Been a hard summer for my spark journey. Grieving the loss of my brother who passed away this spring and although I am starting to have good days, most of them have just been grief riddled so I have had no desire to journey to better health. Not to mention the heat and smoky air puts a damper on any outside exercise plans.

I'm looking forward to the changes of seasons as Autumn begins her transition!

So sorry to hear about your knee WEEZIEJEAN. Injuries are not fun.

Hi, It was been a smoky August here in Western Montana. It is so sad to see all the fires that are happening across the Northwest. I injured my knee this summer and finally went to the doctor. I have bursitis of the knee cap and have to take it easy for a couple of weeks. It is a bummer not to be able to go walking and hiking. I still do my upper body weight workout. If anyone has any ideas of something I can do for exercise that won't stress my knee I would appreciate it. emoticon

Lehia, that definitely sounds like a heck of a time with all the teenagers. I hope you were able to enjoy yourself at some point!

I couldn't believe the amount of home fireworks either. We had the fire dept go by a couple times, it's sad that with it being so dry and all the fires around that people would push the limits like that. Billing's display was amazing though, and it was so nice not to have to leave our front yard!

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Too many fireworks going off in our area. They are illegal in the city but everyone still shoots them off and I have a dog (originally from a reservation here) that is terrified of them so it was a rough night. Billings had a fireworks related death too. Sad!

The two big shows in our area are very nice though.

How is everyone 4th? I had the not so happy privilege of working with nothing but teenagers. Its so dry here on the rez that the only place that i am aware of that had a fire work show was Polson. Its kind of odd to not see any fire works this time of year. Just thankfully no one was stupid in part of my neighbor hood to set any off.

Yea, Kalispell has grown alot!! I'd move back if I didn't have a job and my mom here. My grandmother lives in Kalispell, and I know that town like the back of my hand. I used to walk all over that town, here in Msla I'm even afraid to walk around the block, so many people yell names and cat calls here. Which I dislike very much. On the other hand I do love my apartment and my garden and some of the people here are nice. Plus I feel you dont have to go too far to be in nature

I was in Kalispell about 10 days ago and I can't believe how much it has grown in the 2 1/2 years since I'd been there -- and I only saw the part from West Reserve south to downtown and then out #2 to K-Mart and up to Col Falls. The shopping center around Costco has grown tremendously...

Will be back later this month for a family reunion in the Eureka area and will probably pick cherries on Flathead Lake.

Lake Elmo is a small lake in Billings. I believe it is actually a state park.

Congrats on your new job JANINESJOURNEY! Glad to hear you enjoyed Lake Elmo too. I live on the other end of town so don't get there much but it a nice place for kids.

I am sticking as close to air conditioning as possible to beat this heat. Headed back to the gym tonight after being gone way too long from there though. It will be miserable but time to get my fitness minutes moving again.

Praying for the fire fighters and everyone in the path of the destruction. Such a sad time each summer when the fire season starts.

The kids and I found Lake Elmo today. It was crowded but so refreshing! Need to enjoy it while we can, I just found a job and will be starting soon. Kind of bittersweet because I'll miss being with the kids all day, but it sure will be nice to have adult conversation throughout the day again! Plus it definitely will be nice not to be on such a tight budget anymore.

I hope everyone's having keeping cool this week!

Hey Team!! Ugh I just don't like heat period, I'm yelling at Autumn to hurry up and get here, this heat wave is so crazy, I'm glad its cooler now though. So on Monday I took in some baby Starlings, they are doing good, i love wildlife rehab! I guess they had fallen from their nest, which is sad.

What did everyone do to stay cool the past few days? I tried swimming but I really don't like the river, I'll get in a lake no problem, it's strange haha!

Hello everyone - keep those water bottles handy. I sure am glad this heat isn't typical for us. We were out of town all weekend, south in Wyoming and it wasn't nearly as hot. Praying our state doesn't burn up now as I'm seeing news articles that this will be a bad year for fires.

I've been wondering why the "Daily Chat' topic is no longer a "sticky" topic and why the topics designated as "sticky" are in the General Discussion instead of the areas they were in originally.

Janine, you should really try to catch them. It's easier when you live in the country away from all the light pollution. I've seen some really spectacular aurorae in the summer, but that is harder since we live so far north there aren't that many hours of real darkness to see them. I've seen lots of them when I was driving home from work (30 miles) in the winter when it gets dark before 5 p.m. Now that my drive is 2 miles, I don't see them that often. I also saw them quite often when I was tending bar and closing between midnight and 2 a.m.

