Hi everyone...

I just got myself a new pedometer... I had one which I lost and then had another one which wasn't sensitive enough. Hopefully this one is more accurate. I am now looking forward to getting my 10,000 steps in.

Anyone open for challenges?

I find with my normal day at work, around the house, etc - I do about 4,000-6,000 steps. But if I walk at lunch time, offer to take the mail to the PO, I do about 8,000. I have to make an effort to put in at least another 20-30 minutes to make it 10,000. Last night I made my husband walk to the mall (about 10 minutes, which made it aerobic), we walked the whole mall (upstairs & downstairs), shared a subway low-fat sub and walked back - I did 10,269 of which about 3270 were aerobic.
In the beginning, I thought I'd never hit 10,000. Once I did it, it didn't seem so overwhelming. But I have to make a consious effort to reach the goal. Each week, I try to add 1 more day that I walked 10,000 than the week before.
Best to you - you can do it - take it 1 day at a time!

Hi, my name is Alexis. I just got my pedometer today, and on my first day got alittle over 5000 steps. I got that much by walking at home, and doing a 3 mile WATP dvd. I hope to get to know you all!

Hi, Barb! I agree - putting the pedometer on helps us focus. I never would have thought it, but I have been wearing mine for about two weeks now. I seem to check in almost all day, and I find ways to get more steps.

I am a very slow loser - my doc at my annual checkup said menopause is causing some of the weird stuff with hormones. She said my metabolism is very slow. I sit all day at work, yada-yada-yada. I need to get up and move for lots of reasons. At work, I would routinely walk 750 to 1000 steps a day (just found this out with the new pedometer). On weekends, I was getting much more - sometimes from 6000 to 7500 steps a day. So, I do have a goal to get to 10000 steps a day. I am not sure how to do this exactly without getting up an hour earlier and walking on the treadmill, but I will find it. Sooner or later, we will all lose - slow losers or not. So, don't give up. Get that pedometer clipped on and get going!

Hope to visit with you lots more as we are all walking through this together, Janice

Hey all you steppers!
I was excited to see theres a group for people who walk a lot, ita about all I do! Well, I go to work and I make dinner and stuff, but as far as exercise is concerned, I'm definietly a walker.
My work place started a health benefits program about 2 years ago, and they set up virutal trips and you have to log your steps to get places. I got a pedometer out of a box of Special K and I was set. Sort of. I sipped the first "trip" because I thought it wasn't cool. But then they started up with the second round, and I joined 2 months late (its an 8 month program) and then secretly counted my steps for 6 weeks to see if it was feasible to reach the top of Mount McKinley (our destination) before I actually signed up for the program, and it turns out I made it in 4 months!
In my location (there are 4 campuses all together), I stayed in the top 10 for nearly the whole journey, and I finished with time to spare! I was toally hooked! I can walk, and I do walk, and I am diligent in recording my steps, but we are currently between challenges and Im slacking because I have no accountability to log steps. I am down from 12,000-14,000 a day to about 8,000, and thats not very helpful. We start a new program in 2 weeks, but in the meantime I need to find a better pedometer (I lost my little green one last week and hate the replacement I got) and start working my way up to 12000+ steps again. My goal for the program is to stay in the top 5 on our campus and make it through the challenge at least twice before time runs out. I suspect holding myself accountable to 2 entities will make me try even harder and Im excited to (virtually) meet a whole giant group of people who also walk!

Hi, I'm pretty new to the group. I started doing 10,000 steps a day last spring, but lost my pedometer mowing the lawn in the summer. It didn't work after I found it doing fall-cleanup, and, frankly the dollar-store variety really vary a lot and don't seem to last a month. Weight loss goes much better with it, so I got another to combat this plateau I'm on. 14,327 steps yesterday!

Hello everyone. Just bought my pedometer yesterday. I have only used it while I was on my treadmill and logged around 7000 steps both yesterday and today. My goal is min. 10000. I am going to start wearing it all day on 3/17. I am happy to have joined this group. This is one more goal I can add to my list.

Hello. I just got my ped about a week or so ago. I was shocked to see that on my work days (I sit all day at work), I get about 700 to 1000 steps a day. On weekends, I have been getting anywhere from 5000 to 7500. My goal is to hit 10,000 and to then get consistent.

I am 50. I have three sons - two are still at home. I am married. I live in Seguin, Texas (right outside San Antonio). Nice to meet everyone! Janice

Hi, I just joined. I hate to exercise, but I am willing to count my steps. I am hoping this will encourage me to start walking more. I wear my pedometer on the cuff of my left sock because my belly is so big that it arrives at the counter before the rest of me and always popped my pedometer off onto the floor. I haven't had any problems with it on my sock. I am not consistent yet; I have only had it back on for about a week. Shopping days are best for me--I went over 9000 steps that day. I am sure glad I found this site. Take care. Janet

Hugs from J and thank you for your support.

