Jacki - if you are open to this I think it'd be interesting for you to try not eating the things you love. I'm seeing an allergist, and he says we're MOST likely allergic to the things we eat often (me: bread and dairy daily). I didn't have "overt" gastrointestinal symptoms like most people with celiac, so that my body was telling me something was wrong cause I had eczema, depression and anemia, was quite a surprise - and why the doctors didn't find it for ... well, my life.

Give up what you crave and maybe your body will respond better to the fruits and veggie substitutes. I tell ya, we have to go back to cooking real foods. Now that I don't eat gluten (you can make rice bread, as I don't recommend the rice breads on the market unless they're toasted, and rice pasta - Tinkyada is AWESOME), there is SUCH a difference in how my stomach tells me I'm full. I used to not tell, but I would eat until I'd get bloated full; esp. at someplace like Olive Garden. However, and also interesting, I'd also usually order gluten free without realizing it was gluten free food! (Like the chili and a baked potato at Wendy's or the lettuce wraps at PF Changs!)

If you give up gluten for a week, tell me how you feel. (Gluten is wheat, rye, barley and oats. It's hard at first, but my husband just tried and he feels like this is the missing key of the universe! funny, but I'm telling you, getting the "glue" out, makes you think clearly. I was headed for Alzheimer's ladies, I kid you not. I am still recovering, but I can retrieve words better, and my memory isn't so great anymore. But I'm getting better. And do you know what causes Alzheimer's? A sticky protein -- just like gluten, though named differently. I'm telling you, I'm the proverbial canary in the coal mine. Give up junk food and all the stuff in the middle aisles of the grocery store. Eat organic for more nutrients.

Haven't you ever heard about people who go on fasts and they say how great they feel? It's because they're not eating gluten.

Where can I scream this from the rooftops? I wish I could!

KNOWLEDGE = POWER. BODY = TEMPLE. FOOD = MEDICINE. PREVENTION IS THE CURE. YOU ARE WHAT YOU ABSORB!

Jacki,

I really can relate to you. I've had the same feelings from time to time. When I was diagnosed with diabetes in September, that was my motivation to get healthy. I started out taking baby steps. First, I made sure I was getting my water in every day. That is a major part of this new healthy life style. From that point on, I just added on more thing. I have asthma, which made it very hard to catch my breath from time to time. So I just took the exercise very slowly. I started out just walking a little more at work. I used a printer that was on the opposite side of the building. Also, I used the bathroom on the opposite side of the building. I parked my car further from the building. At first, I had to stop and catch my breath a couple of times before I made it to the office, but now I can walk all the way from the parking lot to my office. It took awhile, but just last week I started to use my Walk Away the Pounds for Abs One Mile video. It's a little difficult, but I'm making it through each day. I did 5 days last week. I'm going to continue the 5 days this week. Besides the exercise and water, I started cutting out junk food, fast food, and sugar. I still get pizza almost every week, but instead of eating a large pizza all by myself, I have one or two pieces and still stay within my calorie range. I'm working on cutting it out completely.

As the days go on, you will start feeling much better. You'll get stronger and stronger. The one thing that has helped me completely was being on Spark People every day without fail. I log all my food and exercise no matter what. I joined several Spark teams, but this one is by far my favorite. I joined the weekly challenges. I've tried to be as supportive as I can to everyone and I've received so much support and inspiration from everyone else.

You can do this!!! We are here to help each other along the way.

Hugs,

Lainie

You are not a bad person! I think that makes it harder sometimes to do healthy and good things for yourself because you don't feel worthy of doing good things for yourself. Just take it one day at a time, or one meal at a time. I definitely feel like I am a compulsive overeater and addicted to food, but I also feel like I can do something about it, not that I don't have bad days, but each day I succeed makes it easier to succeed the next day. You can do this! You are a good person and you do deserve health and vitality and good things in your life!!!

The next time you feel like having a "bad" snack, have some popcorn. There are the 100 calorie packs that come in butter and kettle corn. They are crunchy and you can choose from salty or sweet, whichever you are in the mood for. They are a lifesaver!!!

I definitely think that setting a few small goals for now and working on them would be good for you. Ease yourself into better habits. Make sure you get your water in, and maybe slowly start switching your bad carbs to healthier ones, one week at a time.

I agree - I find that by making small changes, I'm more consistent. If I cut out everything "bad" for me and start intense workouts, I know I'm not going to stick with it. I give myself permission to take the weight loss slow and focus on making better choices that I hope will become good habits in the long run.

Please, don't beat yourself up - you simply deserve to be good to yourself - and you can do it!!! You've come to the right place for support!!!

