You are right about sparkpeople taking up too much time and not enough time off your butt.
I only have a couple spark teams that I frequent, but belong to a few more "official administrative" teams that I only use to ask a sparkpeople kinda question on.

Hope everyone has a sparky day, and get off your butt!

Commenting on Linda's post --

In my years on here (coming up quickly on five), I have noticed that a lot of people are gung-ho and join lots of teams when they join Spark. I must say that I am guilty of that myself. I get blog notices from one person who is on over 300 teams. I really don't get that, there's no way to keep up on that many...

When I joined, the default choice was a public Spark page. I don't really know if that is still the case, but from the recent trend I've noticed and other changes that have been made to the Spark site, I think that has changed. I haven't gone so far as to "join" with a dummy account to test my theory. It's not that important to me to have that knowledge.

I joined Spark to get points from another site so I wonder how many of the newer members have done that. I was a member for a while before I really started to use the trackers and then it was a bit longer before I posted a blog. I am not much of a blogger but I try to post something at least once a week (I see it's been six weeks now...).

However, like you I found that I was spending too much time on Spark and not enough time off my butt and doing things -- like cleaning house, exercising, etc. Unlike you, I didn't cut back a lot, but I did trim my Spark teams to ones that I feel I could maybe contribute to. Thinking about my recent activity on Spark, I may be trimming again. I won't drop the Montana team as I feel that there is a possibility of seeing someone on it that I know and/or meeting some of the members in person.

I think that the social interaction on Spark is great for a lot of people, but everything takes time and I think that a lot of members lose interest when they discover that {{GASP}} it takes work and a fair amount of time to utilize this site for the best results. Facebook is much easier (I think -- I don't have an account) and people there aren't there for the life style.

I think that each person must choose how much time to spend on Spark and how much of that time to use socializing, but I sure wish that people who join teams would at least let other team members get to know them by setting up Spark pages and letting their team (at least) have access to the information on that page.

Have a great week everyone.

Moon-I am a team leader and also had one of the Class Teams for those who join in a week. I couldn't convince many of them to put together a spark page. And more than 10,000 people joined in that week. Many never set up a page so there was no way to contact them. On my walking team we show about 100 members but only about 25 post fitness minutes each week and about 45 post to earn spark points-but none of them post to the walking team. It used to be very active and now the thing should just be gone. The woman who set it up and invited me to join went offline without a word in January and the one I invited to help me lead the team hasn't posted since May.

You have to click on the MT team to join it. I think many of the newbies just click but then never introduce themselves or even stay active in any form on SP.

I used to keep track of all the stats for my team but it was a waste of time. I track my fitness and food and have a good amount of 'other goals' that I track. I spin for the teams-always for MT and 12 Weeks Walking-and thanks for the tip about being able to go back to days you miss-I am on borrowed computer time TFN so it's been great to go back and give points.

I don't have any idea what would make me more active on SP. I was spending too much time on the computer and not enough being active so I cut way back. I also cut way back on friends and teams so I could live in real life! I like to check in now and then but I am a crappy team member because I certainly don't participate in any team like I did in the beginning!

The best cure for stressing is to count your blessings...and a long walk won't hurt either!

You can tell if a page/profile is viewable to others by the choices listed under the profile image that appears when you post something.

If you have a viewable page, there will be three menu buttons to chose from under your image. They will be "My Spark Page", "Send Private Message", or "Reply". If you have a private page, there will be no "My Spark Page" option.

To make your page accessible, you go to your page and choose "Edit my Spark Page" and from there look to the right hand side of the color wheel where it lists "More Options".

Unclick the "Turn my page offline" box and others will be able to go to your Spark Page. If you want to have your page viewable by anyone who happens by you will need to also uncheck the "Only allow my SparkFriends to see my page" box.

Right now I have the "Link to my recent message board posts", "Allow comments on my page (you have ability to delete)", "Email me when I receive a comment (on my page, a photo, or blog), SparkGoodie or Trophy", "Show My SparkFavorites on my page", and "Show My Activity Feed on my page" boxes checked. You can set your level of interaction there. (I'm not sure what "Show My SparkFavorites on my page" means as I don't see that heading anywhere...)

My theory about why there are so many "private" pages currently is that when a new account is set up, the default Spark setting is to "Turn my page offline". I have not tested this out by opening a different account, so at the moment, it is just a theory of mine. Any observations from newer members either supporting or disproving this theory would be welcome.

I hope this information will help you, A_GAME, and also any other team members who would like to interact more with other Sparkies.

More thoughts on the "team spirit" of the Montana team.

I just pulled up the members list (newest to oldest) and there were 35 Sparkers listed before there was one that had a profile - accessible or not... I have a problem understanding why a person would be part of a team when they hide from view.

I'm not sure how these people even landed on the Montana team. Does Spark automatically put them here when they fill out their member application, just like you are assigned to the weekly team when you sign up?

Just pondering...

Moonchaser those were very interesting statistics you posted.
I think you are right about having interests in common. The team that posts everyday does have a lot in common.

In reference to CTOMEK1-123's comment from yesterday --

You got me curious, so I did a bit of research -- I went to the Team Members list showing all members sorted by newest member to longest member and this is what I found.

I looked at 40 pages which got me back about six months. On page 36, I finally got to a page that showed more than three member profiles that weren't off-line. Of the four on that page, three pages were open to viewing, the other one was only open to "friends". There are 24 members shown on each page, so that makes one in eight that actually welcome interaction. Given our team membership of a bit less than 24,000, that means that there are about 3000 who we are actually able to interact with. There is probably less than 10% who join and set up pages who are really interactive at any one time, which brings us to about 300 people who participate at any given time.