Sometimes here in northern Montana, the whole sky is covered!

Good luck on getting to see some.

I've looked out a few times when I get up for a pit stop, but so far haven't spotted any. I have seen some really amazing shows in the past, especially when I was tending bar on the night shift.

I know the northern lights are suppose to be out, unfortunately it's too light when I go to bed (at about 10:45) and too light when I get up (at about 5:00). Maybe I'll try to get up in the middle of the night to see them!

I too love living in Montana! I grew up in Troy Montana but moved to California for about twenty years. I feel blessed to wake up and look at my beautiful mountain view everyday.

I went to Bozeman for week long teaching conference and am so happy I did not gain any weight. It is so difficult to make the right choices when eating out all week. Sometimes I ate healthy and other times I splurged. I was sure I had gain weight over the week but eating salads for lunch everyday paid off. No weight gain. emoticon

The husband had to go down to Cody yesterday to visit one of his clinics, so the kids and I tagged along with him. We had a great day walking around downtown and visiting Old Trail Town. What a beautiful area, and a perfect way to get my steps in! Definitely loving living in MT and enjoying the beauty and more laid back living it has to offer. I was really nervous about the move, but now I'm really hoping the husband decides to settle here for a while. We were just talking this morning as we were having breakfast on the deck that the last couple weeks have been the most we've utilized our patio furniture in the past 15 years both in the morning and at night relaxing under the stars...and we've lived in Florida and California!

I hope everyone's having an amazing Saturday!

I completely agree about Montana. Give me a mountain and a stream any day over the ocean. I like to visit the ocean but wouldn't want to live there.

I fall off the wagon on a daily basis it seems. I'm grateful to spark because since joining here I have not gained any more weight than where I started 5 years ago but I'm also nearly at the same weight as I was then...losing and gaining it back over and over. Its all because of my own personal choices though - addiction to food...period!

For me its still a great place to be. A support group for my life.

Keep on plugging away at the journey ladies! Every positive decision is one less negative one in my book!

I too had issues this past week with over eating. Over eaters anonymous sounds like a decent plan. Maybe with O.A. I can feel a little more supported. Either way I know if I up my veggies and fruits I stay fuller longer. Plus I upped my fiber. That helped.

Try not to be to hard on your self sweetie. You some times have to plan for failures. Sounds odd, but as long as you come back here and vent it out we can help!

Lehia, I couldn't have worded that any better! People have asked me why I don't move to bigger cities, Montana is way to pretty and inspiring to give up for a crammed over populated area with no fresh air.

Ugh, I kinda fell off the wagon, I was doing so well and I had lost a bit of weight a week ago, I weighed and measured my waist to hip ratio only to find I gained all I had lost back. I know what happened, I feel weak and super hungry after I lose weight, and I went on an eating adventure. I ate healthy food. But ruined my caloric deficit..........

Whats the point of losing weight if you cant eat and feel good and energized??

I know the real goal is to become healthier, but Id love to lose weight and still be healthier and happy and energized...

blessed2beme, You are welcome.

Montana is a beautiful place to live. Its waters are almost always clear and ice cold. Not to mention we have some pretty looking scenery. I was once asked if I would rather live near an ocean or here in the mountains. I pick the mountains. Not that the ocean isn't pretty, but these mountains i can hike in and see various animals and amazing scenery. The hidden lakes and creeks are a special treat.

Now I am not saying that the ocean doesn't have its charms. i just like the mountains.

Hey ladies! Yes i think we are all suffering from some heat, but as long as it wont slow us down to much i think we will pull through.

emoticon Mttravels, glad i could point it out! Most times i don't think of the non scale victories, but i am trying to focus more on them and how I feel. The scale shouldn't matter to much. Focus on health.

emoticon Blessedtobeme, welcome back. We all go through spurts of what you are going through. Its always nice when you can come back to spark people and be accepted with open arms. We don't judge each other here we attempt to motivate. We are the spark people family. We are always here to help!

emoticon Debbyfrommt, I know the feeling! I currently want to run through the sprinkler. I am seriously thinking about buying an inflatable pool and just set it up in the yard and soak. I don't care if i cannot swim just let me soak!

Hey Montanans! I'm really struggling with a positive attitude right now so started exploring the site for more motivation and realized there is activity in the team here. Looks like I'm missing out on a lot.

I hope everyone has a great day and find a reason to smile and grow! I know I'm growing webbed feet from all the rain.

Congrats MTTRAVELS on your 5 mile bike ride!!!

Hey Lehia, thanks so much for pointing out Endurance as a non scale victory! I've reached that one too!! High five* emoticon

Went on a 5 mile bike ride this evening!!

