Good ideas!
I don't know, though, if the popcorn bags add a lot of sodium. They may not taste salty but I know most packaged foods have tons of sodium for preserving and flavour. I'll have to check the bags.

I wonder if we have Molly McButter in Winnipeg. I don't think I've ever seen it, but I might not have looked in the right place. Is it kept with spices? Or popcorn?

I think I figured out the secret to not snacking on bad stuff int he afternoon!

Wait for it.
Wait for it.
*drum roll*

Not having any junk in the house! All I have is fresh fruit and veggies and fat free yoghurt! Sure makes for healthier snacks! Problem is, I don't have any eggs or bread either, so I DO need to go shopping and everyone else wants some 'snack-y' foods. {sigh} It was great while it lasted!

If you really want popcorn with butter, you could pop popcorn at home and place in a plastic bag or lidded container. You can spray it with I can't believe its not butter while hot or sprinkle on some molly mcbutter. You could also do one of those "plain" popcorn microwave bags and do the same thing.

I have also started eating more fruit and veggies as an afternoon snack. The greatest ones... don't laugh. I go to our local farmers market and see what they have that's new, that I haven't ever had before.

This summer so far, I have tried mini red plums, yellow plums...both incredibly sweet and juicy. I have also tried yellow zucchini. It's sweeter than green zucchini.

It's a great way to keep to lo-cal, fresh, good and fun all at the same time.

Afternoon is my downfall as well! The last week I've been doing much better. I've been snacking on fruit a lot, and also popcorn (air-popped with specially-measured margarine).

The suggestions given below are great! Protein, fibre, and some fats are great ways to make you feel fuller, longer, and help to get you to your next meal.

Way to go, by the way, for avoiding the chocolate and staying strong! Good for you!

I normally keep some fruit snacks (like the kind you get for your kids) at my desk. I get the kid that is only 80 calories. I also keep a bag of 100 calorie pop-corn.

two ideas for those days when you want a little chocolate: 1) Swiss Miss Cocoa - Marshmallow Lovers (fat free) has 70 calories and if you make it with skim milk, it will be more filling 2) Emerald Nuts makes cocoa covered almonds that have a dark chocolate taste

Yogurt or fruit can make a nice afternoon snack. I also like carrots with a Polly-O cheese stick (the "made w/ 2% milk" kind).

Maybe popping a bag of light microwave popcorn would work on those days when you really want popcorn.

baby carrots are great...also celery...and if you need calcium, cheese...apples...

Also I feel that having a salad with cucumbers and tomatoes are fulfilling...if you need dressing...a tablespoon of dijon mustard and tablespoon of olive oil.

I have either a small handfull of almonds = 24 almonds = 164 calories, 6 carbs, 14 fat, 6 protein

or 1 hard boiled egg = 78 calories, 1 carb, 5 fat, 6 protein

Protein stays with you much longer than anything else and it also helps to build lean body muscle

Thanks guys!! Those are all really great snacks I could try. I try not to snack at all - so I needed healthy reminder when my mind is set on chocolate and popcorn. Which, by the way, a gal in the office today had chocolate and was passing it out. I said NO THANKS, then the left overs were set out for everyone and I totally avoided it. Yeah me! Truly a huge thing for me.

I watch my fat intake like crazy... my favorite snacks would otherwise include cheese and peanut butter. However, they both are extremely high in fat. @ tablespoons of peanut butter has 17grams of fat. I'm allowed 15 grams per meal. So I sick with fruit or vegies. Or a yummy Fiber one bar!

I'd suggest:

Celery sticks with laughing cow light (only 35 cals per wedge!)

Baby carrots with 1 tbsp organic peanut butter (about 150 cals)

An apple with cheese or 1 tbsp peanut butter (about 200 cals)

A couple slices of turkey lunchmeat with laughing cow light spread on it (about 100 cals)

1/2 cup of cottage cheese (100 cals)

1 cup of nonfat vanilla yogurt with 1/2 cup fiber one cereal mixed in and topped with cinnamon (around 200 cals and TONS of fiber!)

Hope this helps!

My biggest obstacle lately is the afternoon. I want so badly to go over to the popcorn stand and get a large bag with extra butter! Any good suggestions for a low cal, yet filling, healthy afternoon snack to get me through?
