HI Sparkers! We hope that you can join us for our first Potluck/hike combo! Details Below
Date: Saturday, April 6, 2013 Time: 11am-2pm Where: North Mountain Visitors Center Ramada 12950 NORTH 7TH STREET • PHOENIX, AZ 85022
We will hike first then enjoy our healthy potluck lunch. Bring your family and leashed well-behaved dogs. (the park requires that we pick up after animals and humans so bring plastic bags)
During lunch Steve (SAC-6582) will be sharing his inspirational/motivational SparkStory.
The trails are flat at the center unless you choose to hike to one of the near by mountains. Shaw Butte or North. The hike will be easy and as long or short as the group would like.
POTLUCK INFO: Healthy options only. Bring a copy of the recipe and nutrition information. It can be a SparkPeople recipe or any healthy recipe as long as you can provide ingredients and nutrition info. This will help people with special dietary needs or who want to keep track of their food.
Please bring your own plates, eating utensils and drinks.
For the hike bring water, at least 2 liters, snacks and sturdy shoes preferably designed for hiking but good tennis shoes with good tread will work too.
Pack it in Pack it out. This Leave no Trace principal is a must follow. Our goal will be to leave the park cleaner then when we arrived. This is something that I am very passionate about.
There is a Coffee House at the park before our event. If you would like to make a day of it click on this link for more info. www.northmountainvisitorcenter.org/

I'm doing a new event this weekend - a bike tour along the route of the P.F. Chang R'n'R Marathon. Should be fun!
I usually do my hiking on weekends and can't do sharp elevations due to knee replacements. A really nice beginner (easy enough for me to take elementary school grandkids) trail is Gateway Loop - just north of Bell Rd on Thompson Peak. There's a large parking lot, water fountains, restrooms, and maps of the McDowell Mrn trails. Let me know if you're interested for this coming weekend (between black friday and holiday party frenzy) and we can arrange to go togther - it's usually easier to start hiking with someone who's done the trail before. If not, you can search info on Gateway Loop Trail yourself and go any time you feel ready to take the plunge. Carol

Hey is anyone looking for a hiking buddy? I should state that I am a brand new hiker (as in havnt even done my first hike yet) but the weather is beautiful and I know its a great way to get healthy, but I don't want to go alone. Also it would have to be a pretty easy hike to start.
Motivation doesn't last but neither does bathing, that's why it is recommended daily.

I did an 8 mile run today, and then later went and watched a bit of the bike portion of the Ironman Arizona. The bike course was not too far from my house, so went there to watch and get some pictures. Congrats to all the athletes doing the race today!
given your determination, am sure you're going to make it!

Got in an Olympic distance triathlon spread over the last three days - 1700 m swim, 24 mile bike and 6.2 mile run. Now I just have to put them all together on one day a week from today.
Great - please keep us posted so we can share your achievement!

I did another sprint distance triathlon last weekend (see my blog), and another 1700 yard swim today and decided to go for it - I'm going to do an Olympic distance triathlon on October 28th!

I had planned to do a triathlon this weekend, but I didn't feel ready for the swim. It is an open water 750 m swim, and I have only done a couple of open water swims previously. I decided not to do the triathlon, but I went to the pool at my local YMCA and just started swimming. I wanted to see how much I could do. Now, it is much different swimming in a 25 yd pool instead of a lake or some other open water, but I did 1600 yards with no real difficulty. This has got me thinking I may try for a pool swim Olympic distance triathlon at the end of October. We'll see.

Hello! I finally made the move from WI to AZ and man I can't believe the heat! Right now I think I'll just stick to walking my aunt's dog in the evening but would more people be up for hiking when in cools down in the fall again? I know I'm looking forward to the cooler weather.

Got out for a run this morning despite the fact it is very hot and humid this morning.
Just wanted to make sure everyone on this thread knew about the Saturday, April 14 Arizona SparkRally to be held right here in Scottsdale. It's at Vista del Camino Park, 7700 E Roosevelt right on the greenbelt. We're having a potluck - families, children, and pets on leashes are welcome. So far we have between 80 - 100 people signed up, but the more the merrier! Sparkbuddy AZClaire has been the organizing force and has set up a SparkTeam 'AZ Spark Rally April 14, 2012' with more info. Lots of healthy food, a Zumba class, playground, walking paths, and a chance to get in touch with others on the same path to health and fitness.

I had a great first ride on my new bike today! Beautiful weather for it, too!
So glad you hiked it! There are so many trails in the Preserve - hope you get a chance to do some more. Carol

I just started this site yesterday with the help from my friend. And I did go hike up at Lost Dog trail the last 2 days. Funny how I've lived a mile away and have never even gone there. It was beautiful and rewarding. Thanks!

If you haven't done it before, Lost Dog Trail in the Mountain Preserve is pretty easy with a great overlook view as a reward. Trailhead is off the parking lot just north of 124th St/Cactus. Trail is 4.2 mile round trip with easy elevations. Let us know what you wind up doing! Carol

Now that the weather's cooled off, I'm back to walking outside (don't run because of knees) and usually do at least 3 miles. Go-to exercise is stationary recumbent bike and am now up to 14 miles in a hour.

I'm hoping to get in a 10 mile run this weekend. I'm training for the Fiesta Bowl Half Marathon in December, and then the Disney World Half in January.
I've been doing most of my exercise inside lately - morning walks are getting earlier trying to beat the heat. Your orthotics obviously are doing their job well!

Got in three days on the treadmill desk this week, topping it off with a 13.1 mile walk yesterday in a little over 5 hours while I worked.
I'm on my way out for a 3.25 mile walk in the greenbelt (getting out there earlier and earlier and the temps rise). A very Happy Father's Day to all you guys out there!

I ran the Arizona Road Racers' Summer Series #1 5K race this morning over in Papago Park by the zoo. A little warm, but otherwise a great day for it, and the orthotics seemed to work pretty well.

My ability to hike or run is going to be limited the next while as I have a cast on my foot. I hope all of you are taking advantage of the great weather!
Gorgeous out there this weekend! I didn't go anywhere special, just about 6 miles walking in the greenbelt and going on foot to the farmer's market on Saturday.
I'm going out of town for 5 days this week and then a week next month, both times to be with family who traditionally equate food with love (more food = more love) and become very offended when I don't eat everything offered. I'll get through it the best way I can and hope the weather there (Chicago and then Albany) is nice enough to get out and walk at least some of it off. Carol

Doing the treadmill desk for 2 hours again today. I have a bike ride planned for tomorrow and a sprint triathlon for Sunday, so I hope the weather cooperates!
I plan on doing 3 miles at Chaparral Lake Sunday morning. If anyone else is interested, we meet at the parking lot just north of the lake (access Jackrabbit/Hayden) at 9 a.m.

Looks like we are going to have great weather for the weekend! Will you be getting outside for some exercise?
FYI: Every Sunday morning at 8 a.m. some of us go walking at Chaparral Park and take either the 2 or 3 mile trail (level, sidewalk path around the lake and playing fields). We meet at the inner parking lot off Jackrabbit Road/Hayden and any interested walkers are definitely welcome. Carol

I'm off to Denver for the rest of the week for a conference. I hope I'll be able to find some nice running trails I can use while I'm there. Have a good week!
No, I haven't hiked in ages. Its the hubby's birthday and he wants to go to Flagstaff for the weekend. The hubby said he's wanting to play tennis. The weather report says its going to be windy so we'll see. We will be doing some sort of exercise even if its just walking up and down some of the hills around the observatory.
