Yup, I was sitting out in the sun all day yesterday in Florence, nice cool gentle breeze birds chirping amazing view of the mountains and working on a crocheted blanket. I think I enjoyed myself a little too much, It was perfect out! I'm headed to Polson for a week to house and pet sit for a friend, hope the weather is nice up there!!

Hi everyone!!! I want to share this with you all because I hope you'll love it too!!

My mom and I were about today, and I thought well why not do dinner, So I grabbed a bag of shrimp some pasta and white wine and made the tastiest shrimp scampi I've ever had!!

I added it to the Spark recipes, it's called Best Shrimp Scampi!!

Will you guys tell me what you think? (sorry vegetarians, and vegans, I love veggies too! ^.^)

If I were you, I'd try a different site or two to recalculate your BMR as that number is extremely high. Or are you a 350# 6.5 ft bodybuilder/athlete? (Remember that your BMR is the number of calories your body burns over a 24 hour period of COMPLETE rest -- as in NO activity...)

I thought I'd try checking my BMR from the site Debby posted, but then I found at the end that I would have to sign up for more junk e-mail...

You might try http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculat
or/

That's the one I've used and that answer is close to what Spark uses. The answer appears in the green box above the info you put in.

When you've got your BMR, you then multiply it by the factor used for your activity level with the Harris Benedict equation to find out what your actual expenditure is.

The Spark BMI calculator (first step for Spark BMR calculation) can be accessed by clicking on the "Edit Goals" button under the "Track Weight and other measurements" button on your "Start" page. Once that info is entered Spark will calculate your BMR for the Single Day Calorie Differential Report. Spark uses the sedentary/desk job multiplier when it calculates your estimated calorie burn.

To access the Spark formula for calculating BMR, go to

http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitn
ess_articles.asp?id=385

You will need to do your own arithmetic for the Spark calculations. I found this page by searching for BMR on the Spark site accessed by the Search box at the top of the page.

Just google BMR to find other calculators to just plug in the numbers. I just tried a few and my BMR estimates ranged from 1421 to 1485, which would give my estimated normal daily calorie burn at 1705 to 1782 to maintain my weight, which is more or less in line with what Spark uses for me and what I've observed over the years.

I hope that this information is useful to you and that this answer is not too long winded.

emoticon

That's pretty much it, except for the 2000 calories... I would be a blimp on that amount at my normal activity level! It is not one size (calorie range) fits all.

Spark bases your calorie range on your calculated basal metabolic rate which is calculated using your age, height, current weight and activity level. The top of the range is about 500 cal/per day below what your calculated BMR is (which gives you a 3500 cal deficit for a week or 1 pound) and the lower end is about 250-300 calories lower which gives approximately an additional 1/2 pound loss per week). The lower threshold that Spark uses never is lower than 1200 calories, the level which is necessary to get in all the minimum recommended levels of nutrients.

Increased activity can raise the calorie deficit, increasing the rate of loss. Since the body is not a machine, there are other things that can affect weight loss. A couple of the more common ones are the amount and quality of sleep and stress.

Spark uses two methods for the calorie range. The first one is outlined above and needs recalculating periodically as a person loses or gains weight. You have to initiate the process. The other method is a rolling average based on your calculated BMR and then adjusted daily according to the information you record the previous day on your nutrition and activity trackers. I prefer the first method so that if I am not tracking properly my range does not fluctuate markedly, but stays the same until I ask it to recalculate.

I hope this information helps you.

Hey team!! Did you guys get to enjoy the beautiful weather today?! I did, I went on an 11 mile bike ride, ouch!

I was wondering if you guys could tell me if I'm correct about the whole caloric deficit thing to lose weight?

So a person is supposed to eat 2000 calories?

But in order to lose weight you need a deficit right?

So the goal you set with spark people for instance to lose a pound a week, it calculates how much you should eat as your calorie goal???

Have you created it in the Spark Recipe Calculator? If you have and it is saved, whether or not you've published it, you can click on the button in the upper right corner of the Recipe Calculator page where it says "Go to Your Recipe Box".

In the picture of the recipe box, you can click on the recipe you want to save to the Nutrition Tracker.

