Also reading The Bible this year. Got a version I can understand and a chronological reading plan. What a story that is!

Ok, so last night I read Allison Hewitt Is Trapped by Madeleine Roux

Thank you Goodreads fro recommending this book to me!!!!! I was browsing through the "recommended from your reading" books and this one happened to pop up. Honestly I almost bypassed it but I have to admit the cover art made me chuckle.... and they say you can't judge a book by its cover!

This was a very very creative spin on the zombie genre. Heck I feel it is one of the better books I have read in a while. It is written as a blog. And it includes blog responses from other survivors out there, so not only do we get a connection with the wonderful characters in this book, but with these virtual strangers....very much like it is in today's world with our online friends who we only know through comments on message boards.

Like I said, the characters are wonderfully written, many times in these types of books, the characters are less important than the schtick, but here you really get such a good feel for them. And it also speaks to how in a situation like this that friendships are created quickly. The story only spans a few months, and, because it is done in a blog format, we aren't really board to tears with the more mundane aspects.

Also, it is interesting that in this story it doesn't focus on the zombies, it is (like The Walking Dead) about the survivors.

There is violence in the book and some gore, but not as bad as some horror books. If you are a fan of Jesse Peterson's series you will enjoy this.

Also.... zombie squirrel FTW!!!!!!!!

Lucy- read Fright Court first, because the novella Capitol Magic has both Jane and Sarah (from Fright Court) as the main characters.

Reading "Don't Mess With Texas" by Christie Craig. I had the great pleasure of taking two workshops with Christie at the Missouri Writers Guild Conference in April. She is just a funny, supportive, positive person. Just before the conference started, a series of 3 of her books hit the NY Times Best Sellers list, so I had to pick up one of her books to check out what it is about her writing that makes her successful. She writes naughty little romances that contain a healthy dose of humor.

The book will soon be re-released under a new title. It seems that the folks from the State of Texas didn't care for her book bearing a title that matched their anti-litter campaign slogan. Geesh. Like there's any connection between a "don't litter" message and a romance novel.

Colleen, next time I get over to Goodreads I'll send a request. I don't get there as often as I would like because it's blocked at work. (That's "social," but Facebook isn't? Go figure.)

I'm currently reading a manuscript for concept, content and copy edit. It's nowhere near read for publishing, so I'll refrain from providing the title and author.

I have a couple of freebie books on my Kindle that I haven't had time to look at yet - one of which is "The Walking Man." If you search it on Amazon today, the Kindle edition is free - even if you aren't a Prime member.

I just finished reading an excellent ebook "The Ghosts of Varner Creek" by Michael Weems. It's 99 cents on Amazon, free to Prime members - and sometimes the author runs a freebie special for all. Warning: It addresses some very dark issues. That said, it is the best book I've read since "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman (a few weeks ago).

I'm currently reading "Circle of Players" by Ann Carpenter. The author sent me a copy for critical review. I'm about halfway through and although had I read it in manuscript form, I would have made some editorial suggestions to improve the writing, it is quite a compelling story. The book is based on a true story and from conversations with Ann, I believe it is her story.

I'm also readiing the March PBMOC selection. It has worked out quite nicely for me that it's a collection of short stories since I can read one or two and put it down while I do the reading for review blogs.

Are any of you gals on GoodReads? I love the site. It's a very convenient way for me to keep track of what I want to read, what I have read, and a great source for book recommendations from other site members. I'm meeting some very interesting people there - many authors who interact directly with readers.

Now that so many books are going digital, and with bookstores closing, I think more and more people are going the self publishing route. It used to be that the publisher was what made your book sell, not always the author's abilities. This is why some authors feels that "real authors" get a publishing house. However in this day and age that thinking will get you stuck. I self publish my stuff. The books my husband has collaborated on are also self published. I love working with Lulu and with Amazon. And since I do the conversion myself that means that, in your scenario, where Amazon gets the 30 cents, I get the 70 for myself LOL :-)

Unless her contract with the publisher is more exclusive than "first right for refusal" Swendson should shop other publishers. Since she already has a following, I would bet somebody would pick it up. If she doesn't get any bites, then hell-yeah self-publish. Provided that the book has been professionally edited so that it won't damage her reputaton as a writer, why not? She sort of owes it to her readers to finish out the series.

There are pros and cons about self-pubilishing. The entire publishing industry is chaotic and highly competitive right now. Quite honestly, there's a lot of self-published crap out there - poorly written and badly edited. But, there are also some really great self-published books on the market, too. There are some traditionally published writers who think self-publishing would stigmatize their work. Maybe that's what's holding Swendson back?