I wonder if you are just not overwhelmed with it all. It is so hard, I know. But you have to start little and work up. Little steps eventually equal big ones, and big ones equal huge ones, and so on. Start little and make some progress. That will encourage you to do better.
Also you can lean on us and we will help you through the hard parts.

I feel the same way. This was a hard week for me. I found myself eating more this Sunday. I worked out a lot but I still wasn't feeling full. So I pigged out. Don't knock yourself today is another and lets try to do better. Just continue to write down what you are eating.

I also try to get my carbs from vegs and fruits but, I also love bread and white rice and I find myself also getting second portions to whatever I eat. I tought myself how to divide my food on my plate get my 2 portions and divide into half and one portion I put alot of pepper so when I'm done with my smaller portion if I want more I know I wont eat the portion with the pepper. I also tend to drink alot of water while eating. I've read take your time eating because by the time you done eating you will be tried. You just need that little motivate to get you away from going for seconds. Get in your carbs from fruits and vegs that's a start. Start walking around the house is also a start to help you get in a little exercise. Good luck.

take everyday a few minutes at a time...say to yourself "for the next hour, i won't eat any carbs" once you have a few small goals accomplished, then the larger ones don't seem to be so big. you're not a bad person...please don't let that thought enter your mind!
i get out of breath too when i walk, and i have to push myself sooooo hard just to do one mile, i also can only do 2 minutes on the elliptical machine, and that totally wipes me out, but the point is you are doing it, your out there walking, and you should be proud to be out of breath b/c you've been exorcising...your taken your body to the max! work it girl! and be proud!
as for the 2nd portions, i have a little trick for that too. i slice my meats up real thin, so it looks like a ton of food when i put 4 oz on my plate...and i put one bite in my mouth, chew it, swallow it, take a sip of water, before i even get another bite ready on my fork. before, i was shoveling food in my mouth, barley chewing, and i had another fork full waiting on the fork before i had even swallowed. if you do it the other way, it gives your mind time to register that you're actually full.
i hope this helps a little

I notice my best days is when I get plenty of protien. I have issues with carbs too..it seems everyone in the 100 club does so maybe there is something to the carbs/numbers thing on here.

I have started having things for breakfast that you wouldn't think of.. like, turkey burgers on dark rye. I have even added a teaspoon on A 1 sauce to it while cooking (or even after) and it's yummy.

Ok first off, you are /not/ a bad person! If you are then all of us are with you, all of us are heavy! So please don't do that to yourself.. no more negative self talk, its really a killer.

Second, take it one day at a time. Instead of saying you'll do good forever, or do good for a week, just say you'll do good today, or even just do good for this meal, that meal.. however small a goal you need to set. Willpower is a bit easier if the big picture is not so overwhelming!

Make little changes, just little things like making sure you eat fruit and veggies every day, maybe more than once a day. And get your water! If thats crystal lite, lemon water, sparkling water.. whatever is best for you.. drink drink drink.

Start with those little changes and you'll start to feel better about this process. Come on, you can do it!!!

Melissa - SD

Small changes will lead to big results!

Everybody so far has said what I wanted to say. Eat what are known as "good carbs," fruits, veggies, whole grains. Yes, it's very hard to give up and eat correctly, but you have to make the decision to do this for your health. My rule with carbs is I try to avoid the white stuff, white sugar, white flour. It's hard and you can expect to have a headache the first couple of days, but you'll be amazed at how much better you feel after two or three days. The more you cut the bad carbs out, the less hungry you will be. The more you eat them, the more you want them. Hope this helps.

Fact is that if I eat sucker or bad carbs i get gravings to eat more of them. I'am convinced they are addictive to me (and bad because of allergie). Avoiding them releases me of the gravings.

Like dotslady i get my carbs only from veggies and fruit (and once a week from rice). I also drink 16 oz of soyamilk a day so that gives me some carbs as well. The rest of my callories comes from protein. I feel great if i do that. I just need to drink more water because of my hihg protein intake. For me thats no problem.

i used to be a carbo and dairy junkie til I found out i had celiac disease. i had my daughter tested and she does not have it (if she'd have kept eating carbos for 25 or so years, she may well have gotten it like her mama here!)

i am eating gluten-free now cause I don't want to get a GI cancer or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. I know you don't have the disease (actually, I don't know that -- maybe you should look into it - start by reading www.jccglutenfree.googlepages.com), but think about saving yourself by eating nothing but fruits and veggies for a while (and brown rice - it's non-allergenic) and protein!

I found that the more fruits, veggies and protein I ate, the more I felt BETTER and nourished. I don't crave as much anymore. Only once in a while do I want something salty or sweet. Only once in a while (once a week, whereas it used to be daily).

You can do it!!! Let me know how it goes!

Best to you.