When it brings up the recipe information, in the middle, above the nutritional information is a list of action choices, one of which is the choice to "Add this Recipe to my Nutrition Tracker". Clicking on that should give you the desired result.

Before Spark added the recipe option, I just used the Groupings category and added the ingredient amounts and used a fraction of the whole group for one serving. i.e. If the recipe made 4 servings, I use .25 of the group or a 10 serving group (usually soup) I use 0.1 for the serving. This can be noted in the title of the grouping.

When using this option, you do have to pick from the Groupings category.

I hope this information helps and works for you.

Hey team!!! Have any of you heard of a dietary supplement called Protandim?? If so what do you guys think about it? Good or bad?

I think I might have said this a while ago, but I have a traumatic brain injury with permanent nerve damage and a tremor on my left side, I am taking Protandim daily, and with in the first week ive noticed huge improvements with my focus, my communication skills, and my tremor is hardly noticeable!!!

Ive been off and on here alot, mostly using the mobile app to track my activity as I go. It's just about that time for hiking! Im sooo excited!!!

We must all be in winter hibernation mode.
So little chatting lately.

Wind is still cold, but is now from south not north, so current front must have moved on.

I've just realized it is not what I WANT, it is what I am willing to commit to and work for that will make me healthier.

From the Cleveland Clinic newsletter:
"As a nation, we’re eating about the same number of calories as we have for the past 20 years, yet obesity is on the rise. One culprit? Lack of physical activity. The number of American women who say they never exercise has increased nearly 33 percent in 16 years! For men, the number spiked 32 percent. Luckily, it doesn’t take much to reap the benefits of moving more. Just a few minutes of heart-rate-boosting activity can lower the risk of stroke, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Physical activity lowers symptoms of depression too. Make a “no-more-excuses” pledge to move more! Aim for at least 10,000 steps a day for the most health benefits. Strap on that pedometer and challenge yourself to add more steps each day. Or challenge your spouse, a friend or a co-worker to a walking contest; we’ll leave the prize up to you!"

The best cure for stressing is to count your blessings...and a long walk won't hurt either!

Some people go to the school and either walk in the gym or use the minimal weight room they have. They did have a 6:30 am class one year but I am too far out of town. I have the Wii Fit with a couple of different programs, some free weights, resistance bands and a stationary bike. Keeps me from getting bored.

I can do it with your help!

Made it home with heavy slush and heavy snow on the road outside Billings. As we went North and East-turned to dry, very windy snow and visibility low. Glad to be home. Still snowing-3" on the ground.

It was 40 yesterday and just around freezing today with a fair amount of wind. It's supposed to snow just enough to be annoying, but so far it hasn't. I was kind of hoping to get some outside
Christmas decor (mainly lights) up today, but I really don't want to fight the wind.

The forecast for the rest of the week seems to be for about average temperatures and fairly sunny.

I would have loved to see a 2 today. High was 0 F. and wind chill was in the -20 F range all day. It's now -10 and wind chill of -25. That sure gets your attention when you go outside...

It's supposed to be a whopping +4 tomorrow, but still blowing. I think winter has arrived here.

Can't believe how quickly the weather changed. Glad the temperature is above zero today but I am sure the wind chill brings it back down. Left Billings at 5:30 pm yesterday 15 degrees. 90 miles later in Melstone minus 7. My husband has a deer hanging outside. Hope it warms up some so we can get it butchered.

emoticon Yeah, I think the yard work ship has sailed...not that I'm complaining. I didn't get my window a/c out of the one window on my side of the duplex but I just covered it up. Too darn cold to mess with it now. Will have to wait until next weekend. I also need to get some plastic up on the bedroom windows on my mom's side. She should have paid someone to do it while I was in Kansas. I told her to do that but she waited for me...now I might not get to it.

If it doesn't warm up and melt off this snow it will be the first turkey day with snow cover that I can remember. Seems like it happened a lot when I was a kid because I remember traveling in it for Thanksgiving...but this bitter cold is just crappy!

The best cure for stressing is to count your blessings...and a long walk won't hurt either!

I've been trying to get the basement done. Plugged a hole I had a fan in, now need to fix up a couple windows that are not in good shape and have broken panes. Also need to replace a couple of panes on the back porch.