Hi! I have just joined. I recently started a walking challenge with my church. We were given a pedometer & instrustions on how to find an average or baseline, then challenged to build on that. My baseline was about 7000. I hope joining this team will help me to meet those goals as well.

I just joined a couple days ago. I've had a pedometer for well over a year, but I never wanted to wear it in public because it makes a little ticking noise, and was visible on my clothes. I'm going to try to start wearing it again, but as a teacher I really don't want to have to explain why my hip is clicking every time I take a step! We'll see how it goes I guess! Here's to 10,000 steps a day!

2/22 - 205
3/12 - 195.4 5% goal met and passed!
4/9 - 188.2 10% goal met!

I just joined this group (been on SP consistently for about a month). But I'm going to use my pedometer starting this weekend (my bf has one and said he'll give it to me) and I'm really anxious to see how many steps I walk a day!

Does anyone know anything about how many steps it takes to walk a mile? Roughly?

I have been on SP for about 15 days, and I have had a pedometer for over 2 months. I am not very consistent, so I figured i would join this group. Maybe I will actually make it 10,000 steps a day.

Hello,
I just joined the team and I've been with SP for just over a week. For the longest time, I've wanted to buy a pedometer and I finally bought one last week. I'm a stay at home mom of 4 kids (4 yr daughter, 2 1/2 twin boys, and 1 year boy) and one on the way. I can't do too much exercise, but I have to start somewhere. My goal is to get to 10,000 + steps, but right now I'm at about 6,000. Thanks and talk to you later.

Hi - I just found this message board - and thought it would fit right in with what my sister and I are doing - I've been wearing my ped since about November and averaging right around 10000 steps - mostly because I walk while I work - I work in the Nursery/ Day care program at our local school - so I walk the hall in front of the bathrooms when I take kids for a potty break - then I walk around the gym when I take the non-napping group away from the room where the others are napping....it's been working out well for me. (How do you like that for a run-on and on sentence?) But I have to say my best numbers so far came from spending the day with my oldest son. We only get to see each other about every other week but when we see each other, we just walk and talk and together we went 18923 steps on Saturday!

Hi I have just joined this group and was wondering if there is a way to track this on your fitness activity. If so how ? I always walk on my job and I know by the end of the day if I tracked my steps and calories it would help with my fitness activity. It is surprising how it all adds up. Thank you for your help. Hi, I am new to the group. I have just started using a pedometer and love it. At first I thought I would have walked thousands of steps in a day, but the first day proved I wasn't doing that, so now each day I try and do better. I hope one day soon to achieve 10,000 steps and more, I'm sure this site will inspire me to do it.

Hey all--I'm new to your wonderful group! I've been wearing a pedometer since November and was pleasantly surprised at how many steps I have just by switching where I park for work and shopping. I've been logging my daily totals on paper but this will be even better!

Hello Everyone,
I am a pedometer addict! I even choose my clothing so my pedometer will fit on them properly! I usually can get close to my 10,000 with my cardio and the rest is money in the bank!

Hi Sandra and welcome
I use an Omron pedometer, it works great and it even counts steps while in my pocket - it also counts aerobic steps which is a really nice feature
As far as goals - I think it's up to you , but I would suggest setting something attainable and work on consistency first - you'll find it gets quite addictive and you'll be bumping up your goals in no time at all!
Good Luck & have fun

shocked by my 3000 steps yesterday...I got home late from work...a healthy dinner and took my walk at 9 p.m....freezing and dark but got up to 8000 steps! I'm still so surprized that my day is so sedate. I am going to have to really discipline myself...this is so hard!

Hi - I just took my new pedometer out of its indestructable plastic package (only took an hour) and programmed it. I used to do a lot of walking but the neighborhood I currently live in is not as interesting ... anyway I slipped out of the habit of walking and the pounds just kept on growing. But I've lost a few since I joined Sparkpeople in November. It's nice meeting everyone on the team .. let's see what this new toy can do for me.

My body is the most precious instrument I will ever own.

I finally got a new pedometer and wore it today for the first time...at work and then later at home. I am so discouraged! I can't believe that I only took a little over 3000 steps today...and today was a normal day...so now I can understand why my lower calorie intake is not enough to loose weight! (I actually walked in place when I got home from work to get to 3000...how will I ever get to 10,000 steps?!?) The week-ends should be easier but weekdays with work will be very tough! Any suggestions? I have a very demanding job (in a suit all day and no break...working long hours, etc.......) I'm hoping that with the days getting longer (it's dark at 4 p.m. and rainy today) I might be able to get out in the evenings but I don't want to wait til late spring for this option.

