Yes getting a regular diet really helps with my moods as well. We are sick now in my house as well...ugh! And I ams till in a pretty good mood. Had a bad hour last night with both kids screaming but after I was ok!

I will be getting my hubby to ake more half way point pics tonight and I will post them right away!

Hi Tauniar, I really notice on the irritability - lately I am actually a happy person - even with being sick. Well, I was happy b4, too, but just always on edge. I had a bit of that feeling today, but it was from lack of sleep, not lack of food. That is a good thing.

Well, I discovered that I had a sinus infection that got so bad it blocked my ears - and I have uneven fluid build-up, causing severe dizzy spells. Doc said it was a good thing babies were in daycare - because I was in no shape to look after them. Today the fluid has started to drain and I feel a bit better. I guess this explains the migrains last week - they were sinus headaches. Doc wants me to take a full week off work, but I think that I will head back in as soon as I can.

Well, I increased my calories - and I felt better, but then I got hit with PMS big time - I had a migraine every day for 7 days, and then gained 5 lbs. I am trying to stay in good humor about it. TOM is gone now, and I am already down 1lb.

In other news... I finally caught what the babies had, and am home sick from work today. I am feeling a little guilty, because I still took them in to daycare. Ds1, who is 3.5 is in preschool, needs to be there for 9:00 every morning - so I don't feel to bad about that - but the twins.... Well, I might pick them all up early if I am feeling better.

I am going to try getting in to see the dr. Thing is, I am having pretty severe dizzy spells and can't drive. Maybe I will go over to the walk-in by us. I can just see me - stopping every 5 min to rest on the walk over. Pathetic. I want to be peppy!!! Really, I do, I do, I do!!!

I have honestly never had a problem with my supply and there were days when I was getting in as little as 800 calories..The problems that I were having were far more related to my own health. (motivation, cofidence, energy, dizziness) For me, as long as I drink enough water I never have supply problems, and I drink at least 17 glasses a day, and ALWAYS feel thursty...GUZZLE, GUZZLE, GUZZLE!

Michelle - I totally agree with Sam. You have no reason to worry...Like I said if and when my period ever returns...I WILL NOT be weighing myself at all during that time, and probably not for a week after. It really does a number on your water retention! and the fact that you didn't gain really does say something! : )

The only time I really noticed a problem with supply was when I was SUPER stressed out in the beginning. My milk came in right away (I pumped 3 bottles pretty much right after the surgery) and then 1.5 days later, when I was fighting with my mom, both babies were in the intensive care and were transfered to another hospital without me and I had to refuse care for major surgery in order to see them, I completely dried up. It was a day of pumping every hour before it returned.

Lately, my supply is also down, but that has more to do with the fact that I am back at work, they are a year old, and only feed morning and night. I am actually thinking of pumping, because we wound up with issues of dehydration because they wouldn't drink at work. So I guess my breasts are going to explode again. My issue has usually been more of oversupply than undersupply. When I was pumping regularly, after each feed, I would still have 8-10 oz of milk in each breast. That is why I have to drink like a fish. At my most I would go through about 10-15 litres of water in a day, and wake up parched with a dehydration headache in the morning.

My supply lowers when I am eating too little for a few days in a row...when is was doing the 1200-1550 I noticed after 2 weeks my supply was down...this was also the time my daughter was going through a growing spurt so it was a tough week! But it's all great now! I make sure to drink my water and eat my mim and it's all good!

I've found that my supply doesn't really hinge on how much I eat but on how much I drink. If I get below about 6 glasses of water a day, my supply cuts down drastically. With calories, however, I can eat as little 600-800 calories/day, and it doesn't matter at all.

Babyfit told me (based on my height and weight) that I should consume 2200-2600 (may have been 2400, not sure, it was a very high number thats all I remember) calories a day. This seemed way too high to me!! I usually average around 1800. I had to fib and say I was not BFing to join SP, and it says I should consume 1200-1500 a day. I have been averaging right around 1500-1600 I do not feel bad when I go a tad over because its no where near what Babyfit was telling me to eat. I have no problem with my milk supply and my baby is at a very healthy weight.

I was thinking yesterday to myself - most people gain a lot of water weight when TOM comes a knocking. You stayed the same, Michelle. That really does count for something. In fact, because it is normal to gain water weight (which promptly sheds itself after) you likely lost fat.