There's also yard work that needs to be done, but I think it is too late, we've already got snow...

Wind. Rain. Cold. Miserable. That pretty much sums up today. Supposed to be down to 20F or so tonight. That should get rid of the mosquitoes (can you believe they were still out?).

Had a very rough week with a car accident on 10/11, then flat tire, and then 2 long days at Jury duty. Today we spent painting the inside of my husband's shop. Dish network-scheduled from 8-12noon, rescheduled at 7:40am to 2-3:15 pm, at 3 pm he called and said he was going back to Billings first-he didn't and he just left at 5pm. looking for a day off. Beautiful weather.

I have sent JSMURRILLO1 a Spark Mail replying to this post -- here is some of what I wrote:

One very obvious problem I see is that the only way to interact with you is to send a SparkMail message.

If you are serious in wanting interaction, you can't have a page that no one can access.

If you want a private page, in order to have people interact with you, you must "friend" them, otherwise they cannot read any of your blogs or status posts, only comments that you leave on their blogs or pages, or posts you make to team forums.

You can open up your page by going to your Spark page, selecting "Edit My Spark Page" on the right side of the page. Once you've done that, look at the "More Options" column (right side) and select the privacy options you want. For myself, I don't check the following boxes --
Only allow my SparkFriends to see my page
Turn my page offline
Share My Food Tracker
Share My Fitness Tracker and
Show I Ordered the Spark Activity Tracker icon

This lets anyone who wants to visit my page find out a bit about me, who my Spark Friends are and what teams I belong to. Remember, you control what information visitors see.

I am trying to give you some information that may have escaped your notice. I didn't think that Spark gave very good instructions when I first set up my page, and I don't know if there has been improvement. There are a lot of features that Spark used to have that are no longer available, some of these changes I believe are backlash from the current political correctness attitudes and privacy issues.

I wish you the very best on your journey to better health.

i spent a significant amount of time last week after i tucked my kids into bed, only to have no response at all from the Mt team. i was bummed bc i need support right now. i guess i did it wrong but what a headache. i don't want to spend my time online in the evening. i need to relax and read a book, not sit in front of a screen.

Im so ready for the snow! I love walking all around town in the colder weather with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa. the warmer weather makes me feel sluggish for some reason. I am starting my winter garden, squash, chillies, lettuce, spinach, herbs, beans, I garden inside over the winter.

I have a question, does anyone know anybody in Missoula who is trying to rehome their cat? I just got approved for a service animal for my depression and i want a cat. If anyone could help thatd be great! =)

Today's project-pull all the freeze killed vines out of the garden and put over the fence so the sheep and our goat, Casper, can eat. Then I juiced 2 pomegranates and 5 cactus pears that I received in a bountiful baskets delivery. The pomegranates I got 2 weeks ago, the cactus pears 4 weeks ago. I have mixed the juice together but haven't decided what to make with it. jelly would be good but I can never get jelly to set. Maybe some sort of tart or custard. emoticon Also received 6 lemons in the basket I picked up today so I need a recipe for those too. emoticon

It's cool and rainy where I am here in NE Montana - It rained for about 24 hours, and now the prediction is for showers for most of the week and cool temps. So far today it hasn't hit 50F.

As if we really needed more moisture after the 8 inches or so we got a month ago...

Oh well, my basement should be dry by spring - Hooray for gumbo dirt floors!! (Plus, no need for a humidifier...)

Besides kitchen cleaning, today's project is to try to get the furnace area cleaned and dried a bit. I finally bit the bullet yesterday and got a portable electric heater to try to get the area dried out a bit.

Hope everyone has a good afternoon/evening.

It's good to see that you haven't given up. Things have been pretty quiet here, I think everyone is doing end of summer things before the cooler weather hits this weekend.

You are right about sparkpeople taking up too much time and not enough time off your butt.
I only have a couple spark teams that I frequent, but belong to a few more "official administrative" teams that I only use to ask a sparkpeople kinda question on.

Hope everyone has a sparky day, and get off your butt!

Commenting on Linda's post --

In my years on here (coming up quickly on five), I have noticed that a lot of people are gung-ho and join lots of teams when they join Spark. I must say that I am guilty of that myself. I get blog notices from one person who is on over 300 teams. I really don't get that, there's no way to keep up on that many...

