I believe if you reached starvation mode you have already messed up good eating habits at lease for that day. You will begin to eat like your minds is bad.

I think if you're stomach is growling it's too late, kind of like when you feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated.

So topcat do you think it's best to eat when your stomach growls or just eat several times a day?

I was also told by my nutritionist that if you don't eat enough calories your body goes into starvation mode thinking that you don't have enough food so it reserves your fat storage so that you don't essentially "die of starvation".

With Olympic athletes some of them consume 10,000+ calories a day, however, they burn it off with their rigorous training routines. So needless to say, it's not how many calories you take in all the time, it's how much you burn off. So if you're only taking in 1000 calories a day and you're burning off 100, you're still not going to see a lot of weight loss since you're body is holding onto the fat so you won't waste away.

I totally agree with you TOPCAT92. You'll probably gain more weight once you start eating on your weight loss program again. It's worse than a yo yo diet. I found weight watcher's to be the best diet. emoticon

in order to lose weight one needs to eat enough and excercise in some form or mode or more. on weight watchers the momentum plan does just this --if you are hungry eat with mderation if not do not.

Oh what timing! Our minds run on the same frequency I think. Any way, my nutrishonist called for our monthly up date. I told her of the 5 lb. that has returned. truly wish once they were lost they would never find the way back to my body! lol.
Now for the Ophra "Eye opening ah hah" she explained to me that our body needs so many calories a day to get reved up ( metabolism) mine she suggested calorie intake should be around 1600. I have to be consistent in the amount of calories everyday or my body gets the message that "she ate 875 cal. today, 900, yesterday, 1300, the day before...anyway my body takes an average and when I eat 1600 it says okay gang lets store some away in the south fourty fat field, cause she is probably gonna starve us the next few days and we have to stay healthy for those exercises she started. It is like haveing two batteries if one is old and one is new the new one will go down to the old ones level cause that is the way it works, the old one can not increase charge. Our body needs consistant messages from our intake, to have regular output. It needs a certain amount of calorie intake on a daily basis to lose weight or the messages from jumping, binging, starving get all jumbled and our body goes for the lowest point and stays there unless we commit to tell it " No I did not mean to do it" I have changed, now hear this I am eating consistantly 1600 cal per day, when you get the message, that I am really doing this you will stop storing the extra calories that turn into pounds and inches and "we" will be able to sign a contract to care for each other for the rest of our lives." then exercise, move, after your body gets this in it's computor and factors all the benifits u are trying to give it everything will fall into place and you will begin the downward spiral we all want to attain in useless fat. Let me know what you think, did I explain it plain enough are u confused? emoticon

I commented on this one before but I just had to add that if I attempt to go into a starvational mode I find that I am searching the fridge a hundred times for something to forage on before bedtime-which totally sucks.

I love this! I've attempted to cut bread before but am such a carbaholic.

I will get there, just one step at a time.

when you work out hard ..like the cardio and weights ..your body does need more ...a point to remember is 5 to 6 small meals a day at 300 calories a meal to achieve the weight loss you want ..that means that you are keeping your body metabolism going ...as a small meal ..what I do is I eat a carb ..veggie or fruit ..then a protein ..tuna fish or egg or chicken breast ...then a grain ...wheat bread ..pasta ...now a typical day would be this ..ex.....
breakfast
oatmeat with flax seed ...a piece of fruit ..and coffee or 1 egg .. 1 turkey sausage and a piece of wheat toast
snack
yogurt or piece of fruit
lunch
tuna fish sandwhich on whole grain toast and grapes with a bottle of water or I will have a whey protein shake with a container of yogurt and some fruit in it
snack
whey protein shake after my workout or yogurt
dinner
chicken breast without skin
salad with choice of veggies and low fat dressing
brocolli or salmon with salad and veggies
or whole wheat spaghetti with sauce and salad and shrimp
snack fruit whey protein should only be taken if working out or cardio
now this is just something that I do ..and wanted to share with you ...another group in here burn the fat feed the muscle is good for your ? and has helped me achieve this diet ...hope this helps you

I find it hard TO EAT more than I THINK I SHOULD BE eating. I feel like its way too many calories, but this article makes so MUCH sense!

I'm glad I found this! Thanks for the information b/c I still feel like I can't seem to lose and have been here on SP since August 18th! emoticon

My family doctor says ,"meat don't make you fat, starch does" I cut back on starch yesterday and ate more meats and that scale moved 1 lbs this am after being stuck for 3 wks.I still have 40 lbs to go but I am determined to stick to it and be healthy. Just keep hanging on,knowing that your health is so important. I am sticking to 1200 calories.drinking the water and eating the fruits and veggies .