I got an email last night from a publisher who wants to see my full manuscript for "Normal Is So Overrated." I'm in the process of checking his credentials and reputation before I comply with his request. It sounds like it could be an interesting deal. No advance, but he would split the royalties with me 50/50. What that means in real life is that if the book sold on Amazon for $1, Amazon would keep 30 cents, the publisher would get 35 cents and I would get 35 cents. (I used $1 just to make the math easy.) He would do all the set-up, conversion and cover art at no charge to me. I'm trying not to get too excited until I know if he's on the up-and-up. When I emailed him initially, it was really just a feeler, not a pitch letter. It's unusual for a publisher to ask to see the entire manuscript on a non-fiction book without having seen a full proposal that includes synopsis, table of contents, and marketing plan. This guy wants to see the book based on a 1-paragraph description of the book's concept and a blurb about my online presence and media contacts. Something doesn't feel right, so I'm being cautious.

Just finished the Fred the Mermaid book.... not sure if I liked it or not. I have the other 2 on my fire as well so I will read them eventually. I also read I Am American and So Can You! which was cute. I love Stephen Colbert. I just started Dead Bolt which is the second in the Haunted Home Renovation series by Juliette Blackwell.

Oh, and also, Casey started a new book review show podcast called Dad and His Weird Friends. Tonight he is interviewing Jesse Petterson who wrote Flip that Zombie and Shambling With the Stars and all that. This is his first big interview. I will send the link when he has the show up for download. I am pretty excited because I told him to grill her on when she is going to get the next in the series out. Her publishing contract is up and they didn't renew her so I hope she chooses to self publish because I love that series. (But then Shanda Swanson, loved her work too but she has no plans to finish her series out which totally sucks!)

The Vampire Next Door by Ashlyn Chase - It's the third in the Strange neighbors series. Strange neighbors was okay, but the heroine was annoying! The Werewolf Upstairs was much better, I'm only 20% done with this one, but it's waaay better than the other 2!

I'm reading "RSVP: Invitation to an Alchuklesh Massacre" by Jay Squires. He is a fellow writer who sent me a gift ebook copy of the book and asked me to post a review online if I like it. I'll be posting that review. LOL Seriously, it's been pretty good so far. I'm about 85% done with it.

BTW, "Tribal Fires" turned out to be decent. Not a masterpiece, but decent. It's worth reading if you're looking for entertainment.

I finished "Stephen King: On Writing." LOVED that book!

Now I've started reading a book I won for commenting on a blog. "Tribal Fires" by Judy Moresi, who is a local writer (St. Charles, MO). I'm not very far into it, but I have to admit that while reading the first chapter, I kept thinking, "I can do better than this." It's improving as I go along, but if I don't get anything else out of this read, I've already received a writing enthusiasm boost! LOL We'll see how the story goes. Sometimes one that starts out rather so-so ends up being a good book.

I have "Anansi Boys" on my TBR list, too, Colleen. My son got me the dual volume book (and the King book) for the holidays. I'm jonesing to get started on Anansi Boys, but I'm going to finish the one I'm reading and read the PBMOC selection before I jump into it. It's going to be a pretty long read.

I also added King's "11/22/63" and "Under the Dome" to my TBR list. I haven't read any of his books for quite a while. I read so much of his work years ago that I got a little burned out on it. I think those two titles sound really interesting, though.

I have American Gods and Anansi Boys on my to read list.

Over the past couple of weeks I have read:

Flip that Haunted House by Rose Pressey. First in a series, I thought it was cute. Light and fluffy mystery about a woman who can see spirits. Basic romantic notes and what not.

Heat Wave by Richard Castle - What can I say, a book written by a fictional character. I love the tv show and the characters on the tv show, however it doesn't translate well in the book I didn't feel. I love a good mystery but this didn't captivate me.

The Kitchen Witch by Annette Blair - Ok, if you remember I put this book down last time I tried to read it. Now that I have read a few of Blair's other series I found I actually enjoyed this book a little better. I have the other books in this series on my Kindle to read.

No Shoes, No Shirt, No Spells by Rose Pressey another series by the Flip that Haunted House author. Loved this book. A young woman moves back to her small home town to take over her grandmother's cafe and finds out that most of the inhabitants of the town are magical and now she is expected to continue the family tradition. However she messes up a spell and serves a magickal burger to the wrong person and all insanity ensues. The magic police come to investigate and the man of her dreams she may have accidentally bewitched so that his ex and all other women in a 10 mile radius fall in love with him. The story was a hoot and the characters were really brought to life.