When I joined, the default choice was a public Spark page. I don't really know if that is still the case, but from the recent trend I've noticed and other changes that have been made to the Spark site, I think that has changed. I haven't gone so far as to "join" with a dummy account to test my theory. It's not that important to me to have that knowledge.

I joined Spark to get points from another site so I wonder how many of the newer members have done that. I was a member for a while before I really started to use the trackers and then it was a bit longer before I posted a blog. I am not much of a blogger but I try to post something at least once a week (I see it's been six weeks now...).

However, like you I found that I was spending too much time on Spark and not enough time off my butt and doing things -- like cleaning house, exercising, etc. Unlike you, I didn't cut back a lot, but I did trim my Spark teams to ones that I feel I could maybe contribute to. Thinking about my recent activity on Spark, I may be trimming again. I won't drop the Montana team as I feel that there is a possibility of seeing someone on it that I know and/or meeting some of the members in person.

I think that the social interaction on Spark is great for a lot of people, but everything takes time and I think that a lot of members lose interest when they discover that {{GASP}} it takes work and a fair amount of time to utilize this site for the best results. Facebook is much easier (I think -- I don't have an account) and people there aren't there for the life style.

I think that each person must choose how much time to spend on Spark and how much of that time to use socializing, but I sure wish that people who join teams would at least let other team members get to know them by setting up Spark pages and letting their team (at least) have access to the information on that page.

Have a great week everyone.

Moon-I am a team leader and also had one of the Class Teams for those who join in a week. I couldn't convince many of them to put together a spark page. And more than 10,000 people joined in that week. Many never set up a page so there was no way to contact them. On my walking team we show about 100 members but only about 25 post fitness minutes each week and about 45 post to earn spark points-but none of them post to the walking team. It used to be very active and now the thing should just be gone. The woman who set it up and invited me to join went offline without a word in January and the one I invited to help me lead the team hasn't posted since May.

You have to click on the MT team to join it. I think many of the newbies just click but then never introduce themselves or even stay active in any form on SP.

I used to keep track of all the stats for my team but it was a waste of time. I track my fitness and food and have a good amount of 'other goals' that I track. I spin for the teams-always for MT and 12 Weeks Walking-and thanks for the tip about being able to go back to days you miss-I am on borrowed computer time TFN so it's been great to go back and give points.

I don't have any idea what would make me more active on SP. I was spending too much time on the computer and not enough being active so I cut way back. I also cut way back on friends and teams so I could live in real life! I like to check in now and then but I am a crappy team member because I certainly don't participate in any team like I did in the beginning!

The best cure for stressing is to count your blessings...and a long walk won't hurt either!

Never give up what you want the MOST for what you want at the MOMENT!

You can tell if a page/profile is viewable to others by the choices listed under the profile image that appears when you post something.

If you have a viewable page, there will be three menu buttons to chose from under your image. They will be "My Spark Page", "Send Private Message", or "Reply". If you have a private page, there will be no "My Spark Page" option.

To make your page accessible, you go to your page and choose "Edit my Spark Page" and from there look to the right hand side of the color wheel where it lists "More Options".

Unclick the "Turn my page offline" box and others will be able to go to your Spark Page. If you want to have your page viewable by anyone who happens by you will need to also uncheck the "Only allow my SparkFriends to see my page" box.

Right now I have the "Link to my recent message board posts", "Allow comments on my page (you have ability to delete)", "Email me when I receive a comment (on my page, a photo, or blog), SparkGoodie or Trophy", "Show My SparkFavorites on my page", and "Show My Activity Feed on my page" boxes checked. You can set your level of interaction there. (I'm not sure what "Show My SparkFavorites on my page" means as I don't see that heading anywhere...)

My theory about why there are so many "private" pages currently is that when a new account is set up, the default Spark setting is to "Turn my page offline". I have not tested this out by opening a different account, so at the moment, it is just a theory of mine. Any observations from newer members either supporting or disproving this theory would be welcome.

I hope this information will help you, A_GAME, and also any other team members who would like to interact more with other Sparkies.