La.Vita.Bella, you are absolutely correct, if you cut on bread the body will burn fats instead of carbs. Theoretically, anybody following that should see results sooner or later. In fact, in 12 days I've lost 5 lb so I can't complain for now.
Good luck emoticon

I have also done the same as TEACHFORAMERICA in cutting out all of the useless calories (a.k.a. sugar and most carbs) to ensure that what I am putting in my body is only food that can be used as fuel. I thought I would mention that as a part of changing my routine by eating a few hundred more calories a day, I visited my doctor to make sure that nothing is wrong medically that isn't allowing me to lose. My doctor was impressed by my knowledge (thank you college and SparkPeople!) and we talked about the fact that my body may not process unnatural carbs as well as the next person. She suggested that I try a modified South Beach where I do not cut out fruit, but cut out bread (which she said is basically useless to your body anyway) and any other enriched carbs (it will say "enriched flour" on the ingredients list). Although it sounds too hard to cut out most bread-type foods (no bagels or cereal either), I am noticing a big difference and finding it difficult on some days to make sure I eat enough because I feel like I'm always eating! I am full most of the time and I have noticed that I have more energy thanks to balanced and stable glycemic levels (meaning no sugar rushes followed by that damn sugar coma!).

Sorry it's another long post, but I thought I'd share what I've found out in the last few weeks! I'm glad that you guys all thought that this was an interesting concept, I'm still playing with my numbers to find what is best for me!

Hope all of you are doing well with your weight loss, and even if you are still not seeing changes, know that there are plenty of healthy changes going on inside your body by exercising and eating healthfully, even if you can't see them! Keep up the good work!! :)

I read the article suggested below. Wow a great source of info.
However I also believe that tracking the calories consumed in one day, helps reflect and find reasons why we are not loosing. On the other side there are people that exercise every day and do not loose weight. I am one of those people, so lately I checked my diet and banned sweets/fats/ most of carbs
.... Let's see how it will all work

Thank you so much for this post, I tried the web site and realized that I was under-eating by 500 calories! Now I feel better, and I had more engery at the gym this morning. I am hoping that the scale will reflect my excitment next week!
Thanks again

I do think that the body can (and does) go into starvation mode at times. My most significant time I noticed this was when I was nursing my son. I was trying to lose some weight and every time I'd cut my calories, I'd stop losing... but I'd eat a donut for breakfast and lose a pound! (I wish life was really that easy...)
So, I tried something called Calorie Cycling (there's a team here with the same name) and it made a huge difference. Instead of cutting calories, you change the number you eat each day (so one day may be a 1200 calorie day but the next is a 1500 etc). It averages out the same in a week, but keeps your body from getting used to what you're doing. Just an idea.
I can't say that I'm the model student... since I fell off the wagon for several months... and I'm trying to get back on track...

I've been thinking about this lately, too, but (I confess) I have not kept real careful track of my calorie intake. I'm a perfectionist and it bothers me that I can't figure it out exactly. But I need to at least get an IDEA, right? I know I also eat too many empty calories (sweets, etc) although I am extremely aware of what they are.

Main Goals: Eat better and less of it. Move more.

Secondary Goal: Go from 167 to 147 by 2/19/2011.

I have been in the same boat as most of you for the past 4 months or so - eating within my calorie range and doing 45 min cardio 4-5 times/week plus strength training 2-3 times/week. I was doing everything right but I have been fighting the same 3 lbs for the whole 4 months!

Today I was reading through a bunch of the message boards as usual and for the second time someone brought up the idea of eating more to lose weight. I thought to myself that this sounds crazy but as I read more and went to the website to calculate my Basal Metabolic Rate (the amount of calories your body needs to sustain itself), I realized that maybe there was something to this. One article that I read said to think of your metabolism as a fire; in order to make it burn hotter and faster, you have to add more fuel to the fire. Sounds logical, right?

In calculating my caloric intake needs, I realized that the 1200-1400 calories I have been consuming for the past 4 months (which started out as torture and I've slowly gotten used to) were nowhere near the amount of calories that my body needs to not only keep going in my day-to-day life, but to also keep going during cardio and strength workouts, which each burn more calories instantly and later on, respectively.

So I was just wondering what all of you have read and think about this? Here is the link to the website I did my calculations on:

www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculato
r/
harris-benedict-equation/calorie-intR>ake-to-lose-weight.php

There are plenty of others, but this is the simplest and most straightfoward.

I'm going to try upping my calorie intake gradually these next few weeks and see if it helps, although I'm terrified I'm going to gain instead of lose! Hope you all are doing well and keep up the good work! We'll all get there eventually! :)