I'm starting to feel better now, with my calorie count spark people set for me. Not exhausted today!!

I love food!! Haha!! I'm remembering how much I love fresh veggies and fruits and homemade food! Which doesn't have all the extra calories and what not pre-made food has in it. I think my body is trying to get over not eating the premade foods and processed foods I used to eat.

I dont really take baby steps towards eating healthier. I've just dropped my old eating habbits and picked up new ones immediately. Bad Idea... My body wasnt ready for it.

Cheers! emoticon

I have been feeling more lazy then anything since this heat. I went for a walk with my sister in the 89 degree weather chugging all the water i had in my water bottle while we were only half way through the walk. Stopped in the shade and relaxed a bit with the weeping willow peeing on me. LOL.

I haven't moved much on the scale for a few days, but i have noticed i have more endurance for things and not as easily winded. So i guess a non scale victory is always welcomed.

Have you thought about changing your calorie consumption a little bit. I noticed when i eat roughly the 1,800 Calories i feel fine, but sometime if i eat less then that I get fatigued some and a little disconnected. I had to change my plan a bit to keep from getting that way.

I understand the looking at food and poof there are the magical 10 pounds that you just burned off about a week ago and its back. All from looking at food.

Yeshhhh!!! Oh my goodness, my boyfriend pushed me to bike ride 7.8 miles in this heat!

At least the hard work is paying off, thank goodness!

I lost another 2.2 lbs and am very excited to be where I am. Just super confused, I feel miserable day in and day out with all the calorie cutting emoticon (did ok today, made it in my goal range) I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted just in proportion. Today if I even look at a cookie I gain 8 pounds emoticon . I'm super confused, can your body really change by what you eat that much from late teens to early twenties?

I was exercising everyday like crazy, and since I moved to Missoula have been very sedentary but getting back into being active (have been for the past year or so). emoticon

Today, I can concentrate on getting my Spark back. My DH became ill in mid-March and it took nearly 3 months of inept care to determine he has pancreatic cancer. On the upside, he has found the best surgeon in the state for this (Kalispell), had a long, long surgery on Thursday, is doing very well and is now in the 25% of folks who can expect a 5year survival. It has been a dramatic ride for both of us and was hard to leave him yesterday to drive back to Whitehall, but the future looks better than it did a week or so ago.

emoticon

I've just realized it is not what I WANT, it is what I am willing to commit to and work for that will make me healthier.

My husbands grand mother bought me some diabetic socks. I don't have Diabetes, but they are very soft and comfortable. Good for swollen ankles. When i first started this journey many years ago my ankles would swell up all the time. I don't know what changed, but i am glad that it did. Sorry to hear you two ladies are struggling with it. I hope that it gets better for you both.

My ankles swell every day. I wear support stockings to keep the swelling down and have done so for years. They aren't really fashionable if you like shorts, but I usually wear jeans, so they are fine.

I feel super discouraged. Every time I walk my ankles swell, I recently managed to walk 9 miles in one day, giving myself a blister on the bottom of my foot (which is gone now) but I walked on the outside of my foot so i wouldn't step on my blister, and it elongated the outside of my right calf muscle (not a good thing). My right side is my good side. I hate having nerve damage some days.... It messes me up... =/ I apologize for venting,

Joined back in so I could keep spinning for points for the old MT team while I am away for the summer.

Im using recycled plastic bottles and cutting them in half, poking holes in the bottom, and starting seeds in them! My brother taught me that.

Plus you can set up a shower system using the top halves with the lid on them. just poke holes in the lid, and hook a hose or tube to a bigger plastic bottle top where the lid should be, put hose in the other bottle top or hanging above it, add water to bigger bottle top with tube connected, water is drained into other bottle top with lid with holes in it, and you have a shower. =) lol im creative.

In the "olden" days, a lot of people used "hot caps" mad out of waxed paper when they set out tender plants. The frosted covering kept the plants from getting too hot. I wouldn't use clear coverings during day time as they would probably generate enough heat to cook the plants. I think that gallon milk jugs with the bottoms cut out and the screw tops off would probably work, although I haven't personally tried them. (I'm not usually early enough to have to protect plants from a late frost...) I would take them off after the end of May.

Good luck! And remember that frost is possible any time in the Lewistown area.

I have heard that you could cut the tops of big plastic pop bottles or use glass jars and cover the plants with them at the end of the night to protect them from cold temps. But seeing how this is the first time i am actually attempting to grow things i dont know if it would work,