Just something for you to think about next time you feel discouraged about it.

I thought I was the only one!!! Congratulations to both of you on your losses!!! I heard a lack of zinc can make the TOM extra difficult. I started tracking mine, and I am consistently under. I started taking a supplement, and now the chocolate tastes even better - it improves the tastebuds. It is supposed to help with cramping and bad mood. There goes my excuse.

haha! I was wondering why I was B*tchy and hungry and wanting choclate like it was goin gout of style....well my friend ( who calls it that anyway...not a very nice friend!) left this morning...so I'm hoping tomorrow will be a better day! Thanks for noticing...It feels SO good when someone notices the weight loss. I am now getting in 1500 calories a day on average. and once I upped the calories the weight really started to come off. Not to worry though...the scale didn't show your weight loss because you had your period! Next week it will show even more weight loss.

I am still waiting for my TOM to return. I am hoping soon...My hubby has been telling me that I am being B!chy, and that it has to be just around the corner...I am convinced that it isn't and that I am just being b!chy cause he is an @$$! : ) KIDDING! : )

Wow...I haven't been counting calories or anything because I read somewhere that breastfeeding women should just eat when they're hungry and concentrate on eating a balanced diet. I've been working out like a fiend, but I still weigh the same as I have for months, so I think I'm going to start keeping track of what I eat and try to keep it in the 1500-1800 calorie range, after reading the experiences you all have been having. My baby is 7mos old and my supply is great, so I think it should be safe to do this as long as I keep packing in the healthy food. Wish me luck!

Yeah, all that was happening was me getting more and more irritable and bloated. Yesterday, I ate 1772 calories, and today my clothes fit. Weird. For the first 6 months of breastfeeding, I actually made sure to eat about 2800 (I had twins) calories and did a lot of walking and I still lost weight pretty quickly. Now I just want to tone, and get a nice highny, and it was so frustrating because I just kept getting bloated. Hopefully this will solve all that.

I am pretty short - I come in at only 5' (and a little bit on a good day - go yoga) so I thought that less was more, but I just checked how many calories I would need to eat to maintain my weight burning 4500 a week (500/day(breastfeeding twins) + 1000 per week for the cardio I burn) and it said that I could eat as much as 2300 without gaining. So I figure 1600-1800 should be about right. I never thought of upping my calories. I should have, though, based on the fact that I am just plain irritable whenever I behave for a week.

I had a really hard time upping my calories at first. I was afraid that if I ate more that I would stop losing but I have actually found that I am losing more weight because my body is not in starvation mode. I would definatly recommend that you up your calories at least a little bit...I think most of the ladies here are eating 1800 - 2000. (I usually come in just over 1500 but I make sure that I don't go below that.) But especially if you are having a hard time keeping your enenrgy up or having binging sessions...I think if you up your calories it would definatly help. I started by adding a "100 calorie pack"

Maybe I should up my calorie intake - I keep binging, and some of that may be from my body telling me I need more...

I have been averaging about 1400 a day, and then I usually blow it once a week or thereabouts.

hey 18 ponuds is great too! Thank you for your kind remarks! It's nice when people notice...very encouraging. I still have to ride my bike for the day. My usual 20 minutes....i try not to go to bed until all the spots are check in spark points for the day...at least 1 in every avail box for the day!haha....call me neurotic or something...obsessive! lol! whatever works!

congrats on the weight loss so far! I hate to exercise and have been working very hard at motivating myself to work out every day. I have a stationary bike and I wathc tv while i ride away...makes the time go by so fast that I hardly notice what Im doing...and the weight just keeps coming off! Yippeeeee!

So I am averaging 1500 calories a day now and my weight has been coming off pretty regularly.

YOu know it is funny about the exercise...A friend of mine was telling me how all the baby weight came off for her just from breast feeding. So when Garak was younger I thought that I didn't have to do anything and the weight would come off as long as I was breastfeeding...I was so wrong...Well now that he is 6 months old I have finally dedicated myself to a workout routine and the weight is finally coming off...Just goes to show that everyone is different! : ) I see that you are doing well now!

yes it's touhg when the scale doesn't budge...a few weeks ago I had that problem and all I did was add more exercise...ok exercise period! That week I did not exercise 1 time! Bad me! But the scale showed me how important exercise is to weight loss! One of my biggest problems right now is getting enough water everyday!