I just checked the team statistics for June and there were 306 Spark Montana members who earned Spark Points for the month. 189 members posted some exercise minutes for June.

Given that this team has a geographical area focus, not an interest group focus, I think that we will never really be one of the more active teams. Other than love for the Big Sky country and our eating challenges, we probably don't have all that much in common.

Just thought I'd put in my 2 cent's worth for food for thought.

I do have a theory of why there are so many off-line pages these days and it has to do with Spark's privacy changes, but that is another whole comment (or blog).

This team kinda waxes and wanes.

Hope everyone had a good 4th! We had natures fireworks as a nasty little thunderstorm came through around 6:30 yesterday evening, but clear up in time for every to get out and shoot them off. (I have a dog scared to death of thunderstorms and fireworks, he was completely exhausted last night!)

Hello everyone! I know i should check in here more often. The montana team just doesn't seem to be very active. I have a team that we have chatted almost daily for about 6 years now. They seem like they are truly my friends. I often wonder though how much you really can be over the internet. Especially after watching that Catfish show on MTV! lol

BTW, I was just down in Missoula this weekend. Took DD#3 to her dorm, she's taking some classes this summer. It was really cool down there and a bit windy! Brrr, I was hoping for some sunshine a nice day to walk around downtown!

Actually A_Game, you can build your own workout! At least I do, I put my exercises in the the "grouplings" section, I have several circuits I do and just put them in their. Makes its easy to track!

You know what feature the "Track your fitness" section should have? It should have a "build your workout" feature, just sayin, but i think it would be handy for like circuit training

Right in the middle of yard work, with no warning whatsoever, it started pouring! Mad dash to put things away and close up. By the time we got to the house, DH and I were soaked. The sun will probably break through in 5 min.!

LOL melting in the rain! When we first moved here we had to pick up some stuff at the grocery store (including a broom). We had two carts and my DH said he would push the one with the broom because he didn't want me riding the broom around the store! (so I don't out running in the rain either!)

Decided today and yesterday I wasn't going to melt if I walked in the rain (yeah, like that is about to happen), so went ahead and got only slightly wet. I would appreciate some slightly better weather so I can do some outside painting and transplant my plant sale finds.

What do you guys think about the new team page format? I am totally bummed!! If I wanted to post things on "walls" I would do it on Facebook. I really don't think that Spark should be a Facebook wannabe. And I really miss having a link to blogs by team members. All in all I don't think that this is an improvement.

I have to remember to take my camera and go meadowlark hunting. I need to bone up on how to make a video clip with it. I think it would be great to post on here.

You're right! The birds are back! It seems like most years the geese and sandhill cranes that nest by the creek are flooded out. I hope they have a good year without flooding!

My Meadowlark showed up last week. Robins in the bird bath. Magpie at bird feeder. Little birds, maybe sparrows wolfed down all sunflower seeds!

Yesterday on my way to work I saw several really fluffy robins. Then when I got out of the car, I was serenaded by a meadowlark. Spring MUST be here, the birds think so...

And Friday night when I left work, I saw lightning!

Montanafocus, that is really cool! I never thought of a baby monitor to hear the birds!
We have a woodpecker that pecks on the metal vent that comes out of the fireplace. At first I didn't know what that awful noise was, but now that I know it's not too bad! Silly birds! LOVE them!

I set up the coffee maker the night before. All my brain has to do in the morning is plug it in, and I can usually manage that.

This year, a male meadowlark has taken to singing from s spot on our roof and the song comes right down the stove vent! Love it. Talk about loud.

Some years, I set up a baby monitor so we can hear the birds sing without opening the door if it is really cold.

We finally have a coffeemaker that is simple enough to use I can do make coffee half asleep - which is my usual state when making coffee. Provided I empty the carafe before starting a new batch, it doesn't even overflow!

Lehia - love the jokes. They've made my day! emoticon

Some of the coffee makers today take either a professional IT person or an 8 yr old to get the programming done...

What ever happened to using and on/off switch or just plugging/unplugging the darned thing?

Or easier yet, the enamel pot on the back of the wood cookstove...

Sometimes the good old days don't look quite as good!! (But at least the wood chopping was good cardio!)

Who Makes the Coffee??
A married couple were arguing who is making the coffee, the wife said that in the Bible it says that men should make the coffee and the husband asked her where it said that. The wife opened the Bible and said: "Right here in HEBREWS!

A little boy opened the big family bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. "Mama, look what I found", the boy called out. "What have you got there, dear?" With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear!"

Thank God the snow didn't stick. I've been a little m.I.a. but no worries still tracking and noticing a trend on my end. I will correct this problem and be a happy little clam.

One day while at her job as a bank loan officer, Patty emoticon Black, had a frog emoticon hop onto her desk and say, "I would like to apply for a lily-pad improvement loan emoticon ." Patty looked incredulously at the frog and said, "I'm sorry, we don't loan money to frogs." To which the frog replied, "I have collateral," as he handed her a small ceramic trinket emoticon . Not wanting to be impolite, Patty said, "I don't know. I'll have to talk to the bank manager."

She walked back to the manager's emoticon office and said, "There is a frog out here, asking for a lily-pad improvement loan, and this trinket is all he has for collateral." The bank manager picked up the trinket and looked at it carefully. Then smiling he turned to Patty and said, "Why it's a knick-knack, Patty Black. Give the frog a loan." emoticon
