever says anything. People really are more open-minded and tolerant nowadays.

I get "sir" all the time. Even if I'm wearing hot pink and carrying a purse.

At a bar once I had a guy ask me if I was transsexual. I have a scar on my neck from thyroid surgery that probably threw him off a bit, but I don't think they do cosmetic surgery on Adam's apples.

Glad to see my fellow tall sisters have had similar problems.

I get that a lot. I guess i do wear alot of guys clothes but hey it is comfortable. It also does not help that my family takes GREAT delight in telling me that my hips and bust is disappearing when I lose weight.

Ah well that's how it goes it no longer upsets me the way it used to when I was younger. Case in point the first time I danced with my now husband his friends asked him if he was dancing with a guy!

Don't worry about them and trust me you look NOTHING like a guy!

Haha. You don't look like a man at all - great costume by the way! Most people don't go the extra mile and use the green face paint.

But if it makes you feel better I was called a man-babe once because of my height. According to the man who so aptly nick-named me, I have the stature of a man because I'm so tall, but I'm also an attractive woman so thus, a man-babe. And no, there was no costume involved, just me :)

Back in the day, before babies, weight gain, hips & boobs, I used to get called "sir" all the time. I was tall, shapeless and had short hair. It was annoying, but... Now, I laugh because my son gets called "mam" occasionally because he's got "rock star" hair. LOL

That's because some folks are just knuckleheads! Or maybe they had too many adult beverages for the holiday. I stayed home & handed out candy and I suspected several of the parents walking with the kids had a lil buzz on. It was either that or the almost full moon.

Tall ladies rock -- don't let the shorties get ya down! :)

Why would someone see me dressed as a witch, in a DRESS, and I mean a summery sleeveless dress because it was hot last night, and say as I approach with a trick-or-treating child, "Oh, look, it's a mom . . . or a dad . . . or whatever you are." ?? Seriously? Do I look like a man? Because I'm tall and it doesn't occur to people that moms can be tall too? I can see when we're bundled up in thick coats, hats, gloves, etc. and can't see a shape or much of a face, but even then it's still annoying when people cna't tell what gender we are because we're tall.