Well for the first time since I joined SP, on my weigh day the scale just wouldn't budge. I have decided to add another "Nabisco 100 calorie snack" that should get my calories up a bit more. It is funny that I am trying to up my calories after not losing. My natural reaction is to want to eat less, but I know that I need to up it...so I am, hopefully I won't have a gaining week after this but we will just have to see!

Well, after upping my calories, I immediately gained a pound, but my metabolism seems to have stabilized and I'm right back to where I was, so I'm extremely hopeful that this will be beneficial. And it means I get to have my (cheese)cake and eat it too! :D

Yeah, I think I'm definitely going to start having to up my calories. Maybe more fruits--have an apple a day, some grapes, and then see where I can go from there.

An update on increasing my calories. I changed my range from 1200-1550 to 1400-1800. The first day I felt so hungry, like all of a sudden I could EAT and everything tasted so good! I accidentally went over a bit (1812). The next day I was more in control and stopped at 1771. So two days of experimenting with a higher calorie range and I feel better, am less hungry at the end of the day, and the scale shows ... I was scared to look ... I lost 2 pounds! So I think in my case, my plateau was my body saying "you are not giving me enough to run on!"


So, if you're thinking you may need more calories, I say give it a try for a few days to a week and see what happens.

I am sure that it is very frustrating when you hit a plateau, especially when you are doing everything that you can think of to do to keep those lbs comming off. I am totally with you on the fear to increase the caloric intake too. i have been increasing one snack per week to try to get my calorie range up. I am finding that if I eat healthy snacks, my numbers still aren't coming up enough and I have found that I kind of have to plug in an unhealthy snack somewhere in there. I myself love hot tamalies so I give myself a couple of servings of that to get my calories up a bit. What do you LOVE? Add that...You deserve a treat anyway!

yes that can be frustrating....but your body is probably in starvation mode and saving all the food you eat because it doesn't know when you will feed it again! Trust me...I'm getting about 1500-1700 cal per day and it's stll coming off...several pounds a week as long as I am exercising! I know it feels wrong to eat that much but a regular body needs 1200 per day just to breathe and think! Our bodys are working way harder....so we need more! Take advantage...have a chocolate bar or soemthing! Take advantage while you can to have a treat everyday! Once you are done breastfeeding you won't have the luxury!

I've hit a plateau. I'm still not regularly hitting even the minimum of what SP recommends, yet my weight loss has stopped. And I've started exercising to boot. I think I'm gonna go through this weekend, see what happens, and if I still don't see results, I'll start upping my calories some.

I am averaging around 1300 calories now, and I feel like I am eating all day, but the weight is still coming off. I know that is still not as many calories as I should be eating and I am still trying to increase. I need to add a bit of unhealthy food I think to get my cals up.

I've decided to try increasing my calories too. I lost weight *very* quickly in the first 3 weeks, but then in the next week my weight went up one pound and has stayed there for the past 8 days. I'm going to try 1600-1800 for the next week and see what happens.

Since finding Breastfeeding moms and reading about increasing your calories above what your recommended rate was, I started eating around 1700-1800 calories.
Wow, I weighed in this morning and I'm down 4 more pounds. Good to know you can eat a little more and still lose!!

Well the extra snack has helped and I am now consistantly getting in at least 1300 calories. (I know that is still probably not quite enough but it is an improvement!) At the end of the week I will try to add in another snack!

Yes the article I cited said approx. 2 lbs loss per week was what you should be aiming for...which is right in there with the 1.5 you said...which is pretty much what Sparks has said...but much more important when you are breastfeeding. I found this out sereval weeks ago which is why I originally posted about it! Glad my info helped and thank for the extra information!!! emoticon

Hi ladies. The post about toxins got me searching and I found out something interesting. Apparently you have to lose slowly enough so that the toxins don't overwhelm your system. However they consider 1.5 pounds per week slow. I thought slow was more like .5 pound. Guess that means I can kick up my workouts since I know my 1500 calories is working.

My biggest weakness is HOt Tamalies. I actually had 6 servings of them this weekend. (stayed within my caloire range) but I did finally make it to the upper end of my calorie range...around 1400!

I find that it's much harder to even reach 1000 calories a day now that I'm on my second child--I never seem to have time to eat! My SP range is 1400-1600, so I know I'm never getting enough. Though, of course, Chinese helps. *laughs* But it doesn't seem to be affecting my supply any, so I'm not worried!