Curiosity Thrilled the cat, which is the PBotMC book so I am not talking about this one yet!

Allegra Fairweather Mystery #1 by Janni Nell which is about a paranormal investigator who is helping figure out the mystery of a deadly rose in Scotland. There are ghosts, banshees, a carion and selkies. She is also in love with her guardian angel, Casper, who is not allowed to have any type of sexual relationship since he is "serving time" for all the raping and pillaging he did as a Norse Viking.... yeah.... so the characters were great, but the story was a bit blah.

Spells and Stitches by Barbra Bretton - This is book #4 in the Sugar Maple series about the woman who is half magickal and lives in the magickally protected town of Sugar Maple and runs the knitting shop. Anyway, this is after she and her mortal boyfriend have saved the town yet again and now they are pregnant. He has been avoiding his large non magickal family she is 9 months pregnant and his family has no idea, so his mom shows up finds out she is going to be a grandma... chaos ensues... not the best in the series, but it moves the story line along. I am ready for the next one in the series. There are some great knitting patterns at the end of the book that I am going to try.

I am now starting A Demon Does It Better by Linda Wisdom. Where it is the 2nd in the Demon series, it is still carrying on with the Jazz books (the witch with the zombie bunny slippers?) so I am looking forward to reading it.

I finished American Gods and last night I started reading Stephen King: On Writing. I have to say that so far it has been the most entertaining book by a published author giving hints to new writers that I've read. The book is majorly autobiographical, so even if you're not interested in the writing tips it is a great read for Stephen King fans. He talks a lot about his childhood which provides a lot of insight into where his inspiration came from for his stories. I have to say I'm in awe. He was still a kid when he had his first story published in a magazine and had a couple of books published by the time he was 26 years old. He exposes a lot of his personality in the book - an he isn't nearly as creepy as his literary persona. Great read!

I'm about 2/3 of the way through Neil Gaiman's "American Gods." Lordy, that man can write! There aren't a lot of books out there that cause me to stop and re-read a passage for the sole purpose of enjoying the sound of the words or the turn of a phrase, but I've done that about a jillion times while reading this book.

At times I think I really get it and understand where he's going with it and at others I think I haven't a clue. The book contains some of the hottest sex scenes ever! Yet, it's hot from the erotica/fantasy perspective, not from the lust side. I don't know how else to describe it. Think worshipper being consumed by his passion for the goddess. Whew! I can't say anymore.

I LOVED THE COLORADO KID!!! I know everyone hated it because there was no resolution, but I don't know why, they tell you from the get go there isn't one and quite frankly the only place you truly find resolution is in works of fiction. Life never ties up all the ends in a neat little bundle! Bravo to Stephen King!!

I get bogged down doing exercises while reading a book and do much better if I read it all & then come back.

I'm reading The Colorado Kid - Stephen King. I realize everyone hates this book, but so far, I'm really loving it. (My first Kindle Book!)

I finished Destination Truth and now I'm reading Don Maass's book, "The Fire in Fiction." Lots of thought provoking information in there.

There are practical exercises at the end of each chapter and I'm not even looking at them right now. When I've read the whole book, I plan to put it on my writing resources shelf and pull it out once a month and do an exercise. The reading is important to my writing, but I've learned from experience that when I use any self-improvement book the way it was intended (i.e. doing the exercises for one chapter before I start reading the next) I get bogged down and never seem to finish the book. I did that with "The Spark" the first time I picked it up and it was a huge mistake. It works much better for me to read straight through to get the concepts and then schedule the lessons. This must be a function of how my post-aneurysm brain works because I used to go through this type of book format like it was a textbook, doing the homework as I went along. Now I don't have the patience for that, it seems.

Write on!

I'm reading Josh Gates' book Destination Truth: Memoirs of a Monster Hunter. I'm LOVING it! I'll save the rest of my comments for the PBMOC discussion of the book except to say that I found it necessary to tweet Josh Gates and ask him if he would please, please, please consider writing travel-based fiction.

Christmas brought even MORE books for my TBR stack including Stephen King's "On Writing," "The Fire in Fiction" by Donald Maas, "Reflections of St. Louis" (which is an anthology of poetry and essays written by members of the St. Louis Writers Guild, "The Red Thread" (an anthology of pieces written by memberes of the St. Charles Wee Writers), and a Neil Gaiman book that contains both "Anansi Boys" and "American Gods." Plus, I won a Erle Stanley Gardner book that contains two Perry Mason stories.