Hi, I'm relatively new to this site. I've been using the pedometer for 2 days but it's tough finding the time between kids & work. My goal is to work up to 12,000 steps per day (maybe I can learn to walk in my sleep) but I am only at about 8,000 per day right now.

Has anyone included an airdyne in their steps walked, and if you have how? My ped doesn't pick up the number of pedal cycles.

I am joining this team for motivation. I found my pedometer and am now wearing it. It's difficult to get to high numbers with 6 inches of snow on the ground and Curves isn't open on weekends.

In the past I've worked for 5000 steps, but not 10,000! It will be a challenge!

It's been so motivating reading all your posts. I had a pedometer several years(and pounds) ago but it's nowhere to be found. I'm going out tomorrow to buy one and join the walking challenge of 10,000 steps a day. I really am limited to walking as a form of exercise but do enjoy it. My challenge is to get out there. I think that maybe by having the pedometer on me all day at work, etc. I might just push myself a bit further. Also reading the posts from 'walking in place' I can see that there are options for getting my 10,000 steps in each day rather than excuses. Keep me accountable and thanks in advance!

After reading many of the introduction posts, I was motivated to dig out my old pedometer. Yea - it still works after a few years in a drawer. Looking forward to see what a typical day has been like and how I will probably need to change to get in 10,000 steps a day.

Hello all! I just got a very cool pedometer and I wanted to join this group to keep me using it. I've been around, but haven't used the message boards/spartteams much, but I am trying.

I got my new pedometer yesterday and gave the old one to my son (13yrs). He's going to challenge me by using it at school, and whatever he logs in as steps, I have to match plus 1000. Don't know how it will go, but I think it'll be fun if I give him computer time as an incentive for him to help me keep it up.

Hey all! I'm relatively new to sparks, just here since the 16th of December. I've been using a pedometer for the last couple of weeks and love it! It is a real inspiration to get in my walking every day. I use my treadmill most days and get a great deal of my steps that way. I also live on a farm, so lots of walking around when I'm feeding and cleaning. I'm a granny to 5 kids of varying ages from 6months to 12years. They keep me active as well, but I need to get stronger and more fit to keep up. I've been reaching my 10,000 for the last week. Did I say I love my ped?? LOL.

A few years ago I began using using a New-lifestyles pedometer (10,000 steps per day) while tracking my caloric intake. This worked wonferfully and lost 15 pounds by making sure my caloric intake was less than my calories expended. I FELT WONDERFUL!!!Unfortunately my diet partner stopped, and I did not continue with the program and the weight returned. I'm hoping this community as well as a new "buddy" will help me stay on track.

I'm Sandy! 30yo married mother of 1 in AZ. I've just started getting active again. I had broken my ankle in 3 places about 4 years ago, and stopped being active at that time (even after it healed.)

I have to get in the habit of wearing my pedometer, this will be a great reminder :)

Hi, I'm Bonnie, and am looking forward to working my way to the 10000 steps per day again. I have fms and this is one method of fitness I can actually do except on very bad days. I used to be on a yahoogroup years ago for steps and it was a real help. I'm looking forward to stepping with you all.

Just started my walking program today and logged over 8,000 steps. Looking forward to reaching 10,000 before the end of the month. emoticon

I wanted to stop in and say hi! I'm a 22-year-old university student who just joined the group. I'm not a huge fan of exercise but this seems like an easy way to get in some activity. Hopefully it'll be a good way to get my feet wet and help me on the road to some healthier habits!

I've worn a pedometer off and on and just found this group. I'm going to start wearing it regularly now and joining you.

Good Morning Everyone. I am joining this team even though I do not yet have a pedometer. I just ordered one online. I am hoping that something new will motivate me through the holiday season and I thought joining a pedometer team might help! I hope to have the pedometer and be geared up to really get going by the end of the month.

My name is Michele and I just joined SparkPeople today. I love the way that everything is set up. I have two children 13 and 8. I would like to loose around 55 lbs by this summer. I have a pedometer but sometimes I think that it is not working right. I used it for about two weeks straight and then I stopped because the girl I was working with stopped so I had noone to compete with and a little competition is good.

Hi everyone. I have been on sp for awhile now without much success, mostly because of my own lack of effort. This time I am going to make it though! Now I just need to find my pedometer!

Hello Everyone,

I joined Sparks 11/6/07 and I would love to join the 10,000 steps a day team. I will have to pick up a pedometer Saturday night and I hope to break it in on Sunday. I try to walk around our Blimp Base which is 5 miles long 2-3 times a week.

I look forward to walking off the weight with you guys.

Hi everyone, just joined today and getting back to walking after a knee injury. I'm nowhere near 10,000 steps...lucky I see 8,000 but that's why I'm here...I love challenging myself and hope to reach 10,000 before the end of the year.