For a treat, I actually really love pineapple chunks or slices. :D

I had no idea about the toxins. Thanks for that info! I was able to actually get up to 1700 yesterday...PIZZA does the trick it seems. It just seems for me at least that it is hard to get that high on my calories if I eat only healthy foods all day...If I have to squeeze in a slice of pizza now and then so be it!

I have increased my calorie intake to about 1500-1700 per day....but I understand what you are saying...Im so afraid it will slow my weight loss haveing it this high! But I am also trying to remember I don't want to take the chance of anything being wrong with my milk...I am the only source of food my daughter has....it's not all about me...she relies on me to have good healthy milk. When you loose weight too fast when you are breastfeeding , all the toxins that are stored in your fat glands are excreted into your bloodstream which in turns ends up in your milk....so it pays to go slowly and limit your child risks!

Well I tried to do my part and I actually ate two extra servings of Hot Tamalies (my favorite candy) thinking I would bring my caloire count up, but when I sat down and entered in my food for the day ... Including all of my snacks (I have at least 5 fruits and veggies for snacks) I actually came in at under 1100 for the day...I guess I really should up it some more. I am thinking about trying some kind of shake or energy bar but I feel like they are so many calories!?!? I guess we gotta do what we gotta do! I will try it with you!

I'm eating 1500 - 1800 as well. And losing weight - last week I lost 1 1/2 pounds, and I was consistently at or slightly above (Ike!) 1800. I thought for sure i was eating too much to lose. But, no way. My son is almost 2, so when he nurses, I'm sure he's sucking down quite a bit! emoticon

I'm with you... I have had a hard time adding the extra 300 - 500 calories a day anyway, but I am also afraid of adding just a little bit to every meal to add them... because then I will get used to it, and when I stop nursing, it will be that much harder to go back to the 1200 a day. So adding one or two small snacks, but keeping everything else the same seems to make sense, then instead of having to change my whole diet to go back when I'm done nursing, I will only have to drop the snack! I was thinking of adding a shake, either a slim fast, or a boost... something that will add the calories easily, without having to eat a lot more and feel nauseaus, and still be good nutrition. I may try to buy some ready made cans and try it for a week or two and see if that will help!!

We can do it!! It's sooo nice to have someone else to do this all with!!

I am glad to hear that there is someone else out there that is having the same mental delemma that I seem to be having. I know that I am suposed to eat more calories than I am eating but somewhere in my brain I keep thinking that if I increase my caloire intake I will blow up like a balloon. I seem to think that if I am eating when I am not hungry it will just make my weight loss slow.

So I totally understand how you feel and where you are coming from. It would be especially hard if I had leveled out and stopped losing. I have heard from many of the ladies that they DON'T lose weight if they don't eat enough calories. But somehow those facts won't convince the part of my brain that tells me that I am gonna explode if I eat any more...UGGGGGGGGGGGggg...Perhaps together we can try to increase our calorie intake. Lets both eat one extra snack per day this week and see how we do?!?! What do you say?

I totally understand your dilemma, Taunia!! I have found that when I just eat normally, I usually fall at about 1200 calories per day, which is right at the bottom of my recommended sparkpeople range - but still low for trying to breastfeed. It is really getting me down that I am stuck at this weight. After my youngest was born almost 7 months ago, I weighed 190, and I lost the baby weight in the first 6 weeks ( I had only gained 20 with this baby) and another 12 pounds in the following 3 months. I wasn't doing anything really special, I was just eating healthier choices and starting to walk a few times a week. But it's been two months, and I have only lost about 3 pounds, and they keep coming back, then losing them, they coming back.... I can't seem to get past this point, and it's killing me!!!

I know everyone has said to increase my calories, so I guess I am going to keep trying... I did good for two days, but then went back to normal eating and back to about 1100 or 1200 a day again. I also think I need to add some strength training into my routine... I get about 5 hours of cardio a week (3 light and 2 heavy cardio hours), which is also stressing me out, I feel like I am eating healthy options all the time, working out all the time, and still not losing?? I feel like there is something wrong with me.

So wish me luck... I really hope that adding an extra 500 calories a day isn't going to make me balloon back up!!!

Well I think it can have a negative affect just from everything that Spark People keep telling us. In all the articles I've read so far, they state that it's necessary to eat at least 1200 or you body goes into the state of storing everything because it fears that it won't get any more food to work off of. Your body needs the 1200 just to keep the normal body processes working correctly. Breathing, digesting, ect. I don't know what else to say ......but maybe you might ask one of their experts that are online, maybe they can give you some better tools for that! Don't know if I helped! haha

Ok so I know that I am suposed to be increasing my calorie intake, but for the last couple of days I have actually come in below again (around 1100) I know it isn't enough but I somehow have this irrational fear that if I eat more food or if I eat enough to get me in the "proper" calorie window I will gain weight. It is funny because I know that I am suposed to eat more, but I just can't seem to bring myself to do it. Do you guys really think it is bad to take in so few calories? I eat a lot of fruit and veggies throughout the day, and I don't feel hungry?!?! I haven't had any problems with my milk production so far, but do you really think that I will?

Thanks Wendy! I am definatly going to eat a bit more fruits and veggies...I have already upped my calorie intake quite a bit...If you remember I was comming in under 1200 quite often and now I make sure that I am at least at 1300! :)

I would maybe just do a test run. I have been in that calorie range 1500-1800 and I've been consistenly losing 1-1/2 pounds a week (the recommended). I think that if you make healthy choices for the increase in calories you'll be just fine. Like you said Taunia, just increased your vegetable and fruits might help you get there.... Just a thought!

I recently joined this group and this has been a topic of conversation on one of my other groups. From all of the information that I have read, I should be intaking much more calorie wise than I currently am. I average around 1300 calories a day, but I don't feel hungry. (and my supply is ABSOLUTELY FINE) I have been losing 2 lbs per week and all of that seems fine. My question is...Should I increase my caloire intake anyway? (I am afraid that I won't lose weight if I do, but I have heard that increasing for some that are breastfeeding has actually increased their weight loss as well!)

I am so glad to get this info! I was consistantly between 1100 and 1300 calories per day when I first started tracking (even before finding spark). I knew it was low, but I wasn't having problems with my milk supply, so I thought it would be fine. And I lost for the first few weeks, but I have been stuck for about 2 months now!! I couldn't understand it, until I saw something on this board that prompted me to look into it. I found a ton of info saying that if you eat too few calories, your body goes into starvation mode, especially if you are nursing, and stores every calorie as fat!! So I have upped my caloric intake to between 1700 and 2000 a day... feels like soooo much right now, but my recommended amount on this site is between 1200 and 1550, and the information I got said to add 500 calories to any diet program to keep your supply in tact and your metabolism running.

Does this sound right to anyone else? I have only been adding these calories for the past few days, but I am feeling bloated, and afraid that this many calories is going to ruin the small amount of progress I've been able to make so far!! I want to make sure my supply stays good, especially now that my baby is almost 7 months old, and loving sitting at the table for "real" meals with the family (already looking up to big brother and sister), and seems to lose interest in nursing quicker and quicker... but I don't want to stop losing!!

Begin your weight loss program slowly when you are breastfeeding. Increase your activity level and eat less fat and sugar and more fruits and vegetables. Try to take in at least 1,800 calories each day, and definitely no less than 1,500 calories. Even moderate dieting during lactation can help you lose 4-5 pounds each month, but don't expect to lose body fat until about 2 weeks postpartum. The weight you lose immediately after birth is usually fluid loss. Mothers who breastfeed more frequently lose weight faster than mothers who nurse less often, and mothers who nurse for shorter periods of time tend to lose weight more slowly than mothers who nurse longer. You may get lucky and find that you can eat more than you ever could before and still lose weight while nursing. That was the case with me, but I did find that eating a whole container of Ben and Jerry's before bedtime every night kept me from losing weight as quickly as I would have liked.

oh good. i was wondering if i was consuming enough for breastfeeding. I try to stay at or under 1800 per day. This was quite an adjustment at first as i really pigged out with this last pregnancy but i'm getting used to it now. emoticon

So good to know! i kept feeling like I was over doing it! But the other ladies I've been on line with are not breastfeeding so they stay within the 1200-1550....and I am more 1700-1900. So good to not be alone! Do you know what the recomendation caloric intake is for breastfeeding?

I eat around 1700 to 1900 (sometimes 2000). I've lost consistently and kept up a good supply.

How many calories per day are you eating? My goal is between 1500-1800. Anything less than that and i'm afraid I'll loose my supply.
